To say that’s been a rocky month at Fox News would be an understatement. First, in April, the conservative cable news network agreed to pay $787.5 million to settle a defamation suit from Dominion Voting Systems for airing lies about the company interfering in the 2020 presidential election — avoiding a trial that was bound to prove intensely embarrassing. Days later, they fired their biggest primetime star, Tucker Carlson, following a period of internal warfare between the host and top executives. Ratings immediately took a dive, with a wide swath of conservatives...

Disney and Netflix are generally viewed as two of the most bulletproof brands in the industry that can do no wrong in the eyes of many fans, but both have found themselves caught up in a storm of recent controversy. The Mouse House are facing widespread backlash for Mulan‘s connections to a region of China linked to human rights violations, while the world’s biggest streaming service are under fire for releasing a movie that’s angered a whole lot of people.
Cuties is a critically acclaimed and award-winning coming-of-age drama directed by an up-and-coming filmmaker that thought she’d lucked out in a big way when her feature debut was picked up by Netflix to be distributed to over 180 million subscribers worldwide, but one misjudged poster from the marketing team has seen it become one of the most talked about titles of the year for all the wrong reasons.

Netflix has defended its newly launched French film “Cuties” in the wake of backlash on social media, saying the film is “a social commentary against the sexualization of young children.”
“‘Cuties’ is a social commentary against the sexualization of young children,” a Netflix spokesperson said in a statement to TheWrap Friday. “It’s an award-winning film and a powerful story about the pressure young girls face on social media and from society more generally growing up — and we’d encourage anyone who cares about these important issues to watch the movie.”
The #CancelNetflix hashtag jumped to the top of Twitter’s trending section on Thursday morning, as some users complained the French film “Cuties,” which just hit the service on Wednesday with a Ma (mature audiences) rating, depicts a hyper-sexualized view of minors and promotes pedophilia. [Update: Netflix issued a statement saying “Cuties” is “a social commentary against the sexualization of young children” and encouraged critics to watch it.]
Controversial French film “Cuties” — about a young Senegalese girl in Paris who joins a “free-spirited dance clique” to escape family dysfunction — has spawned a new backlash against Netflix by critics who allege it goes over the line in portraying children in a sexualized manner.
The hashtag “#CancelNetflix” was the No. 1 trending topic on Twitter in the U.S. Thursday, after “Cuties” premiered Sept. 9 on Netflix.
A petition on Change.org calling on Netflix customers to cancel their subscriptions over “Cuties” and other content on the streaming service “that exploits children and creates a disturbing vibe,” currently has nearly 600,000 signers.
Criticism erupted in August over a promotional poster for “Cuties” depicting its young cast members in provocative poses and revealing costumes. Netflix at the time apologized for the image.

The #DeleteNetflix hashtag jumped to the top of Twitter’s trending section on Thursday morning, as some users complained the French film “Cuties,” which just hit the service on Wednesday, depicts a hyper-sexualized view of minors and promotes pedophilia. The hashtag gained momentum after a scene from the film, showing young girls dancing in a suggestive manner in front of adult spectators, was shared on Twitter.
“Cuties” focuses on Amy, an 11-year-old Senegalese girl who forms a twerking dance group with her other young friends. After being “bombarded with hyper-sexualized imagery,” Amy “envisions a dance routine, featuring grinding and twerking, that’s sure to be deemed inappropriate but that, in her mind, will put to rest the notion that she and her friends are children,” according to TheWrap’s review.
The backlash was spurred after the following clip from the movie was shared:
Netflix is comfortable with this. Plenty of people will defend it.
