Shailene Woodley (“Big Little Lies”) is set to headline “A Beautiful Journey,” an English-language comedy-drama feature from French writer-director Nathalie Marchak (“Out of Instinct”).

“A Beautiful Journey” is being produced by Anonymous Federation, a joint venture between Anonymous Content and Federation Studios, and Gabman, the company founded by Valerie Garcia, who previously co-headed one of France’s leading distribution shingles, Mars Films.

Rosalie Cimino, a former top agent at Paris-based firm Ubba, will produce on behalf of Anonymous Federation, while Garcia will produce on behalf of Gabman. Principal photography will begin in the fall.

Woodley will play Mary, an ex-swimming champion who now works as a mermaid at the New York Aquarium, struggling to raise her 7-year-old son, Lulu, on her own. When they get evicted, to protect him, she pretends they are about to embark on a beautiful journey. But in doing so, she’s beginning to lose — and eventually find — herself.

"There were many people that wanted to adapt the book," says Three Women showrunner Laura Eason, who collaborated closely with the novel's author, Lisa Taddeo, to bring the 2019 bestseller to the screen. "When they put a list of possible showrunners together, I luckily was on the shortlist. When Lisa and I met, we just clicked and luckily she chose me to be her partner. I came to that meeting having read the book, already being obsessed with it, and when I got the call I felt so fortunate to get that opportunity."

Will Ferrell and Jessica Elbaum are set to produce the feature adaptation of the play under their Gloria Sanchez Productions banner. Headland is set to adapt the screenplay and direct.

The play, which ran on Broadway from November 2024 through January 2025, focuses on the “complex sin of pride” as a family returns to their parents house for Christmas. The production, which was well-reviewed by critics, ran at the Second Stage’s Hayes Theater, with a cast including Shailene Woodley, Zachary Quinto and Barbie Ferreira. Casting for the film will be announced at a later date.

Ferrell and Elbaum previously produced Headland’s Bachelorette, starring Kirsten Dunst, Isla Fisher, Lizzy Caplan, and her film, Sleeping with Other People, starring Jason Sudeikis and Alison Brie. Headland was also the creator and showrunner on the Disney+ Star Wars series The Acolyte.

I Will Find You, Netflix’s upcoming Harlan Coben limited series, has expanded its cast: Britt Lower (Severance) and Milo Ventimiglia (This Is Us) have officially joined the forthcoming prison break thriller, TVLine has learned.
