- Was a professional boxer. Fought thirteen rounds with 'Brown Bomber' Joe Louis in 1941. Boxed him again, for the heavyweight title on March 27, 1942.
- Fought Joe Louis twice for the World Heavyweight Boxing Title
- In 1942 became the last Jewish fighter to fight for the Heavyweight Title
- Compiled a 38-10 record with 27 knockouts.
- Knocked out future heavyweight champ Jersey Joe Walcott in 6 rounds
- Won his first 14 fights, 12 by knockout.
- Appeared as the giant on the cover of the Marty Gold LP "Hi Fi Fo Fum" (VIK LX-1133).
