John Wick's 'Gun-Fu' Action Style Was Originally Designed For A Jason Statham Movie [Exclusive]
Image
When "John Wick" blasted into theaters on October 24, 2014, moviegoers lost their minds over the film's inventive amalgam of hand-to-hand combat and gunplay. It was doubly impressive due to Keanu Reeves' seemingly effortless facility for performing many of his own stunts. Obviously, no one was surprised that the star of "The Matrix" franchise could brawl and shoot convincingly, but the degree of difficulty appeared to be off the charts. Just when you think you've seen every possible iteration of martial arts combat on screen, along comes stuntman-turned-director Chad Stahelski to show action junkies that there's still plenty of room for throwdown innovation.

If you're a hardcore fan of the genre, you know that filmmakers have blended these gunplay and hand-to-hand combat before. The Wachowskis first introduced the idea in "The Matrix," which inspired Kurt Wimmer to go utterly gonzo by inventing "gun kata" in his ludicrously entertaining "Equilibrium." Wimmer was so...

Jason Statham at an event for The Beekeeper (2024)
“I’ll bee back,” may have been uttered in the Amazon MGM corridors of power, as it snaps up The Beekeeper 2 with Jason Statham.

If you know, you know. And those of you that saw last year’s The Beekeeper at the cinema didn’t just help the film to buzz well past $150m at the global box office, you also know just what a delirious cinematic experience it was.

There was so much to enjoy about the film, so news that a sequel was on the way was welcome indeed.

The first film rolled back the years for the mighty Jason Statham, capturing a vintage performance which drove a highly watchable action flick.

Back in February we learned that a sequel was on the way. David Ayer has vacated the director’s chair in favour of fresh pastures, but Kurt Wimmer is back writing the script. Timo Tjahjanto,...

Jason Statham Sequel 'The Beekeeper 2' Acquired by Amazon MGM Studios
Image
The Beekeeper 2 is moving forward quickly, as the highly-anticipated sequel has now secured a theatrical distributor and an impending production start. Starring Jason Statham in the title role, The Beekeeper was a revenge thriller released in 2024 that quickly became one of the actor's highest-grossing solo action films. The Stath will return as the nation's lethal protector in a fast-moving sequel that has Amazon buzzing with excitement (and money).

According to Deadline, Amazon MGM Studios has officially acquired the worldwide distribution rights to The Beekeeper 2 in a hefty deal worth more than $50 million. The sequel will begin production this fall, which will be directed by Timo Tjahjanto (Nobody 2), who is taking over the reins after David Ayer helmed the first installment. Kurt Wimmer will return to write the screenplay for the upcoming sequel. Amazon MGM distributed The Beekeeper in 2024 to box office success, grossing $162 million worldwide on a $40 million budget.

Jason Statham’s The Beekeeper 2’ Gets a Buzzy Production Update
Image
The hive is active again. The Beekeeper 2, the high-octane sequel to this year’s surprise action hit, has officially landed a massive worldwide distribution deal with Amazon MGM Studios. Sources peg the deal at comfortably north of $50 million, showing the faith the studio has in turning this into a legitimate franchise, according to a report by Variety. Jason Statham will reprise his role as Adam Clay, the former black-ops agent turned bee-loving vigilante, with production on the sequel slated to begin this fall.

This time, the action will be directed by Timo Tjahjanto, the acclaimed filmmaker behind The Night Comes for Us and the upcoming Nobody 2, working from a screenplay by returning scribe Kurt Wimmer. The project is being produced by Miramax, which also handled the original, and negotiated the deal directly with Amazon. The original Beekeeper, directed by David Ayer, saw Statham's Clay embark on a ruthless...

The new buzz says Amazon MGM secured the worldwide distribution rights to The Beekeeper 2
Bob Odenkirk
Fresh off of directing the Bob Odenkirk action sequel Nobody 2 (which is now in post-production) for Universal, Timo Tjahjanto has signed on to direct the Jason Statham action sequel The Beekeeper 2. Filming on the Statham movie is expected to begin this fall. It was previously reported that the movie will, again, be made under the new Weinstein-less Miramax label, but Deadline now reveals that Amazon MGM has just secured the rights to distribute the sequel worldwide. Their sources say this new deal has cost somewhere above the realm of $50 million.

Directed by David Ayer from a screenplay written by Kurt Wimmer, The Beekeeper was an incredibly wild action flick that showed us what happens when one man’s brutal campaign for vengeance takes on national stakes after he is revealed to be a former operative of a powerful and clandestine organization known as “Beekeepers.” Statham played a character named Adam Clay,...

Jason Statham's Sequel to 2024 Hit Action Film Gets New Exciting Update
Image
Jason Statham is a prolific and profitable action star whose films bring millions of dollars at the box office. In 2024, the actor teamed up with Suicide Squad director for The Beekeeper.

The action movie was a critical and commercial success, which led to them reuniting this year for A Working Man. However, considering how profitable The Beekeeper was, a sequel was granted. Now, Deadline reports that The Beekeeper 2 has received a major update as Amazon MGM Studios landed the worldwide distribution rights in a $50 million+ deal.

The move is hardly surprising, as the first entry in the franchise was also distributed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures through Amazon MGM Studios, with Miramax producing. The same team will produce and distribute the sequel as well, but The Beekeeper comes with a big change: David Ayer won't return to direct.

Instead, Jason Statham will team up with Nobody 2 director Timo Tjahjanto. Ayer's...

Jason Statham's 71% Rotten Tomatoes Revenge Romp Is Buzzing Around Another Streaming Top 10
Image
Jason Statham’s buzzworthy action flick The Beekeeper is officially swarming streaming charts once again, this time landing at #6 on MGM+ — and proving that when it comes to punching scammers and delivering bee puns with a straight face, no one does it better than Statham. After dominating theaters at the beginning of last year with an impressive $152.7 million global box office haul, The Beekeeper quietly became one of the most-watched films on Prime Video in 2024 and is now making major moves on MGM+ as well. Not bad for a movie that many dismissed as another mid-budget revenge thriller — and one that now sits at a strong 71% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Directed by Fury’s David Ayer and written by Equilibrium’s Kurt Wimmer, The Beekeeper stars Statham as Adam Clay, a former elite operative of a mysterious organization known only as the Beekeepers. What starts as a story about a mild-mannered...

Jason Statham Will Be Back In The Beekeeper 2 — Timo Tjahjanto To Direct
Image
Spoiler Alert: Don't get stung — this article contains signposted spoilers for The Beekeeper.

Some buzzy news for your Friday morning! Following the global box office success of last year's David Ayer and Jason Statham action thriller The Beekeeper, The Stath's assassin-turned-apiarist-turned-assassin-again Adam Clay is set to make a busy (probably murderous) bee of himself once again in Miramax's The Beekeeper 2. And what's more, per Deadline's reporting, Indonesian action filmmaker Timo Tjahjanto is making a beeline for the director's hotseat and will be the man calling the shots on the upcoming sequel.

We know vanishingly little about what The Beekeeper 2, penned by the first movie's scribe Kurt Wimmer, will entail at this point, but we do know that cameras are due to start rolling on the sequel — which is sure to have a, er, sting in its tale — before the year is through. And while Ayer won't be at the helm for the follow-up,...

One Of Jason Statham's Best Action Movies Is Getting A Sequel
Image
Buzz buzz: Our prayers have been answered, because the only two movies that actually deserve to become franchises are now getting sequels. First there was the announcement last year that Russell Crowe would return to ride his little scooter in a sequel to "The Pope's Exorcist," and now, Jason Statham is getting the beehive back together in a sequel to his best action movie in years.

That's right, "The Beekeeper" will ride again, with Deadline reporting that Statham is returning to star in a sequel to his only 2024 action film, which was a box office and streaming hit. Not only that, but "The Beekeeper 2" will be directed by none other than Indonesian director and guys-beating-the-everloving-gory-s***-out-of-each-other enthusiast Timo Tjahjanto.

The original "The Beekeeper" was directed by David Ayer and starred Statham as an ordinary beekeeper who is also a former assassin who worked for a secret organization known as The Beekeepers.

Jason Statham Will Return for The Beekeeper 2 (But With 1 Big Change)
Image
The Beekeeper 2 with Jason Statham is in the works at Miramax. Unfortunately, one member of the original movie's creative team will not be returning (at least in the same role) for the action sequel.

According to Deadline, David Ayer will not be returning as director for The Beekeeper 2, with Nobody 2 helmer Timo Tjahjanto tapped as his replacement. Ayer is currently busy filming the Brad Pitt-led movie The Heart of the Beast for Paramount. However, Miramax is hoping that Ayer will join the sequel in a producing capacity. Kurt Wimmer returned to write the screenplay for The Beekeeper 2, which is slated to begin production this fall. Amazon MGM Studios is expected to secure the sequel's domestic rights. The company previously handled distribution on the 2024 original.

'The Beekeeper 2' Is Happening With Jason Statham Set To Return
Image
Jason Statham kicking serious butt in movies is like a cozy warm blanket and the best kind of comfort food. You know exactly what you're getting and that's exactly why you're seated and prepared for a good time. The reliable action star rarely disappoints, and he certainly didn't with 2024's The Beekeeper, a January release that defied expectations and became a hit. Well folks, if you wanted more of Statham's Adam Clay human intelligence operative, the next bit of news should have you buzzing.

Per Deadline, Statham is officially returning for The Beekeeper 2 and cameras are set to roll beginning this fall. There are going to be some changes behind the scenes, however. Jason Statham at an event for The Beekeeper (2024)
Insects are set to be that bit safer, as Jason Statham is returning for The Beekeeper 2. Filming will get underway this year.

Comfortably one of the most entertaining films of 2024, and a surprise box office hit too, was The Beekeeper. Starring Jason ‘The’ Statham and directed by David Ayer – the duo have reunited for the incoming A Working Man, we wrote about The Beekeeper quite a lot, and it’s little secret that there was scope for further adventures. Bees need constant maintenance after all.

Good news, then. The Statham has signed on the dotted line to return for The Beekeeper 2, which is now official. He’s also going to be one of the producers of the movie as well, and presumably will be in charge of honey supplies.

Kurt Wimmer is back writing the script as well, but there is a change in personnel involved. David Ayer isn’t directing,...

Fresh off of directing the Bob Odenkirk action sequel Nobody 2 (which is now in post-production) for Universal, Timo Tjahjanto has signed on to direct the Jason Statham action sequel The Beekeeper 2 for Miramax! Deadline reports that filming on the Statham movie is expected to begin this fall.

Directed by David Ayer from a screenplay written by Kurt Wimmer, The Beekeeper was a surprisingly good action flick that showed us what happens when one man’s brutal campaign for vengeance takes on national stakes after he is revealed to be a former operative of a powerful and clandestine organization known as “Beekeepers.” As Deadline reminds us, it was about Adam Clay, a retired clandestine human intelligence operative who sets out for revenge after his kind-hearted landlady becomes the victim of a phishing scam that steals millions of dollars from a charity she runs. Jason Statham Returning for ‘The Beekeeper 2’
Image
The buzz continues for the beekeeper — with Jason Statham returning to star in “The Beekeeper 2.”

The Miramax movie is set to start production in the fall, with “Nobody 2” director Timo Tjahjanto taking the reins from David Ayer, who helmed the first kooky conspiracy thriller, which debuted last January and grossed $152 million worldwide.

Statham stars as Adam Clay, a retired government assassin (a former “Beekeeper” operative turned actual honeycomb minder) who gets back in the game after a phishing attack targets the kindly old woman (Phylicia Rashad) from whom he rents a barn, stealing millions of dollars from a charity she runs. As Clay goes berserker mode in his quest for vengeance, the film turns into the kind of actioner audiences expect from Statham — with his gruff, baldheaded vigilante leaving a bloody trail in his wake, but ultimately beating the bad guys.

In his review, Variety’s Peter Debruge described...

The studio and filmmakers are looking to bring Ayer back in a producing capacity to the sequel. Ayer is currently in production on the Brad Pitt Paramount movie The Heart of the Beast.

'Ultraviolet' Brings Vampire Action to Streaming on Hulu This February
Image
Milla Jovovich did not shower herself in glory with the sci-fi action blockbuster Ultraviolet, but fans can get reacquainted with the box office bomb as it lands on Hulu. Released in 2006, the film has been mostly lost to time, and maybe that is where it should stay in the eyes of many critics and audiences. However, every movie has the chance to discover a new audience when it arrives on a new streaming home, and this could be Ultraviolet’s chance to shine.

Directed by Kurt Wimmer, Jovovich stars as Violet Song, a woman infected with a vampire-like disease called hemoglophagia, which in the dystopian setting of the movie is a death sentence for anyone who contracts it. Violent embarks on a brutal and dangerous mission to take down the government, with the help of a small group of rebels and a young boy who seems to have the cure...

Sphere (1998) – Wtf Happened to This Adaptation?
Image
You guys really seem to be digging on Michael Crichton huh? Well let’s look at what almost stopped his adaptations from happening. After a heck of a run from his adaptations both good and mediocre, Sphere would be a big enough bomb that it would follow with two straight sub-par adaptations before a quiet death of his worked being put on the big screen. The movie should have been a no doubt success with stars like Dustin Hoffman, Sam Jackson, Sharon Stone and a more than capable, Oscar winning, director in Barry Levinson. What we would end up with is one of the biggest bombs of the late 90s and a movie that is derided or outright forgotten from the annals of 90s cinema. Was it the cast, the story, or the general public being over Chricton things that didn’t have dinosaurs in it that was the culprit.

‘The Beekeeper’ Review #2
Image
Stars: Jason Statham, Phylicia Rashad, Josh Hutcherson, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Jemma Redgrave, Minnie Driver, Jeremy Irons | Written by Kurt Wimmer | Directed by David Ayer

Discounting the Fast and the Furious franchise, I really enjoy Jason Statham’s films. He has an incredible talent for playing the most ridiculous situations straight, with his deadpan, growling voice. The mix of him being serious plus utterly silly situations makes for extremely fun films (albeit The Meg was a disappointment).

He is also brilliant at the physical aspect of the films. I am sure he has stuntmen, but along with Keanu Reeves, he is one of my favourite action stars working today. He has cornered a market, that other actors might turn their nose up at, or most likely you would get the impression they were “in on the joke”. Statham does not do this, and it is to his great credit.

Surely Statham would...

This Forgotten '60s Surrealist Movie Is a Trippy Nightmare That Takes Kid Horror to a Whole New Level
Image
Children have long been a staple of horror. Sometimes, children are the source of terror, like in Fritz Kiersch’s and Kurt Wimmer’s Children of the Corn adaptions. What we don't often see is horror from a child’s point of view. Children's naïve logic can often lend to a sense of unreality, while their vulnerable position is ideal for maximizing dread in the audience. The iconic Noriaki Yuasa took being trapped inside a child’s perspective to its most extreme with his 1968 The Snake Girl and The Silver-Haired Witch. Through surrealist imagery, Yuasa invokes a hallucinatory effect that perfectly mimics a child’s nightmare.

Wtf Happened to Equilibrium?
Image
Putting a dystopian future on the big screen was nothing new in the early 2000s, especially when set in the realm of science-fiction. But making it work also within the action genre is a monumental ask. Really, how often did an all-out action flick want to make its viewers think…especially when the plot revolves around thinking be illegal.

But Kurt Wimmer gave it a go with Equilibrium, which wondered what the world might look like under a totalitarian rule…if there was a lot of gunplay involved. Brushed aside by the studio, critics and moviegoers, Equilibrium has gone on to become a minor cult favorite (including here on JoBlo), something Wimmer could have never seen coming…Just don’t go comparing it to The Matrix in front of him…

So, take off your thinking cap and load up your pistols as we find out: Wtf Happened to This Movie?...

Jason Statham & 'The Beekeeper' Director Reunite in First Trailer for 2025 Action Thriller 'A Working Man'
Image
You’ll wish he was a cop. Action movie icon Jason Statham takes the fight to human traffickers in the fist-throwing, one-liner delivering first trailer for this year’s A Working Man. Formerly titled Levon’s Trade, A Working Man finds The Stath on delightfully familiar ground as a former Royal Marine-turned-construction worker who, you guessed it, will call upon his particular set of skills once again when his boss and friend’s teenage daughter is suddenly kidnapped. It's no exaggeration to say that A Working Man looks like everything you could want from a Jason Statham movie, and you can see for yourself by checking out the trailer below.

Directed by The Beekeeper’s David Ayer, and with a script from Statham’s Expendables co-star Sylvester Stallone, A Working Man also stars an almost unrecognizable David Harbour (Stranger Things), as well as Michael Peña (End of Watch), Jason Flemyng, Arianna Rivas...

10 Remakes Of 1990s Movies That Couldn't Replicate Their Success
Image
Over the last decade or two, one particular trend in Hollywood has left moviegoers divided. This specific trend involves major studios electing to remake their fan-favorite films from years before. Some enjoy seeing their favorite stories be brought back to life, while others would prefer to see studios dedicating their resources to more original ideas. Regardless of where you stand on this debate, it is impossible to deny that the movie world has recently been flooded with remakes of popular films.

A major reason why so many of these remakes are happening is because they often feel like a surefire way to make a massive profit by capitalizing on a pre-existing audience. However, several recent attempts have demonstrated that success is not a guarantee. Some remakes unfortunately end up thoroughly underwhelming their audiences, failing to offer all the exciting elements that made the original films so popular, particularly when it...

The Wild, Trashy 2000s Crime Thriller Frank Darabont Was Supposed To Direct
Image
Frank Darabont is credited for directing three of the very best Stephen King adaptations, but between 1994's "The Shawshank Redemption" and 2007's "The Mist," the pulp maestro has rarely had an easy go of it.

If you're wondering what could be so awful about making a movie that constantly flickers around the top spot on the IMDb's ranking of the all-time greatest films, you need to remember that "The Shawshank Redemption" wasn't a runaway success when it hit theaters in the late summer of 1994. Based on a novella from King's celebrated "Different Seasons" collection, the film couldn't be sold as a tale from the "King of Horror," nor could it rely on star power given that Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman were typically viewed as ensemble actors. Its main selling point would be the reviews, and, well, critics didn't initially deliver a chorus of raves.

Things didn't really turn...

Point Break's 2015 Remake Will be Streaming on Netflix from October 1
Image
October will see the 2015 remake of Point Break surf onto Netflix, bringing the heavily criticized movie to a new audience and once again setting it up for another bashing from fans of the Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves 1991 original. However, it is hard to expect the movie to be a dud when it hits the platform, as many such movies have discovered a surge in interest when landing on the streaming service.

Released in theaters almost a decade ago, the reboot of Kathryn Bigalows much-loved action thriller attempted to modernize the movie for a new audience, with Luke Bracey and Edgar Ramirez having the daunting task of following Reeves and Swayze in the roles of rookie FBI agent Utah and charismatic criminal Bodhi, respectively. However, the original movies cult classic status meant there were many people with fond memories of the 1991 release, and that resulted in a lot of comparisons...

The Beekeeper Fans Will Love Jason Statham and Donald Sutherland's Actioner
Image
Quick Links What Is The Beekeeper About? The Mechanic Is Even Better than The Beekeeper How Statham vs. Sutherland Shapes The Mechanic

New to Amazon Prime Video in July 2024, The Beekeeper is an action thriller typifying Jason Statham's vigilante brand of cinema. The story concerns Adam Clay, (Statham), a beekeeper who mounts a violent revenge campaign on behalf of his swindled landlady, Eloise Parker (Phylicia Rashad). Hired by the FBI to find her killer, Clay is identified as a member of the Beekeepers, a cryptic organization known for secret intelligence missions.

While The Beekeeper has drawn positive reviews (70% Rotten Tomatoes) for its breathless action and slick production values, the formulaic plot makes it hard not to think of Statham's previous action extravaganzas. Statham made the first of two Mechanic movies in 2011, co-starring the late great Donald Sutherland. For those who got a kick out watching Statham go toe-to-toe with Jeremy Irons in The Beekeeper,...
