'Riddick 4' Update "Incoming..." Vin Diesel Teases
Image
Action movie superstar Vin Diesel has teased an imminent, and long-awaited, update regarding his highly anticipated science fiction sequel, Riddick 4. Officially titled Riddick: Furya, the sci-fi action follow-up will explore the mysterious origins of Diesel’s title character, who started life as a mysterious convict way, way back in the 2000 action sci-fi outing Pitch Black. Since then, Riddick has become so much more, with the lore being expanded in a pair of sequels, The Chronicles of Riddick and Riddick, with Diesel hoping (and teasing) that the world of Riddick will become his next major franchise following the conclusion of the Fast and Furious series.

Diesel has now taken to social media to share an image of Riddick showing off his shiny eyeballs, teasing that something is “Incoming...” While that’s all he’s offered for now, with Riddick: Furya having commenced filming back in August last year, it stands...

The film has been in production for some time, so we might be in for a treat as a teaser might be on its way.

The 15 Worst Movie Sequels Ever
Image
If you think sequels are bad now, you should have seen them a couple decades ago. Today, franchises are so ubiquitous that the studios take time to get them as right as possible, securing the original stars and trying to write stories that equal their predecessors. At the dawn of the blockbuster era, however, sequels were seen as cheap cash cows to be rushed out as quickly as possible while people still remembered the original. Nowadays, we know that nostalgia can overcome most of that and keep some properties around forever.

If you're wondering why your least favorite "Star Wars, "Star Trek," or "Superman" isn't on this list, it's simple: when you have an actor associated with an iconic character who continues to commit to the role, it elevates even "Superman IV: The Quest for Peace." It's hard to hate a movie that has Christopher Reeve in the tights, or Leonard Nimoy in pointy ears,...

Kevin Costner's Waterworld Almost Had A Totally Different Soundtrack
Image
Filmmaking undeniably requires craft, but it also requires something additional that is less easy to teach, harder to pin down, and impossible to replicate. In short, it requires a kind of magic, an alchemy between the collaborators, the material, and the time period in which the movie is made. Sure, most creative people who make films as a career learn little tricks and shortcuts in order to help facilitate this, but ultimately (and to the continual annoyance of the studio bean counters), it happens or it doesn't. Just as the right actor can elevate a character and the wrong sound effect can ruin a scene, a film's original score is a key ingredient in making this alchemical mixture of cinema. While the covenant between a composer and a director tends to produce just the right kind of score the film needs, sometimes the balance is off.

While it isn't all that common,...

Vin Diesel Quietly Reveals First Footage From 'Riddick: Furya'
Image
Action star Vin Diesel has quietly revealed the first footage from his upcoming (and long-awaited) sequel, Riddick 4. Officially titled Riddick: Furya, the sci-fi action follow-up will explore the mysterious origins of Diesel’s title character, who started life as a mysterious intergalactic convict way back in 2000’s Pitch Black. The lore has since greatly expanded, with Riddick: Furya expected to bring back on of Diesel’s best characters for a cinematic epic.

While the footage doesn’t show too much (you can check it out below), it does find Diesel back in the black goggles and sporting the kind of look of repressed rage that the character is known for. Set to be written and directed once again by David Twohy alongside creators Jim and Ken Wheat, the sci-fi action sequel not only finds Diesel as the lead but also as a producer on the project. As well as this brief glimpse,...

Vin Diesel’s Sci-Fi Action Movie 'Pitch Black' Is Now Streaming on Prime Video
Image
The divisive sci-fi movie that made Vin Diesel an action hero has now found a new streaming home. Released back in 2000, Pitch Black features a star-making turn from Diesel, and launched the now fan-favorite Riddick franchise, introducing Diesel as the mysterious Richard B. Riddick, a former soldier-turned-mercenary-turned-criminal who finds himself crash landing on an alien planet inhabited by monsters who thrive in the dark. Oh, and an eclipse is coming.

Directed by David Twohy and co-written by Twohy and brothers Ken and Jim Wheat, Pitch Black features Radha Mitchell, Cole Hauser, Claudia Black, and Keith David as some of the other crew members who come to rely on Diesel’s untrustworthy antihero to get them off the planet alive. Which he may just be able to do thanks to his “shine jobbed” eyes, which enable him to see in the dark. Pitch Black is now available to stream on Prime Video in the U.

This Underrated, Almost Forgotten Vin Diesel Sci-Fi Creature Feature Proves the Importance of Good World Building
Image
There are few movie stars as synonymous with 2000s action cinema as Vin Diesel. While his tenure as Dominic Toretto will soon come to a doubtlessly glorious close in the eleventh and (supposedly) final installment of the Fast and Furious franchise, the world would be remiss to forget his pre-Fast turn in the Riddick films. Pitch Black, the first of three to feature the character, gave Diesel and writer/director David Twohy a gritty and dusty sandbox to play in.

Director D.J. Caruso Reveals the New Film Script That Brought Vin Diesel's Daughter to Tears
Image
Vin Diesel is (fast and) furiously moving through a bevy of new creative projects. There’s Fast X: Part 2, the second installment of Fast X, which arrives in 2026. Meanwhile, Mary director D.J. Caruso, who worked with Diesel on xXx: Return of Xander Cage, is reportedly taking on another Diesel franchise offering, xXx 4, which has yet to head into production. Recently, Caruso and Diesel haven't hidden their immense appreciation for each other.

In early 2024, Diesel captured attention after posting an Instagram comment about Caruso, mentioning how his daughter, Hania Riley Sinclair, was moved to tears when she read a script Caruso gave him to consider. “My oldest daughter read the script that D.J. sent to me, thinking that it would fall into The Pacifier bracket,” the star wrote. “She cried… I asked her why she cried, and she said because the story of a brother and sister rang true for her,...

Most Sci-Fi Fans Missed This Inventive 28-Year-Old Alien Thriller
Image
Quick Links The Plot of 1996's The Arrival, Explained The Arrival Was the Opposite of 1996's Biggest Sci-Fi Spectacle Why Science Fiction Fans Should Watch This Old-School Thriller

There are countless science fiction movies released throughout the decades that have made major impressions on the genre and audiences. Usually, these were either critical or financial hits, with some of them even being a bit of both. On the other hand, one Charlie Sheen vehicle that flew under the radar at the box office is still worth revisiting, despite having not been given a chance when it was released.

Not to be confused with a similarly-titled Amy Adams movie Arrival released twenty years later, The Arrival was a 1996 thriller that took a look at a conspiratorial alien invasion. Feeling almost like a companion to other blockbuster sci-fi movies of the era, the movie sadly didn't get its due when it came out.

Vin Diesels Rotten 2003 Action Thriller to Stream for Free in December
Image
Fast and Furious star Vin Diesel has carved out a legacy as a blockbuster action hero, but not all of his efforts in the genre have been as well-received as that multi-billion-dollar box office franchise. And now, one of those efforts is getting ready to stream for free. The movie in question is Diesels 2003 vigilante action thriller A Man Apart, which caused a pretty major divide between audiences and critics upon release, and finds the Riddick star leading the way as an undercover DEA agent on a violent vendetta.

Directed by F. Gary Gray of Law Abiding Citizen, Straight Outta Compton, and The Fate of the Furious fame, A Man Apart was criticized for its clich approach, as well as its inability to balance both action and drama in a satisfactory way. All of which resulted in a score of just 10% on Rotten Tomatoes. On the flip side, audiences were more taken with Diesels brooding,...

Kevin Costner Was Massively Upstaged in the Action Epic Waterworld
Image
With his award-winning performance in Yellowstone and supporting roles in films such as Man of Steel, Kevin Costner appears to be experiencing something of a career renaissance. The entertainment industry can sometimes be fickle, especially regarding box-office disappointments that arrive on the heels of critical and commercial successes. Through the 1990s, Costner was one of the biggest stars in Hollywood and one who also achieved notable success as a director, receiving two Academy Awards for Dances with Wolves. Despite the rising star power that Costner had generated early on in his career, two major disappointments, Waterworld and The Postman, saw it plummet almost as quickly.

In theory, Waterworld appeared like it could have been a huge success. One of many summer blockbusters that cater to the desire for action on a large scale and is set in a dystopian future where the fears of climate change have become manifest, with...

10 Movie Franchises That Ended With the Worst Possible Film
Image
Hollywood has made sequels a core part of the success of key movie franchises since the film industry's beginning, with movies like Jaws, Star Wars, and Die Hard earning numerous continuations. Movie series go through rough spots, with genres like horror particularly experiencing incredibly weak entries, despite continuing on years after. Some franchises have the unfortunate distinction of ending on their worst entry, whether a planned trilogy that disappointed audiences with their finale or films so bad they tanked a series' future.

Seeing a franchise end on its weakest entry isn't always unexpected, and audiences have unfortunately been trained to lower expectations for the average sequel. These films can lose the respect of audiences for a variety of reasons, from losing their main cast and abandoning a core premise to bad direction and simply failing to deliver a satisfying ending to a saga. While no franchise is ever truly dead,...

Vin Diesel Could Have Gone Broke Self-Funding Riddick
Image
Quick Links Riddick Was a Passion Project for Vin Diesel Vin Diesel Said He Would've Been 'Homeless' if Riddick Failed

Including his cameo in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, Vin Diesel has played the character Dominic Toretto a whopping nine times. And, yet, that's not the character from his filmography that he holds closest to his heart. It's actually Richard B. Riddick, the scene-stealing role in 2000's Pitch Black, which was released one year before the first Fast and the Furious movie had even sped onto the big screen.

After catching Stephen Spielberg's attention with 1997's Strays, Diesel got his first big-budget movie role in Saving Private Ryan. Then, he voiced the title character in The Iron Giant and co-starred with Giovanni Ribisi in Boiler Room. But Pitch Black, which still had Diesel as a supporting actor, allowed him to dive into a truly unique, layered character and make him his own.

Alien's Most Controversial Sequel Is the Most Underrated Entry In the Franchise
Image
Quick Links Alien 3 Had One of the Most Troubled Productions in the Franchise Alien 3's Tone Was an Improvement Over Aliens Why Alien 3 Is Better Than Most Fans Remember Alien 3 Was Better Than Many of the Other Alien Movies

The Alien franchise has been facehugging audiences for 45 years, with the series synonymous with science fiction body horror. While it's largely been comprised of acclaimed movies, there have also been a few notable misfires. Ironically, one of the more contentious entries might also be one of the best.

Alien 3 was fairly controversial when it was first released, with most seeing it as a major step down from what came before. This reflected a troubled production cycle that resulted in a much different product than what the director intended to make. Despite these issues, the movie is far more deserving of praise than it is of criticism,...

Dominic Toretto's Superhero Powers Totally Changed How I See This Other Vin Diesel Character
Image
Now that Vin Diesel has pretty much turned Fast & Furious Dominic Toretto into a full-blown superhero, Im less excited about his true sci-fi hero, Riddick. Diesel is currently hard at work on a fourth Riddick movie, Riddick: Furya, which has been in various stages of development for over a decade now. David Twohy, the writer-director behind the first three films, has once again penned the script and will once again direct the project. Theres no confirmed release date for Riddick: Furya, but Diesel has teased that itll explore Riddicks origin story.

Ive always thought it was really cool that Diesel leveraged Universals desire to have him make a cameo appearance in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift to score the rights to the Riddick character. This has meant that Diesel has complete ownership of the Riddick franchise and, as a result, complete creative control of his big-screen outings.

What Went Wrong With David Fincher's Alien 3, According To Sigourney Weaver
Image
"Alien 3" is one of the more controversial "Alien" movies. For one thing, the development of the project went through fits and starts. For another, David Fincher, who made his feature directorial debut on the sequel, had notorious behind-the-scenes problems and has more or less disowned the movie entirely. And then there's the fact that the film is unapologetically bleak, including an opening that kills off fan-favorite characters like space Marine Hicks and precocious child Newt. Just to seal the deal, the movie then ends by killing off Sigourney Weaver's Ripley, who was the franchise's main character.

All that said, the film still has its fans. But even when you take into account the fact that "Alien 3" has its supporters, it's not unfair to say the film is flawed and not held in as high regard as Ridley Scott's original "Alien" or James Cameron's blockbuster sequel "Aliens.

Vin Diesel shares behind-the-scenes images as Riddick: Furya heads into production
Image
Although eleven years have passed since the release of the third film in the Riddick franchise, star Vin Diesel has always kept hope alive that he would someday be re-teaming with franchise mastermind David Twohy on another Riddick adventure. Back in May, we learned that Riddick: Furya was scheduled to start filming on August 26th – and during the build-up to the start of production, Diesel has been sharing behind-the-scenes images and video on social media that show him getting back into character as Riddick. You can check them out at the bottom of this article.

Riddick: Furya will be a continuation of the sci-fi action franchise that began with the creature feature Pitch Black back in 2000. That was followed by the epic The Chronicles of Riddick, which underperformed at the box office in 2004, so they reduced the scope for the third film, Riddick, which was released in 2013. “They took out almost all of those lighter elements”: Kevin Costner Could Have Had His Own Mad Max Had He Not Hijacked the Original Idea That Turned Into a Disaster
Image
You might want to smash your head on the wall after learning about all the journeys that led to Waterworld’s creation, a tale rich with sorts of twists and turns. The tumultuous trip of the film’s high seas production is storied, but with the tense involvement of two Kevins—director Kevin Reynolds and lead Kevin Costner—the astronomical costs and the perilous sets, are not as often recounted as its origin story.

The production of Waterworld was just drawn out; the script was initially penned by Peter Rader in the 1980s. Around this period, a number of tales served as inspiration for the movie, including those of Mad Max. The film had already been rewritten multiple times by the time Reynolds and Costner were attached.

Vin Diesel’s Riddick: Furya To Film Later This Year
Image
You might think that Vin Diesel would be mostly focused on finishing the Fast & Furious franchise at this point, with the reportedly last movie still sitting in the development garage. But it appears another of his recognizable characters has overtaken Dom Toretto in the race to screens – Richard B. Riddick. Riddick: Furya is now in line to shoot in August.

The Riddick character originated in 2000's Pitch Black, which saw him and a group of survivors of a crashed spaceship tackling bloodthirsty critters that hunt by night — as the planet they're stranded on is thrust into a long night by an eclipse. He was further explored by 2004's The Chronicles Of Riddick and 2013's Riddick.

Writer/director David Twohy, who has been on the Riddick journey alongside Diesel since the first movie, is back for Furya, which sees the character finally return to his home world, a place he barely remembers at this point.

“Finally, true space kino has returned”: Vin Diesel Set to Return for Riddick 4 After Saving the Franchise With a Fast and Furious Cameo
Image
While Vin Diesel is known as the protagonist of the Fast & Furious franchise, he had his breakthrough with the sci-fi film franchise The Chronicles of Riddick. Beginning with Pitch Black, the franchise spawned two more sequels, short films, and video games. Diesel even turned producer of the threequel after trading the rights for the franchise for a cameo in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift.

The makers have now confirmed that a fourth film is in development. Diesel would be reprising his role as the mercenary Riddick in the film titled Riddick: Furya. The film would reportedly follow the character as he goes back to his homeworld, which finds its citizens fighting against a new monster.

Riddick 4 | Vin Diesel set to shoot movie in August
Vin Diesel
Vin Diesel will be back for Riddick: Furya, ahead of filming Fast & Furious 11: more on the story right here.

Outside of the original Pitch Black movie, that introduced Vin Diesel as the character of Riddick on the big screen, there’s an argument that the terrific videogame The Chronicles Of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay is as good as the franchise has got on screen.

Certainly 2004’s mega-budget The Chronicles Of Riddick stumbled a little, and then a third movie, 2013’s Riddick, financially was more rewarding but still not top tier.

Nonetheless, Vin Diesel is not discouraged, and he’s reuniting with director David Twohy for a long-mooted fourth cinematic adventure for the character of Riddick. The film in question will be called Riddick: Furya, and the assumption was that it was going to slot in around production for the upcoming Fast & Furious 11.

Last week though, we learned that...

Vin Diesel is set to return as the titular character in a new installment of the franchise titled "Riddick: Furya," with David Twohy again serving as director. According to a press release, "Furya" will begin production on August 26, 2024, with filming set to take place in Germany, Spain, and the U.K. This brings the project full circle, as Diesel and Twohy have been trying to make it for some time. Whenever Vin Diesel wants to get away from family and live more than a quarter mile at a time, he revisits his other franchises. This comes just as director Louis Leterrer confirmed that the eleventh Fast & Furious movie will not begin production until next year, which leaves Diesel open.

“Riddick finally returns to his home world, a place he barely remembers and one he fears might be left in ruins. But there he finds other Furyans fighting for their existence against a new monster. And some of these Furyans are more like Riddick than he could have ever imagined.

Vin Diesel’s New ‘Riddick’ Movie Moving Forward for Fall Shoot
Image
Vin Diesel is officially returning to the world of Pitch Black and galactic antihero Riddick, the sci-fi action franchise that gave the actor his first major leading role.

Riddick: Furya, which was announced in February 2023, is now moving full steam ahead toward an Aug. 26 shoot date, producers announced Monday. Diesel stars and produces the film, which reteams him with David Twohy, the filmmaker who has directed all of the franchise’s previous entries. Furya will film in locales such as Germany, Spain and the U.K.

Pitch Black, released by Universal in 2000, introduced Diesel as a captured criminal who, along with several other passengers, crash lands on a planet where sundown unleashes feral monsters. While the first one was made for $23 million, 2004’s The Chronicles of Riddick cost over $100 million, as the movie went big in scope. The route failed to excite audiences and it seemed like the movie series was over.

‘Critters 2’: Still the Definitive Easter Horror Movie 36 Years Later
Image
Christmas and Halloween reign supreme in terms of holiday-themed horror to the point that every other holiday pales in comparison when it comes to horror offerings. Easter does have a few selections to offer, but many of them don’t lean into any familiar holiday motifs. Then there are the horror films that get lumped in simply because the villain bears likeness to the Easter bunny. It can be slim pickings. That’s okay, though, because we really only need one solid horror movie to celebrate Easter with. One that isn’t afraid to spill some Easter bunny blood.

Critters 2: The Main Course is that definitive Easter horror movie.

Co-written by David Twohy (Warlock, Pitch Black) and director Mick Garris (The Stand, Masters of Horror), Critters 2 makes clever use of the holiday as a means to implement those remaining Crite eggs stashed away in a barn from the end of Critters.

Before the MCU, Chris Hemsworth Was on a Very Different Path
Image
MCU launched actors like Hemsworth into stardom after smaller, darker roles. Hemsworth's intense performance in A Perfect Getaway showcased his early range. Despite early success in MCU, Hemsworth's prior roles displayed his versatility in acting craft.

When plainly put, the Marvel Cinematic Universe helped to make massive stars out of celebrities who were previously just drifting in and out of movies. For example — after starring in many, many films since 1970 that either barely passed at the box office (regarding ticket sales) or flat-out failed, Robert Downey Jr. flew to the sky with his role as Tony Stark in 2008's Iron Man.

Right before donning the role of the red, white, and blue hero in 2011's Captain America, Chris Evans was plagued with a line of mediocrely successful films (including a dead-on-arrival romantic comedy that almost ruined his career). Although they were successful in their own right, Tom Hiddleston was in...

Six Deep Sea Thrillers to Watch Ahead of Renny Harlin’s ‘Deep Water’
Image
I find it ironic how despite existing on a planet where pretty much every living thing originated in the ocean, one of humanity’s most widespread fears is thalassophobia – the fear of the deep ocean. Whether it’s some form of genetic memory that continues to haunt our species or a natural reaction to witnessing one of the deadliest ecosystems in the world, it’s no surprise storytellers have been taking advantage of this fear for millennia.

And while Jaws obviously dominates the conversation when it comes to underwater horror in film, there are still some intrepid filmmakers that dare to explore other kinds of sea-borne thrills. For example, Deep Blue Sea director Renny Harlin’s upcoming Deep Water looks like it’s going to take us on another roller-coaster ride directly into shark-infested waters. However, since there’s still no official release date, we’ve decided to come up...
