Sarah Michelle Gellar in Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997)
Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival casting characters named Nova, Hugo, and Gracie
Sarah Michelle Gellar in Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997)
Six and a half years ago, it was announced that a reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer was in development with Monica Owusu-Breen, co-creator of the TV show Midnight, Texas, writing, executive producing, and serving as showrunner. It was said that the new show would be “contemporary, building on the mythology of the original.” That project never made it into production – and last month, it was revealed that we’re going to be getting a Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival instead, with Sarah Michelle Gellar returning to the role of Buffy Summers and Chloé Zhao directing the first episode. Now, TV Line reports that casting calls have gone out for characters named Nova, Hugo, and Gracie.

TV Line is fairly certain that the name Nova is just a placeholder and the character will end up being called something else – but whatever the name may be, this character is the new teenage vampire slayer that Buffy,...

The casting call reads: "Looking for actual teens or actors in their 20s for all teenage roles. Open ethnicity for all characters."

Buffy The Vampire Slayer Star Sarah Michelle Gellar Confirms Talks To Return For Sequel Series
Image
"If the apocalypse comes, beep me!"

Following the recent trade reports that Buffy the Vampire Slayer is officially set to return to send the creatures of the night running for cover, the star of the original series has confirmed her involvement - although it doesn't sound like everything is set in stone just yet.

Sarah Michelle Gellar took to Instagram to share the following message with her fans.

"So….. you might have heard some news this week, but I realize you haven’t heard from me. Three years ago, I got a call from my dear friend and mentor, Gail Berman. She told me that she wanted me to sit down with Chloé Zhao to hear her take on a potential “Buffy” revival. I was blown away that Chloé even knew who I was, but, as I’ve always done, I told Gail that I just didn’t see a...

Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival: Sarah Michelle Gellar reveals that talks began three years ago

Now, Gellar has taken to social media to confirm that a revival is in the works, and that talks started three years ago!

Buffy Sequel Series From Eternals Director Officially In The Works; Sarah Michelle Gellar Will Return
Image
Buffy the Vampire Slayer is officially set to return to combat the forces of darkness.

The trades have confirmed that Buffy is being resurrected for a new Hulu series, which will serve as more of a sequel to the original show than a full reboot, as Sarah Michelle Gellar is set to reprise her iconic role.

Though Gellar is now said to be in final talks to play Buffy Summers in the untitled project, she would not be the main focus. The story will reportedly follow the adventures of a new Slayer, with Gellar appearing in a recurring role rather than leading the series.

Nora Zuckerman and Lila Zuckerman are attached to write, showrun, and executive produce, with Eternals director Chloé Zhao set to helm the pilot and executive produce under her Book of Shadows production banner. Gellar would also executive produce along with Gail Berman. Fran Kuzui and Kaz Kuzui...

Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot with Sarah Michelle Gellar close to happening
Image
Buffy the Vampire Slayer concluded in 2003 after seven seasons on the air, and remains a beloved and influential show to this day. There's been talk over the years of rebooting Buffy, with original series creator Joss Whedon working with showrunner Monica Owusu-Breen on a new show a while back. But that idea fizzled out a couple of years ago, probably because Whedon was accused of toxic behavior on his sets and has since been excommunicated from Hollywood.

But lately there have been signs of something stirring, with original series star Sarah Michelle Gellar coming around to the idea of a revival. “I always used to say no because it’s in its bubble, and it’s so perfect,” she said last month. "But watching [recent reboot shows] Sex And The City and seeing Dexter, and realizing there are ways to do it, definitely does get your mind thinking, ‘Well, maybe.'”

She may...

A Buffy the Vampire Slayer Sequel Series Would Make Our Current Hellmouth a Little Easier to Face
Image
Into every generation a Slayer is born, and I need the new one to get here, stakes blazing, Asap.

The news of Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s potential sequel series, a project in the works at Hulu, broke Monday. Sarah Michelle Gellar, aka Buffy herself, is said to be on board as a recurring presence in a story about a whole new vamp hunter. Even better: Several exciting, key, from-the-original-series-behind-the-scenes folks are also involved (producers Gail Berman, Fran and Kaz Kuzui, Dolly Parton), while another (disgraced original Buffy creator Joss Whedon) is not.

'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' Reboot With Sarah Michelle Gellar in the Works at Hulu
Image
After 20 years off the air, Buffy the Vampire Slayer might be returning to television. According to a new report, Sarah Michelle Gellar has signed on to reprise her role as Buffy Summers in a new take on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. While labeled a reboot, the upcoming pilot for Hulu will be a continuation of the story from the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer series from 1997 to 2003. Gellar will also serve as an executive producer.

Deadline reports that Academy Award-winning director Chloé Zhao is set to direct the pilot. Zhao, who also directed Marvel's Eternals, has a first-look deal with Searchlight TV and 20th Television, who is producing the Buffy the Vampire Slayer pilot. Zhao herself is a self-proclaimed Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan. The pilot was written by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman, best known for Poker Face. ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ Reboot With Sarah Michelle Gellar in the Works at Hulu
Image
Cue the Nerf Herder guitar riff: A Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot is in the offing.

Hulu is developing a follow-up to the cult favorite series, with original star Sarah Michelle Gellar attached. The new project comes from writers Nora and Lilla Zuckerman (Poker Face, Fringe) and 20th Television and is described as “the next chapter in the Buffyverse.” Oscar winner Chloé Zhao (Nomadland, Eternals) is set to direct.

Hulu and 20th TV declined comment.

Sources say the new Buffy would focus on a younger Slayer and that Gellar’s Buffy Summers would not be the central character. Although Buffy lore dictated that only one Slayer could exist at a time, its final season upended that notion with the awakening of hundreds of potential Slayers for the show’s endgame.

Gellar, who’s currently starring in Showtime’s Dexter: Original Sin, had said in the past that she wouldn’t...

In every generation, there is a chosen one — again.

Variety has learned from sources that a sequel series to the beloved show “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” is nearing a pilot order at Hulu.

Sources say that Sarah Michelle Gellar is in final talks to once again play the iconic title character in the untitled project, although it would focus on a new Slayer and Gellar would appear in a recurring role rather than leading the series.

Gellar would also executive produce along with Gail Berman. ‘Buffy The Vampire Slayer’ Reboot Starring Sarah Michelle Gellar Nears Hulu Pilot Order With Chloé Zhao Directing
Image
More than two decades after Buffy the Vampire Slayer ended its seven-season run, the beloved supernatural drama is eyeing a revival with a new chapter in the franchise. A followup series is nearing a pilot order from Hulu, with Sarah Michelle Gellar expected to star, reprising her signature role as Buffy Summers, sources said. Oscar winner Chloé Zhao, a self-professed lifelong Buffy fan, is set to direct the pilot, written by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman (Poker Face). The reboot hails from Buffy the Vampire Slayer studio 20th Television and Disney sibling Searchlight TV where Zhao has been under a first-look deal.

Beyond the pilot order, I hear the reboot is starting a writers room soon, a sign that Hulu and the studios have high expectations for the project going to series. It is unclear yet whether other original Buffy cast members would return; that is considered likely.

Described as the next chapter in the Buffyverse,...

Sarah Michelle Gellar is coming around to the idea of a Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival
Image
Buffy the Vampire Slayer was a monster-hunting fantasy series that ran from 1997-2003; it's been over a for a long time now, but in an age of constant reboots and revivals, it's surprising that it's never come back in one form or another. "Into every generation a slayer is born," we're told in the intro. It's been over 20 years. Where's the next one?

Well, there actually was a reboot in development at one time, executive produced by original Buffy creator Joss Whedon with Monica Owusu-Breen serving as showrunner. But so far as we can tell, it's dead. Why? Well, it might have something to do with Whedon being excommunicated from Hollywood after allegations of his toxic workplace behavior surfaced, with multiple stars on his shows and movies — among them Justice League star Ray Fisher and Angel star Charisma Carpenter — coming forward. Sarah Michelle Gellar, the original star on Buffy the Vampire Slayer,...

Buffy Star Sarah Michelle Gellar Is Now Open To Returning As The Iconic Vampire Slayer
Image
It sounds like Sarah Michelle Gellar might be willing to sharpen some stakes and rejoin the battle against the creatures of the night after all.

There's been talk of a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot in some form or another for over a decade at this stage, but last year, we learned that the latest attempt to revive the franchise featuring a Black lead from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. scribe Monica Owusu-Breen had been put on pause.

Whether that series or some other incarnation of Buffy ever sees the light of day remains to be seen, but one person who could turn out to be the deciding factor is the actress who played Buffy Summers herself.

Gellar has previously dismissed the idea of returning as Buffy for any proposed revival of the show.

"I'm not," said Gellar when asked if she'd be open to returning for...

Sarah Michelle Gellar Changes View On A Buffy Return Amidst Reboot Speculation
Image
Sarah Michelle Gellar has changed her view on returning to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, explaining why her opinion has shifted, as speculation about a reboot continues. Especially over the past decade or so, as reboots and revivals of all sorts have become increasingly common on television, Gellar has maintained a reluctance to visit her most iconic role. The Golden Globe nominee has joked that she might be too old, though she added that she supports the idea of someone else taking up the mantle.

In an interview on The Drew Barrymore Show, while promoting her new series Dexter: Original Sin with co-star Christian Slater, Gellar sounded more open to playing Buffy Summers again. The actor pointed to the success of Dexter as a franchise and revivals like Max's Sex and the City sequel series as reasons why a Buffy reprisal could work. Gellar's full quote is transcribed below:

Gellar: It's funny.

How ‘Dune: Prophecy’ Showrunner Created a Conversation With Denis Villeneuve’s Movies
Image
[This story contains some spoilers from the first two episodes of Dune: Prophecy.]

Dune: Prophecy took a winding path to the small screen, but showrunner Alison Schapker was more than ready to take the reins of HBO’s latest spinoff of a beloved Warner Bros.’ film franchise.

Alison Schapker

The six-episode series about the origin of the mysterious Bene Gesserit changed creative leadership a few different times until Schapker and Diane Ademu-John became co-creators and co-showrunners. When production began in late 2022, Schapker then took on the role of sole showrunner through its delivery to the network. It was familiar territory for the scribe, having most recently served as an executive producer on Westworld season four and showrunner on Altered Carbon season two. Overall, her sci-fi credentials were fine-tuned across two decades for various Bad Robot shows including Alias, Lost, Fringe, Almost Human and the aforementioned Westworld. She even had the bittersweet task of writing out the fan-favorite character of Mr. Eko...

Whatever Happened to the Buffy Reboot?
Image
In 2018, it was announced that a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot was in the early stages of development, and fans of the original series were ecstatic. Monica Owusu-Breen, known for shows like Alias and Fringe, was slated to serve as the series showrunner, while Buffy creator Joss Whedon was attached to the project as an executive producer. Having run for eight seasons from 1997 to 2003, the show garnered a massive fan base as well as critical acclaim. There was even a successful spin-off titled Angel that ran for five seasons from 1999 to 2004. In the years after the series aired, new fans flocked to the show thanks to its availability on streaming platforms. As such, the series was inevitably ripe for a reboot as it continued to amass a cult-like following.

However, since that original announcement nearly six years ago, the possibility of a Buffy reboot has seemed to fall to the wayside.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series reboot is still in the works, according to Dolly Parton
Dolly Parton
Legendary country star Dolly Parton was an uncredited executive producer on the Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series, as the show came from her production company Sandollar Productions, which she co-founded with her former manager, Sandy Gallin. So if there’s anyone who should have an idea of what’s going on with the Buffy reboot that was announced some years back, it’s Dolly – and she said it’s still in the works.

Five and a half years have gone by since it was announced that a reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer was in development with Monica Owusu-Breen, co-creator of the TV show Midnight, Texas, writing, executive producing, and serving as showrunner. It was said that the new show would be “contemporary, building on the mythology of the original”. A year and a half ago, Owusu-Breen’s fellow executive producer Gail Berman said the project was “on pause...

Buffy The Vampire Slayer TV Reboot Gets Unexpected Update From Dolly Parton
Image
Dolly Parton provides an update on the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot, saying there is still work being done to "revamp" it. The planned 2018 reboot faced various challenges and is on an indefinite pause. Other spinoff ideas, like a prequel centered on Rupert Giles or a series focused on Faith, were pitched but never materialized.

The long-gestating Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot gets an update from Dolly Parton, who was an uncredited producer on the original show. The news of a revived take on Buffy again gained steam in 2018. That development had begun the reboot process of the game-changing supernatural teen drama, and Monica Owusu-Breen would be the showrunner. At the time, it was reported that series creator Joss Whedon would be involved as an executive producer, in addition to working on the script with Owusu-Breen. As of August 2022, however, original executive producer Gail Berman confirmed that the Buffy reboot is on pause.

‘Percy Jackson And The Olympians’ Premiere Surpasses 26M Views Since Debut On Disney+ & Hulu
Image
Exclusive: Percy Jackson and the Olympians is firing on all cylinders for Disney+.

The premiere episode of the streamer’s original series, based on the books by Rick Riordan, has now amassed 26.2M views in its first three weeks on Disney+ and Hulu, according to the company. That’s double the viewership it managed in its first week.

Disney says that all five available episodes have surpassed 10M views in their first week on the platform, which seems to stay in line with the premiere’s initial viewership, though some decline is very usual and expected as the season progresses.

The company defines a view as hours viewed divided by runtime, similar to Netflix’s calculation.

Nielsen data for Percy Jackson and the Olympians could be available as early as Thursday, if the first two episodes manage to make it into the streaming top 10 in their first week on the service.

‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ Premieres to 13.3 Million Viewers (Exclusive)
Image
The first episode of “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” brought in 13.3 million viewers in its first six days on Disney+ and Hulu.

This number puts the series among the top five most-watched season premieres in all of 2023 on both streaming services. While the exact titles that make up the top five lists are unknown, both platforms released major titles this year. Among Disney+ debuts were “The Mandalorian” Season 3, “Loki” Season 2, “Ahsoka” and “Secret Invasion.” Hulu releases in 2023 included “The Bear” Season 2, “Only Murders in the Building” Season 3, “The Kardashians” Seasons 3 and 4, “American Horror Stories” Season 3, the “Futurama” reboot and more.

13.3 million viewers in six days marks an impressive showing for “Percy Jackson.” For comparison, previously released premiere statistics from Disney+ include “Ahsoka,” which reached a slightly higher 14 million viewers in a slightly shorter five days of viewing, and “Loki” Season 2, which reached 10.9 million premiere viewers in just three days — and...

‘Percy Jackson And The Olympians’: Disney+ Series’ Premiere To Also Stream On Hulu
Image
In another sign of Disney+ and Hulu’s deepening ties, the first episode of Disney+’s high profile new original series Percy Jackson and the Olympians will launch on Hulu, concurrent to the series’ two-episode premiere on Disney+ Dec. 20. The announcement was made by Percy Jackson author Rick Riordan at the series’ premiere in New York Wednesday night.

The first episode will be available on Hulu through Jan. 31 while new episodes of Percy Jackson will be released weekly on Disney+.

Disney used a similar strategy recently with Disney+’s Star Wars series Andor, whose two-episode premiere was also made available on Hulu, and with the Disney+ original series Goosebumps, whose entire first season was shared on both streamers.

The moves come as Disney just rolled out a beta version of the “one-app experience,” combining Hulu — now fully owned — and Disney+ for bundle subscribers. The merged app will officially launch in March.

‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ to Premiere on Hulu Alongside Disney+
Image
“Percy Jackson and the Olympians,” the Disney+ series based on the book series of the same name, will concurrently launch on Hulu on Dec. 20.

Only the first episode will stream on Hulu, while Disney+ will get two episodes on the premiere date, followed by new episodes weekly. Additionally, Episode 1 will remain on Hulu only through Jan. 31.

The news was announced by “Percy Jackson” author and series co-creator Rick Riordan during the show’s red carpet premiere at the Met Museum in New York City on Wednesday.

The series marks a long-waited adaptation for the IP, as Riordan published the first “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” book in 2005. 20th Century Fox released two “Percy Jackson” films in 2010 and 2013, but changes to the books and Riordan’s lack of involvement made them unpopular among the fanbase, and the studio never adapted the last three books.

“After the movie experience, I basically wrote off Hollywood for a long,...

Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The End of Times Are Near in Official Trailer
Carl Weathers, Giancarlo Esposito, Pedro Pascal, Shirley Henderson, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, Katee Sackhoff, Amy Sedaris, Omid Abtahi, Emily Swallow, and Katy O'Brian in The Mandalorian (2019)
A storm is brewing, and this one could usher in the end of times.

Disney+ has released a new trailer for Percy Jackson and the Olympians, and there's a good chance it will be the streaming service's best series this year.

With the Marvel Cinematic Universe imploding on both the big screen and on streaming, and the tepid response to The Mandalorian Season 3, Disney+ is betting on Percy Jackson and the Olympians.

In the past, Disney+ hasn't put its marketing muscle behind projects outside the MCU and Star Wars universe.

If the series manages to break through, it will probably urge the streaming service to take more significant risks.

Adapting Rick Riordan's bestselling book series for the small screen already looks to be paying off.

While the two big-screen adaptations were criticized, everything we see for Percy Jackson and the Olympians looks like a natural next step for the franchise.

‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ Trailer Teases the Demigod’s Quest
Image
The latest trailer for Percy Jackson and the Olympians takes viewers farther into the challenges its title character will face.

The new clip follows an earlier teaser that focused on Percy’s (Walker Scobell) realization that he’s a demigod — the child of a Greek god and a human — and expands on it, showing the characters in previously unseen settings and facing off against new threats as he and his friends Annabeth (Leah Sava Jeffries) and Grover (Aryan Simhadri) race to return Zeus’ master lightning bolt to Olympus..

Percy Jackson and the Olympians is based on author Rick Riordan’s best-selling quintet of novels; the eight-episode first season, which premieres Dec. 20, will follow the events of the first book in the series, The Lightning Thief. ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ Trailer: Welcome to Camp Half-Blood
Image
Olympus is calling: The trailer for the upcoming “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” series, set to premiere Dec. 20, has been released by Disney+.

Based on Rick Riordan’s popular young adult book series of the same name, the show follows a 12-year-old boy named Percy (Walker Scobell) who leads a seemingly normal life until he learns he’s a half-blood: half human, half Greek god.

As the son of Poseidon, Percy must move to Camp Half-Blood, where demigod children receive protection and training to hone their unique skills. Percy is soon called to go on his first quest: He must find Zeus’s stolen lightning bolt with the help of his friends, a satyr named Grover (Aryan Simhadri) and fellow half-blood Annabeth (Leah Sava Jeffries), daughter of Athena.

In the trailer, Percy, Grover and Annabeth find their footing at Camp Half-Blood and fight mythical creatures along their quest.

Walker Scobell in Percy Jackson and the Olympians (2023)
After nearly 15 years, “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” author Rick Riordan is out with a new book centered on the original core trio of Percy, Annabeth and Grover, “Percy Jackson and the Olympians: Chalice of the Gods.” But, will this new set of adventures make it into the upcoming Disney+ series? Well, for Riordan, it’s too soon to say — but he’s not opposed to it.

“That is just too far down the horizon to know the answer to. I don’t know,” he told TheWrap at his Chicago book tour stop on Sunday. “I mean, right now we’re just focusing on season one. And if it does well, who knows? You know, the kids are totally excited. Even after all the work they’ve done, they’re still really excited to get back to it, so I know they’re looking forward to whatever is going to...
