Saturday Night has quickly become one of the most anticipated movies of the fall season, but has been getting some blowback on how it handles the depiction of Muppets creator Jim Henson. Directed by Jason Reitman, the film chronicles the ninety minutes before the first episode of Saturday Night Live aired. Following a report by Slate regarding Saturday Night's depiction of Jim Henson and The Muppets, various Muppets fans took to social media to express their displeasure with the early reviews for the film.
In Saturday Night, Jim Henson is played by Succession star Nicolas Braun (who also plays Andy Kaufman in the film), is depicted as being a straight-laced member of the Saturday Night Live crew who in the film is treated as a joke, often the source of ridicule, with Henson's collaborator and fellow Muppet innovator Frank Oz being present but never being given a line of dialogue.

After Orphan: First Kill landed William Brent Bell the best reviews of his career, the genre filmmaker has kept the momentum going with another well received film in Lord of Misrule.
Bell has explored a variety of different horror subgenres throughout his career, and he can now cross folk horror off the list. Lord of Misrule chronicles a vicar named Rebecca Holland (Tuppence Middleton), whose daughter (Evie Templeton) goes missing during her quaint English village’s harvest festival. Rebecca then stops at nothing to find her missing child, and all roads lead her to Ralph Ineson’s Jocelyn Abney, who has a keen insight into the town’s disturbing folklore.
Oddly enough, Ineson’s role was written to be a middle-aged woman, but Bell floated the idea of Ineson reinterpreting the character through performance, as opposed to rewriting.

“Familiar” is one of those descriptors critics can twist into a positive or negative connotation. William Brent Bell’s folkloric Lord of Misrule basks in culty Pagan familiarity but not as cheap mimicry. If you’ve seen The Wicker Man, The Ritual, Kill List — I’ll spare you thirty more titles — you won’t be stricken dumbstruck by writer Tom de Ville’s ode to harvest rituals and wretched traditions. Bell’s not rewriting the book on insidious celebrations beneath all the synchronized dances and laughter, and yet, Lord of Misrule is an undeniably atmospheric venture into villages of the damned.
Tuppence Middleton leads an excellent ensemble as vicar Rebecca Holland, who — along with her family — are newer residents to the hidden settlement of Berrow. Together with her author husband Henry (Matt Stokoe) and 9-year-old daughter Grace (Evie Templeton), they prepare for a yearly autumn festival where Grace will play the role of “Harvest Angel.

Director William Brent Bell (Orphan: First Kill) is back this week with brand new horror movie Lord of Misrule, a folk horror movie starring Tuppence Middleton and Ralph Ineson (The Witch, Green Knight). Magnet Releasing will release Lord of Misrule in theaters and on VOD on December 8, 2023.
Tom de Ville’s (The Quiet Ones) script has been said to echo The Wicker Man and Midsommar. Like The Wicker Man, Lord of Misrule also features original folk horror music, particularly a theme song featured over the end credits. It turns out that the folk song was co-written by Bell himself.
The filmmaker shared the story behind the folk horror tune in a recent chat with Bloody Disgusting (part one here) and also touched upon the mysterious new entity prowling the quaint town at the center of the folk horror nightmare.

Filmmaker William Brent Bell‘s latest, Lord of Misrule, bears all the familiar earmarks of folk horror. A peculiar town with Pagan roots, bonfires, masked denizens reveling in harvest rituals, and a pious Christian at the center, scrambling to make sense of it all. It’s that well-trodden but visually lush path that serves as refreshing misdirection in a new folk horror entry that attempts to keep its audience on their toes to varying degrees of success.
Tuppence Middleton stars as Rebecca Holland, a Christian preacher who’s recently moved to the quaint town of Burrow with husband Henry (Matt Stokoe) and daughter Grace (Evie Templeton). Burrow accepted her with mostly open arms, attending her sermons weekly and demonstrating patience for Rebecca’s wariness over their Fall harvest festival that’s named Grace as the “Harvest Angel.” Just as soon as Grace is revealed to be a bit of a sociopathic animal abuser,...

Hannibal, Season 3, Episode 5, “Contorno”
Written by Tom de Ville and Bryan Fuller & Steve Lightfoot
Directed by Guillermo Navarro
Airs Thursdays at 10pm (Et) on NBC
In my review of “Aperitivo”, I called for Hannibal to find a sweet spot between the slow-moving introspection of “Secondo” and plot-heavy momentum of “Aperitivo”. “Contorno” does just that, though not in the way expected. The first half of the episode crawls (particularly the scenes with Will and Chiyoh), dragging its feet to prevent the characters from intersecting, before the second half throws this concern out the window and sprints forward, bringing first Pazzi and Hannibal, then Hannibal and Alana, and finally Jack and Hannibal together in memorable and electrifying exchanges. One can almost see showrunner Bryan Fuller reach his limit with angsty, mini-Hannibal Will and decide to chuck him off the train rather than write one more doom-laden conversation between him and Chiyoh.

The Quiet Ones (2014)
Directed by John Pogue
Written by Craig Rosenberg, John Pogue, Oren Moverman and Tom de Ville
Starring: Jared Harris (Professor Joseph Coupland), Sam Claflin (Brian McNeil), Olivia Cooke (Jane Harper), Rory-Fleck Byrne (Harry Abrams) and Erin Richards (Kristina Dalton)
Speaking strictly for myself, I find there are a dearth of quality films that deal predominantly with the supernatural. The last really good offerings of this sub genre in recent years were “Lake Mungo”, “Resolution” and “The Conjuring”. All three were met with general praise although “Lake Mungo” and “Resolution” did not get nearly as much exposure as “The Conjuring” was blessed with. “The Quiet Ones”, released under the newly-resurrected Hammer Horror studios started principal filming back in 2012 and was released two years later. Although the name ‘Hammer Studios’ is not enough to raise hackles of excitement in this day and age,...

.The Quiet Ones,. bearing the mark of Hammer Films, is a scary flick that features the age-old debate between science and the supernatural. Jared Harris stars as Professor Coupland, a professor who thinks he can exorcise demons using science. His subject for his experiment is Jane Harper (Olivia Cooke), a possessed young girl with deep, dark secrets. Capturing the entire experiment is Brian McNeil played by Sam Claflin (.The Hunger Games: Catching Fire).

The recent resurrection of the historical Hammer Films studio was, of course, cause for much celebration among horror fans around the world. The British production company built a name for itself in horror in the 1960s and it's been great to have them back. (You don't have to bother with The Resident, but Hammer productions Wake Wood, Let Me In, and The Woman in Black are all worthwhile horror films.) The company's latest offering is, at best, a mixed bag. The Quiet Ones aims to combine an effectively creepy story set in 1974 with a bunch of "found footage" footage that serves no real purpose.
The plot is pure, simple Hammer stuff: a dedicated but plainly obsessed university professor (the great Jared Harris) and his two graduate students welcome the arrival of a new cameraman (Sam Claflin) who will document their work. And as poor Brian McNeil quickly discovers, the trio's...

Jane Harper is not the only thing that needs saving in Lionsgate ‘s new 70′s horror film The Quiet Ones.
Inspired by true events, The Quiet Ones tells the story of Professor Joseph Coupland and his team of researchers as they attempt to cure an abandoned foster child named Jane who has been surrounded by strange and alarming behavior her entire life. As their experiments begin to unfold, they recruit a young camera man named Sam to document their findings. What they don’t realize is that they may be dealing with something bigger than mental psychosis. They may be dealing with the supernatural.
Director John Pogue set out to build on the screenplay The Philip Experiment, written by Tom de Ville, and incorporate the fascination of parapsychology and social scientific research of the 50′s, 60′s, and 70′s with a horror film.

This week, Wamg sat down with Olivia Cooke, who plays the disturbed Jane Harper, in a small roundtable to discuss the supernatural, ‘Bates Motel’, and her upcoming projects. According to Sam Claflin, she also played a bit of a prank on us by telling us a story about Jared Harris and a ‘goblin’ that she completely fabricated. She certainly is a lot of fun! I enjoyed meeting the three stars from the upcoming film .The Quiet Ones. namely Sam Claflin (.The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.), Olivia Cooke (.Bates Motel.), and Jared Harris (.Sherlock Holmes: The Game of Shadows,. .Pompeii,. .Lincoln.).
The film, bearing the mark of Hammer Films, talks about extracting demonic energy or negative energy according to Professor Joseph Coupland (Harris) and he wants to do exactly just that to Jane Harper (Cooke) who has been talking about a supernatural entity named Evey. Coupland hires videographer, Brian McNeil (Claflin) to document the experiment.
I sat down with the cast to talk about their interest in making the movie, working on the set, and the age-old argument between science and the supernatural.
.The Quiet Ones. from director John Pogue arrives in theaters on Friday, April 25.

There's something more chilling about movies based on true events. Knowing that at least some version of what you're seeing on the screen actually happened in real life makes the movie more powerful. With the upcoming release of The Quiet Ones, we decided to reminisce about other movies based on horrific real life events.
The Quiet Ones is inspired by a true story of a university experiment done on a young girl that goes horribly, horribly wrong, so we focused on movies based on claims of supernatural true events.
There is a huge list of honorable mentions in this category. We could even break it down into sub-categories, like movies based on the antics of Ed Gein: The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, The Silence of the Lambs, Psycho and Deranged. True crime reenactments: In Cold Blood, Helter Skelter and Zodiac just to name a few of the best. Even real...

Flop. Hammer time. Okay, so the latest effort from the rejuvenated British studio isn't excruciatingly bad thanks to consistently impressive acting, but it fails to raise a shudder and squanders the chance to capitalise on their effective chiller The Woman in Black.
Based on supposedly true events, The Quiet Ones is set in 1974, which is established by the music of Slade frequently blaring out of the radio at regular intervals. After a while it starts to feel like one of those music-based torture methods apparently used at Guantanamo Bay.
The narrative revolves around Professor Coupland's (Jared Harris) dangerous paranormal experiment on troubled girl Jane (Olivia Cooke), for which he enlists the help of three students. The trio is spearheaded by The Hunger Games: Catching Fire...

Here’s a new trailer for the supernatural horror film The Quiet Ones, starring the great Jared Harris as an “unorthodox” professor dealing in dangerous experiments to explore the dark energy manifested by the damaged psyche of a young girl. So much screaming you can’t even handle it.
Just like The Conjuring, Quiet Ones is thankfully going back in time to tell the story rather than present day, so no cell phones to the rescue here.
The Quiet Ones opens April 25th, watch the first trailer we posted here and the new one below and tell us what you think.
