A great respect to traditions and rituals, makes possible that in Japan there is a “do” (way) for almost everything. Therefore, a few years ago scriptwriter Kundo Koyama of Oscar-winning “Departures” fame, came out with the idea that a “yu-do” (the way of the hot water/bath) would be not only possible but also very believable. From this reflection, the original script of “Yudo: The Way of the Bath” stemmed and developed to the 2023 film directed by Masayuki Suzuki.
Yudo: The Way of the Bath is screening at Five Flavours
After shining briefly as a rising star of the Tokyo scene, architect Shiro Miura (Toma Ikuta) struggles to find his way as a solo professional, and – after his father's passing – decides to go back to his provincial hometown and take hold of the dying family business, the Marukin Hot Springs, a small-town bathhouse (sento) that his father had run until the end of his days.

The 25th edition of the prestigious Udine Far East Film Festival came to an end on Saturday night. After a totally digital edition in 2020, a hybrid edition in 2021, and a “semi-traditional” edition in 2022, this year the Festival has been able to joyfully re-savour its full length, interrupted (not to say broken) by the Covid-19 pandemic, and all the persistent health restrictions. An entirety demonstrated not only by the record numbers of the line-up, but also by the record number of guests of honour (200), finally free to travel and to reach the Udinese red carpet.
Looking already forward to the next edition, let's have a look at the winners of this year.

Just like “Masquerade Hotel”, its prequel, “Masquerade Night” is based on a Keigo Higashino novel and brings together hotelier Naomi Yamagishi and undercover Detective Kosuke Nitta at Hotel Cortesia Tokyo, in an effort to catch a killer.
“Masquerade Night” is screening at Toronto Japanese Film Festival
This time, the case begins with an anonymous letter delivered to the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department, stating that the criminal of a murder case will appear at the countdown party Masquerade Night that will be held at Hotel Cortesia Tokyo. This brings NItta once again working undercover with Yamagishi, with their respective goals, of catching the criminal and meeting all demands of the guests of the hotel, clashing once more, almost constantly. The fact that the hotel is hosting more than 500 guests, most of which will be in costume for the Night, makes things for everyone, even more tedious. Lastly, Yamagishi has one more thing to deal with,...

Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” has been hailed by the Western film industry as a savior of the in-person theatrical experience around the world, but this weekend in China it lost out repeatedly to the local savior of Chinese cinema, Huayi Brothers’ war film “The Eight Hundred.”
The Chinese title bested “Tenet” each day of its three-day debut weekend. Despite already being in its third weekend in theaters, director Guan Hu’s patriotic retelling of a 1937 fight against the Japanese grossed $32.3 million to beat out Nolan’s critically acclaimed thriller, which debuted to just $29.6 million, according to figures that including online ticketing service fees from industry tracker and ticketer Maoyan.
Maoyan is currently projecting a $66.9 million total for “Tenet” in China, which would mean that the film has already earned about half its total box office from the first three days — showing a limited pull among Chinese audiences.

Huayi Brothers’ war epic The Eight Hundred grossed $69m on its second weekend (August 28-30), according to figures from Artisan Gateway, for a cumulative box office of $276.8m after 10 days.

Cinemas in some parts of China have been told that they may now sell up to 50% of their available tickets for each screening and play films over two hours in length without restrictions starting from Aug. 14, local reports and leaked directives show.
Concessions may also now be sold — not to snack on in theaters, but, amusingly, as take-away.
The easing of theater restrictions is a big positive sign for the China box office prospects of Disney’s “Mulan,” which confirmed on Monday it would hit Chinese theaters “soon,” and Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet,” which is set to debut in the country on Sept. 4.
Covid-19 has dealt a blow to the global box office dreams of both films, with Disney choosing to forgo theatrical in most markets and release its live-action remake on its own streaming platform.

The classic whodunit genre is seeing a revival of sorts, with tentpole Hollywood blockbusters like “Murder on the Orient Express” and “Knives Out” leading the way and recently even Netflix jumping on the bandwagon with the Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston starring “Murder Mystery” and the Hindi-language film “Raat Akeli Hai” proving to be hits for the streaming platform. Yet another project in the same genre which saw a fair amount of success was 2019’s “Masquerade Hotel” by Masayuki Suzuki, which is based on a Keigo Higashino book and was produced and released, like many Higashino adaptations, after a long drawn-out bidding battle over the book’s rights.

TOKYO -- Two of Asia's biggest male stars will be shoulder-to-shoulder on the set of Hero now that South Korean star Lee Byung Hun has signed up to appear alongside Takuya Kimura in the theatrical version of the Fuji Televison Network hit.
Hero, produced by Fuji's film arm, grew out of a hugely popular miniseries about an unconventional public prosecutor played by Kimura. The show was a ratings monster, earning a 34.3% audience share when it first aired in 2001. A two-hour special in 2006 was equally well received.
Fuji is clearly attempting to spread the appeal of the title to other Asian nations and has guaranteed impressive sales in South Korea by setting the story in both countries and casting local hero Lee as a public prosecutor in the port city of Pusan.
Filming is currently under way with Masayuki Suzuki at the helm. The title will be released in September.
"Since we were set on shooting part of the film on location in South Korea, we felt it was important that we cast opposite Kimura a South Korean actor with a commanding presence and charisma," a Fuji TV spokesman said.
