Peter was born in New Orleans, USA, but moved to England, where he lived his entire life, as a child. He married Helen Irving, and they had two children, David (1940) and Diana (1943). Peter was a very talented musician, he was especially good at playing the organ. After the death of his wife in the 1990's he continued to live in their apartment in Little Common, in Bexhill on Sea with his daughter Diana.
