Kelvin Harrison Jr., who voiced Taka, aka Scar, in Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King, has joined the ever-growing cast of Lionsgate’s latest installment of the Hunger Games franchise, the adaptation of the latest Suzanne Collins best-seller, Sunrise of the Reaping.
Glenn Close is also said to be circling a role in the feature, although sources say it’s unclear whether a deal can be struck on that front.
Reaping stars Joseph Zada as Haymitch Abernathy, with Whitney Peak playing Haymitch’s girlfriend, Lenore Dove Baird. The prequel story is focused on fan-favorite Haymitch, who in the original Hunger Games book trilogy (and movie quadrology) acted as a mentor to heroine Katniss Everdeen. (Woody Harrelson played Haymitch in the original Hunger Games films.)
Mckenna Grace and Jesse Plemons are also on the roll call of the production that has Francis Lawrence in the director’s chair.

Tom Cruise discusses filming A Few Good Men’s famous courtroom scene with Jack Nicholson. Going toe-to-toe with an Oscar-winner may not have been as dangerous as jumping out of an airplane, but future-daredevil Cruise nevertheless faced a major challenge as the star of Rob Reiner’s Aaron Sorkin-penned 1992 military courtroom drama, acting opposite one of film history’s most revered figures. The tension in Cruise and Nicholson’s big A Few Good Men showdown moment was as palpable as anything in the Mission: Impossible movies, the scene going down in history as an acting masterclass.
Cruise recently recalled shooting that 1992 hit film alongside Nicholson, discussing the veteran actor’s process, and praising the Oscar-winner’s thorough understanding of how to use his voice and body (via Deadline):
“He was finding his character. And you could see every movement slowed. He became more and more centered as we were going through it.

Pound for pound, "30 Rock" is one of the funniest TV shows ever made, and that's not hyperbole. If you've watched the show, you know for a fact that it's packed so densely with jokes that you might find yourself constantly rewinding episodes because you were laughing so hard at something that you completely missed five subsequent sight gags and throwaway lines. The show was created by Tina Fey, who, at that point, was best known for writing and acting on "Saturday Night Live," and ultimately, she and her co-showrunner Robert Carlock were encouraged to take her experience on "SNL" and turn it into the show that became "30 Rock." So, just in case you haven't watched it — or it's been a while — what's the general deal with "30 Rock?"
Well, Fey stars as Liz Lemon, the head writer of a frankly terrible-looking sketch show called "The Girly Show," or...

It has been nearly 14 years since Bennett Miller's brilliant sports drama "Moneyball" hit theaters. Based on Michael Lewis' book, "Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game," the film stars Brad Pitt as Billy Beane, a former MLB player and general manager of the Oakland Athletics, who attempts to assemble a competitive team with significantly less money than his rivals. With the help of Yale Economics graduate, Peter Brand (Jonah Hill), Beane scouts the MLB for undervalued players using a sabermetric approach to assembling a quality team.
"Moneyball" served as a thoroughly entertaining and compelling exploration into the behind-the-scenes machinations of baseball, rather than the formulaic sports movie approach following an underdog team's rise to the occasion against all odds. Much of the film's strengths are found within its script, which was originally written by Academy Award-winning screenwriter Steven Zaillian ("Schindler's List") and was rewritten by fellow Academy Award-winner...

It's a great week to be a fan of Hacks and The Studio. Awards Magnet hosts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to discuss the comedies' big episodes this week and how/if they affect their Emmy prospects.
On Hacks, Deborah (Jean Smart) and Ava (Hannah Einbinder) — spoiler alert! — finally reconcile after the former concedes she was wrong about the direction of her late-night show and begs Ava not to quit, promising she won't let her down. Whether she does or not remains to be seen, but the episode, titled "Mrs. Table," is a great showcase for Einbinder's comedic and dramatic chops, as Ava has a breakdown that includes tossing a branzino at a window and driving her car through a gate. Should this be her Emmy submission? And will it be enough to win?

Seth Rogen’s The Studio has confirmed being renewed for a second season by Apple TV+. This is testament to how well the show has been received with its star-studded appeal and satirical comedy, mocking some of Hollywood’s best-kept secrets. The show offers a perfect behind-the-scenes look at the Hollywood film industry, with Matt Remick, the newly appointed studio head for Continental Studios, juggling between creating movies that matter and movies that make money.
The series has garnered attention and praise across the globe, including some surprisingly high-profile cameos such as Charlize Theron, Martin Scorsese, and Ron Howard. However, I feel like certain things need to be addressed going into season 2, otherwise the show is doomed for failure.

Not all heroes wear capes, as evidenced by Zack Snyder in his recent cameo appearance in the critically acclaimed Apple TV+ series The Studio. The latest episode of Seth Rogen's satirical comedy-drama saw the lights, camera, and action move to a fictional Golden Globes ceremony, as Matt Remick (Rogen), the head of Continental Studios, desperately tried to get Zoë Kravitz to thank him in her award acceptance speech. Several other A-listers took to the stage, including Snyder, who took a hilarious shot at his Justice League "Snyder Cut."
Episode 8 of The Studio, "The Golden Globes," proved to be a star-studded affair, much like the annual awards ceremony itself, with celebrity cameos from Adam Scott (Severance), Quinta Brunson (Abbott Elementary), Jean Smart (Hacks), Aaron Sorkin (The West Wing), Ramy Youssef (Poor Things), and Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos, but Snyder's turn in the spotlight garnered big laughs from the crowd and viewers at home,...

The Apple TV+ series The Studio is known for featuring big-name filmmakers playing themselves. So far, the show has seen cameos from directors like Martin Scorsese (Flowers of the Killer Moon), Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind), Olivia Wilde (Don’t Worry Darling), Parker Finn (Smile), and Nicholas Stoller (Neighbors).
They all interact with Matt Remick (played by Seth Rogen), the new head of the fictional Continental Studios.
However, one of the latest episodes surprised fans with a cameo from none other than Zack Snyder. Unlike the other filmmakers, Snyder appears outside the studio setting. In episode 8, titled “The Golden Globes,” he shows up during a star-filled segment. The episode also features Adam Scott (Severance), Quinta Brunson (Abbott Elementary), Jean Smart (Hacks), Aaron Sorkin (The West Wing), Ramy Youssef (#1 Happy Family USA), and Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos.

Clark Gregg found worldwide fame and critical acclaim when he portrayed the role of Agent Phil Coulson in the 2012 film The Avengers. Although the actor had been portraying the role for a while in MCU movies, The Avengers gave him a platform to show his best.
What followed next was Clark Gregg receiving his own show within the MCU titled Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. His career skyrocketed, and the actor started getting bigger and better roles. But before all that, Clark Gregg had an iconic guest appearance in the 1999 show The West Wing.

The Studio’s Episode 8 is out, it’s called “The Golden Globes,” and it is another hilarious take on Hollywood and the politics, power, and ego games that come along with it. This time, the backdrop of the episode is the Golden Globe Awards, and it follows how Matt Remick, the head of Continental Studios, is desperately looking to be thanked in Zoe Kravitz’s speech.
The entire episode is a cat and mouse game of Matt trying to get a thank you in Zoe’s speech, for her film ‘Open’. What follows is a hilarious series of events that sheds light on the constant need for people in showbiz to be acknowledged and praised by their peers.
Hollywood’s obsessions with praise and recognition
The episode “The Golden Globes” has adequately shown how people in Hollywood have the innate need to be recognized and thanked, and appreciated for their contribution in huge award ceremonies.

If you ever wondered whether the Batman v Superman director is in on the joke, wonder no more. Zack Snyder—known for turning superheroes into tragic Greek gods and movies into extended cut marathons—popped up in Episode 8 of AppleTV+’s The Studio and delivered a cameo that’s equal parts self-deprecating and brilliant. Set during a fictional Golden Globes ceremony, the episode is stacked with celebrity appearances. Adam Scott, Zoë Kravitz, Ramy Youssef, Jean Smart, and Aaron Sorkin all show up playing exaggerated versions of themselves. But the loudest laugh of the night? That belonged to Snyder. As he takes the stage to announce an award, Zack Snyder drops the most Snyder line imaginable: “Thank you! Now for any of you who felt like the show has gone by too fast or who felt like it’s not nearly long enough, I’ll be releasing a 6-hour black and...

Our time on this planet is agonizingly brief, which, among other bummers, means that we'll leave loads of great movies unwatched. Ultimately, you've got to prioritize which filmmakers and types of films matter the most to you, while, and this is crucial, making sure you block out time to screen movies that are well out of your wheelhouse. Dive into the wilds of experimental cinema. Explore the many modes of African filmmaking. Acquaint yourself with Italian neorealism. The broader your horizons, the better you understand the lives and struggles of people in places you may never personally visit. As Roger Ebert once noted, movies are "empathy machines." Also, you might just find a new favorite filmmaker along the way (like I did with Chadian director Mahamat-Saleh Haroun via The Criterion Channel).

Andrew Garfield The Social Network (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Andrew Garfield once got a little too wrapped up in The Social Network, and it showed. The actor admitted he carried his character’s anger into a Golden Globes party weekend, leading to an “altercation” he still looks back on with a wince.
Garfield, who played Eduardo Saverin opposite Jesse Eisenberg’s Mark Zuckerberg, said filming The Social Network was an intense experience. Shooting kicked off in October 2009 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, under the sharp eye of director David Fincher and screenwriter Aaron Sorkin. The movie traced the true story of how Saverin and Zuckerberg’s friendship cracked under the weight of Facebook’s rise and millions of dollars.
Working with Fincher meant countless takes, which Garfield said pushed him to deliver raw performances. In an interview with Collider, Andrew Garfield explained, “One of the things I understand about why he does that...

Kiefer Sutherland can play the protagonist in the story, like Jack Bauer from 24 or Tom Kirkman from Designated Survivor. And he can easily slip into a cruel antagonist, like David from The Lost Boys or Freddie Lee Cobb from A Time to Kill. The variety of roles in Sutherland’s filmography, spread over more than four decades, speaks volumes about the actor.
However, there is one role for which we never appreciated Sutherland enough. In 1992, Sutherland took on the supporting role alongside the likes of Tom Cruise, Jack Nicholson, Demi Moore, and Kevin Bacon in A Few Good Men. He had a limited role in the film as Lt Jonathan Kendrick, but this villain performance of the actor was different from his others.

Amanda Peet isn’t necessarily interested in playing a long-suffering wife battling suburban ennui, so it’s a good thing she has a lead role as Mel on the Apple TV+ drama Your Friends and Neighbors from creator Jonathan Tropper (This Is Where I Leave You).
“A lot of times, when we see women in middle age, it’s sad, older women drinking white wine, lamenting the dating scene and, looking to get liposuction,” Peet tells Gold Derby. “The way Jonathan Tropper wrote Mel, she’s having great f--king sex, she’s torn between two men, and she’s keying a car — it just feels much more active and maybe less sad.”
Created by Tropper, Your Friends and Neighbors is a modern spin on domestic noir thrillers like Desperate Housewives and American Beauty. The show is focused on Andrew “Coop” Cooper (Jon Hamm), who in rapid succession loses his wife,...

As a novelist and screenwriter, Jonathan Tropper has a career many would envy. Trooper has written several significant feature films – including an adaptation of his novel This Is Where I Leave You — and created or written for multiple popular genre shows, including Banshee and Warrior. However, Your Friends and Neighbors is the first time he’s gotten to make the kind of television series that he always wanted.
“When I tried to sell TV 12 years ago, I was trying to sell shows like this, when nobody would buy them,” Tropper tells Gold Derby. “I ended up selling Banshee, and that put me on a track for the next 10 to 12 years of my life making action genre television. After years of very public health struggles, Olivia Munn had decided to stop acting in front of the camera. Then she heard about Your Friends and Neighbors.

The Studio producers Ike Barinholtz and James Weaver said Martin Scorsese agreeing to play himself in the premiere episode made it easier to get other celebrity cameos in the Apple TV+ series. The legendary filmmaker pitches studio head Matt Remick (Seth Rogen) a movie about the Jonestown cult and weeps openly when Matt later pulls the plug. Subsequent cameos include Sarah Polley, Olivia Wilde, Ron Howard, Zac Efron and more.
“It really came down to Martin Scorsese saying yes, and it all started from there,” Weaver said.
Casting director Melissa Kostenbauder added that there are artists in Hollywood who are not so game to act. They’re also busy making their actual projects.

Imagine working on a top-secret movie for years, only for the entire plot to hit the internet before the trailer even drops. Brutal, right? Movie scripts that were leaked or stolen have led to chaos behind the scenes. Some films barely survive the aftermath. Whether it’s from shady hackers, careless actors leaving scripts lying around, or straight-up betrayals from insiders, these leaks shake up the industry, and not always in a good way.
Some films barely survive the chaos. The Hateful Eight almost got scrapped entirely. Others have to do last-minute rewrites. Terminator Salvation had to ditch its controversial ending. Then there’s Deadpool, where leaked test footage actually saved the movie and convinced the studio to greenlight it. Talk about a plot twist.
With the internet moving at lightning speed, keeping a movie’s secrets under wraps is harder than ever. One leaked script can spark hype, ruin surprises,...

Ariana DeBose has clarified that she did not know she was quoting a criticism of her “West Side Story” co-star Rachel Zegler when she posted a quote reading “Narcissism is not something to be coddled or encouraged” in a since-deleted Instagram post Tuesday.
“I post quotes all the time and thought this one was meaningful. Will fully cop to the fact I did not do any research on where this quote came from, nor did I know of the connection until it was pointed out to me,” DeBose wrote on her Instagram story Tuesday evening. “I have no intention of inserting myself into a news cycle. This is not the first time I’ve posted about dealing with narcissism and it probably won’t be the last, but next time I’ll be sure to clarify its origins first.”

While The Social Network star Jesse Eisenberg might not want be involved in the same conversations as the Facebook founder, it seems Mark Zuckerberg, on whom the protagonist/antagonist is based, has no problem continuing the association.
On a recent episode of The Colin and Samir Show, whose podcast includes interviews with tech CEOs and delves into the creator economy, the Meta leader revealed that he had purchased one of the shirts Eisenberg wore in the dramatized film at auction.
While discussing the David Fincher-helmed and Aaron Sorkin-penned Oscar-winning pic, host Samir Chaudry asked if the shirt was the same as the one the A Real Pain director wears when Andrew Garfield’s Eduardo visits him in Palo Alto.
“Yeah, that’s true,” Zuckerberg replied. “One of my friends saw this online in an auction and was like, ‘You have to get this.’ So I was like, ‘All right,...

The most exciting part of movie-going for many is right before it starts, when you settle into your AMC Theaters recliner to watch Nicole Kidman remind us why we love the movies. Nevermind the popcorn, previews, or candy: Nicole Kidman makes movies better.
Of course, the actress has had a long and storied career prior to becoming the face of AMC Theaters. The Australian actress made her film debut at only 16-years-old, before her profile slowly began to rise in the late '80s and early '90s with films like "Dead Calm," "Days of Thunder," and "Billy Bathgate." By the end of the last decade of the millennium, Kidman had become an A-list celebrity, making tabloid headlines for her marriage with Tom Cruise, and even racking up Oscar nominations as an established and profitable movie star.

Producer Scott Rudin, who stepped back from the film and theater industry in 2021 after workplace abuse allegations, is planning his Broadway return.
The New York Times reported Friday that Rudin is developing a handful of Broadway productions. They include “Little Bear Ridge Road,” a play by Samuel D. Hunter that will star Laurie Metcalf from director Joe Mantello, for this fall; “Montauk,” a new play by David Hare also with Metcalf and Mantello, for next spring; and a revival of “Death of a Salesman” with Nathan Lane, Metcalf and Mantello for the following season.
Rudin was shunned from the industry after THR reported that Rudin threw items at employees, including a stapler and baked potato, berated staffers and threatened them with career retribution if they left his employment, and smashed a computer monitor on the hand of an assistant, sending him to the emergency room. What better way to write a love letter to Hollywood than to create a scathing comedy series that highlights and laughs at everything that's currently wrong with the film industry. That's exactly what Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg have done with The Studio, the new comedy series which just premiered on Apple TV+. With two episodes already available to stream, a flood of reviews have hit the internet, and the show's Rotten Tomatoes score has just been revealed. So, is The Studio a tentpole hit, or an underwhelming studio flop?
After a tidal wave of reviews, The Studio is an Oscar-caliber hit (or Emmys-caliber as it's a series), with the new show currently holding a near-perfect 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Not only has the show united most critics, it has also done so while scoring numerous 4/5 and 5/5 reviews. Peter Gray of The Au Review is one such critic who scored...

In 2011, it might have seemed like Jessica Chastain emerged out of nowhere as a formidable actress, when she appeared in no less than five movies -- including Best Picture nominees “The Help” and “The Tree of Life” -- and scored her first-ever Oscar nomination. But Chastain worked for years to get to that point, acting in plays from a young age and attending the prestigious Juilliard School. “I struggled for so long to try to create a career,” she told the New York Times in 2017.
In the decade since her breakout year, Chastain has received acclaim for a variety of different roles -- from her Oscar-nominated lead part in “Zero Dark Thirty” to her lauded supporting work in “A Most Violent Year” to even a superhero franchise with “X-Men: Dark Phoenix.” She’s worked alongside top filmmakers like Terrence Malick, Kathryn Bigelow, J.C. Chandor, Aaron Sorkin, Christopher Nolan and Ridley Scott.

Apple TV+’s The Studio aims to give audiences a peek behind the Hollywood curtain. Funnily enough, it was reported years ago that Seth Rogen had pitched an idea at HBO that pre-dated Entourage, but would be very similar in navigating the glamour of showbiz and would also intend to show some inside baseball on the film industry in Hollywood. Rogen gets to do it in a different fashion with his new TV series and, just like Entourage, there are cameos aplenty by a large number of people playing a version of themselves.
The Hollywood Reporter has just revealed the extensive list of who will be appearing in The Studio. If you’d rather be surprised by who shows up, you can probably consider these spoilers.

The Studio has revealed its full guest cast for the Hollywood sendup series co-created by Seth Rogen.
Rogen — also the lead actor, writer, director and executive producer on the Apple series about moviemaking — has taken to his director’s chair to announce the many guest stars in the comedy, which had promised A-list cameos in every episode. In The Studio, Rogen stars as Matt Remick, a newly appointed (fictional) head of the embattled Continental Studios who finds himself forever fighting and debating with his fellow creatives and demanding actors over whether art and commerce can coexist in Hollywood.
“I kind of viewed it like I was putting a band together,” Rogen explains in the new teaser, which briefly introduces a handful of characters played by some of the starry names below.
It had been previously announced that The Studio, along with Rogen, stars Kathryn Hahn, Catherine O’Hara, Ike Barinholtz and Chase Sui Wonders,...

Television dramas have been an important part of the average American's media diet for the last few decades, with people gathering around the television to catch the latest episode of their favorite shows every week. Television dramas exploded in the late-1990s when prestige television networks like HBO started producing high-quality programming to compete with feature films.
The crowning jewel of HBO's initial line-up, which included excellent series like Oz and Sex and the City, was undoubtedly The Sopranos, which is still considered the greatest television drama of all time. The few series that come close to the quality of The Sopranos are the ones that push the boundaries of serialized television, and brought audiences nuanced and complicated stories.

Jeff Daniels knew this scene had to hit hard. When Aaron Sorkin handed him the script, packed with sharp dialogue and high stakes, Daniels had just two weeks to lock it down. No pressure, right? But this wasn’t just any scene; it was a defining moment, the kind that could make or break a career.

Tom Cruise reached a milestone early in his career with 1992's A Few Good Men. The acclaimed legal drama added another genre to his impressive range of films.
Tubi is streaming 1992's A Few Good Men for free this April. This legal drama had a stacked ensemble led by Tom Cruise, Jack Nicholson, Demi Moore, Kiefer Sutherland, J.T. Walsh, and Kevin Bacon. The film was a box office hit, grossing $243 million against a $40 million budget. It also set a benchmark for the genre with its tense narrative and pacing, and the entire cast's performance was gripping. Released after Rain Man, Born on the Fourth of July, and Far and Away, A Few Good Men also showcased Cruise's serious acting. It's also a breakout film for Demi Moore, who up to that point was known for romantic dramas and rom-coms.

A line from Aaron Sorkin always pops into my head while watching shows like Long Bright River. During his run on The West Wing, he wrote, “The things we do to women.” The United States has the third-highest maternal death rate among developed nations. Opioid use has grown by 1,000% among women since 1999. Finally, one out of every six women will be sexually assaulted, and women have a higher likelihood of becoming homeless.
Long Bright River touches on all these subjects to paint a picture that no one wants for their daughter. Women who become addicted to drugs like heroin, a substitute for opioids, while living on the streets often turn to sex work to chase their next hit. That serves as the backdrop for an engaging story about a serial killer and a woman no one cares about.
