I interviewed Pierce Brosnan in conjunction with his third outing as James Bond, in Michael Apted's The World Is Not Enough, in 1999. Brosnan was alternately charming, erudite, thoughtful and intense during our two hour chat. His native intelligence shone through it all, as did a sense of decency which many people seem to acquire after enduring and surviving hardship in their formative years.

There are several dangers in becoming a cultural icon, not the least of which is the stigma that your public will forever keep you imprisoned in the mold of your iconography, allowing the recipient a privileged, if imprisoned, existence, particularly if that person is an artist. Sean Connery faced just such a dilemma during the height of James Bond-mania in the mid-60's. Pierce Brosnan is up this year for the entry in the older, action gentleman’s club, and the ex-Bond is a spy again. The November Man, if the trailer is to be believed, packs a lot of action into the story, and finds Peter Devereaux (Brosnan) sucked back into his life as a spy so that he can protect a witness. Naturally, part of the problem protecting her is that there may be a mole, and Devereaux doesn’t know who to trust.
This one hits on August 27th, and may be taking a chance there. Certain other movies with similarities to this one have proven they can perform well, but the tail end of summer competition might be fierce.
At any rate, I liked Brosnan as Bond, and he should be able to pull off a great turn here. I am getting a little bored of the generics of the plot synopsis,...

Pierce Brosnan is returning to television with an investigative thriller from veteran ER writer-producer Jack Orman and Sony Pictures Television that will likely go straight to series. Orman has written a pilot script for the ex-007's project, which Sony is shopping to international broadcasters with the goal to land pre-sales elsewhere before taking it to U.S. networks. The untitled drama centers on a "fixer," private investigator specializing in international crisis intervention who is called in to help solve homicides, abductions, financial schemes and other crimes anywhere in the world. It is largely based on the real-life experiences of international Pi Logan Clarke, head of the Los Angeles-based Clarke International Investigations. Producer Keri Selig started things off on the project when she took Clarke to Irish DreamTime, Brosnan's production company with Beau St. Clair. It’s hard not to immediately think of Pierce Brosnan as James Bond, or even Remington Steele, but in the last decade, he’s played a remarkable variety of roles. During a recent roundtable interview, Brosnan explained that he’d burnt out on being the perfectly-coiffed, cool-as-a-cucumber leading man, and decided to take on some different challenges. One of those challenges was producing in addition to directing, and eight films later with his partner Beau St. Clair, Brosnan is set to release The Greatest.
Directed by newcomer Shana Feste, The Greatest stars Brosnan alongside Susan Sarandon, Carey Mulligan, and Aaron Johnson, and the former 007 plays a grieving father who takes in his son’s pregnant girlfriend after the boy dies in a car accident. Hollywood News joined a small group of reporters at the film’s Los Angeles press day to discuss his roles in front of...

My first screenwriting teacher at the Nyu film school was Patricia Cooper, who'd served as the highest female executive at a major studio at that time, overseeing big movies at Paramount in the '70s. She marched our class up to the Gulf & Western Building at Columbus Circle and sat us down in a screening room that resembled what I imagined a first-class airline compartment looked like, then showed us Francis Ford Coppola's "The Conversation."
As we gushed over it afterward, she praised the film but confessed to disappointment with the script. This was my first glimpse of major-league Hollywood story development.
My second teacher was Venable Herndon, co-author of Arthur Penn's "Alice's Restaurant." Venable's class was like some Reichian encounter group, but to get out of it in one piece, you didn't have to bare your primal wounds, only write a screenplay.
My third teacher was once-blacklisted Ian McLellan Hunter,...

- Part of the perks of being an actor who moonlights as a director is being able to call favors upon friends like Pierce Brosnan, Patricia Clarkson and Julianne Moore. Though Stanley Tucci's last project (Blind Date) barely made a blip on the festival circuit and will, almost two years later, finally be receiving a theatrical release in September, The Hunter should fair a better because Clarkson + Moore + her Laws of Attraction co-star Brosnan will ensure this dramedy receives a little bit more stardust. Brosnan has also worked with Clarkson in Ira Sachs' Married Life. To be produced by Tucci, Steve Buscemi and Wren Arthur's Olive Prods., Irish DreamTime's Brosnan and Beau St. Clair and River Bend Pictures' Stan Erdreich.
