Though The Conjuring Universe will continue with "Phase 2", September's The Conjuring: Last Rites is being marketed as the final instalment in the main series of movies that began back in 2013 with James Wan's original supernatural shocker.
This time, paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) are convinced to come out of retirement to look into the infamous Smurl family haunting.
"It is one of the more Googleable ones," producer Peter Safran tells EW. "It really fit the bill for us, being able to lean into something that audiences could go and Google after the movie. 'Oh! They really did have that many children.' 'Oh! They really were this age, and the grandparents really were there.' All of that stuff has always been meaningful to us."

The final chapter in The Conjuring franchise should’ve been a victory lap for both fans and the filmmakers. Instead, it feels more like another flat tire on a haunted tricycle. Warner Bros. just dropped the first trailer for The Conjuring: Last Rites, and while it’s cool seeing Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga back as the loving couple Ed and Lorraine Warren, fans couldn’t help but ask one very important question: Why didn’t James Wan direct The Conjuring: Last Rites? Seriously. Why isn’t the guy who made this franchise scary again behind the camera? Instead, we’re getting Michael Chaves—again. You remember him, right? The director of The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (aka the weakest entry of the franchise) and The Curse of La Llorona (aka let’s pretend it never happened). Chaves is back to helm the Warrens’ swan song, and...

It’s the end of the era with the upcoming arrival of The Conjuring: Last Rites. The first two-minute teaser is incredibly disturbing and seems to signal that phase one of the franchise is going out with a horrifying bang.
Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga reprise their roles as Ed and Lorraine Warren for likely the last time. Mia Tomlinson plays Judy Warren, Ben Hardy is Tony Spera, and Steve Coulter is Father Gordon. The cast also includes Rebecca Calder, Elliot Cowan, Kíla Lord Cassidy, Beau Gadsdon, John Brotherton, and Shannon Kook.
James Wan directed the first two The Conjuring films, and Michael Chaves directed 2021’s The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It. Chaves returns to direct this ninth entry overall in the franchise. Ian Goldberg, Richard Naing, and David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick wrote the screenplay, with Michael Clear, Judson Scott, Natalia Safran, John Rickard, Hans Ritter, and David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick executive producing.

The Warrens are back for their last case.
Warner Bros. released the first official trailer for The Conjuring: Last Rites on Thursday, which marks the fourth and final Conjuring movie. However, it’s not necessarily the last in the franchise.
This Conjuring film, like the others, is inspired by the real-life case files of paranormal investigators and couple, Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga). This time, it follows the 1986 Smurl case, a family who was tormented by a demon for more than a decade.
“Every case is different. Every family is different. Once we start, there is no going back. Anything can happen. And most likely, anything will,” Ed says in the trailer.
Lorraine hints at this one being the most dangerous as she says “something’s different” to Ed. At the end of the trailer, a demon says to Lorraine: “We’ve been waiting so patiently so patiently for you,...

Up until this week, we didn’t have any plot info on The Conjuring: Last Rites, but Entertainment Weekly was finally able to draw some information out of the filmmakers. They shared that the film is set in 1986, five years after the events of The Devil Made Me Do It. The Warrens have retired from the exorcist business, largely due to Ed’s heart attack, the one sustained during the demonic happenings of the third film. They still hit the university circuit, presenting talks at various schools, but even those opportunities are drying up.

Ed and Lorraine Warren have one final case to crack in the iconic “The Conjuring” franchise. The paranormal investigating duo, portrayed by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, first appeared onscreen in 2013; now 12 years and a slew of spinoff films later, the original “The Conjuring” will close out with “The Conjuring: The Last Rites.”
Michael Chaves returns to direct “The Last Rites.” In total, the franchise has three “Conjuring” films, three “Annabelle” features, two “Nun” movies, and “The Curse of La Llorona.” Chaves helmed “La Llorona,” “The Nun II,” and “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It.” A “Conjuring” series is in development at Max as well.
“The Last Rites” is set in the mid-1980s when the Warrens were retired. However, the couple returns for one last case involving the Smurl family. The Warrens most famously investigated the 1976 hauntings in Amityville, New York, which inspired the “Amityville Horror” franchise.

The fourth (and supposedly final) film in The Conjuring series started with the 2013 movie is supposedly coming to an end with The Conjuring: Last Rites, due in theaters this September. But while the mainline movies centering around demonologist couple Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine (Vera Farmiga) Warren might be coming to an end, that doesn't mean the overarching The Conjuring Universe is finished.
In fact, I'd imagine the billion dollar-grossing franchise still has a lot of life left in it, with New Line Cinema head Richard Brenner even calling Last Rites simply the end of "Phase One." James Wan, who directed the first two movies, recently provided an update on at least one potential future film, a spinoff centering on the Crooked Man introduced in The Conjuring 2.

The Conjuring franchise has been quite the success for Warner Bros., but Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) will be calling it quits with The Conjuring: Last Rites. As this will likely be the last we see of the Warrens, The Conjuring producer Peter Safran told Entertainment Weekly that they “toyed with the idea” of going all out with an Avengers-style finale that would have included every demon they’ve fought throughout the series.
“When we were developing the movie, we always called it Conjuring: Endgame because it was a culmination of a great story that audiences had been with,” Safran said. “I’m not saying that our movie is the same as the Avengers: Endgame run of movies, but there was something about building an audience through this storytelling mechanism, through Ed and Lorraine Warren. Knowing that Last Rites was going to be the last one made...

After more than 10 years and three films in the main saga, Ed and Lorraine Warren will finally hang up their crucifixes with The Conjuring: Last Rites, which is set to hit theaters this September. Once again starring Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson, we now have our first look at the fourth and final film, which is directed by Michael Chaves and sees James Wan return as producer.
A behind-the-scenes featurette was shared on social media yesterday (seen below), showcasing a little of what we can expect to see when the Warrens return on September 5. It took us through the timeline of their cases to reveal that the final film takes place in 1986, and for Wan, he calls it a bittersweet ending to a long chapter in his life:
"The Conjuring: Last Rites is, for me, pretty much the end of an era. It is bittersweet, but all good things come to an end.

The Conjuring Universe is one of the most unique horror franchises to ever exist. While most horror properties take the form of numerous sequels, remakes, reboots, and requels, the "Conjuring" series is the first to adopt the model made famous by the Marvel Cinematic Universe: a "main" franchise supported by several smaller ones in its orbit. Thus, we have the three "Conjuring" films, the three "Annabelle" pictures, the two "Nun" movies, and (depending on who you're talking to) the outlier, "The Curse of La Llorona." Ironically, the "Conjuring" property also adopted the growing pains that the MCU experienced in its early days, for while there was a general set path for each — in Marvel's case, it was decades of comic book lore, and for the "Conjuring," it was the real-life exploits of demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren — there wasn't exactly a rigid plan, either.
Thus, while the three main "Conjuring...

Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga investigate a new haunting in The Conjuring: Last Rites, their final run in the franchise. Director Michael Chaves recently revealed that the film almost became a culminating event for their characters.
Chaves almost fulfilled one fan theory about The Conjuring: Last Rites, which would have seen Ed and Lorraine Warren taking on a gauntlet of previously vanquished evils. That would have been an epic battle, a fitting wrap-up to Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga's run in the saga. "Even as we were developing it, we were throwing a bunch of ideas out," Chaves told Entertainment Weekly. "How shamelessly big can we make it? How epic can we make it? Is this the culmination of all the demons coming to face them?"

This fall will see the release of "The Conjuring: Last Rites," which will be the final go around for Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson as Ed and Lorraine Warren. But this is still a universe full of demons and supernatural forces that need dealing with, with or without the Warrens. Hence, if franchise overseer James Wan has his way, one particularly nightmarish monster may yet get his day in the sun as the subject of a spin-off movie.
In a preview piece from the folks at Entertainment Weekly, Wan, who directed the original blockbuster smash "The Conjuring" that started the property as we know it, explained that he still has a desire to make the "Crooked Man" movie that was planned several years back but never materialized. The creature in question first appeared in 2016's "The Conjuring 2," and while other supernatural beings such as "Annabelle" and "The Nun" have received multiple films,...

As far as true stories go, the "Conjuring" franchise has always played rather fast and loose with history. Ed and Lorraine Warren, the married demonologist couple played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, are based on actual people who really embarked on paranormal exorcisms -- though the actions of the real Warrens, both of whom have since passed away, were perhaps a bit more controversial than the movies would have you think. Most (if not all) of the cases at the center of each "Conjuring" movie and spinoff are similarly taken from true accountings ... though, obviously, franchise architect James Wan and the filmmakers that have followed in his footsteps always spice things up for a worthy big screen experience. The horror property is now set to come to a close with the fourth mainline film, this year's "The Conjuring: Last Rites," but the plot of the upcoming sequel might be the most true-to-life one yet.

Exclusive: Apple’s Cape Fear series has three new additions: Anna Baryshnikov (Love Lies Bleeding), Jamie Hector (Bosch), and Clara Wong (Billions).
Character details are under wraps. As previously announced, Javier Bardem, Amy Adams, Patrick Wilson and Cch Pounder are also set.

Co-stars Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga are bidding farewell to their "arranged marriage" in The Conjuring universe. Last Rites will be an epilogue to their story, but they teased that the Warrens also face a reckoning in their final case.
Vera Farmiga teased that something from their past will haunt the Warrens in The Conjuring: Last Rites. "[The audience is] going to witness a moment in the Warrens' lives — and a pretty profound moment," she told Entertainment Weekly. "It's a moment that makes time stand still. This one's different than the others. The other three [Conjuring films] were about hauntings, and this one is about reckoning, in a way." That could reference a previous case or an unrevealed backstory, she didn't elaborate.
One thing's for sure: Last Rites will be Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga's final run in the Conjuring universe. Executive producer Peter Safran confirmed as much, but teased the Warrens could return in future installments.

Netflix announced this morning that Jay Kelly, Noah Baumbach’s new film starring George Clooney and Adam Sandler, is slated for release in theaters on November 14 and will debut on streaming on December 5.
The service also unveiled a first-look still of Clooney as the title character, which you can view below.
In announcing Jay Kelly, Netflix referred to the project as a “heartbreaking comedy,” though little about the project is known apart from that. Per the logline, everybody knows Jay Kelly…but Jay Kelly doesn’t know himself.

Noah Baumbach is getting back in the awards race, and he’s bringing a star-studded cast including George Clooney and Adam Sandler.
Netflix has announced that Baumbach’s upcoming feature “Jay Kelly” will open in theaters on November 14 before hitting the streaming service on December 5. The announcement was accompanied by a photo of Clooney, who plays the title character, walking past a poster of himself.

A cryptic official synopsis reads “Everybody knows Jay Kelly, but Jay Kelly doesn’t know himself.”

Fargo wrapped up with its final season last year, and the show has seen many movie and TV veterans come and go through its five-season run. One of the stars from the first and second seasons of Fargo was Allison Tolman, famed for her role as Molly Solverson. Unlike many other TV shows, Fargo brings in a mostly new cast each season to tell a new story, with names like Billy Bob Thornton, Jon Hamm, and Jason Schwartzman all coming and going over the years.
