“Oppenheimer” is the juggernaut Oscar contender that is predicted to take home not just Best Picture but a whole bunch of other Academy Awards, too, including Best Director for Christopher Nolan and Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr. However, we thought that “La La Land” had Best Picture all wrapped up in 2017 but come Oscars night, “Moonlight” swept in to claim the evening’s biggest prize in a shock win. So, is “Oppenheimer” as safe as everyone thinks?
“The Holdovers” is well-poised to pull off an upset. The movie follows Paul Giamatti as a curmudgeonly professor who is forced to look after students staying behind during the Christmas holidays. The film has been a hit with critics, audiences, and awards groups, too.

Hugh Jackman and Oscar-winner Kate Winslet were convinced to star in a very experimental film. Their star-power was used to attract other A-List stars to a project they’d later regret being in.

In 2013, a roster of A-list stars were seen in the comedy film Movie 43. Many directors contributed to the project, including Dumb and Dumber filmmaker Peter Farrelly. The film had several storylines focusing on actors caught in ludicrous and raunchy situations. Apart from Winslet and Jackman, Halle Berry, Emma Stone, and Gerard Butler were just a few of the stars that made an appearance.
Producer Charlie Wessler and Farrelly conceived of the project after seeing another sketch comedy movie.
“So you wanna know how this crazy movie came about? There was this movie that came out called Kentucky Fried Movie.

Ten years ago, Hollywood subjected audiences to one of its foulest experiments in cinema, and Awfully Good Movies is revisiting the crappy comedy compilation known simply as Movie 43!
Before Peter Farrelly proved himself outside of the gross-out comedy genre with Green Book, he and longtime Farrelly Brothers producer Charles B. Wessler took four years and 6 million to make what they thought would be the modern day equivalent to John Landis’ Kentucky Fried Movie. But instead, the 13 shorts that Farrelly directed alongside some notable comedy directors and starred some of Hollywood’s biggest stars were brutally torn apart by critics as a parade of rejected Funny or Die shorts that had no business opening in theaters nationwide.

(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)
There are, and always will be, movies that critics hate. It's just the nature of the beast as it exists. And let's be fair, general audiences oftentimes simply disagree with critics. Just look at the fact that "Venom" made a stunning 856 million at the global box office against pretty terrible reviews. To put it simply, it do be like that sometimes. But then there is the occasional movie that is perceived to be so bad, it almost instantly etches itself into the annals of cinema history in the most unflattering way possible. Enter 2013's "Movie 43," a comedy with staggeringly abysmal reviews and an equally staggering, star-studded cast that stunned Hollywood with its awfulness. Again, if the reviews are to be believed.

Exclusive: In 2016, Cheryl Guerriero’s script about a college football star-turned-convict landed her a spot on the Black List. Nearly four years later, the writer-producer’s screenplay became Palmer, the Apple TV+ film directed by Oscar-winning The Cave helmer Fisher Stevens with Justin Timberlake starring in the lead role.
Set in a small Louisiana town, Palmer follows Timberlake’s Eddie Palmer as he returns to his community following some time behind bars. Looking to start over, Eddie finds company in a 7-year-old boy named Sam (breakout Ryder Allen), who amuses himself with pretty hair accessories, dolls and Disney princesses. Abandoned by his mother (Juno Temple) and often the target of bullying, Sam forges a brotherly bond with Eddie that helps the latter pick up the pieces of his once-broken life. June Squibb stars as Eddie’s grandmother Vivian, and Alisha Wainwright plays Sam’s Teacher Maggie.

The trailer for Justin Timberlake’s new film “Palmer” has arrived. In the drama, Timberlake plays a former high school football star turned convicted felon who now has the responsibility of caring for 7-year-old Sam, whose interest in tea parties, dolls and fairies makes him the target of bullies at school.
“Palmer” is a coming-of-age story directed by Fisher Stevens, and the film shows a solemn, more introspective side to Timberlake as he looks after Sam and comes to realize that neither he nor the boy have to conform to what everyone expects them to be.
“Listen to me, son, kids are mean, especially when they see something that they’re not used to seeing,” Timberlake says in the trailer. “The truth is, I haven’t felt like I was good at anything until Sam.”
Cheryl Guerriero wrote the screenplay for “Palmer,” which also stars Juno Temple, Alisha Wainwright, June Squibb and Ryder Allen.

Justin Timberlake stars as an ex-athlete who returns home after serving a prison sentence in the trailer for the new movie “Palmer.”
The Sk Global film, bought by Apple TV Plus in July, tells a story surrounding lead character Eddie Palmer, an athlete who becomes addicted to painkillers and who gets caught robbing a home. Green Book, which explores race relations in the Us in the 1960s, has been named as the Best Picture at the 91st Academy Awards.
The film beat a string of formidable challengers to nab the top honour. It faced strong competition from Roma, A Star Is Born and Bohemian Rhapsody. Other nominees were Black Panther, Blackkklansman, The Favourite and Vice.
Green Book, backed by Anil Ambani-owned Reliance Entertainment's Amblin Entertainment, is based on a true story of friendship and relationship between a working class Italian-American bouncer, who becomes a driver of an African-American classical pianist on a tour of venues through the 1960's American South.

“Green Book” producers and director Peter Farrelly thanked a great number of people during their Best Picture acceptance speech on Sunday, but the men portrayed in the biopic itself went unacknowledged.
Jim Burke, Charles B. Universal’s “Green Book” was the last film standing Sunday night at the 91st Academy Awards, wrapping up a mud-slinging season that saw critics and rival campaigns alike take aim at the film.

The 91st Annual Academy Awards are finally here, and who knows how they’re going to play out? Ironically like many of the films it’ll be honoring, the yearlong buildup and campaign for the event has been plagued by backstage controversies – with the hiring and prompt resignation of would-be Mc Kevin Hart to the debacles concerning its runtime, it looks like the host-less Oscars won’t be giving out jet skis for shortest acceptance speech this year.
With that in mind, the purpose of the Academy Awards is to celebrate 2018’s greatest movies; and following the trend of the show’s last several seasons, this year’s nominees are in themselves historic, not only for their diversity, but also for the genres and studios that they represent.

Updated with full list, more details: The 91st Oscar nominations were announced this morning in a presentation by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, with Alfonso Cuarón’s memory movie Roma from Oscar newcomer Netflix and Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Favourite from perennial frontrunner Fox Searchlight leading the way 10 nominations apiece.

The other noms include Focus Features’ BlacKkKlansman from Spike Lee, Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody from 20th Century Fox, Universal’s Green Book and, in a first for a movie based on a comic book, Disney/Marvel’s Black Panther broke through on the list. A few hours ago, the Producers Guild of America threw a bit of a monkey-wrench into the awards season works. Giving out their Producers Guild Awards, the top prize went to Green Book, shooting that controversial film to the front of the Oscar race. The PGA voters always catapult their winners towards Best Picture at the Academy Awards, so it was expected that this would occur here too. Well, it probably has, just with a movie that wasn’t the presumptive top tier with producers. Guess that wasn’t the case, so we need to re-evaluate things a bit. I’ll try to make sense of it all below! PGA went with Peter Farrelly’s Green Book over what seemed like more likely choice in Bradley Cooper’s A Star Is Born and Alfonso Cuaron’s Roma. Green Book wasn’t even necessarily considered next in line, as an upset...

Last year’s Producers Guild Awards told us which movie — “The Shape of Water” — would win the Oscar for Best Picture weeks before the Academy Awards. In fact 20 of the previous winners of this important prize have then gone on to Best Picture victories.
For the 30th annual PGA ceremony slated for Saturday evening, January 19, at the Beverly Hilton, we already know that the top choice will be at the very least a major front-runner for this year’s Oscar. The Producers Guild of America hands out its awards on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2019. That is three days before the academy announces the nominations for the Oscars. While the PGA ceremony is not televised, it is an important stop on the road to the Oscars.
The PGA Awards has an enviable track record at presaging the eventual Best Picture winner at the Academy Awards. The guild and the academy have agreed on 20 of the most recent 29 Best Picture champs, including last year’s double winner. “The Shape of Water.”
Since both groups expanded the Best Picture category, the PGA has predicted 70 of the 81 of the Best Picture nominees over the past nine years. Last year the guild went seven for nine in previewing the Oscars line-up: “Call Me by Your Name,” “Dunkirk,” “Get Out,” “Lady Bird,” “The Post,” “The Shape of Water” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.” The other four guild nominees were “The Big Sick,...

In the wee hours of the night (or early in the morning if you live across the pond), the nominations for the 72nd annual BAFTA Awards were announced. The British Academy, which chimes in each year before Oscar makes its announcement, put forth their nominees while Academy members now have their ballots in hand. As such, this is worth paying attention to. They split things up fairly evenly today, backing one movie in particular, but given plenty of others over a half dozen citations. Still, there were major snubs, which we’ll get to below. BAFTA certainly didn’t follow previously blazed trail this awards season, that’s for sure. Leading the way by a healthy margin was Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Favourite, which racked up an even dozen nominations, well ahead of any other film. Next in line was the quartet of Bryan Singer’s Bohemian Rhapsody, Damien Chazelle’s First Man,...

Now we know what the most popular movies are vying for Oscars this year: The Producers Guild of America’s motion picture and television nominations went mainstream. Winners will be revealed at the 30th Annual Producers Guild Awards, to be held January 19 at the Beverly Hilton.
Many of these films will wind up on the the final list of Oscar nominations to be revealed on January 22; the eventual winners are here as well. That does not mean that “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “A Quiet Place,” or “Crazy Rich Asians” will land Best Picture nominations, but it is a sign of strength and popularity. Oscar voters tend to take degree of difficulty in production into consideration, and may lean into big box office hits this year.
(Left off the PGA list are long-shot Best Picture contenders “If Beale Street Could Talk,” “Mary Poppins Returns,” and “First Man.”)
