“Shouldn’t Chip know better?”
Mark Duplass was uneasy when he learned that Chip Black, his character in “The Morning Show,” was about to embark on a messy, secret workplace affair — with a junior staffer, no less. It’s been a rough few years for Chip, who was demoted at “The Morning Show” to gracefully become Alex’s (Jennifer Aniston) personal producer. In Season 3, Chip’s life further spiraled as he entered a relationship with Alex’s assistant, Isabella (Hannah Leder).
“I was nervous about that storyline. I had the same reaction you did,” Duplass says. Though flawed, Chip is often “The Morning Show’s” voice of reason, and Duplass worried it was out of character to send him down the path of Mitch Kessler (Steve Carell), the former anchor Chip outed for sexual misconduct in Season 1.
But two things soon became clear. First, Chip and Hannah’s relationship was mutual and consensual,...

While discussing Season 1 of “The Morning Show” with Gold Derby, Mark Duplass described his character, Charlie “Chip” Black, as a person who’s “struggling towards integrity.” After sexual misconduct allegations against co-anchor of the show’s titular daily morning news program Mitch Kessler (Steve Carell) come to light, Chip, the executive producer of the program at that time, is forced to reckon with his own complicity in fostering a toxic culture at “Tms” by turning a blind eye to some of the illicit behavior that had been happening behind the scenes. When Season 3 opens, in 2022, a few years have passed since the events of Season 1, so how much progress does Duplass believe his character has made on his journey toward integrity?
“I think it hasn’t been a linear path. Most human beings don’t operate on a linear path, and it’s certainly that way for Chip. It’s more of a sine,...

“The Crown” is gearing up for its last hurrah at the SAG Awards, an organization that has bestowed a number of prizes onto the Netflix regal show over the years. It claimed the highly coveted TV drama ensemble prize twice (2019 and ’20), while individual winners through the years were Claire Foy (2016 and ’17), John Lithgow (2016) and Gillian Anderson (2020). Now the sixth and final season is hoping to prevail for a third time, which would tie it with “Downton Abbey” in this category at three total wins.
Season 6 faces off in the TV drama ensemble race against fellow nominees “The Gilded Age,” “The Last of Us,” “The Morning Show” and “Succession.” Elizabeth Debicki is “The Crown’s” only solo acting nominee this year, with her co-nominees in the TV drama actress category being Jennifer Aniston (“The Morning Show”), Bella Ramsey (“The Last of Us”), Keri Russell (“The Diplomat”) and Sarah Snook (“Succession”).

This year’s SAG Awards nominations for drama ensemble run the gamut in terms of total cast members nominated. You have “The Gilded Age” on one side with a jaw-dropping 34 people represented. And then you have “The Last of Us” on the other side with just two — hi, Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey! HBO’s zombie apocalypse series has now tied the Screen Actors Guild record with “Key and Peele,” which was the first TV show to nab an ensemble citation with just two stars: Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele.
The “Key and Peele” funny duo lost to “Orange Is the New Black” for comedy ensemble in 2016, which had a whopping 34 cast members nominated that year. Hmm, a two-person cast losing to a 34-person ensemble? Might SAG Awards history repeat itself? “The Last of Us” competes this year against “The Gilded Age” (34 cast members), “Succession” (18), “The Crown” (15) and “The Morning Show...

Oh, Alex.
After being embroiled in constant scandal throughout the first two seasons, Alex Levy (Jennifer Aniston) has spent Season 3 of “The Morning Show” on a moral high ground, from blowing off a glitzy broadcast from outer space in order to report on abortion rights in Texas to helping Chris (Nicole Beharie) stand up to the racism of network board president Cybil (Holland Taylor). But then Paul Marks happens.
Episode 6, “The Stanford Student,” sees Alex interview Paul (Jon Hamm), the tech billionaire attempting to buy the network, on her show in an attempt to unearth his past and investigate whether she and her colleagues will be able to maintain their journalistic independence under his ownership. One of the hottest awards contenders of the year, Apple TV+’s “The Morning Show,” has just revealed to Gold Derby that a whopping 22 cast members will be eligible for the ensemble prize at the 2022 Screen Actors Guild Awards. Lead actresses Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon serve as bookends of the alphabetical list (see below), which also includes recent SAG Award nominees Steve Carell and Billy Crudup, plus new cast member (and guild queen) Julianna Margulies.
Seea ‘Good Wife’ showdown: Julianna Margulies and Christine Baranski to face off at SAG Awards?
The last time “The Morning Show” contended at the 2020 SAG Awards, Aniston prevailed in the individual actress category, but the drama was shockingly snubbed in the ensemble race. That egregious oversight should be rectified this year, as the cast now comes in second place to win, according to Gold Derby predictions, behind only HBO’s “Succession.”

Creating an on screen farcical love letter to a meaningful friendship can often be a cathartic relationship for many filmmakers who work with their closest companions. That’s certainly the case for up-and-coming auteurs, Alexandra Kotcheff and Hannah Leder, who made their feature film written, directorial and producing debuts with the new dark comedy, ‘The Planters.’ […]

“Just start shooting.” That was the advice the legendary A.C. Lyles delivered to young filmmakers when they asked him how he managed to produce five films every year. “Don’t waste your time waiting for some nameless executive to give you the green light,” Lyles told them.
His approach was problematic, but in today’s stalled pandemic economy, it makes perverse sense. Two young female filmmakers successfully pursued his tactic this year with festival-winning results that might inspire others to follow suit. So did a distinguished 87-year-old director who has finished shooting his new film built around two veteran stars, ages 82 and 90.
In both cases, the filmmakers knew the odds were stacked against them – too much experience on one side, too little on the other. They thus decided not to wait in vain for a studio green light, instead scratching together their resources until they could finally shout, “Action!”

"She's very weird." 1091 Pics has released a trailer for an indie dark comedy titled The Planters, which first premiered at the Raindance Film Festival last year. This "film fest favorite" was entirely shot without a crew, made by and starring Cali natives Alexandra Kotcheff & Hannah Leder. Awkward telemarketer Martha Plant (Kotcheff) lives a lonely existence burying treasure and eating split pea soup. When she takes in a vagrant with multiple personalities (Leder), she discovers having three friends in one may be more than she can handle. The film's cast is rounded out by New York theater actor Phil Parolisi, and cinema veteran Pepe Serna in supporting roles. This kind of looks like Wes Anderson meets David Lynch, with even more awkwardness than both of them. This will probably end up as a cult classic beloved by a small group of fans. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Kotcheff & Leder's The Planters,...

The Planters, a do-it-yourself dark comedy written, directed by and starring Alexandra Kotcheff and Hannah Leder in a film they crewed themselves, has scored a North American rights deal via 1091 Pictures. A September theatrical release followed by a December 8 on-demand bow is in the works.
In what could be one template for making a movie during the pandemic, Kotcheff and Leder shot for 127 days entirely without an on-set crew. They remained in isolation other than trips to the supermarket, a bike shop and gas stations for long drives to the pic’s desert locations. The longtime friends handled their own cinematography, production design, costumes, and hair & makeup. The pic also was helped by landing a Women in Film Finishing Fund grant.
The result is the pair’s debut feature, which follows Martha Plant (Kotcheff), an awkward telemarketer who’s down and out — sucking at her job and grieving her recently deceased parents.
