Texas Chainsaw Massacre Timeline, Explained
Image
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is one of the oldest and most notable movie franchises in the horror genre, and after 50 years, it's still going strong. That being said, like all iconic series, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise is not without its issues. One of the most notable things fans complain about is the significantly convoluted timeline, which can make it difficult to dive in and start watching. With multiple films spread out over five decades -- and different filmmakers delivering their own interpretation of the ghoulish Sawyer family -- establishing a single coherent story thread is nearly impossible.

There are nine movies in the franchise, with the first movie, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, dating back to 1974. The subsequent installments in the series establish a complicated timeline, with many films acting as simple sequels, while others fit under the remake, reboot, and prequel umbrellas. Still, the premise is pretty simple,...

Screambox Serves Up a Holiday Feast With ‘Secret Santa’, ‘Night of the Missing’, ‘Santastein’ and More!
Image
Tis the season to be scary and Screambox has got you covered with a trio of brand-spanking-new Christmas-themed horror movies that go perfectly with cookies and milk in front of a warm fire.

Now streaming on Screambox from the director of Jason Goes to Hell is Secret Santa and the awesomely creepy anthology Night of the Missing.

That’s not all! Just in time for Christmas break, Santastein will make the long winter’s nights anything but silent on Dec. 19.

Since Black Christmas, holiday films have been a refreshing sub-genre within horror. These films offer a much-needed contrast to the “all is well” narrative that is so often depicted in seasonal films. The angst and anxiety of holiday horror offer a cathartic release because for many the holidays are not perfect, and we don’t see ourselves in the yuletide rom-coms.

In fact, Screambox has more than stocking stuffers, with...

Texas Chainsaw 3D lost its cannibalism because of Midnight Meat Train and lost massacres due to budget
Image
2023 marks the 50th anniversary of the events of the original The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the 20th anniversary of the release of the remake, and also the tenth anniversary of an entry in the franchise that has less fans than those two just mentioned: Texas Chainsaw 3D (watch it Here). Recently, our friends at Bloody Disgusting sat down for an interview with one of the film’s writers, Adam Marcus, and during their chat Marcus revealed that the movie lost its cannibalism due to the box office failure of The Midnight Meat Train and lost a couple massacres due to the lower-than-expected budget.

Directed by John Luessenhop and sporting a story credited to Stephen Susco, Adam Marcus, and Debra Sullivan, and a screenplay by Marcus, Sullivan, and Kirsten Elms, Texas Chainsaw 3D has the following synopsis: Decades ago, residents of Newt, Texas, long suspected that the Sawyer family was responsible for the disappearances of many people.

Exclusive Interview: ‘Jason Goes to Hell’ Director Adam Marcus Talks ‘Secret Santa’ and What’s Next
Image
Horror fans will recognize Adam Marcus as the director of Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday and the co-writer of Texas Chainsaw 3D, two divisive but oft-discussed entries in their respective franchises. He recently returned to the genre to helm Secret Santa, a holiday horror-comedy streaming exclusively on Screambox.

The final installment in our three-part interview with the raconteur focuses on Secret Santa and the trials and tribulations of independent filmmaking. He also teases several projects that are in the works, including a monstrous collaboration with special effects legend Robert Kurtzman.

Secret Santa was born out of Marcus and his writing partner/wife Debra Sullivan’s frustration with the lack of creative control they had on their two previously produced screenplays, 2013’s Texas Chainsaw and 2015’s Momentum. “Artistically, it just started to feel really hollow. I was like, ‘Did I get into this to make money, or did I...

Exclusive Interview: Writer Adam Marcus Reveals the Version of ‘Texas Chainsaw 3D’ We Never Got
Image
Horror fans will recognize Adam Marcus as the director of Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday and the co-writer of Texas Chainsaw, two divisive but oft-discussed entries in their respective franchises. He recently returned to the genre to helm Secret Santa, a holiday horror-comedy streaming exclusively on Screambox.

The second installment in our three-part interview with the raconteur focuses on Texas Chainsaw, the 2013 direct sequel to 1974’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, including glimpses at how the original screenplay differs from the final movie.

“When you see the line ‘Do your thing, cuz’ and people are angry at you for writing it, and you didn’t write it, you just start getting really frustrated about the state of modern filmmaking and the voice that filmmakers have,” Marcus confesses.

The Grudge scribe Stephen Susco wrote the first draft, but as Marcus tells it, “Lionsgate did not want his script because it was about cannibals.

‘Secret Santa’ – Unwrapping the ‘Jason Goes to Hell’ Director’s Christmas Horror Comedy
Image
The frightful weather outside has nothing on the family gathering in Secret Santa. Adam Marcus, who is best known for unleashing the gonzo Friday the 13th entry Jason Goes to Hell upon the world, truly outdid himself with this over-the-top Christmas horror movie. Which is saying a lot considering the events of Jason Voorhees’ sole ‘90s outing. After some time away from the genre, though, Marcus returned in 2018 with a comedy as black as coal. Christmas cynics will naturally be drawn to the promise of a family going off the deep end during the holidays. However, this seasonal shocker may prove to be too much even for the biggest of scrooges.

For many folks, Christmas is the most joyous time of the year. For April Pope (A. Leslie Kies) and other members of her family, it’s the most dreadful. The director’s own internal struggle with Christmas is channeled...

‘The Texas Chain Saw Massacre’ 4K Review – The Original Horror Classic Cuts Deeper Than Ever Before
Image
I thought I was done buying The Texas Chain Saw Massacre after upgrading to the 40th anniversary edition Blu-ray in 2014. Between the crisp presentation and the copious extras, I was certain it was the definitive version of Tobe Hooper‘s 1974 masterpiece. Yet here I am, nearly a decade later, ready to sing the praises of Dark Sky Films‘ 4K Ultra HD edition.

Long before “gritty” was an industry buzzword, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre epitomized the term. As such, one might be wary that a 4K restoration could hinder the viewing experience, but that is not at all the case. Utilizing the 4K scan from the aforementioned Blu-ray, which was approved by Hooper, and now with a wider color gamut courtesy of Hdr, the picture is presented in staggering clarity while maintaining the 16mm film grain. The oppressive heat is virtually palpable.

Co-written by Hooper and Kim Henkel, the plot...

Texas Chainsaw 3D star Alexandra Daddario says the filming location may be haunted
Image
About a year and a half ago, Texas Chainsaw 3D (watch it Here) star Alexandra Daddario gave an interview where she had some interesting things to say about her time working on the film (which just celebrated its 10th anniversary earlier this month). Daddario revealed that she had tried to get the “Do you thing, cuz!” line cut, and that she is very grateful to have been in the movie. Not just because she was having trouble getting work at the time, but also because there were severe issues to overcome during the production and it taught her “what happens when things go wrong, what happens when things go right, why did they go wrong, why shouldn’t they have happened, how does the studio get involved when something goes wrong, how studios interact with projects.” Now, during a new interview on The Kelly Clarkson Show, Daddario seems to have...

Just behind horror, believe it or not, my second favourite genre of film is ‘Christmas’. I will watch anything if it has a Christmas theme or is set at that time of year. So obviously when these two genres mix, I am over the moon! And there’s plenty of great Christmas horror movies out there. Even in the last few years we’ve had Krampus, A Christmas Horror Story and Better Watch Out. And I was hoping Secret Santa would be added to the list of films I will watch once a year.

Dark Heart of Jason Voorhees Documentary Poster Revealed, the Making of the Final Friday
The Dark Heart of Jason Voorhees: The Making of The Final Friday is a new documentary that traces the history of the 9th movie in the franchise, and the first installment for New Line after Paramount Pictures let the slasher killer saunter his way over to the Warner Bros. owned studio. It did a lot to reestablish Jason as a demonic force, and brought some exciting new mythology to the table. Today, we have a poster for this documentary, which gives us a much-wanted Freddy and Jason rematch.

Not only are there are a lot of Evil Dead references in Jason Goes To Hell: The Final Friday, the team behind this sequel were also able to bring Freddy Krueger into the mix with the Friday the 13th franchise now at New Line. Freddy doesn't show up until the final moments, and he's only hinted at, with his signature knifed glove...

Interview: Director Adam Marcus talks ‘Secret Santa’
Ahead of the UK premiere of Secret Santa at Horror Channel FrightFest Glasgow 2018, director Adam Marcus tells us about his obsession with Christmas Eve, being inspired by Orson Wells and why family is the real ‘monster’.

Over the past few years we’ve seen a lot more seasonal based shockers than ever before. Why is the Christmas Holiday period so ripe for horror?

I’m not sure. Maybe, because it’s the “Happiest Time of the Year”, it’s ripe for the picking when it comes to our genre’s ironic sense of humour. I think there is a cynicism that’s kind of permeating everything. Nothing is as it seems. No one can be trusted. So, perhaps these films are playing into people’s cynical fear, and that’s the cause for the trend. If you can’t trust your government, or your neighbours who might vote for that government,...

Texas Chainsaw 3D Writer Spills His Guts Regarding Screwy Timeline
With so many long-running franchises enduring, it’s safe to say that continuity in various series is getting screwier than ever. Granted, part of the reasoning is that these intellectual properties need to be made accessible for moviegoers who weren’t yet alive in the 1970’s or ’80s, but we can thank the horror genre for doing its generous part in allowing remakes and such to be a regular thing these days.

Now, studios could’ve just left it as building off original timelines and going forward, but, as of late, we’ve seen a return to originally established continuities with disregard for sequels that followed. Prime examples of this would be Blumhouse’s upcoming Halloween reboot that follows only the original flick and a newly gestating RoboCop movie that adheres to that very same formula. Really, it’s about time that studios release guides that bring the general public up to speed.

Watch a Live Read of George Miller’s Justice League Mortal Script with Casper Van Dien as Superman
I would have loved to see George Miller’s Justice League Mortal film, but apparently it just wasn’t meant to be. Right before the film was supposed to start shooting, Warner Bros. shut it down. Not long after the script for the film, which was written by Kieran and Michele Mulroney, leaked online.

The script may have been around awhile, and I’m sure some of you have already read it, but Comic Bug comics store in Manhattan Beach, California recently hosted a livenread of the script with a full cast of actors, and it’s really interesting. Unfortunately, the original cast wasn’t brought together to do this, but it’s still entertaining and worth checking out.

The live-read consists of Adam Marcus as the Narrator, Alfred Pennyworth; Jennifer Wenger as Wonder Woman/Diana Prince; Tracy Drolet as Iris Allen; Curtis Fortier as The Flash/Barry Allen; Will Dixon...

Momentum Review
You can say this much for Momentum – it more than sustains its own. From an energetic opening heist sequence, complete with slick full-body suits and voice modifying masks left over from a Daft Punk concert, to an extended cat-and-mouse shootout in an abandoned factory, the movie doesn’t skimp on hard-hitting, high-octane action, and its streamlined (and very silly) plot moves from over-the-top setpiece to setpiece with refreshing self-awareness.

Olga Kurylenko, a long way from Quantum of Solace, stars as Alex, one of the ultra-professional thieves in that aforementioned heist, which director Stephen Campanelli handles with style and unexpected creativity. She’s a very believable badass, delivering high kicks and bullet sprays with a cold, methodical detachment that fits the character nicely.

Unfortunately, though Alex and her co-criminals were simply going after diamonds, they also end up in possession of an all-important flash drive, which contains top-secret information that could...

The action-thriller centers on a thief (Olga Kurylenko) who is forced to go on the run to evade the authorities and a ruthless gang of assassins, lead by Vincent Cassel's character. No details were given for Morgan Freeman and Shea Whigham's roles.

Stephen Campanelli, who has served as a camera operator on Clint Eastwood's movies since 1995's The Bridges of Madison County, is directing from a screenplay by Adam Marcus and Debra Sullivan. Here's what the director had to say about working under Clint Eastwood and transitioning to the director's chair.

""For the last 20 years, I've been blessed to work with one of cinema's greatest story tellers, Clint Eastwood, as my mentor. Now, I will be making the leap to where I really belong,...

‘Texas Chainsaw (3D)’ Blu-ray Review
Stars: Alexandra Daddario, Dan Yeager, Trey Songz, Scott Eastwood, Tania Raymonde, Shaun Sipos, Paul Rae, Richard Riehle, Bill Moseley | Written by Stephen Susco, Adam Marcus, Debra Sullivan | Directed by John Luessenhop

After Platinum Dunes’ remake and a badly-received prequel to said remake, Texas Chainsaw (3D) goes back to where it all began. Picking up directly where Tobe Hooper’s classic 1974 movie, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre ended, this direct sequel shows the aftermath of the first film as the townspeople, discovering their suspicions about the Sawyer’s are true, show the family the meaning of mob justice – burning their house of horrors to the ground and killing every last member of the family – or so they thought.

Decades later and hundreds of miles away from the original massacre, a young woman named Heather learns that she has inherited a Texas estate from a grandmother she never knew she had. After...

Review: Texas Chainsaw
The birth of the modern horror movie can arguably be traced back to a handful of films, notably (but not exclusively) George A Romero’s Night of the Living Dead (1968), John Carpenter’s Halloween (1978), Wes Craven’s Last House on the Left (1972) and Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974). All of them have been remade in recent years, though unsurprisingly none of them came anywhere close to surpassing or even equalling the originals, so rather than choose to reboot the franchise for the second time in a decade, director John Luessenhop has gone down a different route and the result is interesting to say the least.

Picking up exactly where the original movie finished some thirty seven years earlier, Texas Chainsaw is a direct sequel to Hooper’s 1974 classic and opens with the aftermath of the titular massacre and the consequences for the Sawyer family of having allowed...

Texas Chainsaw - Blu-ray Review
Leatherface cranks his weapon of choice for yet another outing that starts interesting and wastes any potential it had in the opening minutes. Texas Chainsaw (the seventh film in a franchise that has never lived up to the first) was directed by John Luessenhop (Takers) from a screenplay by Kirsten Elms, Adam Marcus and Debra Sullivan (both who wrote the story with Stephen Susco). It stars Alexandra Daddario, Dan Yeager, Trey Songz, Scott Eastwood, Keram Malicki-Sánchez, Tania Raymonde, Shaun Sipos, Thom Barry, Richard Riehle, and Paul Rae. The film also features cameos from stars of the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre - including Gunnar Hansen, John Dugan and Marilyn Burns. Although the film.s story is so weak it seems...

Texas Chainsaw

Evil Wears Many Faces

Revving Up Monday 27Th May

Lionsgate’s Texas Chainsaw, the Us #1 box office hit, picks up directly where the terrifying 1974 movie, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre ended, with the repercussions of Leatherface’s shocking slayings. In the aftermath of Tobe Hooper’s classic, the townspeople take dramatic action against the Sawyer family. They had long suspected that the family was responsible for several mysterious disappearances and had their suspicions confirmed when a young woman escaped the house. Word of the murders quickly spread, and a vigilante mob of enraged locals surrounded the Sawyer stronghold, burning it to the ground and killing every last member of the family – or so they thought.

Decades later and hundreds of miles away from the original massacre, a young woman named Heather learns that she has inherited a Texas estate from a grandmother she never knew she had. After embarking...

Texas Chainsaw 3D - See the Leatherface We Should Have Gotten
Love it or hate it, Texas Chainsaw 3D made an impact on genre fans. That being said, the one thing nearly everyone can agree upon is the fact that for a majority of the movie Leatherface's mask is easily the worst of the franchise. Get ready for a peek at what could have been.

The cats over at Geek Tyrant landed themselves some unused concept art for the titular character from artist Jerad S. Marantz. Each of the designs below flat out blow away what we saw in theatres and just add to the whole "What the fuck were they thinking?" canon of questions regarding this movie. Check 'em out!

Texas Chainsaw 3D (2013)
Directed by: John Luessenhop

Written by: Adam Marcus, Debra Sullivan, Kirsten Elms

Featuring: Alexandra Daddario, Tania Raymonde, Adam Yeager, Trey Songz, Shaun Sipos, Keram Malicki-Sánchez

I have a confession. Despite living in Texas, I've never been a big fan of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise. I actually didn't see the original film until I was 25 years old, which shocked most of my friends considering what a horror buff I am. But it just wasn't a staple in my household. (My mom and I were both Jason fans to the core.)

I'm also not as venomously anti-remake as most of my friends. Do I wish Hollywood would get new material and invest even a fraction of those monumental budgets into indie films and original ideas? Absolutely. But from a marketing perspective, it's easy to see why they don't; these franchises are guaranteed cash in the bank, and many younger audiences aren't even familiar with the originals.

The Texas Big Mouth Massacre - Texas Chainsaw 3D Sequel Talk Premature
Texas Chainsaw 3D is a strange animal. Everything about the flick is wonky and weird, and we guess in some way that's kind of appropriate. In any event don't get too revved up about a sequel yet, kids, as there's more to the saw. No idea what that "more to the saw" means, but it sounded cool.

Yesterday Deadline announced that Texas Chainsaw 4 was on the way, which is befuddling in and of itself as there are several sequels, one remake, and one prequel already; however Texas Chainsaw 3D was said to be a direct sequel to the original, really making it Texas Chainsaw 2 so a sequel to that would have been Texas Chainsaw 3 and not Texas Chainsaw 4, but we must remember that this new series is also home to a 40-year-old character portrayed by a 26-year-old hottie. Where was I? Oh yeah...

Today the rights holders for the film,...

It's Official - Look for Another Chapter of Texas Chainsaw from Millennium Films
In an announcement that surprised no one given Texas Chainsaw 3D's number one spot at the box office last weekend, Millennium Films is moving ahead with Texas Chainsaw 4, and production will begin later this year in Louisiana.

Per Deadline, the next installment will be spearheaded by producer Carl Mazzocone, executive producers Mark Burg, Avi Lerner, Tobe Hooper, Trevor Short, John Thompson, Danny Dimbort, Lati Grobman, and Christa Campbell. Considering TC3D took in a surprisingly high $21.7 million gross and a per screen average of $8,193 on 2,654 screens, Millennium is smart to strike while the iron is hot.

“Lati and Christa brought the idea of this franchise to us. They were certain of the audience appeal so we signed on,” Millennium Films Chairman Avi Lerner said, “and it turns out they were right. It was a bloody good decision. Lionsgate agreed to distribute the film in the Us and did a fantastic job.
