New month, new horror recommendations from Deep Cuts Rising. This installment’s five selections reflect the month of June 2024.
Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.
This month’s offerings include a father gone mad, deadly dares, and more.

Summer officially begins in June, so why not watch a horror movie whose story is set under the hot sun? The TV oddity High Desert Kill seems like it’s about another camping trip gone wrong, with its male cast setting off for the New Mexico wilderness. Exploited gets off to a start that certainly lives up to its title as webcam performer Caleb is beaten to death in mid-performance.
Move forward a few months to the start of a new school year and Brian (Jordan Ver Hoeve; 666: Teen Warlock) is moving into his dorm room and starting college life. After walking in on his roommate Jeremy and his girlfriend Lexi he starts to get settled in. He doesn’t notice a flash drive identical to the one the school gave him sitting on the desk. He’s in for a nasty shock as it contains videos of the online sexual activity of the room’s previous occupant. And, in the last video, being murdered.

"You sick, lonely webcam freak!" Gravitas Ventures has revealed an official trailer for an indie thriller titled Exploited, from filmmaker Jon Abrahams. This is being dumped on VOD this week, and this trailer will paint a pretty clear picture as to why. A college freshman becomes obsessed with the previous owner of his school issued laptop. His quest becomes complicated when he falls in love with his roommate, who's already taken. The mysterious disappearance of the webcam model ends up with their lives being manipulated and blackmailed. The film "tells a provocative story set on a college campus against the backdrop of a voyeuristic hacker. Real world fears such as personal privacy and camming are explored in this psychological thriller." The film stars Sierra McCormick, Makenzie Vega, Leah Pipes, Will Peltz, Spencer List, Jordan Ver Hoeve, Colin Bates, and Hannah Rose May. It doesn't look like there's much to see here - skip it.

13 Reasons Why really shakes things up during season two, which is in large part due to Hannah Baker's court case. While many characters tell their truth about what really happened on the tapes, we also learn a few things about Hannah's past as one of her former classmates, Sarah (played by Makenzie Vega), takes the stand during episode 10, "Smile, B*tches."
Through her testimonial, we learn that Hannah was actually a bully at her last school. Aside from calling Sarah vulgar names, Hannah, along with two other girls, also cyberbullied their classmate by creating a Facebook page where people could post mean memes about her. It eventually got so bad that Hannah and the rest of the girls were suspended, and the girl ended up dropping out of school.

Fender Bender is written and directed by Mark Pavia, whose last film was the 1997 Stephen King adaptation of The Night Flier. The film follows Hilary (Makenzie Vega) is just an average high-school cheerleader who wants to get good grades and do right by her strict parents, but she's about to have the worst day of her life. She's discovered that her jock boyfriend is fooling around on her with another cheerleader and then he sees that she's caught them and confronts her. Thankfully, she breaks up with him and drives away. Sitting at a stop sign distraught, she is texting when she gets rear ended by a man who's got an odd affect about him (the terrific Bill Sage). They exchange information and Hilary is smart enough...

As someone who has a soft spot in her heart for road-set thrillers like The Hitcher, Joy Ride, The Hills Have Eyes, Splinter, Kalifornia, Breakdown, or even the granddaddy of them all, Duel, I really had a lot of fun with writer/director Mark Pavia’s lean and mean slasher Fender Bender. It has a well-conceived story that (mostly) stays on the rails, characters that don’t feel like they’re trying to insult my intelligence as a horror fan, and a finale that takes us in unexpected directions.
Fender Bender begins by honoring its slasher roots through an opening scene that establishes its killer before picking up with the film’s true heroine, Hilary (Makenzie Vega), a high schooler who is probably having the worst day ever, and she hasn’t even met The Driver (Bill Sage) yet. She snuck out of the house to catch her cheating boyfriend (Harrison Sim) in the act,...

Premiering on Friday, June 3rd on the Chiller channel is writer/director Mark Pavia’s Fender Bender, a cautionary slasher that explores the darker side of vehicular incidents. The film stars Makenzie Vega, Bill Sage, Cassidy Freeman, Dre Davis and Kelsey Leos Montoya, and it’s the first original production to come from the fine folks over at Scream Factory.
Fender Bender follows a teenager named Hilary (Vega), who gets into an unexpected collision with a mysterious stranger (Sage) right after getting her license. Once her parents find out that their new car has been damaged, Hilary is left home alone while they head out for a relaxing weekend, and the teen must soon contend with a masked leather-clad maniac who wants nothing more than to spill her blood and move on to his next victim.

In noting that Fender Bender is Shout! Factory’s first producing credit, I wish the following words were a bit more positive.
Spoiler alert: they aren’t.
What I’ve noticed over the years is that horror movies are easy to make (hence the quantity), yet deceptively hard to execute (hence a massive genre quality gap). Anyone can recreate deaths on-screen, but it takes skill to avoid driving in the same circles as so many filmmakers before. Take Fender Bender as your latest example, where filmmaker Mark Pavia dilutes an original idea with stale, musty slasher generics that have been dominating too many of my reviews lately. A select few moments shine – mostly involving gnarly gore effects – but the sum of this creepy driver’s rampage is nothing but a bland home invasion/slasher wannabe told through a weak, timid voice.

Exchanging information after an accident on the road is usually the responsible, smart thing to do… except when the car you collided with belongs to a killer. Ahead of Fender Bender’s June 3rd premiere on the Chiller channel, the official trailer for Scream Factory’s new horror film teases the deadliness of the Driver.
Written and Directed by Mark Pavia (Stephen King’s The Night Flier), Fender Bender stars Makenzie Vega (The Good Wife), Dre Davis (Pretty Little Liars, Scavenger Killers), Cassidy Freeman (Smallville, Longmire) and Bill Sage (American Psycho, We Are What We Are). Evocative of the horror-thriller classics of yesteryear, Fender Bender brings you back to a time when the boxes on the shelf at your local video store beckoned you with masked, knife-wielding maniacs and a twisted sense of morals.

Remember when Grace Florrick purely existed to cause drama for Alicia Florrick? Those days are long gone. Well, she's still causing some drama, but it's not at determent to her mother. The Good Wife finally fixed its Grace problem. A problem Makenzie Vega was aware of. "This season she's really able to support Alicia more and I think in doing so, I think everyone's probably to like her more—I like her more," she told E! News when we visited the set in October as the cast and crew were filming this Sunday's episode. Grace and Zach (Graham Phillips) seemed to exist in the early days of The Good Wife purely to let Alicia (Julianna Margulies) emote or struggle with balancing her...

When we last saw Alicia Florrick (Julianna Margulies), Diane Lockhart (Christine Baranski), Cary Agos (Matt Czuchry) and Co., Cary had just plead guilty, accepting a plea deal and facing a few years in prison after refusing to flip on Lemond Bishop (Mike Colter). Quite the cliffhanger! All hope seemed to be lost. Meanwhile, Alicia joked about killing Grace's (Makenzie Vega) teacher and it became a campaign issue. When The Good Wife finally returns on Sunday, Jan. 4, Cary will hire a prison consultant (Domenick Lombardozzi), Alicia begins her debate prep with the help of...

This week, on The Good Wife: Will leads a coup against Diane, David Lee works pro bono, and Grace wants to look pretty
The Good Wife continues its strong fifth season this week with “A Precious Commodity”. While the court case of the week doesn’t go to the show’s most entertainingly reliable well, bizarre quirks of the law, it does embrace another- moral murkiness. Alicia is wholly in the clear, doing her best to represent the wishes of her client, no matter her personal thoughts on the issue, but the case itself is deliciously tricky. Abortion is an incredibly complex issue, both intellectually and morally, and its quandaries are frequently reduced or dismissed simplistically by arguments from both sides. It’s incredibly refreshing to...

Yes, "Good Wife" fans, one of the ladies on the show is getting a new love interest this season -- but don't worry, it's not Alicia (yet). She's got plenty of men on her hands already. No, the girl who will finally meet someone is actually Grace Florrick (Makenzie Vega), Alicia and Peter's teenage daughter.
While it'd be hard to classify 16-year-old Grace as rebellious, she hasn't exactly been a walk in the park for Alicia. She actively campaigned for her father's opponent, and her interest in the Bible and religion has confused Alicia throughout the series.
Her new love interest is no Bible-thumper, though. Grace will meet Connor in the eighth episode of the season. He hasn't been cast yet, but the role is described as a "very handsome, cool, isolated, dangerously charismatic" student who attends Grace's private school on scholarship. He's definitely the school's resident bad boy, with...

When the TV Gods close a door, they really do open a window. Case in point, this afternoon’s late-breaking news that has Kristin Chenoweth making the most out of the unfortunate demise of her most recent ABC series Pushing Daisies Gcb by jumping on board The Good Wife for what is being billed as a recurring role.
According to CBS, “Chenoweth will match wits with both Alicia and Peter in her role as a top-of-her-game political reporter who wants to know more about the Florrick campaign and marriage.” According to us — combined with the recent casting of Newsradio alum Maura Tierney as a Chicago billionaire, coupled with the recent revelation regarding Kalinda’s mysterious estranged husband — the fourth season premiere of The Good Wife can’t come soon enough!

Let me slam on the brakes for a second. "The Good Wife" is great because of its cast, the crew, the writing, the direction -- but there's something about its guest stars that make the CBS drama extra-special. It's reminscent of the days of "Ally McBeal," whenever the lawyers of Cage & Fish had to try their cases in front of a special-guest judge or attorney, but "The Good Wife" takes it to a whole other level.
Last night's season three finale, directed by co-creator Robert King, was aptly titled "The Dream Team" -- which is what Louis Canning (Michael J. Fox) and Patti Nyholm (Martha Plimpton) christened themselves when suing the firm for $50 million for fraud and malicious prosecution. Wait ... let's backtrack here. The episode began with Diane (Christine Baranski) and Alicia (Julianna Marguiles) winning a flabbergasting $25 million settlement ($7 million more than they were asking) against a pharmaceutical company, which...

Tonight on The Good Wife: Alicia and the Treasury Department Clash Once Again (Sneak Peek)
Season 3 of The Good Wife has seen the firm facing governmental opposition in both the cases that they have taken and on a personal level with the Sa investigation into Will (Josh Charles). The Screen Actors Guild has announced their list of nominations for the best performances of 2011. I have to point out that I'm surprised Tom Hardy and Joel Edgarton weren't nominated for their roles in Warrior, because they were pretty damn awesome in that film. I think they deserved a nom more than Leonardo DiCaprio. I'm a huge fan of DiCaprio but his performance in J. Edgar wasn't his best. Brad Pitt will end up taking home the award for Moneyball though. It was great to see Bridesmaids and The Help get a nomination for best ensemble cast. It will be interesting to see who takes home the award on this list, and how many of them will make their way to the Oscars.
Who would you like to see take home the award?
