Don attended San Jose State University. It was during that time that he performed as a singer in a variety show called "Debut" on television station KTVU in Oakland, CA. He left college to serve in the Army and was stationed in Korea, where he worked in Special Services auditioning and booking shows for the USO.

In 1963, Don moved from Northern California to Hollywood with the hope of "being discovered" as a singer, songwriter, actor. To make ends meet he took a job in distributor sales at Dot Records. Through that association, Don met Jesse Hodges, who offered him a position at a new recording studio: Hollywood Sound. There he learned to engineer and produce records while working with many artists including Dorsey Burnette, Ray Peterson, Harry Nilsson and Danny Hutton (later to become a founding member of Three Dog Night).

Don then formed a production company and founded Momentum Records. He developed and produced new recording artists in addition to advertising jingles for major corporations including, Toyota, Marineland of the Pacific and Bob's Big Boy restaurants.

In 1973, Don began to promote concerts and successfully showcased some of the nations best talent, including: Stevie Wonder, Earth, Wind and Fire, The Jackson 5, The Temptations, The O'Jays, Rick Nelson, Linda Ronstadt, Cheech and Chong, Gladys Knight, Waylon Jennings, Charlie Rich and more.

Around 1975, a friend approached Don about producing the music for a film he was making. Utilizing the techniques he had developed as a record producer, Don's initial effort was so successful that other projects quickly followed. He had been credited as a Music Supervisor as early as 1969 but his concept of complete supervision: producing a complete music package, including, setting and guaranteeing budgets, negotiating and hiring composer, musicians, studio, clearing all music and supervising from initial spotting for music, all recording sessions and finally the dubbing of music to film was an entirely new concept. Don Perry Music became a complete "in house" music department for independent film makers.

Don has packaged and produced music for nearly 100 motion pictures and in excess of 200 hours of film and series for television. He is credited with the production of the music for the TV series, "The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams". The theme song,"Maybe" sold in excess of two million, six hundred thousand copies in Europe. It remained on the charts for 8 months in Germany and was named "Record of the Year" there in 1980.

Don's other production credits include the soundtrack for the motion picture "Girls Just Want To Have Fun" which included chart record "Shout". He also produced the album "Instant Hero" by Cajun artist Doug Kershaw which included the country chart single "Hello Woman". Don also produced approximately twenty albums for renowned children's artist Hap Palmer which won numerous awards from Parent's Choice and The American Library Association.
