Sunderland take on Reading this afternoon with fans at the Stadium of Light likely to be buzzing over the securing of two big new signings yesterday.
The Black Cats completed on Friday the signings of England winger Adam Johnson and Wolves striker Stephen Fletcher for deals reported by Goal.com to be worth at least £20 million combined.
25-year-old forward Fletcher could make his Wearside debut today, though the availability of Adam Johnson is less clear as his deal wasn’t confirmed until late last night.
Definitely missing for Sunderland are defender Phil Bardsley (ankle) and midfielder David Vaughn (ankle) who miss out through injury. Wes Brown (knee ligaments) has an outside chance of making the bench.
For Reading, boss Brian McDermott has no fresh injury doubts following the club’s midweek 4-2 thriller at Stamfrod Bridge.
Still missing for them are Jem Karacan (broken ankle), Jimmy Kebe (hamstring), though veteran...

Sunderland boss Martin O’Neill is looking to captialise on Liverpool’s indecision by making a move for Wigan’s star midfielder Mohamed Diame.
The Senegalese midfielder who turns 25-years-old next month is currently a free agent after letting his contract expire at Wigan and recently actually looked like a dream move to Merseyside was close. The player had a meeting with former Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish before the Kop legend was axed which halted his move to Anfield.
With Liverpool tied up securing Brendan Rodgers as their new manager this week, Diame has been forgotten about and Liverpool and he may not be a player that is in Rodgers’ sights, thus allowing Sunderland to come in and snap the player up.
Diame has attracted interest from La Liga with Spanish side Real Betis interested but it is believed he wants to stay in the Premier League and is expected...

Team news ahead of West Brom’s game against Sunderland this afternoon, the Baggies looking for their first home win since November against the in-form Black Cats. Though West Brom have been riding on a big high in the past fortnight after their emphatic win over near-by rivals Wolves last time out.
Keith Andrews could make his full debut for the Baggies today. He joined West Brom on a deadline day free transfer from Blackburn Rovers last month and impressed as a scoring sub in the 5-1 win over former club Wolves in the Black Country derby last week.
Andrews will likely play instead of Paul Scharner, who is missing with a rib injury. Baggies captain Chris Brunk is battling back to fitness after suffering an ankle injury but Zoltan Gera is still a long-term absentee with a knee injury.
For Sunderland, striker Nicklas Bendtner should return after recovering from...

Team news ahead of Saturday’s early evening Fa Cup Fifth round tie between Sunderland and Arsenal from the Stadium of the Light. Kick-off time time is 5.15pm and the game is screening live in the UK on ITV 1.
For Sunderland, Lee Cattermole is fighting to be back in the starting line up after recovering from his hamstring knock and could be in contention.
Nicklas Bendtner has got over his knock and his back in training but obviously as he is on-loan from the Gunners he is ineligible to play against his parent club.
Wes Brown (knee), Titus Bramble (achilles/calf) and David Vaughn (ankle) are still sidelined for Martin O’Neill’s men.
For Arsenal, centre back pairings Laurent Koscielny (knee) and Per Mertesacker are out, the latter suffering an ankle knock this week in the defeat to AC Milan that could keep him out for a lengthy spell.

Team news ahead of Saturday afternoon’s Premier League tie at the Britannia Stadium between 8th and 9th place Sunderland and Stoke City, which carries a 3pm kick-off time. The game is not being televised on any channel in the UK.
Stoke City will give a late fitness test to Matthew Etherington who has missed two days of training this week because of a virus.
Potters boss Tony Pulis otherwise has no more injury concerns with Mamady Sidibe the only playing missing, a long-term absentee
Sunderland are still without key players captain Lee Cattermole (hamstring), Wes Brown (brown), David Vaughn (ankle ligaments) and striker Nicklas Bendtner.
Defenders Matthew Killgallon (ankle) and Titus Bramble (achilles, foot) are still sidelined, but that could lead to new signing Sotirios Kyrgiakos, the ex-Liverpool center back on loan from Wolfsburg, to make his debut for the Black Cats. Former England international left back Wayne Bridge...

A mid table clash between 10th and 11th place as Sunderland welcome Norwich City to the Stadium of Light for tonight’s 8pm Premier League encounter.
Team News
Sunderland manager Martin O’Neill is unable to call upon defender Wes Brown (medial ligament) and midfielder David Vaughn (ankle ligament) who look to be on the sidelines for several weeks after picking up injuries in Sunday’s Fa Cup tie against Middlesbrough. Captain Lee Cattermole looks like he could miss another game with his troubling hamstring problem.
Nicklas Bendtner is still on the treatment table with a fractured nose, leaving O’Neill sweating on being able to call upon Connor Wickham and Frazier Campbell, neither of which are 100% fit, the latter just make from 17 months on the sidelines with a long term knee injury.
Their opponents Norwich go into today’s match with no fresh injury concerns and even should have...

Sir. Alex Ferguson celebrates 25 years (as long as I’ve been alive!) as manager of Manchester United today going head-to-head with one of his best ever defenders, Steve Bruce, who brings his battered but still surviving Sunderland side to Old Trafford for a 3pm Premier League kick off.
Ferguson knows what a leader he is coming up against today. It was his battling, winning spirit and leadership that convinced Ferguson to make Bruce captain of the Red Devils where Bruce led them to their first league title in 26 years back in 1993. His goals were handy two…. a brace in a game against Sheffield Wednesday just weeks before the end of the season saw them take top spot above Villa and nobody was able to catch them after that.
Though as never-say-die as Bruce’s mentality on the pitch was, amazingly in 17 attempts he has never been able to manage a side to beat Fergie.

We have been humming and harring here at WhatCulture! about whether to run this story all week as when it comes to our exclusives from The Football Insider, we always make sure they are verified and checked before we publish them. And our track record is 100% solid as you will have seen from the various news outlets who have taken our stories into the wider media and in some cases, got official quotes from the club.
But this one we couldn’t get absolute confirmation on but let me just talk you briefly through the run of events of the past week for you to make up your own mind…
We were told earlier in the week that there was genuine interest from Steve Bruce in taking the free transfer listed Joey Barton to Newcastle’s fierce North East rivals Sunderland before the end of the transfer window. Having made...
