This big screen, big star crowd-pleaser is a whopping entertainment yet too disjointed to satisfy as a gangster movie. It can ignore history to make its points, but what is gained by killing off the only characters we really love? Audiences didn’t feel shortchanged: Sean Connery and Robert De Niro deliver strong characterizations and Ennio Morricone’s music is ideal. Brian De Palma’s visual instincts are at full strength too; the show is marvelous to look at. It’s a real winner, at least when its not running in knee-jerk Scarface overkill mode.

Movies about the blacklist aren’t common, probably because as Robert Vaughn wrote, the period produced no happy stories, ‘Only Victims.’ Robert de Niro, Annette Bening and George Wendt give a bite of immediacy to the way the blacklist upset careers and blighted lives. Few of us would like to be publicly branded an Enemy of the People, but doing so seems to be America’s number one spectator sport.

Over the last few decades – thanks in part to movies and TV shows like Dazed and Confused, Boogie Nights, Anchorman and HBO's Vinyl – there’s been a pronounced pop cultural tendency to reduce the 1970s to little more than a fabulous parade of campy signifiers like mirrored disco balls, brightly-painted muscle cars, platform shoes, bellbottomed jeans, tube tops, Afro hairdos, pornstaches and piles of cocaine.
It's an understandable impulse, of course. (Who doesn't love Afros or piles of cocaine?) But taking such a superficial approach to the seventies means glossing over the grittier,...

Four elderly gentlemen form The Chowder Society, a group in which they meet up to smoke cigars and tell chilling ghost stories in an attempt to scare each other. Hiding from a dark secret of their past, they use their stories to push it from their memories. When one of the member’s sons dies in strange circumstances though, it seems that their past transgressions have come back to haunt them in a soul that refuses to let go of her vengeance.
Ghost Story is based on Peter Straub’s novel, and we get to hear plenty from the author on this Blu-ray release. This gives a good insight into an eighties movie that feels very original.

One ordinary couple. One extraordinary night. Claire and Phil Foster are headed out for a typical evening in New York, when they encounter the adventure of a lifetime in the film Date Night (2010). The couple, played by Tina Fey and Steve Carell, become victims in a case of mistaken identity when they attend a trendy Manhattan bistro and soon find themselves running all over the city taking on corrupt cops, a formidable mobster, and a crazed cabbie. As with previous films like Mr. and Mrs. Smith (2005), The Incredibles (2004), and True Lies (1994), where bored spouses find a renewed sense of themselves and each other while fighting crime, this film has two of today's funniest actors fulfilling the roles of the Mr. and Mrs. They comically submerge themselves into this night of intrigue, complete with car chases, shootouts, and showdowns with shady characters. Mark Wahlberg joins the cast as Holbrooke Grant, a...
