A24’s latest dive into horror is making noise again. Bring Her Back, the new film by Danny and Michael Philippou, is racking up praise and climbing Rotten Tomatoes with ease.
The Philippou brothers, known for their surprise hit Talk To Me, in 2023, have followed it up with another unsettling tale, this time centered around Sally Hawkins, who plays a woman caring for two foster kids while being drawn into a disturbing ritual. Alongside her stars a strong cast with the likes of Billy Barratt, Sora Wong, and Jonah Wren Phillips.
Bring Her Back Could Become A24’s Highest-Rated Horror
The movie already holds an impressive 93% on the Tomatometer from 41 reviews. That number might shift with time, but early signs suggest it’ll stay among the strongest showings for A24. If somehow the movie manages to crawl up to...

Bring Her Back unfolds in sun-washed suburbs that feel anything but safe, as two mourning siblings arrive at a foster home where kindness masks darker intent. Danny and Michael Philippou direct this 104-minute Australian horror, starring Sally Hawkins as Laura, Billy Barratt as Andy, Sora Wong as Piper and Jonah Wren Phillips as Oliver. Rated R, the film situates itself in a tradition of “trapped-in-a-house” terror infused with occult hints and visceral body-horror moments.
The Philippous root their story in cultural soil shaped by Australia’s gothic isolation and its emerging place on the global horror map, inviting comparisons to J-horror’s creeping dread and European folk-ritual narratives. Story unfolds as Andy, newly orphaned, vows to protect Piper, whose partial sight is rendered through shifting focus and misted lenses, while Laura’s initial warmth—an echo of Down Under neighborliness—gives way to ritualistic hair-snipping and silent ceremonies around an empty backyard pool.

While the words “trauma” and “grief” are often overused when discussing the horror genre, writer/directors Danny Philippou and Michael Philippou delivered an interesting twist on the concepts with their astounding directorial debut “Talk To Me,” which explored acceptance and obsession in a haunting manner. The brilliance of “Talk To Me” was in its specificity, as the Philippo brothers were able to create a unique vision in which “speaking to the dead” was made into a tangible plot device. “Talk To Me” wasn’t just impressive as a small, independent project that made use of its limited resources; it was also genuinely surprising how graphic, and often cynical the duo allowed themselves to be with a debut feature.
Their follow up film, “Bring Her Back,” is even more disturbing on a visceral level, its ability to unify the original mythology with compelling characterization leaves something to be desired. “Talk To Me...

Danny and Michael Philippou’s sophomore feature is another grief-driven horror that doubles down on the darkness with help from Sally Hawkins and a talented young ensemble.
In Bring Her Back, Billy Barratt and Sora Wong play Andy and Piper, two siblings who are sent to live with a seemingly warm foster mother, Laura (Hawkins), after coming home from school to discover their father’s dead body. Also mourning the death of her own daughter, Laura begins exhibiting disturbing behavior in her treatment of Andy and her other mute foster child Oliver (Jonah Wren Phillips), of which the partially-sighted Piper is blissfully ignorant.
While the Australian director brothers’ 2022 debut Talk to Me proved a youthful horror hit in its own right, their followup explores some of the same themes of grief and trauma through a much darker, more personal narrative that leaves viewers with a sense of both dread and hope.

In Talk to Me, Danny and Michael Philippou proved their potential. In Bring Her Back, they cement signatures littered with black clouds, broken hearts, and unrelenting bleakness. Not quite a shock considering Talk to Me’s emotional shackles, but Bring Her Back doubles down on festering misery. The problem is, Talk to Me abides by structured rules, whereas Bring Her Back languishes in ambiguity. The Philippous show instead of tell, which strips away narrative cohesiveness. Creepy and squirm-in-your-seat in spades, but also scattered and lost in translation between sadness and screams.
Danny and co-writer Bill Hinzman tear families to shreds and stitch the survivors together in Bring Her Back. Sight-impaired Piper (Sora Wong) and her older, protective brother Andy (Billy Barratt) enter the foster system after their father’s untimely demise. New mother Laura (Sally Hawkins), a child-care worker and counselor, seems splendid—but something’s off about Oliver (Jonah Wren Phillips...

Hey, remember one review ago when I said death sucks? Grief makes it worse.
Danny and Michael Philippou’s sophomore feature, “Bring Her Back,” is their second film about the misery and danger that comes from never letting go of the dead. Their first, “Talk to Me,” was an alarmingly assured debut, a truly frightening tale about a mourning teenager who abuses a mysterious relic to reach out to her dead mother. “Bring Her Back” is a film about a mother with her own grotesque method of dealing with the death of her daughter. They are similar films. They are not the same.

The grief coursing through Bring Her Back presents itself with a forceful bluntness. At the start of this haunting second feature from the Australian directing duo Danny and Michael Philippou, Andy (Billy Barratt) and his sister Piper (Sora Wong) find their father (Stephen Phillips) lying on the bathroom floor. His corpse, bloodied from a fall and slick with water from the still-running shower, sears itself into their minds. And his death, as sudden as it is agonizing, sets off a series of ominous events.
In their debut Talk to Me, the Philippou brothers viscerally translated the emotional experience of cavorting with the spectral. They presented communing with the spirit world as an addictive high, and sharply rendered the pitfalls of adolescent ennui through bored teens testing the limits of a possessed totem. The longer the characters in Talk to Me spent with the cursed sculpture of a hand, the more...

Grief consumes directors Danny and Michael Philippou‘s follow-up feature, Bring Her Back. It fuels everything. The kind of primal, all-consuming agony that functions like a black hole, pulling everything nearby into its gravity and extinguishing light. The Philippous’ brand of grief horror is as visceral and brutal as you’d expect based on their feature debut Talk to Me, but without any of the vibrancy or hope. Instead, Bring Her Back operates on an unwavering and palpable feeling of dread and anguish from start to end.
The only truly carefree moment at all in the Philippous’ bleak sophomore effort comes with the opening scene that introduces protective older brother Andy (Billy Barratt) as he picks up his sister Piper (Sora Wong), who is blind, from the bus stop, mere moments after she tries and fails to make new friends. The tender moment between tight-knit siblings comes screeching to a...

The feel-bad movie of the year, "Bring Her Back" is so unapologetically disturbing that I wonder how a more casual moviegoer might react to it ... if they're brave enough to see it at all. The latest bit of venom from twin Australian filmmakers Danny and Michael Philippou feels like the complete opposite of their breakout hit "Talk To Me." When I reviewed that film at Sundance, I commented that the vibes it was throwing off reminded me of the early work of Sam Raimi. It clearly had more of a budget than Raimi's iconic "The Evil Dead," but it featured a similar spook-a-blast tone. In other words, "Talk To Me" was fun even when it was being scary. There's no fun to be had with "Bring Her Back." While there are a handful of moments that might result in intentional laughs (the Philippous clearly have a twisted sense of...

Horror movies explicitly tackling grief are hardly a recent development, but it’s difficult to argue against the fact that we’ve seen this theme exploited at an increased output to less-satisfying results in the previous decade, adding unnecessary weight to even the sleaziest of slashers. I highly suspect twin brothers Danny and Michael Philippou––the YouTubers-turned-cinematic sensations behind 2023’s excellent supernatural shocker Talk to Me––share those exact same reservations about the lazy utilizations of a universally relatable theme that have made their way into multiplexes on a near-weekly basis. Initially appearing to operate in the same realm of dark mysticism as their debut, the wildly ambitious sophomore effort Bring Her Back gradually reveals itself to be a direct statement on the cheap exploitation of grief, channeling the existential nihilism of French New Extremity works like Martyrs to explore just how unhealthy it is to process death at such a surface level.

Throughout “Bring Her Back,” foster mother Laura (Sally Hawkins) provides something like an impromptu version of descriptive audio to her nearsighted teenage ward Piper (Sora Wong). For a film devoted to rendering vision impairment with dignity by casting a young actress with the condition, these moments are a powerful nod to the importance of accessibility. They’re also a neat metaphor for a film that never transcends its own neat metaphor.

‘Bring Her Back’ Review: Sally Hawkins Is Psychotically Good in Yet Another Horror Movie About Grief

Australian filmmakers Danny and Michael Philippou solidified A24’s signature horror reign with 2022’s twisted and evil-spirits-summoning “Talk to Me,” about a party game gone horrifyingly awry for a group of teen friends. They’ve upped the stakes with a more gruesomely disturbing but seriously, conceptually half-baked new thriller, “Bring Her Back,” in which Sally Hawkins is psychotically good and in an unhinged, manically grieving form we’ve never seen her in.
The British “Happy-Go-Lucky” and “Shape of Water” actress ever brings a touch of whimsy or furtive sadness to her roles, often as a woman with a secret. In “Bring Her Back,” her secrets are overwhelming every cell in her being as a foster mom, Laura, who is seriously unwell and taking desperate measures to resurrect the spirit of her own biological dead daughter — and in the flesh of one of the two foster children she’s inherited. Despite Hawkins’ commitment to the bit,...

Before YouTubers Danny and Michael Philippou’s (aka RackaRacka) feature directorial debut, Talk to Me, blew up at Sundance, this writer was an early detractor. Our review called it “very solidly-crafted… [but] simply boring.” However, we argued it had mainstream breakout potential, and we were right, as it was a massive financial success for indie studio A24. We also ended the review on a very particular note:
“The strong concept and polished execution are good enough to make whatever the Philippou brothers make next into an exciting prospect, even if their debut isn’t all there.”
Reader, we were absolutely right about that too, as their sophomore feature, Bring Her Back, is the most unsettling thing we have seen this year.

So much of modern horror is entwined with the twin serpents of grief and trauma, but the way filmmakers rely on distancing effects or project a tone of ironic detachment onto their characters often prevents the horrors at the center of their works from truly resonating. That detachment, not to mention the propensity for metaphor, endemic to the works of so many of horror’s most promising luminaries in recent years can be probing and evocative, but really it exists to allow audience to look at tragedy from a safe vantage point.
With Danny and Michael Philippou, however, you’re in the bleeding thick of it. That was as true of Talk to Me, the Australian twin filmmakers’ feature directorial debut, as it is of their follow-up, Bring Her Back, an unreservedly soul-sick portrait of grief that comes from a place of such inflamed, naked vulnerability that it becomes almost unbearable to sit with.

One of the big horror releases ahead of the official start of summer is A24’s Bring Her Back, the second movie from Talk to Me directing duo Danny and Michael Philippou.
Two-time Academy Award nominee Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water) stars in Bring Her Back, and a second official trailer has been released by A24 today. Watch it below.
This trailer features some bits of new footage from the film but mostly hypes up the positive reviews Bring Her Back has received in the wake of a recent screening for critics. “It follows you home,” Fangoria raves. Cinema Blend calls the film “deeply shocking,” while Discussing Film says that it delivers “gnarly, genuine terror.” All seem to agree that it’s a total “must see.”

Michael and Danny Philippou have an unusual and refreshing take on the horror genre. In their feature film directorial debut, Talk to Me, they proved that emotional stakes bring something special to scares. The two have taken that aesthetic with their latest, Bring Her Back. And, the other night, I got to see it for myself! To note, I sat in the very front row of the damn theatre in a packed house – a seat that can easily ruin a good movie – and it was mesmerizing. You can look out for a full JoBlo review later in the month, but there is much to love in this creepy examination of loss, which also just got a special Mother’s Day spot you can check out above!
After the screening, the audience tuned in for a live stream interview with Michael and Danny, and their enthusiasm for what we had just witnessed was invigorating.

With their 2022 debut feature and horror phenomenon Talk To Me, filmmakers Danny and Michael Philippou established themselves as some of the most exciting new voices in genre filmmaking. Where that movie, in which teenagers chase the high of conjuring spirits to possess them at house parties, was partly inspired by the recklessness they’d experienced as high school students, it was grounded, and elevated, by a very real sense of consequences.
Now, two years after their breakout film, the Philippou’s follow-up is Bring Her Back, returning the writing-directing duo to an excavation of the horrors of suburban family life that is heightened by the deepest emotional shocks and gnarliest gore of any genre film in recent memory. A brother and sister uncover a terrifying ritual at the secluded home of their new foster mother.

The sinister hand, outstretched and wanting, from Danny and Michael Philippou’s Talk to Me in 2022 feels perfectly symbolic of how their fans have felt in those two years waiting for the filmmakers' next release. Bring Her Backhas been described by the gruesome twosome as a “spiritual successor” to that film, also about grief, albeit in a different, darker way.
Last night across the country, audiences were treated to a sneak preview of the film ahead of its May 30, 2025 release, along with a Q&a from the brothers. The film centers on siblings Andy (Billy Barratt) and Piper. They are forced to enter into the foster care system, and discover that their foster mother (Academy Award nominee Sally Hawkins) is definitely up to something at her secluded home in the woods.
Bring Her Back was written in tandem with Talk To Me, and coincided with a real-life loss their family was going through.

One of the biggest surprises in the world of horror in recent years was 2023's "Talk to Me." Hailing from A24, the acclaimed film served as the feature directorial debut of Danny and Michael Philippou, transitioning them from YouTube stars to A-list filmmakers. For their follow-up, the Philippou brothers have re-teamed with A24 for another wild horror ride in the form of "Bring Her Back." While it's still relatively early in the year, it's safe to say it features one of the best performances we're likely to find in the world of genre filmmaking in 2025, and it comes from an unexpected actress.
Sally Hawkins, a two-time Oscar nominee, leads the cast of "Bring Her Back" as Laura. While Hawkins is known best for her work in movies like "Paddington" and the Best Picture winner "The Shape of Water," this is Hawkins in a straight-up, uncompromising horror picture. Hawkins doesn't flinch and,...

Danny and Michael Philippou's Aussie supernatural shocker Talk To Me went on to earn $92 million worldwide and emerged as A24’s third-highest-grossing release of all time. The popular indie banner will be hoping to replicate the film's success with the siblings’ sophomore feature, and based on these first reactions, Bring Her Back is shaping up to be just as big a hit with horror hounds.
Though there are a couple of negative-leaning posts, the majority of critics who were invited to see the movie early were very impressed - although Bring Her Back does not sound like an easy watch (we'd expect nothing less).
The official synopsis doesn't tell us very much: “A brother and sister uncover a terrifying ritual at the secluded home of their new foster mother.”
Said brother and sister are played by Billy Barratt and Sora Wong, with the great Sally Hawkins playing against type as the foster mother.

Following the success of their feature debut, the horror film Talk to Me, the directing duo of Danny and Michael Philippou signed on to make a new film adaptation of the Street Fighter video game franchise, started developing a Talk to Me sequel titled Talk 2 Me, and let it be known that they had already shot some sort of Talk to Me prequel (but it’s not clear if or when we’ll get to see that footage), had an action drama project they’d like to make, and also had a horror script called Bring Her Back that they wanted to get into production. They were so dedicated to getting Bring Her Back made that they dropped Street Fighter in favor of their horror movie, which wrapped after 41 days of filming back at the start of August. The film is now heading toward a May 30 theatrical release date,...

It looks like Danny and Michael Philippou won't be experiencing the sophomore slump. The brothers made their feature directorial debut with the supernatural horror film Talk to Me, which was well-received by critics and became A24's highest-grossing horror film. With a debut like that, all eyes are on what they'll do next, and audiences will get to see just that later this month with their upcoming release, Bring Her Back. The film had its first screening last night and, with the social media embargo lifted, it looks like the Philippou brothers are onto another horror movie hit.
The early reactions to Bring Her Back have been universally positive, with most of the first responses calling it "dread-inducing" and a "bleak exploration of grief." It’s that time of the year when studios release their big Summer blockbusters, hoping to rake in the dough. But with large tentpole releases struggling, there seems to be a shift in the kinds of films we’re getting. Sure, we’re still getting our usual slew of Superhero fare, but the horror genre has never looked better. Horror has been such a proven commodity that it feels like we have more summer horror releases than ever before. And I can’t blame studios as horror has been a consistent moneymaker, usually for pretty cheap. So let’s parse through all the releases, and see which are worth a trip to the theater for. And a recent trailer may have dropped one off this list. Proving that not all trailers help build anticipation: some kill it completely.
Now let’s get into our 10 most anticipated horror movies of Summer...

Directors Danny and Michael Philippou are ready for the release of their next film, Bring Her Back, the horror movie that will see the siblings attempt to achieve the success they had with their 2022 debut, Talk to Me. Not much is known about the movie, aside from a few plot details, but now A24 has let the Philippous share their description of the movie: "Harrowing, traumatic and fun." Consider us officially excited about the movie opening nationwide on May 30.
Bring Her Back was written by Danny Philippou and Bill Hinzman and directed by Danny and Michael Philippou. The same formula for Talk to Me is completed with producers Samantha Jennings and Kristina Ceyton and, of course, backing studio A24. Filmmaker Danny Philippou describes Bring Her Back, which is not a sequel to Talk to Me, as harrowing, traumatic, and fun. A24’s latest look at the much-anticipated new original horror film from Danny and Michael Philippou is creepy and weird, and Michael promises it’s more psychological than Talk to Me.
Sally Hawkins (Wonka) stars along with Billy Barratt (Invasion), Sora Wong, Jonah Wren Phillips (Sweet Tooth), and Sally-Anne Upton (Neighbours). The cast also includes Stephen Phillips (Apple Cider Vinegar) and Mischa Heywood (The Wonder Gang).
“A brother and sister uncover a terrifying ritual at the secluded home of their new foster mother,” reads A24’s cryptic description. The Philippous write and direct, with Samantha Jennings and Kristina Ceyton serving as producers.
Bring Her Back will open in theaters on May 30, 2025.
