I’ve watched a lot of television shows this summer: The Vampire Diaries, How I Met Your Mother, and The Wonder Years, to name just a few.
What’s more, I didn’t even have access to a TV.
Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, and other online streaming outlets have changed the way we watch our favorite shows — and, now that they are diving into the world of original programming, are about to change it even more.
With more and more outlets buying streaming rights for broadcast network and cable content, purchasing exclusive deals is becoming much pricier, and streaming companies are finding it increasingly difficult to stand out. By creating original content, these online networks will have content they control (creatively and financially) and have exclusive use of.
Netflix and Hulu have already dipped their toes in the water, while Amazon recently announced its plans to create shows.

With Emmy season underway, Hulu is betting on its original politics-driven series Battleground. Originally developed for Fox, the 13-episode documentary-style show from J.D. Walsh follows a group of campaign workers led by manager Tak Davis (Jay Hayden) in Madison, Wis. working for an underdog candidate trying to get elected to the U.S. Senate. Filmed on location in Madison, Walsh wrote (or co-wrote) and directed every episode of the series, which wrapped its first season May 8. As Walsh tells it, the move from network television to Hulu was a blessing in disguise. "What made

Hulu kicked off the so-called digital upfronts today with presentations for its expanding stable of originals. Documentarian Morgan Spurlock, Saturday Night Live‘s Seth Meyers and Entourage‘s Adrian Grenier were on hand to schmooze with advertisers. Producers hope to lure away some of the billions of dollars that go to cable and TV networks; Vevo, Microsoft, AOL, Yahoo and Disney Interactive are expected to pitch their shows to advertisers next week. In addition to Spurlock, Meyers and Grenier, talent on hand to boost Hulu included Megan Hilty from Smash, Speed Levitch of Up To Speed, Jd Walsh and Jay Hayden from Battleground, Michael “Dooma” Wendschuh from Flow and Mayer Hawthorne with Live From The Artist’s Den. Hulu says paid subscribers for Hulu Plus surpassed 2 million during first-quarter 2012 and claims that Hulu represents 20% of the overall online video market and 40% of the premium online market. Hulu is gearing up for battle. The online TV service launches its first original scripted series, Battleground, on Tuesday, February 14, and will continue to roll out new episodes every Tuesday over the next several weeks. The show, created by Jd Walsh, takes a comedic faux documentary-style look at a group of campaign workers in the battleground state of Wisconsin. Jay Hayden stars as Chris "Tak" Davis, the manager of a distant third-place Senate candidate, while Ben Samuel, Teri Reeves and Alison Haislip also star. Hulu has produced 13 episodes of the 22-minute comedy, which also comes from executive producers Marc Webb (500 Days of Summer, The Amazing Spiderman) and Hagai Shaham. This story first appeared in the Jan. 27 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine. Nearly five years into a venture backed by rivals Disney, NBCUniversal and News Corp., video hub Hulu is going where it's not yet gone: original scripted programming. The online video site's first entry, Battleground, is a workplace dramedy that explores the behind-the-scenes chaos of unruly political campaign workers from (500) Days of Summer's Marc Webb and actor-turned-director Jd Walsh. The project, set to launch Feb. 14, joins a second season of Morgan Spurlock's documentary series A Day in the Life and Richard

[1] As Netflix makes its first foray [2] into original programming with Lilyhammer, competitor Hulu has entered the fray as well, with workplace mockumentary Battleground. Directed by actor J.D. Walsh (Two and a Half Men) and produced by Marc Webb (The Amazing Spider-Man) and Hagai Shaham (The Details), Battleground centers around a lively group of campaign workers in Wisconsin who labor to get their third-place candidate into the Senate. Watch the trailer after the jump. [via Mashable [3]] Though the Ides of March-y premise has potential, especially in a big election year, I'm feeling lukewarm about the actual trailer. It doesn't look bad, but it also doesn't look like anything special -- I see a lot of well-worn cliches about the difficulties of balancing work and family. It's hard to gauge a series' quality based on such a short clip, though, so I'll reserve judgment until I actually see the first episode. All thirteen 22-minute...

Last week, Hulu CEO Jason Kilar announced the internet’s go-to destination for the on-demand streaming of movies and television is “excited to invest approximately half a billion in content in 2012 on behalf of our users.” Over the weekend, Hulu revealed a handful of the projects in which that $500 million will be invested. Battleground is a “workplace dramedy” set in the world and office of a Democratic primary campaign for a Us Senate seat in Wisconsin. Conceived by Jd Walsh (an actor who once worked for Senator John Kerry), the seemingly more faux documentary than mockumentary action follows the activities of head campaign strategist Chris Tak Davis as he strives to make his employer the latest representative of the Badger State. Hulu picked up 13 half-hour episodes of Battleground after Fox Broadcasting Company developed and then dropped the project last year. The program premieres on February 13, with new installments released every Tuesday.

Former NBA star Rick Fox is well-known for his acting prowess. Now he's taking on a new entertainment venture. Fox is producing a web series entitled Hysteria, directed by Frank Lin, which is divided into 26 segments. The producers are releasing one piece a day until Halloween.
And just because it's a web series, don't think that they have a bunch of struggling actors and actresses in this one. Among the cast are Jd Walsh, who was featured in "Two and a Half Men"; Emmanuelle Vaugier from Saw II and Saw IV; Todd Grinnell, who's been featured in "Desperate Housewives"; Nolan Gould of "Modern Family"; and Laura Allen of "Terriers." Cheyenne Jackson heads the cast. He has Flight 93 and appearances on "Glee" and "30 Rock" to his credits. A pretty kickass cast.

It's always a better sign when I am not asking my TV what exactly is wrong with this picture when watching a new episode. In other words, this week's installment of The Mentalist (TV) was so very much better than last week's. Jane's (Simon Baker) past is a twisted affair, and it's always interesting to see that come back and bite him in the ass. Being such a convincing charlatan as he was, it's disturbing to think of how many gullible marks he's fleeced. But when Team Lisbon (Robin Tunney) is called in on the kidnapping of a wealthy kid named Connor Flint, Jane is about to get slapped with the reality of what he did once again. It seems that Beth Flint (Kelli Williams) was one of Jane's more lucrative clients and she calls the Cbi and asks for the great Patrick Jane himself because she still believes him to be a psychic.
