Riddick, the scene-stealing role in 2000's Pitch Black, which was released one year before the first Fast and the Furious movie had even sped onto the big screen.

After catching Stephen Spielberg's attention with 1997's Strays, Diesel got his first big-budget movie role in Saving Private Ryan. Then, he voiced the title character in The Iron Giant and co-starred with Giovanni Ribisi in Boiler Room. But Pitch Black, which still had Diesel as a supporting actor, allowed him to dive into a truly unique, layered character and make him his own.

David Twohy’s Riddick 4: Furya, the latest chapter in the Vin Diesel-starring Riddick saga, has been awarded €2m in production support by Germany’s Fff Bayern fund for international feature films and series. It is the maximum amount that can be awarded to a single project.

Most of the principal photography will take place at the Penzing Studios in Bavaria, with further filming taking place in Spain and the UK.

Now that Vin Diesel has pretty much turned Fast & Furious Dominic Toretto into a full-blown superhero, Im less excited about his true sci-fi hero, Riddick. Diesel is currently hard at work on a fourth Riddick movie, Riddick: Furya, which has been in various stages of development for over a decade now. David Twohy, the writer-director behind the first three films, has once again penned the script and will once again direct the project. Theres no confirmed release date for Riddick: Furya, but Diesel has teased that itll explore Riddicks origin story.

Ive always thought it was really cool that Diesel leveraged Universals desire to have him make a cameo appearance in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift to score the rights to the Riddick character. This has meant that Diesel has complete ownership of the Riddick franchise and, as a result, complete creative control of his big-screen outings.

"Alien 3" is one of the more controversial "Alien" movies. For one thing, the development of the project went through fits and starts. For another, David Fincher, who made his feature directorial debut on the sequel, had notorious behind-the-scenes problems and has more or less disowned the movie entirely. And then there's the fact that the film is unapologetically bleak, including an opening that kills off fan-favorite characters like space Marine Hicks and precocious child Newt. Just to seal the deal, the movie then ends by killing off Sigourney Weaver's Ripley, who was the franchise's main character.

All that said, the film still has its fans. But even when you take into account the fact that "Alien 3" has its supporters, it's not unfair to say the film is flawed and not held in as high regard as Ridley Scott's original "Alien" or James Cameron's blockbuster sequel "Aliens.

Although eleven years have passed since the release of the third film in the Riddick franchise, star Vin Diesel has always kept hope alive that he would someday be re-teaming with franchise mastermind David Twohy on another Riddick adventure. Back in May, we learned that Riddick: Furya was scheduled to start filming on August 26th – and during the build-up to the start of production, Diesel has been sharing behind-the-scenes images and video on social media that show him getting back into character as Riddick. The tumultuous trip of the film’s high seas production is storied, but with the tense involvement of two Kevins—director Kevin Reynolds and lead Kevin Costner—the astronomical costs and the perilous sets, are not as often recounted as its origin story.

Writer/director David Twohy, who has been on the Riddick journey alongside Diesel since the first movie, is back for Furya, which sees the character finally return to his home world, a place he barely remembers at this point.

While Vin Diesel is known as the protagonist of the Fast & Furious franchise, he had his breakthrough with the sci-fi film franchise The Chronicles of Riddick. Beginning with Pitch Black, the franchise spawned two more sequels, short films, and video games. Diesel even turned producer of the threequel after trading the rights for the franchise for a cameo in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift.

The makers have now confirmed that a fourth film is in development. Diesel would be reprising his role as the mercenary Riddick in the film titled Riddick: Furya. Riddick: Furya is officially moving forward. A production start date for the fourth entry in the Vin Diesel-led science fiction franchise has just been announced.

According to Deadline, Diesel will begin production on Furya on Aug. 26, 2024, with shooting set to occur in Germany, Spain, and the United Kingdom. Diesel will produce for One Race Films, alongside Samantha Vincent. Thorsten Schumacher for Rocket Science and Lars Sylvest for Thank You Studios will also produce alongside Joe Neurauter. Rocket Science, which repped international rights, has already completed worldwide cornerstone pre-sales. A North American distributor has not been confirmed yet. The first film was released by USA Films, while the next two were distributed by Universal Pictures.
