The 2005 Deadpan Comedy Movie Bill Murray Called 'Perfect'
Image
It's well known throughout Hollywood that Bill Murray doesn't have an agent. Back in 2019, Murray spoke with IndieWire about how his home phone used to ring and ring, pestering him with job offers and potential movie roles. He hated hearing from his agent, preferring to answer the phone if it was a friend just calling to chat. He preferred his privacy. Murray was in-demand enough that he could afford to set up a 1-800 number that he would only distribute to a few key filmmakers or casting directors. He understood that there were various studios around Hollywood where some beleaguered interns were commanded to "Get Bill Murray on the phone!" Luckily, those interns had his 1-800 number, which would direct callers to a computerized voice message system. Murray could then check the machine whenever he wanted, picking through demands at random.

This may be why Murray tends to work with the same directors repeatedly.

Sacramento Review: Michael Angarano’s Amiable Road Trip Dramedy Charts a Tried-and-True Path
Image
With a plucky, inherent likability as a performer that extends to his leisurely directorial aesthetic, Michael Angarano’s second feature Sacramento is an amiable, freewheeling road trip dramedy that rides on its central performances, courtesy of Michael Cera and the actor-writer-director as strained best friends. In exploring fatherhood, mental health, and the lies we tell ourselves (and others) to keep trucking along, Angarano and co-writer Chris Smith haven’t uncovered a wealth of revelations on tried-and-true thematic ground, yet there’s just enough smart comedic timing and dramatic perceptiveness to make this an adventure worth taking.

Experiencing more anxiety about the impending birth of his child than his wife Rosie (Kristen Stewart), Cera’s Glenn needs an excuse to unwind from the mounting mental and physical preparations. Despite Glenn being in the process of “phasing out” his untrustworthy, sporadically attentive best friend, Rickey (Angarano) shows up in his back lawn,...

Teresa Palmer’s Shoe Game: The Designer Heels That Make Her Look Taller
Image
Teresa Palmer, the Australian actress known for her roles in Warm Bodies, Hacksaw Ridge, I Am Number Four, Bedtime Stories, and Take Me Home Tonight, is 5 feet 4 inches (162.6 cm) tall and wears a shoe size 7 (US).

While she now stuns in designer heels on the red carpet, Palmer humorously recalls her younger years as a self-proclaimed “socks and sandals girl,” admitting, “I was so dorky up until I was about 14 or 15 and started to get a little bit cooler, but I was a socks and sandals girl. I would wear big frilly socks with sandals and all the kids would tease me.” Her evolution from quirky childhood fashion to high-fashion footwear highlights her journey into Hollywood glamour.

Teresa Palmer stuns in a Chanel tweed jacket and ruffled mini dress, paired with chic cap-toe pumps and a pearl-embellished bag, as she attends The Fall Guy premiere in Los Angeles with her husband,...

This City is a Battlefield will serve as the closing film for the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) on the evening of February 8.

The prolific writer-director has also finished shooting her next film, Tukar Takdir, based on an anthology of short stories.

This City is a Battlefield was adapted off a 1952 novel titled “A Road with No End” by Mochtar Lubis, which had been sitting on Surya’s bookshelf untouched for a while.

“I happened to read it by chance,” said Surya. “I had just read a few pages of it, I could not forget the images that it brought to my mind. The prose is written in such a...

Stephen King's The Running Man Remake Reunites Michael Cera and Edgar Wright
Image
Edgar Wrights The Running Man is shaping up to be one of the finest Stephen King adaptations yet, at least when it comes to its cast. Adam Brody’s Failed DC Entry Resulted in Hot Romance With Famous Actress Years Before Leighton Meester Wedding
Image
Fans almost had Adam Brody in a DC movie earlier before his stint in Shazam! and he would have played The Flash in a George Miller film. This may come as a shock to many fans, but the Justice League franchise almost made it to the big screen during the same time as Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy.

Evidently, the planned project would have featured a different cast, and even though the movie never got off the ground, something good came out of it. Two of the main stars ended up having a fling.

Adam Brody and Teresa Palmer Found Brief Romance Amid Cancelation of Justice League: Mortal

George Miller was set to helm Justice League: Mortal and it would have seen the biggest superhero crossover years before Marvel Studios’ The Avengers. The production was reportedly delayed due to the 2007 to 2008 WGA strike,...

Rebel Ridge director Jeremy Saulnier’s next movie will be a fun Halloween story
Image
The thriller Rebel Ridge was announced back in 2019, but took five years to make its way out into the world because the production was delayed by the pandemic lockdowns, then by the departure of lead actor John Boyega a few weeks into filming, reportedly due to “family reasons.” Saulnier has said that the making of Rebel Ridge saw him “slamming right into the Hollywood I’ve tried to avoid,” and, “We came back three years in a row to make that movie.” But the troubles were worth it, because the finished film was well-received (you can read our 8/10 review Here) and a success on Netflix. Now, Saulnier is looking forward to his next movie – and he’s going back to his roots to tell a fun Halloween story.

Saulnier’s previous credits include Murder Party, Blue Ruin, Green Room, Hold the Dark, and episodes of True Detective season 3. During an interview on The Playlist podcast,...

New Girl: The Star Who Accused ABC Replaced Him With Jake Johnson for Not Being “Handsome Enough”
Image
Jake Johnson has become quite a well-known actor since his role in Fox’s New Girl. Playing the character of Nick Miller, his performance was iconic in so many ways, becoming one of the most unhinged and beloved characters in all of sitcom history. Since then, the actor has only increased his versatility in his craft, being a part of projects like Self Reliance, Let’s Be Cops, Minx, and most famously, voicing Peter B. Parker in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

Knowing how much success and recognition he has gained through these roles, it is not surprising when he joins the cast of some projects. However, there was one particular series that had quite a lot of drama surrounding it.

10 Box Office Flops From The 2010s That Everyone Now Loves
Image
Not all great movies succeed at the box office; quality doesn't always equal profit. Timing and marketing play a big role in a movie's success, not just its content. Flops can become classics, with films like Scott Pilgrim & Blade Runner 2049 still being praised years later.

Movies shouldn't be defined by their financial performance, as some great movies from the 2010s were seen as commercial failures at the time. A movie's box office receipts don't always reflect its quality. Timing and marketing are two huge factors that can influence how much money a movie makes, and they are both completely out of the hands of the people who actually worked on the movie.

There have been plenty of great movies which bombed at the box office over the years, and the 2010s were no different. Huge directors like Martin Scorsese, Paul Thomas Anderson and Denis Villeneuve all had box office flops in the 2010s,...

10 Movie Heroes I Didn't Realize Were Villains Until Much Later
Image
Many movie protagonists display behavior that makes them villains upon reflection. Heroes can hurt others and be the villains of someone else's story. Characters like Scott Pilgrim, Jack Sparrow, and Woody show villainous behaviors often overlooked.

The so-called heroes, or at least the protagonists of certain movies, demonstrate a lot of behavior that actually makes them the villains of the story or maybe they are just in a movie where every character is horrible. In many of these cases, I and everyone else didn't realize this until rewatching the movie. Some of these characters are so iconic that everyone's first instinct is to love them because pop culture itself does. However, their actions did a lot to hurt other characters.

This is a bigger trend than movies where the hero takes the villain's offer or movies where the hero was the explicit villain all along. Most commonly, it is seen...

Jessica Alba Reigns Over Netflix Top Charts With Trigger Warning
Image
Several years ago, Netflix shook things up by not only including top ten charts on its platform for viewers to see, but the streaming giant also made a whole website dedicated to sharing viewership metrics. It has provided an odd window into what people are watching on the world's largest streaming service at any given time. At the moment, a whole bunch of people are watching a new action flick called "Trigger Warning," which stars Jessica Alba as an ass-kicking Special Forces soldier/bar owner.

As of this writing, director Mouly Surya's film is sitting firmly in the number one spot on the Netflix movie charts ahead of the DreamWorks animated flick "Home" and Universal's "Fifty Shades of Grey." The latter film's star, Dakota Johnson, has been having quite the run on Netflix, as Marvel's "Madame Web" recently dominated the charts as well -- but that's another story altogether.

Jessica Alba Explains Creative Process Behind Trigger Warning's Action Scenes
Image
Jessica Alba is no stranger to action movies, with a starring role in the sci-fi series Dark Angel. However, even for a seasoned actor, crafting the perfect action sequences, like the ones seen in Alba's latest Netflix film Trigger Warning, is never an easy feat.

Speaking to ComicBook, Alba explained the creative process that went into the film's hand-to-hand action scenes. "We talk a lot. We talk a lot about all the details," she said. "I actually felt like we leaned further into the intention and the motivation of the character every step of the way. So then nothing was in vain and nothing felt silly. I think that was the biggest thing. We just needed a purpose for everything to be happening the way it was happening. And once we nailed that, the action can be as wild and cool and choreographed."

Trigger Warning Review: I Wanted More From Netflix's Weak Jessica Alba Actioner Beyond Stereotypes
Image
Mouly Surya's direction elevates this weak script, making it visually appealing despite its shortcomings. Alba is fine as an action star, but her performance is not nearly as charismatic as it should be. Trigger Warning is filled with stereotypes, a slow pace, and a buildup that is disappointing.

Jessica Alba headlines Netflixs latest JLo-coded actioner, Trigger Warning (2024) , from screenwriters John Brancato, Josh Olson, Halley Gross, and director Mouly Surya. The film follows Special Forces commando Parker (Alba) as she finds out about her fathers sudden death while being on active duty overseas. She returns home and becomes his bar's owner, bringing her face-to-face with her former boyfriend and his troubling family, The Swanns. While this tension-filled reunion is difficult enough for the grieving daughter, Parkers search for answers gets more dangerous as she faces a violent gang attempting to run her hometown with illegal weapons.

Jessica Alba's New Netflix Action Thriller Can't Break Actor's Dismal Rotten Tomatoes Streak
Image
Jessica Alba's Trigger Warning receives a low Tomatometer score, continuing her streak of critical failures. The Netflix thriller stars Alba as a Special Forces operator in a bar takeover amidst gang warfare. Despite Trigger Warning boasting a quality cast, it fails to break Alba's decade-long Rotten streak.

Trigger Warning isn't enough to save Jessica Alba from an increasingly damning Rotten Tomatoes streak. The latest Netflix thriller stars Alba as a Special Forces operator struggling against brutal gang warfare after taking over her late father's bar. It was released on June 21. Trigger Warning's extensive cast is filled with respectable actors, including Alba, Anthony Michael Hall, Mark Webber, and Jake Weary. Unfortunately, it does not appear to have thrilled critics.

While Alba undoubtedly hoped for positive results, her latest movie is another critical disaster. It is Alba's eighth movie in a row that failed to earn a positive Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Trigger Warning Review: Jessica Alba Is Fierce in Netflix Conspiracy Thriller
Image
Jessica Alba is the real deal as an action star, dominating great fight sequences in Trigger Warning and making her character, Parker, instantly likable. Anthony Michael Hall impresses as a powerful senator, oozing sleaze and making a strong villain. Mark Webber is great as well, though some supporting performances are pretty thin. Trigger Warning has weak subplots, an overbearing score, and often feels more like a TV show than a movie.

There are movies where you sit and wait for certain iconic scenes simply because you know they're coming, and they're worth the wait even if they're few and far between. The movie may not be a masterpiece, but it has at least one of those "wait for it" scenes that you anticipate with glee, awaiting a joke, a death, or a twist. Or in the case of Trigger Warning, an action scene or two.

The film is a by-the-numbers...

Image
After a five year absence from the world of feature films, Jessica Alba (who did star in the 26 episodes of the Bad Boys spin-off TV series L.A.’s Finest a few years back) has returned with the action thriller Trigger Warning, which was just released through the Netflix streaming service today. To mark the occasion, JoBlo’s own Kyanna Mondezie had the chance to sit down for an interview with Alba, and you can check it out in the embed above!

Trigger Warning has the following synopsis: Special Forces commando Parker (Jessica Alba) is on active duty overseas when she gets called back to her hometown with the tragic news that her father has suddenly died. Now the owner of the family bar, Parker reconnects with her former boyfriend-turned-sheriff Jesse (Mark Webber), his hot-tempered brother Elvis (Jake Weary) and their powerful father Senator Swann (Anthony Michael Hall), as she looks to...

Trigger Warning Review
Image
Plot: Special Forces commando Parker is on active duty overseas when she gets called back to her hometown with the tragic news that her father has suddenly died. Now the owner of the family bar, Parker reconnects with her former boyfriend-turned-sheriff Jesse, his hot-tempered brother Elvis and their powerful father Senator Swann, as she looks to understand what actually happened to her dad.

Review: It has been five years since Jessica Alba’s last big screen role. While she led the Bad Boys spin-off L.A.’s Finest alongside Gabrielle Union the year after, Alba has spent the last half-decade working as Chief Creative Officer for The Honest Company, which she co-founded. While she recently stepped down from that role, her work on Trigger Warning goes back to 2021. The three-year road for Alba’s first leading role in a decade should indicate the quality of the finished product. Marketed as being an...

Jessica Alba in Trigger Warning (2024)
“Trigger Warning” – An American-style Netflix Thriller: A Nostalgic Nod for Action from the 80s and 90s
Jessica Alba in Trigger Warning (2024)
“Trigger Warning” is a Netflix movie starring Jessica Alba and Mark Webber. It is directed by Mouly Surya.

“Trigger Warning,” a movie now streaming on Netflix, presents a classic American action thriller that takes us back to the iconic landscapes of the United States, complete with gas stations, small towns, and traditional folks living somewhat on the edges of globalization.

Plot

A soldier from the armed forces returns to her small town following the death of her father. She gradually uncovers a clandestine arms-trafficking operation in the town – the very reason her father was killed. As no one in the town seems oblivious to the issue, the soldier’s investigation becomes increasingly treacherous.

Film Overview

Surely, regular Netflix users might be slightly worn out from an influx of Korean production. Hence the streaming service has decided to rekindle the traditional side of classic American thrillers, a blend of the Western...

‘Trigger Warning’ Review: Jessica Alba Has the Moves but Netflix Action Thriller Is Strictly Routine
Image
Jessica Alba’s new starring vehicle boasts plenty of action movie credentials. The star, making her first feature film appearance in five years after guiding her business venture The Honest Company to a billion dollar-plus valuation, has previously displayed her skills in such film and television projects as Dark Angel and the Fantastic Four and Sin City franchises. Production company Thunder Road boasts the John Wick and Sicario movies among its credits. And its trio of screenwriters are responsible for such efforts as Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, A History of Violence and HBO’s Westworld.

More impressively, the film features many women among its creative team, including Indonesian director Mouly Surya (Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts), making her English-language debut, and director of photography Zoë White (The Handmaid’s Tale). Unfortunately, despite everyone’s best efforts to deliver a femme-driven actioner revolving around a central character who comes across like a female Rambo,...

‘Trigger Warning’ Review: Supersoldier Jessica Alba Wages War on Domestic Criminals in Slick but Contrived Melodrama
Image
Jessica Alba unleashes her inner Rambo in “Trigger Warning,” wherein her active U.S. military officer gets pulled homeward by tragedy, only to uncover corruption she’ll have to clean up before leaving again. Indonesian director Mouly Surya’s well-crafted first English-language feature is too formulaically contrived to qualify as “elevated genre” or to boast the personal stamp of her prior work. Still, it’s an entertaining, pacey action melodrama that should do well for Netflix, where it launches on June 21.

After two intriguingly conceived but somewhat vague initial features, Surya made an assertive impression with 2018’s “Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts.” That striking “feminist outlaw Western” distinctively juggled elements of revenge thriller, black comedy and character-driven social critique. Her more conventionally commercial American debut is another vengeance tale driven by a strong-willed, capable female protagonist. But this is also the first film on which Surya has not had a hand in the screenplay.

‘Trigger Warning’ Review: Jessica Alba Unleashes Her Inner Rambo in Lifeless and Instantly Forgettable Netflix Action Movie
Image
Forgettable even by the impossibly low standards of a mid-budget Netflix action movie, Mouly Surya’s “Trigger Warning” might be a shade more colorful than colossal bores like “Red Notice” and “The Gray Man,” but this still-bland Jessica Alba vehicle is all the more frustrating because it doesn’t feel like some defanged summer blockbuster that was denied its true purpose by skipping past theaters. On the contrary, an R-rated, character-driven “First Blood” throwback about a Special Forces commando who returns from Syria to find her fading hometown in the grip of a high-powered arms dealer is precisely the kind of action movie that Netflix should be making.

To wit: It scratches an itch that more traditional studios won’t touch, allows a well-liked actress to get back in the game without having to carry a franchise on her shoulders, and does so at a scale that strikes a happy...

Anthony Michael Hall would welcome a remake of Weird Science
Image
Science and technology have advanced significantly since the 80s. With things like Bluetooth technology, 3D printing, VR and Ar goggles, and the scary progression of AI, science could also get a lot weirder. And one person who wholeheartedly endorses a potential exploration into these possibilities with in a new film is Anthony Michael Hall. Hall, who capitalized on his awkward years in movies like The Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles, had recently given his seal of approval to the notion that his classic film Weird Science could potentially receive a remake.

ScreenRant reports on Hall speaking about this topic in an interview with Inverse as he promotes his upcoming Netflix movie with Jessica Alba, Trigger Warning. While the idea of a remake has probably been thrown around in the past, Hall says he isn’t aware of any immediate plans for one. However, he mentions that he’s also not opposed to one.
