Adrien Brody Says He Has Ptsd After Dedication to His Role in 'The Pianist'
Image
Adrien Brody, the star of one of 2024's best films, The Brutalist, recalls the harrowing experience that was shooting The Pianist, the film that earned him an Academy Award for Best Actor in 2003. Brody reveals that he went through an extreme diet to lose weight for the role, and the experience was, in fact, so harrowing that it gave him post-traumatic stress disorder (Ptsd).

The actor spoke to Vulture about his latest film, one he likes to compare to The Pianist. In The Brutalist, Brody gives life to László Tóth, a World War II Jewish survivor who moves to the United States after the war, and his life is completely turned around by a mogul who sees Tóth's skills in architecture. The film is already gaining award buzz, with Brody being at the forefront of a tight Oscar race. Thus, it makes sense that he is now reflecting on The...

10 Impactful War Movies That Will Emotionally Stick With You Forever

Truly impactful war movies have the potential to leave an eternal mark on viewers who carry forward this powerful cinematic experience for the rest of their lives. From brutal depictions of soldiers on the battlefield to uncompromising showcases of the psychological horror of life during wartime, conflict-based cinema has consistently spread an anti-war message that connects with viewers in ways that other media often cant. As the visual depiction of warfare gets presented to audiences in its purest form, this can leave an impression on viewers that lasts a lifetime.

Many of the greatest directors who ever lived have made truly timeless war movies so brutal they can only be endured once. However, the sheer power of that singular viewing can be so memorable that the visions of war are seared in the audiences subconscious for decades to come. While these emotionally intense war movies will surely make for uncomfortable viewing,...

Exclusive: Hapless Showrunner and Writer Gary Sinyor Discusses Creating a Hilarious Self-Funded Comedy
Image
The state of television consistently shifts, and even now, shows become unlikely hits overnight. A series like Baby Reindeer does not seem like a barn burner on its face, yet it defined the months of April and May for Netflix. An appetite is growing for international shows, and Hapless joins the trend of British shows coming stateside. With the release of Hapless on Peacock, showrunner, creator, and director Gary Sinyor sat down with Fandomwire to discuss the comedy series. Along the way, we discussed its roots, his background when approaching the show, and his push to make more Hapless in the future.

The Origins of Hapless

Sinyor had helmed several movies and episodes of television before kicking off Hapless. Sinyor explains, “I think the biggest difference isn’t necessarily between TV and film, but between working with a large crew or working with a very tight small crew. And I...

Eddie Marsan on Playing a U.S. President in ‘Franklin,’ Amy Winehouse’s Dad in ‘Black to Back’ and Staying Under the Radar
Image
Last month Eddie Marsan faced a happy dilemma: two high-profile projects in which he co-stars –Apple TV+ series “Franklin” led by Michael Douglas and Sam Taylor Johnson’s highly-anticipated Amy Winehouse biopic “Back to Black” – were both being released on the same day, April 12, in Marsan’s native U.K. (“Back to Black came out in the U.S. on May 17).

The resulting publicity maelstrom was, Marsan says, “intense.” And yet despite that, the actor – who has starred in over 150 screen projects including “Ray Donovan,” “Deadpool 2” and Guy Ritchie’s “Sherlock Holmes,” can truthfully claim to be “not really that famous.”

Partly that’s because his highest profile roles in the U.S. have seen the East London-born actor putting on an American accent, including in “Franklin,” in which he plays the second U.S. President, John Adams. Marsan has a long history with the character, having once been...

Helen Mirren is transformed into blunt, stubborn Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir in the official trailer for Golda, director Guy Nattiv’s ticking-clock thriller recalling true events set during the tense Yom Kippur War in 1973.

Faced with Israel’s possible destruction, Meir engages in diplomatic brinkmanship with U.S. secretary of state Henry Kissinger, played by Liev Schreiber, in the feature from Bleecker Street and ShivHans Pictures set to hit theaters on Aug. 25.

“Remember I am first an American, second I am secretary of state and third I am a Jew,” a wary Kissinger tells Israel’s only female leader at one point in the teaser trailer that dropped on Tuesday.

Helen Mirren is Israel's Golda Meir in Official Trailer for Drama 'Golda'
Image
"If the Americans throw us to the dogs, I will not be taken alive." Bleecker Street has revealed an official US trailer for the film Golda, a drama about the Israeli prime minister Golda Meir. It premiered at the 2023 Berlin Film Festival earlier this year to mixed-to-negative reviews, as it's a rather dull & dry film. The film focuses on the intensely dramatic & high-stakes responsibilities & decisions that Golda Meir, also known as the "Iron Lady of Israel", faced during the Yom Kippur War (in 1973 – aka the Arab–Israeli War). Berlinale adds: "An almost unrecognizable Helen Mirren brings to life one of the most iconic and influential political leaders of the twentieth century, previously played by Ingrid Bergman on TV and Anne Bancroft on stage. Meir was a woman at the centre of a dramatic geopolitical episode, in a potentially fatal moment for her country, surrounded by men: her generals Dayan, Elazar,...

‘The Great’ Throws Genres in a Blender — and Uses That Same Approach to Casting
Image
“The Great” Season 3 contains some titanic shifts of character — and actors — so even though AP European History has already spoiled the broad strokes of the Hulu series, spoilers ahead.

Catherine (Elle Fanning) grieves in the last five episodes of the season, leading to an eventual, equally tragic and thrilling transformation that brings her closer to becoming a great ruler with a capital-g, capital-r. But underneath the ice — metaphorically speaking, not the literal ice-covered lake into which Peter (Nicholas Hoult) falls and drowns — showrunner Tony McNamara and casting director Dixie Chassay and her team did a lot to make sure the show always felt full even with Peter gone.

Some of this happens by keeping Hoult around, playing Peter’s double Pugachev, who rabble-rouses at the behest of Archie (Adam Godley) and then starts liking all this arousal a little too much. The show also makes strategic additions to the regulars of Catherine’s court.

Filmmaker Guy Nattiv addresses Helen Mirren ‘Golda’ casting controversy: “She’s got the Jewish chops”
Image
Mirren’s casting as Israeli prime minister Golda Meir ignited debate over non-Jewish people playing Jewish roles.

Golda director Guy Nattiv has addressed the debate around the casting of non-Jews in Jewish roles, saying ahead of the film’s Berlinale world premiere that UK actor Mirren has “got the Jewish chops to portray Golda”.

Mirren, who is not Jewish, plays Israel’s only female prime minister, Golda Meir, as she leads her country through the Yom Kippur War of 1973, a conflict between Israel and a coalition of Arab states led by Egypt and Syria.

In the UK, the likes of...

‘The Princess’ Review
Image
Stars: Joey King, Ed Stoppard, Alex Reid, Dominic Cooper, Veronica Ngo, Olga Kurylenko, Kristofer Kamiyasu, Fergus O’Donnell, Antoni Davidov | Written by Ben Lustig, Jake Thornton | Directed by Le-Van Kiet

The Princess opens with the title character waking up groggy to find herself locked in a tower with only vague memories of how she got there. Within minutes she has to deal with a pair of soldiers with ill intent, both of whom she quite violently dispatches with moves that include a lethal kick and a hairpin through the eye.

As that probably told you, The Princess tosses all notions of historical accuracy, or any kind of accuracy really right out the window. Director Le-Van Kiet takes Ben Lustig (The Thirst) and Jake Thornton’s script and runs with it. After his last two films, he knew he needed to repeat the success of his last hit, the female-fronted action film Furie.

The Princess Review
In most stories, a princess trapped in tower will need a man to save her. Joey King’s unnamed Princess isn’t like that. Furie director Le-Van Kiet’s actioner attempts to take a female lead and invert The Raid, with her facing off against a seemingly unending phalanx of enemies as she descends the tower where she’s being held captive, prior to her wedding to the evil and ambitious Julius (Dominic Cooper).

Initially, the presence of Joey King and the fact that this film (in the UK) would be launching on Disney+ made me think it would essentially be Enchanted with swords; a stereotypical Disney princess finally fighting back violently. Kiet and writers Ben Lustig and Jake Thornton lean into this a little in the film’s opening, which springs The Princess’ fighting skills on us when guards come to her room. Even here though, there’s an immediate retreat from anything cartoony,...

‘The Princess’ Review: Joey King Tosses Fairy-Tale Values Out the Window
Image
Practically everybody in “The Princess” has a name, except the princess. Played by “The Kissing Booth” cutie Joey King as an anything-but-passive heroine, the movie’s anonymous eponymous protagonist isn’t a proper character so much as a one-dimensional empowerment symbol: “The Princess” represents the antithesis of every fairy-tale damsel who sat around waiting to be whisked away or married off. She begins the movie locked in the top floor of the castle, wearing a wedding dress and iron shackles, and ends it drenched in more blood than Stephen King’s Carrie, some of it hers, but most belonging to all the men who’ve underestimated her.

Over the course of the next hour and a half, “The Princess” hardly stops to catch its breath. Whatever Disney movies may have led you to believe about royals named Ariel (she sings!) and Belle (she reads!), this one learned Krav Maga behind her father’s back,...

An artificial intelligence system called Indra is also put in place to connect citizens via a wireless network, and people are ranked based on their adherence to the society’s rules. Mark Hamill and Tom Cullen in Knightfall (2017)
Knightfall Canceled By History After Two Seasons
Mark Hamill and Tom Cullen in Knightfall (2017)
Bad news for fans of chivalry! Knightfall has been canceled by History after two seasons. This was all but a foregone conclusion as Knightfall’s second and final season concluded on May 13, 2019 and there have not been any updates on Knightfall season 3 since. Now History has made the cancellation official, according to Deadline.

The writing was on the wall for History’s Middle Ages epic even before the second season conclusion came and went without a renewal. Despite adding Mark Hamill (Star Wars) for its second season, Knightfall Season 2 featured a steep drop in ratings from its already ratings-challenged first season. According to the site TV Series Finale, Knightfall averaged a dismal 0.12 rating in the 18-49 demographic and attracted around only 650,000 viewers per episode total. That is a nearly 50% drop in viewers from the first season.

Bigger networks might be able to get away with attracting a hyper niche audience...

Knightfall Season 2 Interviews – Tom Cullen, Clementine Nicholson, Simon Merrells & Pádraic Delaney
It seems like a long time coming, but this week sees a return for the Knights Templars in season 2 of Knightfall in the UK. At the end of season one having fallen from grace, Landry (Tom Cullen) was battered and bruised from an almighty battle with King Philip (Ed Stoppard) and left holding his newborn child.

Cinemax Greenlights & Sets Cast For ‘Trackers’ Thriller Series As International Co-Production With M-Net & Zdf
Cinemax has boarded Trackers, a thriller drama series based on the novel by bestselling South African author Deon Meyer.

James Gracie (aka James Alexander Gracie), Rolanda Marais and Ed Stoppard are set to star in the series, a co-production between Cinemax, the South Africa’s M-Net and Germany’s Zdf.

Multichoice’s M-Net and Zdf teamed for Trackers in late 2018, with Jyri Kähönen set to direct all episodes and Ivan Strasburg as director of photography. Around that time, the companies started conversations with Cinemax about coming on board as a co-producer.

Trackers interweaves three story strands into a sophisticated action-packed thriller that covers the length and breadth of South Africa, explosively colliding in Cape Town in a violent conspiracy involving organized crime, smuggled diamonds, state security, Black Rhinos, the CIA and an international terrorist plot.

Gracie plays Lemmer, a man who is seeking revenge while rebuilding his life in a...

‘Knightfall’ Season 2 Trailer: Watch Mark Hamill Give Out Sage Advice and Punch People (Video)
Mark Hamill and Tom Cullen in Knightfall (2017)
History’s drama series “Knightfall” will return with its second season — which includes Mark Hamill — on Monday, March 25 at 10 p.m. Et/Pt, A + E Studios announced during the Television Critics Association press tour Sunday. But if you can’t wait that long to see Hamill trade in his lightsaber for a Medieval sword, you’re in luck, because History also dropped the Season 2 trailer.

The 2-minute, 16-second video teases Hamill’s debut as Talus, a battle-hardened Knight Templar veteran and initiate master who is tasked with preparing the next generation of men to proudly wear the red cross on their chests and become “God’s Executioners.” Based on the trailer, it seems Talus oscillates between giving out sage advice, and punching people.

Hamill joins series star Tom Cullen (Sir Landry du Lauzon) — who he punches in the face in the clip above, by the way — for the eight-episode Season...

We checked out Dark Rising, a new upcoming superhero show with a real difference. There was also the panel for Night Shooters, which looked like a great martial arts/comedy flick. And then there was this, Genesis. We were immediately intrigued because, well lets not mess about, John Hannah is in the movie and that for me warranted checking out the panel. Mark E Smith Remembered
Mark E Smith and The Fall lived on the outskirts of alternative rock and pop music for over forty years.

I saw them once in '85. They played the Hammersmith Palais. I went with my brother Phil who was a big fan from the start. The place wasn’t packed but the core was positioned around the band, close. Many of them taping the show. I had this sense of the stage being low and we were really in on the vibe. Which was heavy, carrying a low-level threat of aggression. It felt like cheap grindy speed.
