The world is changed. I feel it in the water. I feel it in the earth. I smell it in the air. That's right -- it's officially pumpkin spice season, which means we've drawn near to the end of August and have well and truly reached the last third of 2023. But more than reminding us of the fleetingness of life and the unstoppable ravages of time, the beginning of September also ushers in the fall movie season and, of course, another round of streaming service shuffling as various movies and shows get kicked around in a never-ending digital dance.
That's why we're here. For those who tend to rely on these streaming platforms to re-watch their favorites or (hopefully) explore previously unknown corners of cinema and television, well, the end of each month and beginning of the next are easily the busiest times of the year. And for that, it...

Aubrey Plaza gave a keynote ‘screen talk’ at the London Film Festival Monday where she revealed she received a call from her agent during the shoot of Dirty Grandpa telling her that her co-star, Robert De Niro, was “freaked out” by her behavior on set.
Plaza said she received the call early during the shoot for the film, in which she plays De Niro’s much younger love interest.
“I auditioned to get that part. I really wanted that part. I created the character for myself and I wanted to make the most of it. I’m working with De Niro. I’m playing his love interest. Nothing’s going to stop me,” she told the festival audience. “But I didn’t get time with him. There wasn’t time to get to know him or anything like that. He shows up like a puff of smoke when he’s shooting.

If you live in Los Angeles, it’s a rite of passage to see the bright pink convertible driven by Angelyne. A B-movie actress of few credits (“Earth Girls Are Easy”) and largely regarded as famous for being famous, her ubiquitous billboards became shorthand for ’80s Los Angeles. In 2017, The Hollywood Reporter published an expose that claimed to reveal her life, although Angelyne disputed the story.
With so much still unknown about Angelyne and anyone outside LA understandably hard-pressed to know who she is, star Emmy Rossum and creator Nancy Oliver have their work cut out for them. “Angelyne” is a hot pink, rapid-fire series focused on the nature of identity and the way our memory informs who we are. With a fun, unique structure, and producer-star Rossum slathering herself in prosthetics and body-hugging costumes, “Angelyne” becomes a highly entertaining and heartfelt look at a Los Angeles icon.

It takes a lot to be a bombshell. Emmy Rossum transformed into busty billboard queen Angelyne for the eponymous Peacock series, premiering May 19, but the physical embodiment of the performance artist took a toll on the “Shameless” alum.
Rossum, who also executive produces the series alongside husband and “Mr. Robot” creator Sam Esmail, revealed that she spent an average of four to five hours in makeup every day and bleached her eyebrows for the role. Per The Hollywood Reporter, Rossum also got blisters from the fake breasts and suffered tear duct issues from wearing two pairs of contact lenses.
“The physicality of the character was challenging,” Rossum told the outlet. “The body is heavy, yet it has to feel light and effervescent…I found it to be completely liberating to look in the mirror and not see myself at all. At first, it’s unnerving. But feeling lost gives way...

Once they decided to pursue the Williams family’s story, the Whites proceeded to do just about everything right. In Hollywood, this is rare.

When filmmaker Lawrence Michael Levine gave the script for “Black Bear” to Aubrey Plaza, it included one hell of a direction in its final act: the leading lady “breaks down and gives the best performance that anyone has ever seen ever.” No pressure.
“I had this moment before we started shooting, where I just felt like, ‘This is going to be really hard and fucked up,'” Plaza said during a recent interview with IndieWire. “But there was something in me that felt like I needed to dive off the deep end. If the movie had been about anything else, I don’t know if I would have been able to put myself through that. It was too much for me to pass up. I just had to do it.”

Just nine months into its existence, and Disney+ original programming has already run the full gamut, from critically beloved series like “The Mandalorian” to theatrical cast-offs best left forgotten. One piece of programming mostly missing so far: , family-friendly fare to fill a lazy Friday night. And while there’s nothing wrong with that, the lack of imagination on display in Mark Waters’ “Magic Camp” is almost more depressing than the incomprehensible weirdness of Kenneth Branagh’s Ya flop. At least that film was trying for something.
The best warning of what’s to come arrives in the opening credits: the film comes from six screenwriters, and while many of the half-dozen scribes (not counting the two additional with only “story by” credits) it took to write “Magic Camp” are quite talented folk, little of that magic makes its way into this feature. Final credits don’t even include Steve Martin,...

Exclusive: Spyglass Media Group has made a deal to turn adventure photographer Ben Moon’s memoir Denali: A Man A Dog, A Friendship Of A Lifetime into a feature that will star Charlie Hunnam, with Max Winkler adapting and directing the touching drama about Moon and his 15 year bond with a rescue dog. Max Winkler will adapt and direct. Hunnam will produce Bona Fide Productions’ Albert Berger and Ron Yerxa.
Denali reteams Winkler with Hunnam; they recently collaborated in Lionsgate’s upcoming boxing drama Jungleland, which also stars Jack O’Connell and Jessica Barden. Hunnam earlier worked with Berger & Yerxa on Cold Mountain.

It’s not a hugely famous film, but 1991’s The Rocketeer has a strong cult following, with Joe Johnston’s throwback to 1940s movie serials often viewed as an underrated gem in Disney’s back catalogue. For the past few years, the studio has been attempting to capitalize on this by getting a belated reboot off the ground and back in 2016, we learned that Max Winkler and Matt Spicer had been hired to pen a script for the follow-up, titled The Rocketeers.
Nothing has materialized since then, but it seems that the advent of Disney Plus has given the project a new lease of life. That’s right, We Got This Covered is hearing from our sources – the same ones who said the Mouse House was developing National Treasure 3 and Transformers is being rebooted, both of which were correct – that the project will be released on the streaming service.

Comedy veteran Ira Ungerleider has been tapped as showrunner on the series, executive producing alongside Dennings, creator-writer Weiss, Robbie, Hedblom and Tom Ackerley for LuckyChap; Unkeless and Morgan for Clubhouse Pictures, Dennings’ manager Nicole King as well as...

Kat Dennings can officially make herself comfortable at Hulu: The streaming service has handed a 10-episode series order to Dollface, a comedy starring the 2 Broke Girls actress, TVLine has learned.
The project, which initially received a pilot order almost a year ago, follows a young woman who — after getting dumped by her longtime boyfriend — must deal with her own imagination in order to literally and metaphorically re-enter the world of women and rekindle the female friendships she left behind.
“Reading [series creator] Jordan [Weiss]’s script was like opening a window into my own brain,” Dennings said in a statement. “I...

Refinery29 has been bitten by the cinema bug.
The digital media company, which targets young female audiences, struck a partnership with indie-film distributor Neon. Under the the pact, the two New York-based companies will work to identify, acquire and co-distribute films centered on “rule-defying storytellers.”
The first films distributed by Neon and Refinery29 will be “Assassination Nation,” a modern-day re-imagining of the Salem witch trials in which four high-school girls take up arms against their accusers, and “Little Woods,” a spin on Westerns from the female perspective.
Refinery29’s video business to date has revolved around short-form films and series, including its Shatterbox project with female filmmakers. Now it’s going into business with Neon to extend R29’s brand into feature films.
“We are excited to expand our storytelling and experiential offerings and make our mark on the feature film business,” said Amy Emmerich, Refinery29’s chief content officer.

Exclusive: Star Thrower Entertainment has acquired rights to Bill Minutaglio and Steven L Davis’ book The Most Dangerous Man In America. In what I hear was a competitive situation, Tim and Trevor White’s Star Thrower bought the book, originally published in January and subtitled Timothy Leary, Richard Nixon and the Hunt for the Fugitive King of LSD, with plans to develop it into a limited series.
Based on freshly uncovered primary sources and firsthand interviews, The Most Dangerous Man In America follows Leary’s daring prison escape and run from the law in 1970. Aided by the Weather Underground, Leary’s prison break was the counterculture’s union of “dope and dynamite,” aimed at sparking a revolution and overthrowing the government. The ensuing global manhunt, led by President Nixon, spanned 28 months and wound its way among homegrown radicals, European aristocrats, a Black Panther outpost in Algeria, an international arms dealer,...

This month at the movies includes a pair of Elizabeth Olsen-starring films, thanks to two features exploring decidedly different release strategies. Of course there’s this week’s big budget blockbuster, “Avengers: Infinity War,” which features the actress reprising her role as the powerful mutant Scarlet Witch, but last week also saw the release of Mark Raso’s “Kodachrome,” which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year. The film, a low-key drama starring Olsen, Ed Harris, and Jason Sudeikis, was picked up by Netflix out of the festival.
Despite Olsen’s role in the billion-dollar Marvel Cinematic Universe, she’s stayed true to her indie roots over the years, continuing to worker on smaller films like “Wind River” and “Ingrid Goes West,” both of which debuted at Sundance last year. As the indie film distribution model continues to evolve and change, Olsen has become a staunch proponent...

Above: 1986 Japanese poster for She’s Gotta Have It (Spike Lee, USA, 1986).In the ten months since I last did a round-up of the most popular posters on Movie Poster of the Day, two things have happened. I’ve slacked off a bit: after running the site since November 2011 and posting one poster every single day for years, in the past year I’ve let my self-appointed task slide a little and have been posting more sporadically. And at the same time it seems that Tumblr is starting to atrophy. At its height my site had over 300,000 followers—it still does officially, but I would guess that a large percentage of those people are no longer still on Tumblr or rarely check their feed. I’m often asked why I don’t up sticks and move to Instagram instead, but while I love Instagram for personal stuff, Tumblr is still...

Director Max Winkler takes the “troubled teen” concept of Rebel Without A Cause and refreshes it by casting a 17-year-old girl as the teen. Flower is a film that at first looks like a trashy “bad girl” tale takes an unexpected detour into fresh territory, becoming an unexpected and affecting mix of dark humor and human drama leading to self-discovery and a satisfying end.
Director Max Winkler (Ceremony) took any unusual approach with what had been considered an un-producible script by young adult author Alex McAuley. The director re-worked the script with co-writer Matt Spicer (Ingrid Goes West) then hired as many women as he could for his film crew, including director of photography Carolina Costa, and actually actively listened to them, along with his lead...

If there’s one thing millennials are more obsessed with than social media, selfies and irreverent art, it’s ourselves. Occasionally we find an excuse to bring all four together, as Molly Soda does in her performance artwork, Matt Spicer managed with “Ingrid Goes West,” and now Eugene Kotlyarenko has succeeded in his latest directorial effort “Wobble Palace.” The feature follows a disintegrating relationship on Halloween weekend 2016, right before the most traumatic Presidential election of all time.

A breakthrough performance by a talented young actress is always a sight to behold. Last year at the Tribeca Film Festival, I saw Zoey Deutch own the screen in Flower. This independent picture has stayed with me for almost 12 full months, mainly due to Deutch’s captivating turn. She is riveting, to the point where I’m just as eager to fete her performance today as I was in the moments after that Tribeca screening ended last April. That’s the mark of a talented actress, and Deutch is certainly one. In fact, within the next few years, I’m sure I’ll be writing about her as an A-lister and potentially even an award winner. The movie is an indie black comedy/coming of age story. Erica (Deutch) is a troublemaking teen who, when we first meet her, is blackmailing a small-town cop after performing a sexual act on him.

It’s hard to know whether Erica Vandross, the 17-year-old at the center of Max Winkler’s “Flower,” is meant to be an a-hole we unexpectedly like or a likeable person who sometimes behaves like an a-hole, but Zoey Deutch’s performance constitutes one of the most curious mis-applications of natural acting charisma I’ve ever seen. Deutch, winning in a lot of films unworthy of her (“Why Him,” “Dirty Grandpa,” “Vampire Academy”), commands the screen as if the quandary doesn’t matter, while Winkler and co-screenwriters Alex McAulay and Matt Spicer construct a story that lurks somewhere between “Sixteen Candles,” “Palo Alto” and “Fish...
