Guillermo del Toro joins the ranks of episodic genre anthology curators like Alfred Hitchcock and Rod Serling with his “Cabinet of Curiosities.” Del Toro assembles a Murderers’ Row of horror filmmakers for his limited anthology series, each story contained within his ornate oddities cabinet. That singular, eponymous item doesn’t just anchor the anthology but serves as a visual representation of the type of vintage scary story collection that “Cabinet of Curiosities” unfurls.
Del Toro introduces each selected tale like a sophisticated carnival barker. A short monologue ensues as the genre maestro opens his cabinet and plucks out a representative item for each curated story along with a carved figurine of its director. Series creator and executive producer del Toro hand selected each story and director, uniting their distinct visions through a recurring theme of hidden, shifting realities. The episodes range from the macabre to classic frights to the fantastical,...

Firestarter doesn’t exactly have a legacy to uphold. Stephen King’s 1980 novel is not considered one of his signature works. Derivative of Carrie (1974), but without its emotional depth and horror, the novel is a pulpy and fitfully entertaining mess. But its pyrokinetic heroine and the suspenseful chase structure could lend themselves to a gripping film adaptation. And maybe one day, they will.
The latest adaptation of Firestarter, however, isn’t it. Both an adaptation of the novel and a remake of the largely derided 1984 film, the movie is a disappointing endeavor hampered by a weak script, lifeless acting, and unconvincing special effects. A few atmospheric and technical flourishes keep it from being a total dumpster fire, but the spark just isn’t there.
The film starts with an intriguing credits sequence, observing young Andy McGee (Zac Efron) and his wife, Vicky (Sydney Lemmon), as they volunteer for a medical...

Well, Falling Skies has launched, and the debut ratings were impressive. If you're like me, you took a shine to the character John Pope, and there is a lot of him coming up in the show, and with some interesting spins. Pope is played by Colin Cunningham, and I got a chance to talk to him recently about the show, shows generally, and his character. It was a great conversation, and I hope that translates (it usually doesn't quite work). For my money, a lot of the best hope of the continued success of the show comes down to how Pope figures into things, and I think Colin gives a fun, interesting, and layered performance that is worth watching.
Just because the show is so new, I'm going to include the official rundown on both the character and Cunningham before jumping right into the interview. Have fun.

Hilary Swank plays the legendary aviator Amelia Earhart in Amelia. And although, as I said in my review, the movie is earthbound, the choice of Swank in the title role demonstrates sky-clear thinking. (Okay, that's enough of the windblown aeronautical metaphors.) Physically, the two are twins, and not just because Swank has been coiffed in Earhart's striking, trademark, short-haired tousle, a variation on Winnie the Pooh's Christopher Robin. Rather, both women project a seductive androgyny-a boyishness that nevertheless leaves no doubt about the sexuality of the woman wearing the trousers. True, Swank first found fame as a girl living as...
