A missed opportunity to tell what should be a captivating real-life disaster tale that is instead plodding, scattershot, and lacking in dramatic impetus. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

In 2010, as you may recall from the news, 33 men were trapped thousands of feet underground when the Chilean gold mine they were working in collapsed. They had minimal supplies, and, at first, no way of even letting those aboveground know that they were still alive. When they finally emerged 69 days later, it was the result of a global effort, and was seen on TV around the planet by more than a billion people. Basically, it’s The Martian times 33, except real. Mountains May Depart: Riggen Reenacts Devastating Chilean Mining Collapse
Mexican director Patricia Riggen makes a curious departure with her third feature, The 33, a studio backed reenactment of the infamous Chilean mining collapse projected worldwide by the media. The world watched in eerie anticipation as thirty-three men waited patiently to be excavated from the bowels of the earth, stuck for an astounding sixty-nine days together in a mining shelter reservoir with a space allotted for thirty. It was one of the most notable world news headlines in 2010, and with all of the men eventually brought to safety in mid-October, they also provided inspiration for Halloween group themed costumes everywhere. If such a move was moderately silly (or tactless) at the time, this Hollywood treatment seems equally exploitative as it mines for thrills akin to the glut of disaster themed studio extravaganzas of the 1970s. Riggen seems committed to humanizing these...

Chicago – In the art of film, the best way to approach a based-on-truth story – where the outcome is well known – is to create a point-of-view vision for the narrative. The story of “The 33,” the trapped miners from Chile who were rescued with worldwide attention, is a prime example of that vision.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
Director Patricia Riggen and the screenplay adapters – Mikko Alanne, Craig Borten and Michael Thomas – fashioned a timeline for the rescue events that added impact and interest, both down with the trapped miners and up on the surface. There are some clichés, but they exist to add to the story, and give some presence to the situation. Overall, the film is engaging, and very earnestly performed. Despite knowing the outcome, it still manages to provide a sense of what it was like, which is about as successful as this type of film can be.

Chicago – When a disaster strikes, often the most unlikely people will become the primary responders. This is the premise for “The 33,” a new feature film about the Chilean mining collapse in 2010, which trapped 33 men for 69 days. The film goes deep inside the event, and is directed with due respect by Patricia Riggen.
Ms. Riggen was born in Mexico, and initially studied journalism, until completing her Masters degree in directing and screenwriting at Columbia University in New York City. While in school, she completed two short documentaries, “The Cornfield” (2002) and the film-festival-award-winning “Family Portrait” (2004). Her narrative film debut was the popular “Under the Same Moon” (2007), featuring America Ferrara. She directed “Lemonade Mouth” in 2011 for the Disney Channel, and “Girl in Progress” (2012) before landing the assignment for “The 33.”

From Alcon Entertainment and Phoenix Pictures comes the unforgettable true story of The 33.
In 2010, the eyes of the world turned to Chile, where 33 miners had been buried alive by the catastrophic explosion and collapse of a 100-year-old gold and copper mine. Over the next 69 days, an international team worked night and day in a desperate attempt to rescue the trapped men as their families and friends, as well as millions of people globally, waited and watched anxiously for any sign of hope. But 200 stories beneath the surface, in the suffocating heat and with tensions rising, provisions—and time—were quickly running out.
A story of resilience, personal transformation and triumph of the human spirit, the film takes us to the Earth’s darkest depths, revealing the psyches of the men trapped in the mine, and depicting the courage of both the miners and their families who refused to give up.

Alcon Entertainment has inked a November 13, 2015 release date for "The 33" via Warner Bros., per the companies' longterm motion picture agreement. Oscar-nominated producer Mike Medavoy ("Black Swan"), who brought the project to Alcon, worked closely with families and rescuers to tell this 2010 story of 33 miners who were trapped half a mile underground for 69 days after the collapse of a 121-year-old copper-gold mine. Starring Antonio Banderas, Lou Diamond Phillips, Rodrigo Santoro and Juliette Binoche as one of the entombed miner's sisters, the film is entirely in English, with Chilean accents, which should secure its international appeal (while annoying others). Shot in working mines in Colombia and Chile, the film marks Patricia Riggen's feature film followup to 2007's "Under the Same Moon." "The 33" is written by Mikko Alanne, Craig Borten ("Dallas Buyers Club") and Michael Thomas from José Rivera's...

Alcatraz was a J. J. Abrams series that didn’t quite take flight. It may have aired on Fox, but today’s casting news features an Alcatraz reunion taking place on the set of a new CBS pilot called The Ordained.
One half of the Alcatraz mini-reunion is a Kiwi (from New Zealand). The other half is a giant? We’re talking about Sam Neill and Jorge Garcia. Garcia has been appearing on ABC’s Once Upon a Time as, well, the Giant.
In the CBS drama pilot, The Ordained, Boardwalk Empire‘s Charlie Cox, who also played an unsavory Duke early on in Downtown Abbey, will star as the son of a “Kennedy-esque” family who chooses to leave the priesthood to become a lawyer. Why? His sister is a politician and the target of some sort of assassination plot. I’m not sure how one thing prevents the other,...

Director: Lee Tamahori.
Writers: Michael Thomas and Latif Yahia (book).
Cast: Dominic Cooper, Ludivine Sagnier, Mem Ferda and Raad Rawi.
The big question in the minds of many fans of Dominic Cooper’s works is why is his name not on nomination lists of this year's awards show? Most lists are out, a few have come and gone, and the Oscars reflect an attitude of snubbing this mighty fine actor. His work in The Devil's Double is superb. He plays two contrasting types of characters with an easy push of a button. One is a very calm and controlled dilettante and the other a violent brat who can scream the Incredible Hulk down.
And the cinematography used to blend his own body-double into the scenes is impeccably flawless. Even more insightful is the question this film brings up: can anyone turn a blind eye to the misfit behavior committed by another?...

"The Devil's Double" is an impressive feat on a lot of levels, but there's no doubt that it's the work of actor Dominic Cooper as two wildly different roles — the psychotic son of Saddam Hussein, Uday, and his reluctant body double, Latif Yahia — that absolutely sells the movie. Even though the acting effort was a fantastic success on Cooper's part, there were some initial doubts about how the "Devil's Double" production team would be able to pull it off.
"Even as I was writing this, I was thinking, 'I don't know how the f--- we're going to do this,'" confesses writer Michael Thomas in this exclusive clip from the "Devil's Double" DVD, in stores on Tuesday (November 22). "How are you going to get a performance out of one guy, then another performance out of the same guy at the same time, when they're in practically every single scene?"

In our writers' favourite film series, Paul Owen explains why the Beatles bromance between John Lennon and Stuart Sutcliffe strikes a chord
• Not swayed by this perspective? Twist and shout in the comments below
Backbeat tells the story of the Beatles' pre-fame Hamburg days, focusing on Stuart Sutcliffe, the band's magnetically sexy original bassist, and his relationships with John Lennon and the beautiful and exotic German photographer Astrid Kirchherr. It's a great premise, and director and co-writer Iain Softley tells the tale with all the smart dramatic pacing, period detail and musical verve you might hope for. But, perhaps more surprisingly, he also creates a complex and emotionally sophisticated portrayal of love, friendship and attraction.
Softley hews to received wisdom in his presentation of the Beatles: John is talented, scabrous and aggressive, Paul weak and duplicitous, George third among equals (Ringo makes only a brief appearance). But his portrayal of...

This flashy thriller, an English-speaking co-production between Belgium, the Netherlands, Malta and the United States shot partly in Jordan, is a fictionalised biography of Latif Yahia, the hapless double for Saddam Hussein's elder son Uday from the Iraq-Iran war to the first Gulf war. The screenwriter, Michael Thomas, handled similarly salacious political material with greater skill in Scandal, the 1988 study of the John Profumo/Christine Keeler affair, and while the film is fairly entertaining, it has nothing new to say about Iraq and little that is original about doppelgangers. Dominic Cooper, however, gives a convincing, at times truly chilling dual performance as Latif and Uday, making an effective distinction between the man of honour, forced to assume another's identity to protect his family, and the sadistic libertine and homicidal psychopath who becomes his puppeteer.

Dominic Cooper has a dual starring role in The Devil's Double, released in the UK by Icon Film Distribution on August 10.
The actor can also be seen in Marvel's current release Captain America: The First Avenger, in which he plays Iron Man's father Howard Stark, and was previously in Tamara Drewe, An Education and The Duchess.
As The Devil's Double gears up to hit cinemas, we have a video report in which Cooper, the real double Latif Yahia and Dominic's co-star Ludivine Sagnier introduce the UK premiere of the film. Lee Tamahori's The Devil's Double is one of the most disturbing films. However, Tamahori shows with intelligence the daily horrors of Saddam Hussein's regime.
The film is based on the life of Latif Yahia (Dominic Cooper), a military officer. He's forced to become the "fiday", a body double, for Uday Hussein (also played by Cooper), the eldest son of president Saddam Hussein (Phillip Quast). To prevent the assassination of Uday, Latif must learn to walk and talk like Uday. Moreover, he must forget his family. During the invasion of Kuwait in 1991, Latif must pass off as Uday to boost the Iraqi troops' morale.
As time goes by, Latif sees that Uday is a devil. The son of president Hussein has an appetite for sex, easy women, school girls, drugs and violence. Latif finds solace in the arms of Sarrab (Ludivine Sagnier), Uday's mistress. However, Latif eventually plans to flee Iraq.

British actor Mem Ferda (Legacy) has provided some gory details on his upcoming film, The Devil's Double. To be released by Lionsgate in theatres July 27th, 2011, The Devil's Double is described both as biopic and as a gangland thriller, set in the harsh desert climes of Baghdad.
At recent showings, The Devil's Double has shocked audiences with a specific scene involving a brutal slaying, at a relaxing garden party. Ferda's character Kamel Hannah, a real life bodyguard of Saddam Hussein, upset Uday, Hussein's eldest son. And before you can shield your eyes, Hannah is disemboweled on the big screen, in graphic splashes of blood red.
Ferda says of the scene: "It was one of the most difficult scenes of my life...one minute I’m standing drunk on top of a table, laughing maniacally and spraying machine gun fire...the next moment my guts are spilled all over the place...

I had never even heard of The Devil’s Double until its wonderfully absurd poster premiered on Tuesday, and that was more than enough to make me curious. Thankfully, a trailer has just shown up at Yahoo!, and it does a good job of fulfilling my desire to know more about the film.
I found myself with a big grin on my face from the very beginning, and it stayed there until after it had ended. This thing just looks ridiculous, but in the best way possible. You have Dominic Cooper playing Uday (son of Saddam) Hussein, as well as his double (because why not!), and they seem to be taking a more cartoonish approach to a dark figure. Dan Mecca‘s review from Sundance makes it seem like it could fall in line with what’s set up here, and I’m actually pretty excited. Seriously, any piece of...

Love this new poster for Dominic Cooper’s new movie, Devil’s Double which is the latest from Lionsgate. It’s completely barmy but equally extremely original which makes a change from posters we’ve seen of late. The movie is based on the true story of ‘money, power and opulent decadence’.

You can find out more on the movie on the official Facebook page here. Thanks to AICN for sharing the poster with the world.

AICN have exclusively debuted a golden one-sheet poster for The Devil’s Double, an 80′s set thriller starring Dominic Cooper as Uday Hussein, the eldest son of Saddam Hussein – in a movie being described as a Middle-Eastern Scarface!
Certainly that’s what this poster seems to be alluding too.
In the movie Cooper plays two parts – that of Hussein, and also Latif Yahia – a childhood friend who looked like Hussien and was forced at gun-point to become the regular body double of Iraq’s most hated man. The movie is mostly based on Yahia’s biography of the horrific ordeal as he had to live the life of luxury of being Saddam’s son and all the fear that came with it, which eventually led to his attempts to escape this life.
