Five former Federal Communications Commission (FCC) officials have urged FCC Chairman Brendan Carr to drop the agency’s probe into Paramount Global and CBS News that is connected to a “60 Minutes” interview that aired last year.
This week, the five ex-officials — three Democrats and two Republicans — said the investigation against CBS-owned television station Wcbs (Channel 2) in New York was initially closed by former FCC Chairperson Jessica Rosenworcel, only to be reopened by the new FCC Chair Brendan Carr at the best of the White House and President Donald Trump.
The investigation centers around allegations that CBS News and 60 Minutes edited its interview with then-Vice President Kamala Harris last year in order to present her response to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in a more-positive light.

In the blizzard of executive orders, Resolute desk pronouncements and mass firings of President Donald Trump’s first weeks in office, it’s easy to lose sight of what has been happening at the FCC and its chilling effect on the media.
The agency typically gets few headlines, engaged as it is in policy calls over arcane topics like spectrum allocation. But as the chief regulator with oversight over broadcasting, the FCC wields authority over media companies large and small, and that is where its Trump-appointed chairman Brendan Carr has sought to rattle the industry in his initial month.
Just this past week, Carr announced an investigation into the diversity, equity and inclusion policies of Comcast and NBCUniversal, and vowed that other media companies would face the same scrutiny. He targeted PBS and NPR for their underwriting practices, while warning that their government funding would be in the crosshairs of congressional Republicans.

The medieval fantasy Netflix series Cursed was canceled after one season, eliminating the possibility of a Cursed season 2. Cursed premiered in July 2020 with a 10-episode first season, but a year passed without any updates, leaving the series' fate unknown. Then, in the aftermath of other cancelations that included four original comedy shows, Cursed also got the ax from Netflix, with its title becoming an ironic self-fulfilling prophecy. In season 1, Nimue (Katherine Langford) is shunned by her Fey village as she's believed to be cursed, but in actuality, Nimue's destined to become the magical Lady of the Lake.
Along the way, Nimue joins forces with a young King Arthur (Devon Terrell) on a quest to find Merlin (Gustaf Skarsgrd) and deliver Excalibur. Given the widespread appeal of fantasy content in today's streaming world and Netflix's own prowess in the genre with shows like The Witcher, it comes as a bit of...

C-span has tapped a long-time CNN journalist to serve as its next chief executive officer, the network confirmed this week.
Sam Feist recently held the role of bureau chief at CNN’s Washington office. He previously served as CNN’s political director and the vice president of the network’s programming. Feist joined CNN in 1991, the same year the network went mainstream for its coverage of an American bombing campaign at the start of the first Gulf War.
Feist starts at C-span in June, where he will assume the CEO role from departing co-chief executives Rob Kennedy and Susan Swain. Both held the co-ceo position for more than a decade.
“Our democracy needs C-span now more than ever,” Feist said in a statement. “I look forward to working with C-span’s extraordinary and dedicated team to expand the network’s reach and meet new audiences wherever they are.

Forty years ago, you might be hard-pressed to find anyone in the country who regularly watched the political affairs network called C-span, let alone anyone who actually knew what it was.
Today, the brand is as synonymous as Xerox (copy machines) or Scotch tape (adhesive tape) — it’s a stand-in for any kind of live television coverage related to the hearings, votes and political affairs of Congress and other government agencies, to include the White House.
If it’s political in nature, it’s probably on C-span. But not everything aired on C-Span originates with the networks.
Take, for instance, hearings from the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives. Colloquially, political aficionados and even journalists refer to the coverage as originating from “C-span cameras,” even though they don’t.

Updated with vote: The Senate voted today to confirm a third Democratic commissioner, telecommunications attorney Anna Gomez, to the Federal Communications Commission. The 54-43 vote gives the Dems a working majority on the FCC, which has been stuck in a 2-2- partisan deadlock.
Previously: The Senate on Thursday moved toward confirming a third Democratic commissioner to the FCC, giving the party a working majority on the commission almost three years into President Joe Biden’s presidential term.
Anna Gomez, a telecommunications attorney, was nominated by Biden last May. The Senate voted 55-43 to cut off debate and proceed to a final vote on her nomination, which will take place later on Thursday.
The FCC has been deadlocked 2-2, something that has prevented the agency from taking up more contentious issues like net neutrality rules, which were rolled back during the Republican majority of President Donald Trump’s administration.

Updated, with information on delayed vote: The Directors Guild of America is urging the Senate Commerce Committee to reject Joe Biden’s nominee to the FCC, citing Gigi Sohn’s past stances on copyright.
The committee was scheduled to take up Sohn’s nomination on Wednesday, but it will be postponed because of the absence of Sen. Ben Ray Luján (D-nm), whose office announced that he suffered a stroke. He is expected to make a full recovery.
The guild sent a letter on Tuesday to its chairwoman, Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-wa) objecting to the choice. In the letter obtained by Deadline (read it here), the DGA’s national executive director Russell Hollander wrote that Sohn’s “long standing record and hostility towards copyright law is inconsistent with the role of the FCC.” He argued that the agency’s role in licensing and regulation of TV, satellite and cable “implicate intellectual property.

Joe Biden’s nominee to fill a vacancy on the FCC, Gigi Sohn, faced a string of questions — from past tweets about Fox News to her role in the streaming service Locast — as she faced a Senate confirmation hearing on Wednesday.
While most nominees to the FCC get through with relatively little turbulence, Sohn’s longtime work as a public interest advocate often put her at odds with the broadcast and telecom industry, particularly on issues like media consolidation and net neutrality.
But some on the right, including Tucker Carlson, also have seized on some of her past tweets to claim that she would use her position to try to stifle conservative voices.
In the Senate Commerce Committee hearing, Sohn responded to queries over some of her past tweets, including one from last year in which she wrote, “For all my concerns about #Facebook, I believe that Fox News has...

As some Republicans are lining up against one of President Joe Biden’s FCC nominees, Gigi Sohn, she has gained an unexpected ally: the president of One America News Network.
Charles Herring issued a statement on Wednesday endorsing Sohn’s confirmation, writing that “as an executive of an independent, family owned business of two national networks, One America News Network and Awe, I’ve found myself advocating for more open markets in an environment that is arguably a quasi monopoly. I’ve fought in the trenches side-by-side with Gigi Sohn for a number of years on multiple issues. I’m fully aware of Gigi’s personal views, yet I’m even more knowledgeable on her strong belief and advocacy for diversity in the programming lineup, especially in news, regardless of conflicts with her personal views.”

President Biden on Tuesday officially designated Jessica Rosenworcel, who has been acting FCC chair since January, to be the permanent head of the telecommunications agency.
Rosenworcel, if she’s confirmed, would be the first woman to serve as FCC chair. In addition, Biden nominated Gigi Sohn, a longtime public advocate for open and affordable telecom services and former FCC staffer, to fill the vacant commissioner post at the agency. If she is confirmed, Sohn would be the first openly Lgbtiq+ commissioner in the FCC’s history.
The appointments would give Democrats a 3-2 advantage among FCC commissioners. Both Rosenworcel and Sohn are net neutrality supporters, indicating the agency will move forward to restore the FCC’s Open Internet order that was revoked under the Trump administration.

President Joe Biden plans to name Jessica Rosenworcel as permanent chair of the FCC, while he will nominate Gigi Sohn to fill a vacancy on the commission.
Lobbyists and lawmakers have been buzzing for months over the delay in Biden’s decision over the commission, which has been deadlocked 2-2 between Republicans and Democrats since he came into office.
Rosenworcel, who has been acting chair, will be the first woman to become permanent chair of the 87-year-old commission. Biden also nominated her for an additional term.
Sohn, a longtime public interest advocate who served as counselor to FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler, who served during Barack Obama’s second term, had been viewed as one of the contenders for a slot on the commission. Netflix has opted to cancel Cursed after just one season. The fantasy series, which was headlined by Katherine Langford was released last summer and promised a new take on the age-old Arthurian legend. But the new take didn't generate enough buzz to garner a large enough audience that would justify a continuation. As a result, the streaming service has quietly axed the show.
According to multiple reports, Cursed season 2 is not in the cards. While Netflix has been known to save certain shows from cancelation, their shows don't move elsewhere. So this is firmly a one-and-done situation. The cast has been released from any contractual obligations and are now free to pursue other opportunities. No specific reason for the cancellation was provided. Though it likely came down to the audience it brought in relative to what it cost to produce.

The Federal Communications Commission will soon shift to Democratic control, and speculation has already begun about who will assume the chairmanship under the Biden administration.
Jessica Rosenworcel, the senior Democrat on the commission, is widely considered to be one of the leading candidates to succeed Ajit Pai in the powerful regulatory post. She has been vetted twice and would likely have a smooth path to confirmation, which would be a key consideration assuming the Senate remains in Republican hands.
“I think Jessica Rosenworcel probably has the best chance of becoming chair,” said John Orlando, former head of global government affairs at CBS. “The ease of her getting confirmed is far easier than anybody else.”

With the White House set to shift parties in January, powerful regulatory agencies the Federal Trade Commission and the Federal Communications Commission face sweeping issues with big implications for tech and entertainment, from antitrust and privacy to net neutrality, legal immunity for Internet platforms and media-cross ownership.
“They are piling up. Many issues that we were working on a decade ago are still around — the digital divide, net neutrality, copyright — and now we have others, like looking at big tech antitrust and Section 230. We need to see policymakers step up and take action,” said Christopher Lewis, president and CEO of policy nonprofit Public Knowledge, which promotes free expression and an open Internet.
Curating Internet content, or not, is by far the noisiest issue and the most political. The right and left both have concerns about how social media platforms operate, but diametrically opposed goals: the left wants more aggressive policing,...

The characters that populate Netflix's Cursed are among the most iconic literary creations of all time. You just might not know it until the finale. Created by Frank Miller and Tom Wheeler, the new Netflix series pulls from Arthurian Legend and reinvents the familiar through the perspective of Nimue, aka the Lady in the Lake, and her ascension from village outsider to Wolf Blood Witch to Queen of the Fey. That journey brings her into direct conflict with the Red Paladins, a fanatical sect of the Church razing the fey population to the ground, with great thanks to their …...

Frank Miller, creative comic book legend and co-creator of recent Netflix series Cursed, is certainly no stranger to controversy. Thus, he now finds himself hit by a lawsuit from a former co-producer, who’s seeking damages estimated as high as $25 million.
Stephen L’Heureux, a producer from 2014 sequel film Sin City: A Dame to Kill For—which Miller co-wrote and co-directed with Robert Rodriguez—is claiming economic interference and defamation in a suit against Miller and co-defendant Silenn Thomas, an associate producer on that picture, who was named CEO of Frank Miller Inc. this past August. However, this particular set of grievances centers on the alleged obstruction of would-be adaptation projects of Miller’s Dark Horse Comics-published titles, specifically 1990-1992 future-dystopian cyber-noir crime comic, Hard Boiled (pictured in the title image), and a Sin City television series, both of which L’Heureux claims to have paid total ownership for the developmental rights.

A dispute over rights to a Sin City TV series and a Hard Boiled film have turned hardcore between Cursed co-creator Frank Miller and producer Stephen L’Heureux.
Hardcore to the tune of more than $25 million, as a defamation and economic-interference lawsuit from the Frank Miller’s Sin City: A Dame to Kill For producer is seeking. The Netflix fantasy series Cursed is a new take on the Legend of King Arthur. Based on a graphic novel written by Thomas Wheeler and illustrated by Frank Miller, the series stars Katherine Langford (13 Reasons Why) in the lead as Nimue, a teenager with special powers who will one day become the fabled Lady of the Lake. In a recent interview with the press, Langford spoke about her love for the character of Nimue.
"[Nimue has] a really incredible and kind of epic journey. On the one hand, she's going through this journey of grief, personal loss, and also personal growth, and [on the other], kind of the greater challenge of overcoming adversity. And one of the greatest things I think I realized during playing Nimue in this series, and in the [Arthurian] stories, is that she kind of represents courage. And I think she's a really colorful beacon and also a really interesting heroine in this world.

King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table are nowhere to be found in Netflix's Cursed, at least not in their classic incarnations.

(Warning: This post contains spoilers for the first season of Netflix’s “Cursed.”)
For “Cursed” fans who want to dig deeper into the medieval origins of the fantasy series, Netflix shared a video primer on Saturday featuring the cast breaking down the lengthy history of the characters they play on the show.
The series, based on Frank Miller and Tom Wheeler’s novel of the same name, provides an origin story for Nimue, a.k.a. the Lady of the Lake, (played by “13 Reasons Why” star Katherine Langford) and King Arthur (Devon Terrell). Throughout the series, she encounters a number of other familiar names like, Merlin, Morgana, Gawain and Lancelot, though not all of their stories on the show line up with the mythology.
“The Arthur saga is more complex than your old books could make it seem,” Terrell explains in the video above. “It’s part history, it’s part myth,...

The following contains spoilers for Netflix’s Cursed. Read our spoiler-free review of the series here.
While Netflix’s Cursed focuses primarily on the story of Nimue, a young girl with a magical gift and a dark destiny as the future Lady of the Lake, it asks its audience to engage with the traditional tropes of Arthurian legend in new and interesting ways.
Cursed’s Merlin may also feel a bit strange to viewers who are only familiar with the character as the legendary wizard from film adaptations like Disney’s The Sword in the Stone, or the famous T.H. White novel it’s based on, The Once and Future King. In these – and most other – retellings, Merlin is a figure of great power and wisdom. His magical abilities are substantial and he’s generally depicted as a sort of all-seeing sage, who engineers the birth of Arthur and the...

Ever since the turn of the millennium, movies and TV shows based on either comic books or graphic novels have proven to be hugely popular, and in recent months Netflix have finally caught on and doubled down on the genre, with several of their highest-profile recent originals being page-to-screen adaptations.
Extraction became the streaming giant’s biggest original movie ever after the Russo brothers adapted their own Ciudad, while The Old Guard continues to dominate and is set to join Chris Hemworth’s actioner on the list of most-watched in-house projects, along with the live-action take on Frank Miller and Tom Wheeler’s illustrated novel Cursed that has been generating some very healthy buzz since it was released yesterday.

Netflix has plumbed the depths of teen TV. They have shows about autistic high schoolers and British sexuality and a girl who can explode football players with her brain. But they don’t often venture into full-tilt, high-budget fantasy yet. Their female protagonists rarely wield swords. Enter “Cursed,” the streaming service’s first dalliance with Arthurian legend.

If you’re a Netflix subscriber, you’re probably not hurting for fantastic new content to binge. This month alone has been absolutely killer, with the service dropping the Charlize Theron action flick The Old Guard alongside a host of classic films like Total Recall, Million Dollar Baby and the original The Karate Kid trilogy. As if that’s not enough, the end of July will see the long-awaited second season of the quirky superhero family series The Umbrella Academy, which by itself would make for a worthy month to be a Netflix user.
Of course, there was a short drought of new movies and shows this past weekend, but the last few days have seen the platform back in action with some pretty good stuff. Luckily, that trend doesn’t seem to be stopping, as today marks another Netflix content drop, and there’s at least one major new...

In “Cursed,” a new Netflix series that restages the Arthurian legend with a contemporary sensibility, Katherine Langford plays Nimue, a young woman whose sense of righteousness is inflected by, and inflamed with, a destiny to lead her people through a time of upheaval. At one point, a rival of sorts refers to her by the title “the Wolf Blood Witch, dreaded wielder of the Devil’s Tooth”; heard a certain way, it’s reminiscent of the many titles held by Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) on “Game of Thrones.”
“Cursed” has less on its mind than its predecessor in the sword-and-sorcery space, and its visual effects are notably less convincing. Yet it slots neatly into the new tradition of genre television that subverts classic myth and aspires to cross over — in this case, presenting Langford, the star of “13 Reasons Why,” as a draw for nascent fantasy fans. When I met the cast and creators of Cursed last summer, it was clear everyone was proud of the show they were producing. It made sense. As I walked through realistic stone castles, explored a lush, overgrown forest, and poked my head into Merlin's sleeping quarters, it was impossible not to get excited. There we were, in a huge warehouse in Slough - a town an hour west of London - with mythical creatures lounging on plastic chairs as they waited to be called to set, and cast members (like Devon Terrell and Billy Jenkins) casually joking with media between takes, all while smattered with blood, sweat, and dirt. Just an average day on the set of Netflix's latest fantasy series.
I expected to see the incredible costumes, hear about epic fight scenes, and get a glimpse into the world of the talented people who create the special-effect makeup.

Netflix’s Cursed will (rightly) generate a lot of buzz for the way it injects a much-needed female perspective into the traditionally male world of Arthurian legend. The series gives a voice to a largely unexplored female character by focusing on the story of Fey girl Nimue, who is destined to one day become the Lady of the Lake. But in doing so, it also reimagines our understanding of Arthur himself, putting a fresh, new spin on a centuries-old figure.
The Arthur we first meet in Cursed isn’t exactly what you’d call once and future king material. A young mercenary for hire, initially he seems to be little more than a hustler looking out for his own ends. That this is a significant departure from the stories we generally know, to put it mildly.
Traditionally, Arthur is generally presented as the noblest of terms, either as a legendary...

Netflix’s new fantasy drama Cursed is an Arthurian retelling that asks an intriguing – and long overdue – question: What if the central figure of the story is a woman, instead of a man?
For while there are several familiar female figures in the various legends of King Arthur, they’re not generally presented as the drivers of the action. Instead, they tend to live largely at the margins of stories about men, popping up just in time to fall in love, get kidnapped, or give birth to a son with a destiny that far outstrips their own.
Cursed attempts to bring a feminist perspective to this traditionally very male story, by placing a woman at its center who rarely gets her due: The Lady of the Lake. Often known as Nimue – or Niniane, or Viviane, or nothing at all, depending on who you read – she’s a powerful enchantress who...

Most of us know the legend of King Arthur – at least, in broad strokes. A legendary British leader who rules over the kingdom of Camelot, Arthur builds a legacy of justice and equality with the help of a sword called Excalibur and a wizard named Merlin.
In actuality, there are dozens of versions of the Arthur myth, many of which both contradict and complement one another in various ways. In some, Arthur is a warrior who defeats the Saxons, in others, he battles supernatural enemies and is betrayed by his own nephew. In several, he’s the epitome of a Christian king, who encourages his knights to seek the very chalice that Jesus himself used, even as he himself is deceived by those closest to him. In still more, he takes a back seat to familiar medieval romance figures like Lancelot, Percival, Galahad, and Yvain.
