Not so long time ago, in a galaxy not so far away, Alfonso Cuarón was unintentionally influencing the future of the Star Wars franchise.
Andor star Diego Luna recently recalled that Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) director Gareth Edwards originally pitched him on the film by comparing his vision to Cuarón’s Y tu mamá también (2001), which starred a young Luna.
“I’ve been a Star Wars fan since I was a kid. I grew up with the first trilogy and became a fanatic,” he explained to Vanity Fair of how he ended up going from mostly indie projects to the Disney franchise. “I played Jedi with my cousins, although I must admit that part of me was always drawn to the dark side. I can’t deny that. I was the smallest of all my friends, and I went crazy playing Star Wars.

Spoiled Gen Z rich kids have a destructive queer romance while partying, doing drugs, and committing ludicrous crimes in the insufferable Pet Shop Days, which ticks every box on the checklist for terrible films. It's hard to believe that Hollywood stalwarts Willem Dafoe, Peter Sarsgaard, and Maribel Verdú play supporting roles in this dreck. There had to be a massive disconnect between the scripted material and what was filmed (multiple years ago) and then clumsily cobbled together in post-production. Pet Shop Days achieves that rare feat of having nothing positive to write about. The story, acting, and filmmaking on display are abysmal. MovieWeb doesn't have a tier for zero stars, but Pet Shop Days comes close.

Pet Shop Days, written by Jack Irv, Olmo Schnabel, and Galen Core and directed by Schnabel in his debut, features a protagonist so unlikable, so emotionally ugly it’s almost to be admired. Alejandro (Darío Yazbek Bernal) is a rich Mexican kid and poster child for Freud: he hates his father (Jordi Mollà) and loves his mother (Maribel Verdú). There’s very little subtext in this film. The themes are as abrasive as the neon lights in any one of the many, many scenes set in strip clubs and underground drug dens hidden in the shadowy parts of New York City.
When Alejandro makes a deeply irrational mistake that nearly kills his mother, he runs to the United States, living off dwindling credit and short-term scams. He befriends Jack (Jack Irv), a gullible, aloof young man who quickly falls for Alejandro’s marginal charm. Jack’s parents (Emmanuelle Seigner...

Off the back of a busy European Film Market, leading Spanish sales agent Latido Films has picked up Gracia Querejeta’s tenth feature, “The Good Luck,” screening in competition at this year’s Malaga Film Festival.
“The Good Luck,” based on leading Spanish novelist Rosa Montero’s title of the same name, turns on Pablo, who decides to get off the train at a seedy town and buy an old, run-down apartment across the tracks to begin a new life as if he weren’t the renowned architect he actually is. He might be running away from someone, or something, or even from himself. Everything in town seems to be stagnating except for Raluca, an optimistic woman open to any surprises that might change her life for the better. She’s decided to trust her luck, even if life hasn’t always been kind to her.

The Spanish crime drama follows a Civil Guard sergeant and a U.S. Army agent as they uncover dark secrets in a small town.
Time to head to Spain - at least on screen. “When No One Sees Us” is Max’s first-ever Spanish-language original, and it’s diving straight into a world of crime, corruption, and long-buried secrets. Set during Holy Week in Morón de la Frontera, the show follows a Civil Guard sergeant and a U.S. Army special agent as they investigate two separate cases - only to realize they’re tangled in the same dangerous web. With Maribel Verdú (“The Flash”) and Mariela Garriga (“Mission: Impossible 7”) leading the cast, plus an early film festival debut that turned heads, this one’s got all the makings of a must-watch thriller. “When No One Sees Us” premieres Friday, March 7, on Max, with new episodes dropping weekly.

Max’s highly anticipated Spanish original series “When No One Sees Us” (“Cuando Nadie Nos Ve”) will premiere internationally on March 7 in all territories where the platform is currently available.
Directed by celebrated filmmaker and screenwriter Enrique Urbizu and starring Spanish icon Maribel Verdú, Mariela Garriga and Austin Amelio (“The Walking Dead”), the Max Original promises to be a standout in the realm of Spanish crime dramas.
The series, which previewed at the 2024 San Sebastián Film Festival, has garnered local critics’ praise. Based on the book of the same name by Sergio Sarria, its story unfolds during Holy Week 2024, where the American way of life at the U.S. Army airbase coexists almost entirely separate from the deep-rooted traditions of Andalusia.

“Pet Shop Days” captures those reckless nights where it feels like anything can happen — and quite often, anything and everything does.
Olmo Schnabel’s directorial debut premiered at the 2024 Venice Film Festival, and has a star-studded cast to boot. Schnabel, the son of artist and filmmaker Julian Schnabel, co-wrote the film with lead star Jack Irv and Galen Core.
The official synopsis reads: “In an act of desperation, impulsive black sheep Alejandro (Dario Yazbek Bernal) flees his home in Mexico. On the run from his unforgiving father, Alejandro finds himself in New York City, where he meets Jack (Jack Irv), a college-age pet store employee with similar parental baggage. Together the two enter a whirlwind romance sending them down the rabbit hole of drugs and depravity in Manhattan’s underworld. When Alejandro’s past threatens to catch up with him, Jack is forced to choose between his family and a life on the run.

"We think we're safe from everything... when no one sees us. In fact, that's when we're most vulnerable." Max has revealed an official trailer for a new Max Original Spanish-language series titled When No One Sees Us, ready for streaming in March. The series explores a series of crimes in the political and cultural frontier of so-called "deep Spain," also connected to one of the largest U.S. military bases abroad and its personnel, during the celebration of Holy Week in Morón de la Frontera (Seville). Because it involves this U.S. military base and shady people from there. Two women are united by an investigation that will unravel the darkest secrets. Set in Morón de la Frontera,...

The Flash stood every chance of being a great comic book movie. After Zack Snyder's divisive approach to the Scarlet Speedster, filmmaker Andy Muschietti looked set to get the hero back on track and team him up with Michael Keaton's iconic Batman.
Unfortunately, the movie didn't work. Whether it was Ezra Miller's personal issues overshadowing the character, his zany performance/s, or a lot of bad CGI, The Flash failed to strike a chord with audiences. Even after decent reviews, it flopped with $271 million worldwide.
While it would be incorrect to say The Flash movie was in the shadow of The CW's The Flash, there was an awful lot that TV show did better than Warner Bros.' big screen effort.

The Brothers Grimm tale of Snow White is back in the zeitgeist again with the upcoming Disney live-action remake, but there have been many non-Disney adaptations of the story in Hollywood history that have flown under the radar. One such example is Pablo Berger's 2012 film Blancanieves. This film takes the premise of Snow White and sets it in Spain within a much darker and realer setting. Starring Macarena García as Carmen (Snow White), Maribel Verdú as her evil stepmother Encarna, and Daniel Giménez Cacho as Carmen's father Antonio, Blancanieves is one of the strangest, most surreal fairy tale adaptations out there and definitely worth a watch.

“It’s not TV,” HBO used to claim of itself. Watching the first 12 minutes made public of Enrique Urbizu’s crime thriller “When No One Sees Us,” Max’s first Spanish original sneak-peaked at San Sebastián Festival Monday morning, the legendary HBO slogan came to mind.
Rather than TV, the scenes are pure cinema of the highest order.
In them, a man, Antonio Jiménez, 38, dressed in a white ceremonial robe, kneels, draws a sword, carefully places it to his abdomen, and commits hari-kari.
Then a float of the local virgin edges down a street of whitewashed houses on the first day of Holy Week, in the village of Morón de la Frontera, Andalusia, southern Spain. When it stops, a young man emerges from the packed rows of penitents carrying it and, now out in the street, hallucinates that fellow black-hooded penitents and then the float itself levitate high in the sky.

Six years after season one, Elite finally bids farewell. The reason behind the Netflix Spanish series’ rise to fame was its depiction of heightened school politics along with the vivid sex scenes and the random parties. The creators, Carlos Montero and Dario Madrona, always added their go-to element of thrill—a murder mystery that unfolded at the center of the drama. After the first couple of seasons, the creators focused primarily on delivering the ‘guilty pleasure’ that the audience enjoyed watching. While teenagers hooked on drugs could have been the real issue here (think Euphoria), as a show, that was not the route Elite intended to take. The glam quotient, the drama, the dirty politics, the mad display of wealth, and the steamy scenes—these have always been the focus of the series. And I am not complaining! Not everything is meant to be a moral lesson, but when the...

When most cinephiles think of Francis Ford Coppola, they think of his miracle run in the 1970s. During that decade, he directed four films, all of them five-star masterpieces: The Godfather, The Conversation, The Godfather, Part II, and Apocalypse Now. Or they think of embarrassments from his for-hire period, including the Robin Williams weepy Jack. Yet those five films hardly encapsulate the entire career of Francis Ford Coppola, which will likely end with the upcoming Megalopolis. Instead the best indication of Coppola as an artist and filmmaker might be found in the most recent movies he’s made, with Coppola having released three self-produced and self-financed pictures every two years between 2007 and 2011: Youth Without Youth, Twixt, and Tetro.
Although they vary in quality, and none top his work from the ’70s, this independent trio captures the experimental and romantic heart that lies at the center of Coppola’s overall oeuvre.

This post contains spoilers for both "Challengers" and "Y Tu Mama Tambien."
It's only its first weekend in theaters, but "Challengers" has already gotten everyone talking. There's just something captivating about a love triangle where all sides touch, and it's even more captivating when all that lust and jealousy get boiled down to a single heated match of tennis. There is no greater upping-the-ante movie moment than when Patrick (Josh O'Connor) subtly signals to Art (Mike Faist) during the game that he's recently slept with his wife Tashi (Zendaya). There've been plenty of fictional sports matches where a mid-game twist got everyone on the edge of their seats, but "Challengers" casually outdid them all.
What made "Challengers" truly special is Art's reaction to Patrick's reveal: he simply says, "F**k off." It's a line that could easily have been delivered with straightforward rage, but Faist throws some bemusement into the mix,...

Some films deliberately keep key details ambiguous, which can be frustrating but ultimately rewarding for viewers. Films like The Usual Suspects and Y Tu Mamá También use major dramatic reveals to transform viewers' perceptions. Movies like Memento and Frailty hide sinister motivations and twist endings that challenge viewers' understanding.
While many moviegoers anticipate a clear understanding when watching a film, some deliberately keep things confusing until the end. This intentional ambiguity provides a satisfying moment of clarity that lingers beyond the credits, making the movie more intriguing upon a second viewing. Audiences generally expect films to adhere to a basic narrative logic that allows them to connect with the story and characters. However, some movies make risky moves by intentionally obscuring key details for much of the runtime. Rather than spelling everything out upfront, these films indulge in ambiguity, withholding vital context around the plot and motivations.

Olmo Schnabel's directorial debut Pet Shop Days was received well at the 80th Venice International Film Festival, and recently had its U.S. premiere at the Chicago International Film Festival. The emotion-driven film stars Jack Irv (Bobby) and Darío Yazebek Bernal (The House of Flowers) as two crazed romantics that slip down a rabbit hole of depravity in Manhattan’s underworld. Willem Dafoe, Peter Sarsgaard, Emmanuelle Seigner, Camille Rowe, and Maribel Verdu also star.
The plot revolves around Alejandro (Bernal), an impulsive black sheep, and pet store employee Jack (Irv) who test fate and enter a whirlwind romance. Expect some frenetic intensity in the film, which Schnabel co-wrote alongside star Jack Irv and Galen Core (The Great Pretender). The filmmaker says he initially co-wrote the film as a kind of “love letter” to a New York City that no longer exists.

The Spanish teen drama kicked off on Netflix in 2018 and became one of the streaming service's most popular series.
As the years have passed, the cast has been refreshed consistently to keep the drama fresh and exciting.
The latest seasons have failed to live up to the hype of the initial three seasons, and now, it's all ending.
On Wednesday morning, Netflix announced via social media that Elite Season 8 would bring the series to a close.
The news broke two days before the premiere of Elite Season 7, so those still hooked on the series still have plenty to look forward to.
The original cast included María Pedraza, Itzan Escamilla, Miguel Bernardeau, and Miguel Herrán.
Also on the original cast are Jaime Lorente, Álvaro Rico, Arón Piper, Mina El Hammani, Ester Expósito, Omar Ayuso, and Danna Paola.

Here is a wrap-up of all the news you need to know from Tuesday, October 17, 2023.
Netflix has taken an odd approach to promoting Elite Season 7.
We've had random teasers on social media that haven't given much of the plot away,
Now, three days before its premiere date, we have a full-length promo that teases what's on the horizon.
Off the bat, I'm not interested in going back to Las Encinas.
Bringing Omar Ayuso back made me think that a change of scenery was on the menu.
Unfortunately, that isn't the case.
We see that Omar is still trying to piece together his thoughts about Samuel's death at the end of Elite Season 5.
New cast members for Elite Season 7 include Mirela Balic, Gleb Abrosimov, Nadia Al Saidi, Fernando Líndez, Alejandro Albarracín, Iván Mendes, and Maribel Verdú.
They join Elite Season 6 cast members Valentina Zenere, Andre Lamoglia, Carmen Arrufat, Alex Pastrana, Alvaro de Juana,...

With the writers’ strike over, a new studio brand and new management in part of international, Paramount Global execs are attending Madrid’s Iberseries & Platino Industria, Rome’s Mia market and Mipcom as they talk up their competitive assets and priorities to the international market.
In one move, five months after the launch of Paramount Television International Studios in May, Paramount Global’s Darío Turovelzky delivered a keynote on Thursday at Iberseries & Platino Industria.
A rising star at Paramount, with oversight of ViacomCBS’ Argentine and Chilean broadcast networks Telefe and Chilevisión from 2019, Turovelzky himself was promoted to executive VP, Broadcast & Studios, Paramount Global, Latin America in late July.
His on-stage interview came just one day after Paramount’s U.K.’s chief marketing officer Anna Priest was announced as senior VP and head of Paramount+ for U.K. market, overseeing its “strategic vision” and pursuing growth opportunities.

A Deadly Invitation is a Mexican mystery thriller movie directed by José Manuel Cravioto. It stars Maribel Verdú, Stephanie Cayo, and Manolo Cardona. The film is based on the novel “Invitación a un Asesinato” by best-selling author Carmen Posadas.
The film follows Agatha, a true crime podcast host who is invited to a gathering at her sister’s, Olivia’s, luxurious yacht for a weekend getaway together with a group of her closest friends. The reason for the gathering is unknown to all. As the guests arrive on the yacht, tensions begin to rise culminating in… a murder.
A Deadly Invitation A Quick Review
If you are into Agatha Christie, and however many film and series adaptations of her novels have been produced over time, I recommend this movie.
It follows close to the exact same patterns, and production style as A Knives Out Mystery (2019); a contemporary multi-character murder mystery...

“The Head,” The Mediapro Studio’s biggest hit, is advancing towards a third season, Ran Tellem, Tms head of international content development, confirmed Tuesday at Iberseries & Industria Platino.
“‘The Head’ started out something like four years ago as a limited series only for six episodes and now it’s going into third season, so you might say we never lived up to our promises,” Tellem joked on stage at an early Iberseries panel, entitled Creative Content Strategies, where he shared the stage with former Netflix international head Erik Barmack, now at L.A.-based Wild Sheep Content.
Season 3 has yet to receive a production greenlight. The Mediapro Studio aims to produce ‘The Head,’ Season 3 out of Spain. Beyond that, Tellem gave few details. Currently in development, the series is being written by writers from four countries in three different continents.

There is a grand tradition of messy but glorious films about couples who bring out the crazy in one another and end up doing all manner of bad stuff. Sadly, Pet Shop Days, a directorial debut for writer-producer Olmo Schnabel (son of Julian Schnabel), is just messy and never glorious.
Even with the built-in advantage of Willem Dafoe and Emmanuelle Seigner taking major roles (neither at their best), cameos from Peter Sarsgaard and Maribel Verdu, and a mass list of executive producers who should have known better (including Michel Franco and Martin Scorsese), this poorly paced crime drama is afflicted with terrible dialogue and weak lead performances from Jack Irv (also a co-screenwriter, along with Schnabel and Galen Core) and Dario Yazbek Bernal as two repellent, entitled brats in love.
The opening sequence introduces us to Alejandro (Dario Yazbek Bernal, half brother of Gael Garcia Bernal), a young man in his 20s,...
