In the spring of 2020, two films starring Daniel Radcliffe came out, almost back-to-back.
In Escape From Pretoria, he played Tim Jenkin, the real-life anti-apartheid activist and former political prisoner who in 1978 was part of a daring and successful breakout — using secretly made wooden keys — from a South African jail.
In Guns Akimbo, he played Miles, a computer programmer in a bonkers near-future who wakes up one morning to find that a criminal kingpin’s gang of henchmen — including a masked guy called Fuckface — had bloodily bolted guns onto each of his hands.
For those who had been keeping an eye on Radcliffe’s post-Harry Potter career, this quick-fire double of taut historical prison thriller and insane action-comedy sci-fi felt like the perfect summary as he neared almost a decade since leaving one of the world’s most successful movie franchises.

Warning: What you’re about to read is something of a Cinderella story.
Matt Spicer had only a couple of shorts under his belt, but when he sent his “Ingrid Goes West” screenplay to his agent, he got a call saying Aubrey Plaza wanted to play the lead — and then, Plaza was such a fan that she helped wrangle co-stars Elizabeth Olsen and O’Shea Jackson Jr. Things went so smoothly, production began just eight months after Spicer sent his agent the script.
And that’s when the trouble started.
The filmmakers lost a full day of shooting after a Santa Clarita wildfire destroyed one of their sets, while a plumbing problem at another location turned a house into a biohazard. Spicer also accidentally walked through a glass door, miraculously escaping with just a single two-inch gash on his arm.
This story has a happy ending: Neon acquired “Ingrid Goes West...

As far as creative-type biopics go, Genius is pretty harmless. John Logan’s screenplay (based on A. Scott Berg’s novelization) evokes the drawn-out, whimsical language of the late Thomas Wolfe’s vivacious energy, while Michael Grandage’s direction navigates a provocative, endearing time in American publication. Writers like Wolfe, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway were charming socialites with their eloquent verbiage, but behind every best seller was a desk-chained editor, killing scribbled darlings without remorse.
This is certainly a story of passion – and a mind consumed by praise – but more importantly, Grandage pays homage to the lesser-known heroes (and often-thought villains) of authored content. Praise be to the oh-so-overlooked editors, as bastardized and under-appreciated as they might be!

A troubling hush seems to follow Anton Corbijn’s fourth and least enthusiastically received Life, a snapshot on the short but intensely felt celebrity of actor James Dean revolving around a famed photo shoot for the titular magazine administered by Dennis Stock. Considering the film stars Dane DeHaan and Robert Pattinson in the lead roles, the lukewarm reception of the film seems surprising, beginning with a muted response at the premiere at the 2015 Berlin International Film Festival, where it played as a Special Gala Screening. Based on the film’s marketing and demure DVD release, one would be surprised to note Us distributor Cinedigm collected a titch over one million in box office following a limited theatrical and VOD release in December of 2015.

Or Something Like It: Corbijn Resurrects Dean Without a Cause
Following his 2014 John Le Carre adaptation A Man Most Wanted, director Anton Corbijn delves into the life of another desired individual, cherished cinematic icon James Dean with Life. Focusing on the behind-the-scenes relationship between Dean and photographer Dennis Stock during the creation of a belabored, but eventually fruitful 1955 photo shoot for the titular magazine, Luke Davies’ screenplay falls short of showcasing any kind of notable bond potentially worth documenting.
Two artists come together for what would eventually become a particularly notable moment for them both and Corbijn does a fine job of catching the significance of changing times. Dean exhibits the sort of Beat sensibility that had revived a new generation’s interest in literature the decade prior, and Corbijn catches him just at the cusp of the stardom that would possess the public’s attention. But neither persona manages...

Lenny Bruce: Dustin Hoffman in the 1974 Bob Fosse movie. Lenny Bruce movie review: Polemical stand-up comedian merited less timid biopic (Oscar Movie Series) Bob Fosse's 1974 biopic Lenny has two chief assets: the ever relevant free speech issues it raises and the riveting presence of Valerie Perrine. The film itself, however, is only sporadically thought-provoking or emotionally gripping; in fact, Lenny is a major artistic letdown, considering all the talent involved and the fertile material at hand. After all, much more should have come out of a joint effort between director Fosse, fresh off his Academy Award win for Cabaret; playwright-screenwriter Julian Barry, whose stage version of Lenny earned Cliff Gorman a Tony Award; two-time Best Actor Oscar nominee Dustin Hoffman (The Graduate, Midnight Cowboy); and cinematographer Bruce Surtees (Play Misty for Me, Blume in Love). Dane DeHaan and Daniel Radcliffe are reuniting with their Kill Your Darlings director John Krokidas to play the young Republican consultant Karl Rove and strategist Lee Atwater alongside Amanda Seyfried.
Xyz Films will handle international sales in Cannes on the story, based on true events surrounding a wild road trip the two friends undertook in the 1970s.
In Young Americans the cross-country journey becomes something of a crash course in dirty tricks as the pair encounter a young political femme fatale.

UTA Independent packaged the film and will be representing North American rights.
Principal photography is scheduled to kick off in autumn.

Daniel Radcliffe has been acting since the age of 9, when he played the young David Copperfield opposite Maggie Smith in the BBC’s 1999 adaptation of the classic Dickens story. But it was in 2001, when Radcliffe was cast as the titular boy wizard of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone that he became an internationally recognised movie star. Eight feature films, adapted from the seven novels by Jk Rowling, were to follow, grossing more than $7bn at the global box office.

After diving into rather dramatic indie territory with Kill Your Darlings last year, director John Krokidas is heading into young adult territory. However, thankfully it won't be another dystopian sci-fi adventure as THR reports Krokidas will be at the helm of the adaptation of Wonder, a novel by R.J. Palacio from 2012. Sounding similar to the 1985 film Mask, the film follows a 10-year-old boy named Auggie Pullman who has facial difference which has kept him from going to a mainstream school. We join him as he heads into fifth grade at Beecher Prep, only wanting to fit in. Of course, he'll teach everyone not to judge a book by its cover. This sounds pretty cheesy for a promising director like Krokidas, but maybe he'll bring a different kind of style to a story that could easily turn into something hokey. The book is pretty popular, having sold 2 million copies since being published a couple years ago,...

Having made his feature length directorial debut in 2013 with the Daniel Radcliffe-starring Kill Your Darlings, John Krokidas will now tackle Lionsgate’s Young Adult fiction adaptation of the award-winning book Wonder, by R.J. Palacio. The novel, which took the top slot of the New York Times bestseller list on publication, won both a Maine Student Book Award and Vermont’s Dorothy Canfield Fisher Children’s Book Award, as well as featuring on the Texas Bluebonnet Award master list. It is hardly surprising, then, that Hollywood would snap it up.
Wonder tells the story of 10-year-old Auggie Pullman, who has a rare facial malformation caused by mandibulofacial dysostosis. Viking movies have been a tough nut to crack for Hollywood. Mel Gibson has been trying for years, and Alexander Skarsgard has had one in the works for a while, but it looks like Baltasar Kormákur will beat the competition to the punch with his "Vikingr" (yes, that's how it's spelled). The filmmaker, who also co-wrote the script, has set up the movie over at Universal, and it's based on the classic tales deriving from the legendary Icelandic Sagas, which document larger than life heroes, adventures and battles of early Nordic settlers, as well as daily life in the Viking age. This is expected to be Kormákur's next gig after the upcoming "Everest." "Kill Your Darlings" director John Krokidas is drinking from the Ya cup, as he's been set to helm "Wonder." Based on the book by R.J. Palacio, it follows "a 10-year-old named Auggie Pullman, whose facial difference has...

In what's bound to be the latest in a string of enormously successful Ya adaptations, R.J. Palacio's debut novel, Wonder, is getting the big-screen treatment. Kill Your Darlings helmer John Krokidas has signed on to direct the film with a script by Jack Thorne, EW has confirmed. The Hollywood Reporter first reported the news. Palacio's 2012 novel follows the story of Auggie Pullman, a 10-year-old boy with a severe facial deformity and the struggles he faces when he attends public school for the first time after being home-schooled his entire life. Krokidas made his feature directorial debut with 2013's Kill Your Darlings,...

Jack Huston cast in 'Ben-Hur' remake? 'Boardwalk Empire' actor to follow in the footsteps of Ramon Novarro and Charlton Heston Jack Huston, best known for playing World War I veteran-turned-bootlegger-cum-assassin Richard Harrow in the HBO series Boardwalk Empire, may star in the latest Ben-Hur "remake," to be jointly produced by Paramount and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. I have "remake" between quotes because officially this fourth big-screen version of the semi-biblical epic (more on that below) isn't an actual remake of either the multiple Oscar-winning 1959 Ben-Hur or its 1925 predecessor, but a direct adaptation of former Civil War general Lew Wallace's 1880 bestselling novel Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ, which happens to be conveniently in the public domain. Timur Bekmambetov, whose credits include the Angelina Jolie-James McAvoy thriller Wanted and the supernatural cult classic Night Watch, has been attached as director of what is in fact A Tale...

Kill Your Darlings writer-director John Krokidas will direct Lionsgate's Ya adaptation Wonder. The film is based on R.J. Palacio's best-selling 2012 novel about a 10-year-old named Auggie Pullman, whose facial difference has kept him from going to a mainstream school. Now he's entering fifth grade at Beecher Prep and just wants to fit in, but he'll have to teach everyone around him that, as always, we are more than meets the eye. ★★★☆☆Kill Your Darlings (2013), director John Krokidas' ambitious debut feature, is about the early years of the hedonistic group of American writers who became known as the Beat Generation, as well as the violent murder that nearly derailed their literary movement in its infancy. It's autumn 1943 and the Second World War is raging, but the battlefields of Europe seem a million miles away from Columbia University where freshman Allen Ginsberg (Harry Potter's Daniel Radcliffe) meets sophomore Lucien Carr (Dane DeHaan) for the first time. Ginsberg is immediately drawn to Carr's subversive energy and his love of such unorthodox writers as Henry Miller and Arthur Rimbaud.

Telling the true story of someone's life in a film is a difficult task. The trappings of the biopic genre become glaringly apparent when filmmakers try to chronicle an entire life in a two-hour film. There are innumerable events over the course of a person’s lifespan that alter him or her, for better or worse, and humans are always undergoing change. Trying to discern which events are most important is a futile effort, and more often than not, the cradle-to-grave biopic results in a droll feature. However, when the filmmaker focuses on a constrained period of time in a person’s life and frames an entire film around that, the results can be fascinating. Such is the case with writer/director John Krokidas’ drama Kill Your Darlings, which chronicles the early college years of poet Allen Ginsberg and the beginnings of the Beat movement, using that as a springboard to explore themes of rebellion,...

Daniel Radcliffe, Dane DeHaan, Ben Foster, Boardwalk Empire’s Jack Huston, and Elizabeth Olsen play the coterie of ambitious free thinkers whose mission to rewrite the rules of literature is dramatically impacted by a real-life murder in 1944.

Because maybe you’re sick of seeing the same five John Wayne movies over and over again, pilgrim, the fates have aligned and given you something else you and your dad can watch together. Dane DeHaan and Daniel Radcliffe, those young sports who played a college-age Lucien Carr and Allen Ginsberg, respectively, in last year’s Kill Your Darlings, will play a timewarped Karl Rove and Lee Atwater in the buddy comedy of dear old dad’s dreams. College Republicans, which actually comes from the Kill Your Darlings team (directed by Darlings‘ John Krokidas) is the “based on true events” story from 1973 of the time when Rove (DeHaan) ran a dirty campaign to become the national College Republicans Chairman under the guidance of his campaign manager, Lee Atwater (Radcliffe). The gruesome twosome take a road trip together to find support for Rove’s candidacy. Zany. While the film is set up as a lighthearted story about two...

After teaming up last year for the Sundance selected drama Kill Your Darlings, young actors Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) and Dane DeHaan (Chronicle) are looking to reunite in two drastically different roles. After playing Allen Ginsberg and Lucien Carr respectively, Radcliffe and DeHaan are in talks to play Lee Atwater and Karl Rove in College Republicans, a film that once had Paul Dano and Shia Labeouf involved with Richard Linklater directing. Now The Wrap reports it will be Radcliffe and DeHaan's Kill Your Darlings director John Krokidas at the helm of the film which topped the Black List in 2010. Read on! The script comes from Wes Jones and took the top spot on the Black List amidst Oscar contenders like Argo, American Hustle and Margin Call. With flares of The Social Network, the film would follow a young Karl Rove (former White House Deputy Chief of Staff) as he vies...

Daniel Radcliffe clearly had a blast making Kill Your Darlings (he said as much on our Podcast, which you can find lurking at the bottom of the page). So it makes sense that he’d be seriously considering a reunion with director John Krokidas and co-star Dane DeHaan for College Republicans. If it all comes together – and various representatives have denied that it’s a done deal to The Wrap – the film would see Radcliffe and DeHaan playing the young Lee Atwater and Karl Rove long before they became powerbrokers in American politics. It would also represent a resurgent level of interest in Wes Jones’ script, which hit the Black List back in 2010 and later attracted the interest of Richard Linklater and Paul Dano as director and star, but then went quiet. The story is based on real events from the 1970s and follows Rove (DeHaan) as he runs a...

Fresh off playing the hedonistic, college-aged Beats Allen Ginsberg and Lucien Carr in Kill Your Darlings, The Wrap reports Daniel Radcliffe and Dane DeHaan are going back to school to play two very different people: Lee Atwater and Karl Rove, respectively. Directed by Darlings' John Krokidas, College Republicans is a buddy comedy about Rove's dirty 1973 campaign to become the national College Republican Chairman, for which Atwater was his campaign manager. The film is supposed to be somewhat of an origin story for the style of campaigning that's become common practice today. Hopefully, it's not also an origin story for how Rove got the nickname Turd Blossom.

Is it just me or is this the week of reunions? First, Jennifer Lawrence and David O. Russell, then, Liam Neeson and Martin Scorsese, and now, Dane DeHaan, Daniel Radcliffe and John Krokidas. Yup, that’s right, the Kill Your Darlings trio will team up again to make College Republicans. The Wes Jones-penned script, which was on the 2010 Black List, has been making the rounds in Hollywood for a while now. Paul Dano and Shia Labeouf were actually set for the lead roles at one point but of course, that didn’t work out.

Given Hollywood's focus more on things that go boom and sell toys, and less on dramas with human beings, it's probably not a total shock that "College Republicans" hasn't gained much traction since landing on the 2010 Black List. At one point Richard Linklater was attached to direct, with Shia Labeouf and Paul Dano linked to lead roles at various times, without anything ever coalescing. But the project is taking another swing at getting made, this time with a pair of compelling actors taking the starring roles. "Kill Your Darlings" pals Dane DeHaan and Daniel Radcliffe, will once again go to school together on the big screen. And that's not all. They're bringing their 'Darlings' director John Krokidas along to helm. "Kill Your Darlings" actors Daniel Radcliffe and Dane DeHaan are re-teaming with director John Krokidas on his second feature, the true story buddy comedy "College Republicans".
Radcliffe would play Lee Atwater and DeHaan stars as Karl Rove in the 1973-set film in which aspiring politician Rove runs a dirty campaign for national College Republican Chairman under the guidance of campaign manager Atwater (Radcliffe).
The pair go on a spirited road trip to drum up support for Rove's candidacy. Wes Jones wrote the script which ranked higher than the likes of "Argo" and "American Hustle" on the famed Black List.
Radcliffe's reps say he's not confirmed, the role is just one of several he's considering at this point. Shia Labeouf and Paul Dano were circling a previous version of the film.
Filming on the project aims to begin in November.

Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2) might look a bit like Harry Potter with his glasses in Kill Your Darlings, but don’t be fooled. He’s playing beat generation poet Allen Ginsberg.
Set in 1944, the biography movie tells the story of Ginsberg at Columbia, where he finds stuffy tradition clashing with modern ideas and attitudes embodied by Lucien Carr (Dane DeHaan, Chronicle). Shy, unsophisticated Ginsberg is fascinated by Carr and drawn into his hard-drinking, jazz-clubbing friends, including William Burroughs (Ben Foster, Contraband), the dissolute scion of a wealthy family, and David Kammerer (Michael C. Hall, TV’s Dexter), an older hanger-on who resents Ginsberg’s position as Carr’s new sidekick. Everything gets shaken up when there’s a murder.
