Exclusive: Even as Denis Villeneuve puts finishing touches on the script for the next installment in the Dune franchise, the director already has his sights set on a new addition to the all-star ensemble. While sources close to the project say no formal offer has been presented, Deadline is hearing there is strong interest in Robert Pattinson joining the cast. Legendary had no comment.
The film already features an A-list ensemble that includes Timothée Chalamet, Florence Pugh and Zendaya, and many are expected to return. Even so, a handful of new roles remain and, as with any Dune project, stars are always lining up at the chance to appear in the Oscar-winning franchise.
While its unknown who Pattinson would play if a deal closes, the role is expected to be a significant one.
As Deadline previously reported, the plan is to shoot the film this summer. Villeneuve is returning to direct.

Grant Gustin revealed his initial reaction to The Flash's "Duet" episode. Fans consider that Supergirl crossover a highlight of the Arrowverse, especially Kara Danvers and Barry Allen's musical number.
The Flash was the best show in The CW's Arrowverse. Fans went through a rollercoaster of emotions across nine seasons of The Flash, especially its crossover episodes. Season 3's "Duet" caught audiences by surprise, however; the plot involved Kara Danvers and Barry Allen trapped in a musical dreamworld. "Duet" was surreal because it broke from the show's grounded narrative, but audiences loved the novelty. Critics praised "Duet" for its lighthearted tone and endearing ensemble, but Grant Gustin had reservations about filming that episode; he told Michael Rosenbaum that "Duet" was an odd turn for the show.

The CW's The Flash Star John Wesley Shipp has talked about the immediate connection he had with his co-star and fellow Barry Allen actor Grant Gustin. Shipp starred as the titular DC character in 1990's The Flash CBS series before returning to play Gustin's father, Henry Allen, in the Arrowverse.
The Flash franchise veteran Shipp discussed the length of his tenure as the Scarlet Speedster and his relationship with his co-star Gustin at Megacon. In response to Cbr's question about how long he has been involved with the character, he stated, "35 years. As many years as Grant Gustin has been alive." Shipp continued, "It was an immediate connection. This is a guy who's a truthful actor. He knew I'd been the Flash, and I knew what he was taking on." In addition to playing Barry Allen in CBS' The Flash and Henry Allen in The CW's iteration, Shipp also starred as Jay Garrick,...

Having played the iconic DC character the Flash longer than anyone, Grant Gustin has now given insight into how he kept the Scarlet Speedster fresh for so long. Gustin played the Barry Allen incarnation of the character in The CW's The Flash for nine seasons and also appeared in crossovers and other shows across the Arrowverse.
Gustin told Cbr at Megacon that the show retained its freshness because he took the responsibility of playing the Flash seriously. "It was never an intentional thought about how to keep it fresh," he began. "I'm a very scene-by-scene actor. I wanted to keep it realistic. The only reason I did a decent job with the show is I took it very seriously. Try not to suck." Gustin's dedication to playing the Crimson Comet has always been evident in interactions with fans throughout his years of playing the character in the show that ended its run two years ago.

Last year, HBO tried its hand at making a Dune TV show: set 10,000 years before Paul Atreides was born, Dune: Prophecy told the story of Valya and Tula Harkonnen (Emily Watson and Olivia Williams), sisters who are in charge of the Bene Gesserit order during this early period in its history. The first season only lasted six episodes, but they were lushly produced, splendidly acted, and ended leaving fans wanting more. HBO will give it to them with a second season.
When it comes to these big sci-fi and fantasy projects, fans have gotten used to having to wait years between new seasons. Unfortunately, that looks like it will also happen with Dune: Prophecy. Although we don't know all the details, Emily Watson told ScreenRant that she expects filming on the second season to start up later this year. "I think we are going to start in the fall, and...

Dune: Prophecy unfolds approximately 10,000 years before Paul Atreides’ rise to power. The series centers on the Harkonnen sisters, Valya and Tula, as they ascend to the leadership of the relatively new Bene Gesserit order, with Valya becoming the Mother Superior. Although these characters are created for the show, showrunner Alison Schapker skillfully bridges the ancient past with events familiar from the Dune novels and films.
The complex world of Dune presents challenges for any adaptation, and Dune: Prophecy tackles its time period with notable ambition. While diverging from the books in certain areas, the series incorporates gripping elements to captivate viewers. Its production quality is exceptional, and the morally complex characters evoke comparisons to Game of Thrones. The season finale wraps up some storylines, yet boldly leaves others unfinished, compelling fans to anticipate what Season 2 will bring. This list features the most burning (pun intended) questions.

Denis Villeneuve has a strict rule when it comes to working on his movie sets: no cell phones. The Dune filmmaker has commented on enforcing a ban on cell phones at the start of filming, explaining how it serves as a distraction from the art that the cast and crew are working together to create.
"Human beings are ruled by algorithms right now,” Villeneuve recently said about the modern correlation between people and technology, per the L.A. Times. “We behave like AI circuits. The ways we see the world are narrow-minded binaries. We’re disconnecting from each other, and society is crumbling in some ways. It’s frightening.”

The following contains spoilers for Dune: Prophecy Season 1, Episode 6, "The High-Handed Enemy," which premiered Sunday, Dec. 22 on HBO.
The story of Dune: Prophecy is only just beginning. The show's first season taps into the origins of the Bene Gesserit as they're led by sisters Valya and Tula Harkonnen, played respectively by Emily Watson and Olivia Williams, on a secret campaign to put a Sister on the throne and raise House Harkonnen's status. The decades-long plan gets thwarted when Travis Fimmel's Desmond Hart arrives from Arrakis with strange powers.
At a press conference attended by Cbr that discussed Dune: Prophecy's first season, including the finale, showrunner Alison Shapkner announced a second season has been renewed by HBO, and teased where the story will take Valya, Tula and everyone else next. Sadly, that doesn't include Mark Strong's Emperor Javicco Corrino, whom Alison confirms is definitely dead and "leaves a big power vacuum.

The first season finale of Dune: Prophecy is in the can, and it was by far the most action-packed, eventful episode of the show so far. The twists came fast and furious. Desmond Hart arrested Tula Harkonnen, who it ends up is his mother! Valya Harkonnen travels to Arrakis with Princess Ynez and Kieran Atreides! And things at the Bene Gesserit school on Wallach IX have completely fallen apart.
It sets up a lot of exciting plotlines for season 2, which we now know is coming. In the meanwhile, we got to participate in a roundtable interview with lead actors Emily Watson (Valya) and Olivia Williams (Tula), as well as Dune: Prophecy showrunner Alison Schapker.

Dune: Prophecy season 1 uses the term "imprinting," which may raise some questions for TV viewers. The world created by Frank Hebert's Dune books is expansive on its own, but with the lore additions from Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson's expanded novels, HBO's prequel series has plenty of material to go off of. Even still, the TV show has expanded on the Dune universe with new characters, powers, and mysteries to be unearthed by long-term book fans and first-timers alike. Dune: Prophecy's season 1 ending resolves some of these mysteries, but there are still stones left unturned.

The first season of Dune: Prophecy wrapped up last night with "The High-Handed Enemy," an eventful episode that left many of our characters in new and unexpected places. On Wallach IX, Dorotea — a Bene Gesserit sister killed decades ago — took over the body of her granddaughter Lila (Chloe Lea) and is now trying to steer the Sisterhood in a whole new direction. Tula Harkonnen (Olivia Williams) is now a prisoner of her son Desmond Hart (Travis Fimmel) on the planet Salusa Secundus, and Valya Harkonnen (Emily Watson) has traveled with Princess Ynez (Sarah-Sofie Boussnina) and swordmaster Kieran Atredies (Chris Mason) to the desert world of Arrakis to find out who's been manipulating Desmond from behind the scenes, and why.
Those are a lot of threads to leave dangling ahead. Happily, we now know the show will continue with a second season. Unhappily, it probably won't happen for a couple of years.

“Dune: Prophecy” on HBO is preparing for its second season after an exciting finale revealing shocking family secrets. It set the stage for a trip to Arrakis, the famous desert planet. The sci-fi show, set 10,000 years before the story of Paul Atreides, has been officially renewed, which means that fans will learn more about this beloved world.
There were some big surprises in the Season 1 finale. The bad guy Desmond Hart, played by Travis Fimmel, is Tula Harkonnen’s secret son, played by Olivia Williams. She has kept this secret from her sister Valya, who Emily Watson plays for many years. This complicated family relationship worsens the conflict, especially since Desmond’s brief reconciliation with Tula led to her arrest.
Watson stated, “Everything has changed,” as he thought about Valya’s broken outlook. She clarified that Valya still follows her sense of destiny, even though her views have been turned upside down.

The season 1 finale of Dune: Prophecy brought us lots of twists and turns. Tula Harkonnen is Desmond Hart's mother! Valya Harkonnen is now on Arrakis! The Bene Gesserit school is in utter disarray!
Naturally, there were also character deaths. Valya assigned the Bene Gesserit sister Francesca to kill Emperor Javicco Corrino (Mark Strong), the father of her son, but she didn't seem like she was going to go through with it. But she didn't need to: despairing after learning that his life was the result of a series of manipulations by the Sisterhood, Javicco drove a blade into his own body. And then his wife Natalya (Jodhi May) came in and killed Francesca (Tabu) with the very poisoned needle that was intended to kill her husband.

The following contains spoilers for Dune: Prophecy Season 1, Episode 6, "The High-Handed Enemy," which premiered Sunday, Dec. 22 on HBO.
Back in May of this year, it was announced that Dune: Prophecy had tapped Tabu, an acclaimed Indian actor, to play Sister Francesca in the series. Ever since the series premiere, it's been a waiting game to see when she'd appear on-screen and what type of role Sister Francesca will play in the present day storyline. Sister Francesca's role turned out to be short-lived yet important as it showed the different types of lives members of the Sisterhood can live around the universe.
Sister Francesca saw her end in the Season 1 finale (possibly series finale) after being poisoned by Empress Natayla, the wife of Francesca's lover, Emperor Javicco Corrino. This comes just after Francesca questions her loyalty to Valya Harkonnen, who orchestrated Francesca and Javicco's affair as only a small part of...

Given what happened in the Dune: Prophecy Season 1 finale, “Everything has changed,” says series star Emily Watson. And though she was speaking strictly for her character, Mother Superior Valya Harkonnen, the same could be said for the sci-fi prequel series as a whole.

Note: This story contains spoilers from “Dune: Prophecy” Episode 6.
“Dune: Prophecy” finally took some characters to the fabled planet Arrakis in the finale of Season 1, but much more of the locale is to come in the second season.
The first season of the sci-fi prequel – which explored the rise of the Bene Gesserit 10,000 years before the birth of Paul Atreides – ended with Valya (Emily Watson) escaping to the desert planet with Ynez (Sarah-Sofie Boussina) and Keiran (Chris Mason) as Desmond (Travis Fimmel) took more control of Salusa Secundus.
Showrunner Alison Schapker admitted at a recent press conference that Arrakis has been “exerting its pull from afar” after a season of keeping its distance — “whether that’s in the economics of spice trade or the psychological aspects and nightmares that are sort of imagery of Arrakis and Desmond’s past seeping into everyone’s consciousness.” She emphasized the satisfaction of actually...

[This story contains major spoilers from the Dune: Prophecy season finale.]
The hierarchy of the Dune universe just changed.
No, the Rock was nowhere to be found on the season finale of HBO’s Dune: Prophecy. Instead, it’s a different rock taking center stage: Arrakis, the desert planet at the heart of Frank Herbert’s novels on which the show is based.
While Arrakis is referenced throughout the first six-episode season, Dune: Prophecy avoided actually bringing the planet to life onscreen, save for some brief (but important) holographic flashes. Now, the thing is well and fully on display, thanks to the last scene of the finale. The spicy world of Arraks is officially on the map, and stands ready for exploration in the recently announced season two.
In a press conference last week, Dune: Prophecy showrunner Alison Schapker said the change in scenery was decided on after “a season of Arrakis kind of exerting its pull from afar,...

After Tula discovers Desmond Hart is her son, Dune: Prophecy delivers another mixed bag of an episode. Across its first five, the prequel has varied in quality. Billed as a Bene Gesserit origin story, the series has been light on the in-fighting within the Sisterhood, focusing instead on an anti-Imperium rebellion, authoritarianism under the reign of Emperor Javico Corrino, and a strange and troubling prophecy that has something to do with the Machine War that took place before the events of the series.
Set in the universe of Frank Herbert's Dune series, this sci-fi epic follows the political and spiritual struggles on the desert planet of Arrakis. As factions vie for control of the prized spice melange, a prophesied hero emerges, challenging the balance of power and the fate of the galaxy.

Indian cinema star Tabu plays a pivotal role in the “Dune” universe in Max’s prequel series “Dune: Prophecy,” appearing as Sister Francesca in the final two episodes.
Inspired by “Sisterhood of Dune” by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, the series is set 10,000 years before the events of “Dune” and follows two Harkonnen sisters as they combat forces threatening humankind’s future while establishing what will become the Bene Gesserit order.
Alison Schapker serves as showrunner and executive producer, with Diane Ademu-John co-developing the series and serving as executive producer. Anna Foerster executive produced and directed multiple episodes.
The role came to Tabu – whose international credits include Mira Nair’s “The Namesake” (2006) and “A Suitable Boy” (2020) and Ang Lee’s “Life of Pi” (2012) – through a straightforward process.

Max's epic prequel series Dune: Prophecy explores the early period of the beloved sci-fi franchise, and the origins of the Bene Gesserits will continue in season 2. Developed for the screen by Diane Ademu-John and Alison Schapker, Prophecy loosely adapts the book series by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, which explores the early periods of each of the major houses in the Dune franchise. More specifically, Dune: Prophecy concerns the rise of the Bene Gesserit sect, and how they assumed control over the events of the universe more than 10,000 years before Paul Atreides' rise to power.
With the heady complex lore of the Dune franchise as its backdrop, Dune: Prophecy follows in the footsteps of other HBO hits like Game of Thrones. Considering the plethora of events that could be investigated by the series, there was no reason to think that Prophecy would be a one-and-done miniseries. Planting seeds (much...

Humans and dissenting orcs must work together to confront the true evil that threatens them all. Season 1 of Dune: Prophecy, the TV spin-off prequel to Denis Villeneuve’s groundbreaking sci-fi movies, ends next Sunday. Ahead of the season finale, which will pit the Sisterhood against one very unpredictable villain, HBO and Legendary Television have announced that the series has been renewed for a second season.
Now you can rest assured that not everything will have to be solved next Sunday. Dune: Prophecy started as a high-concept sci-fi TV show that didn't exactly resemble Denis Villeneuve's same-universe movies. However, its very first episode, watched by approximately 15 million viewers, ended on a cliffhanger that let everyone know that the series wasn't going to be a toned-down version of the world Villeneuve has put on screen for a new generation.

Dune: Prophecy is a new sci-fi series on HBO that's so far aired five out of six episodes in its first season. The show has been solid — I've been watching and reviewing it here on WinterIsComing, and despite a few qualms I've overall enjoyed the slow creepy story about court politics, genetic memory, and family trauma. The sets are huge, the special effects terrific, and the performances excellent, especially from the two leads Emily Watson and Olivia Williams, playing sisters Valya and Tula Harkonnen.
All the same, I've been worried the show feels too remote and knotty to attract a big enough audience to make it worth the large budget HBO has obviously expended. But I shouldn't have fretted. HBO announced today they they're renewing Dune: Prophecy for season 2!

Since their early 20s, Emily Watson and Olivia Williams’ careers have run on parallel tracks. Born one year apart, they first got to know each other by pondering their futures together on a patch of grass outside The Black Swan pub in Stratford-upon-Avon. “We met at the Royal Shakespeare Company, in the early ’90s, where we were in different plays in different seasons,” says Williams.
