Exclusive: Dominic Sessa, the 21-year-old rising star, didn’t win a Supporting Actor BAFTA Award Sunday night — that went to Oppenheimer’s Robert Downey Jr. — but he did pick up his first post-The Holdovers role that will see him starring with Rose Byrne in director Stephanie Laing’s drama Tow.
This news was confirmed by several sources over the BAFTA Awards weekend where your intrepid columnist attended more soirées than is healthy. The trick though is to go teetotal and guzzle down fruit juice: cranberry with a tear-drop of orange juice is the mocktail du jour!
My Deadline colleague, international editor Andreas Wiseman, revealed last week that Byrne is expected to star in the true-story Tow.
Bryne will portray Amanda Ogle, a homeless woman who slept in her 1991 Toyota Camry, who entered into a 369-day legal battle against a towing company that had impounded her car after it had been stolen.

The Oscars added a category for casting, and it’s about damn time.
The announcement of the new category, slated to debut in 2026 for films released in 2025, has been warmly received on social media by awards aficionados. Many consider it a long-overdue acknowledgment, especially since the Casting Directors Branch was established over a decade ago in 2013. However, this raises questions about future categories and if, when, and how they will be accommodated in an awards ceremony that aims to stay under three hours.
It’s important to note that the Academy has yet to commit to featuring the best achievement in casting award during the televised ceremony. Details regarding eligibility and voting for the inaugural award will be disclosed in April 2025, alongside the complete rules for the 98th Academy Awards. The presentation method will be determined by the Academy’s Board of Governors and its administrative leadership at a later date.

When Dominic Sessa found out he had been cast in Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers, he was a high school senior at the prestigious boarding school Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts and was in the middle of writing a paper about “Hamlet or something” for a teacher who rarely gave good grades and was “super hard to impress,” he says. It was a tiny bit of art imitating life, as Sessa had just discovered he would be playing a teen at a fictional institution not unlike Deerfield who develops a bond over one lonely Christmas with an irascible professor played by Paul Giamatti — who rarely hands out an A.
Sessa never ended up finishing the paper. “I remember just slamming my laptop shut,” he recalls. It seems unlikely that Giamatti’s Paul Hunham would ever give Sessa’s Angus Tully the benefit of the doubt, but in real life, Sessa got away with this academic lapse.

It’s wild that we don’t have more recognition for the art of casting. Casting directors have a guild with an Academy branch, but not their own Oscar category. While the work can often seem alchemical or opaque to outsiders, casting directors are really in the first line of storytellers who collaborate on a film; they have to see and expand on a director’s vision for the film’s world and find the actors who will embody what the filmmakers aim to create. So IndieWire is bringing back an old pre-pandemic feature to celebrate the storytelling work of casting.
We reached out to a number of the film industry’s top casting directors to ask them to nominate one outstanding work from this year. As it turns out, though, the casting directors we spoke to had lots of films with casting they loved this year. “Being asked to...

One of the most interesting things about two-time Oscar-winning director Alexander Payne‘s new movie “The Holdovers” that’s set in 1970 and ’71 is that it doesn’t just look like a period film but one that was actually shot back then and pulled from a vault more than half a century later. It has the old grainy look that films back then had. Even the Focus Features logo flashed at the beginning has a vintage appearance. It was all part of the plan to create a throwback feel. “God is in the details, as they say,” Payne says. “Don’t forget it’s what’s being shot that helps produce a convincing effect. So locations, production design, costume design, even selection of extras who have the right hair (all contribute). All of that’s important to produce a convincing period film. And then on the technical side, we did shoot digitally.

Dominic Sessa was a drama student at the private Deerfield Academy boarding school in Massachusetts who had just finished his fall play in 2021 when he found out that a casting director for a new film called “The Holdovers,” to be directed by Alexander Payne, was coming to his school to conduct auditions. “I jumped right on that and thought that’d be cool to be in the background,” he remembers, “maybe be at a desk in a classroom scene or something. But immediately, when I met the casting director Susan Shopmaker, she was really interested in something that I was bringing.” Mind you, Sessa had never so much as auditioned for an on-camera role before, much less co-starred in a feature. “I didn’t know how callbacks worked,” he admits, “so the fact they were asking me to audition again and again, I didn’t really fully appreciate how good a sign that was.

Alexander Payne brought his 1970-set dramedy The Holdovers to the Toronto Film Festival on Monday, and earned a rapturous ovation from the Princess of Wales Theatre audience on Monday.
But the Sideways director expressed sadness that he had come on stage alone and without his principal cast, led by Paul Giamatti and newcomer Dominic Sessa, owing to Hollywood actors strike restrictions. “It is, of course, heartbreaking that the actors and the screenwriter can’t be with us,” Payne said.
In The Holdovers, Giamatti plays a curmudgeonly private school instructor at a New England prep school who forms an unlikely bond with Angus Tully, a damaged, brainy troublemaker played by Sessa. Also unable to appear on stage is screenwriter David Hemingson, who also produces alongside Mark Johnson and Bill Block.

Long before she was Marvel fixture Wanda Maximoff, Elizabeth Olsen was a 20-year-old actor starting out as Martha, a damaged woman struggling to reassimilate back into normal life after escaping an abusive cult in “Martha Marcy May Marlene.” At the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, the indie thriller launched Olsen’s career, as well as filmmaker Sean Durkin’s, when it won the U.S. Dramatic Prize for Directing and scored a posh distribution deal from then-Fox Searchlight Pictures.
“Martha Marcy May Marlene” made back more than enough of its $600,000 budget after the Fox Searchlight acquisition, grossing $5.4 million during a fall 2011 run, while also garnering Olsen a number of film critics’ awards and nominations, and the film four Film Independent Spirit Award nominations. But it’s fascinating to look back at the sort of launchpad the movie proved to be, as it re-emerges in retrospect a veritable who’s-who of indie film,...

What Does Empathy Looks Like on the Big Screen?
If, as Roger Ebert has said, movies are a giant machine that generates empathy, what does it look like on the big screen and how do you encourage it in emerging writers and filmmakers? What implications would this have for the filmmaking industry amid a sea change in production deals and distribution? How does it affect the critical writing about films? What influences will it have for society as a whole? And is it tilting at windmills or who has done it successfully?

What Does Empathy Looks Like on the Big Screen?
If, as Roger Ebert has said, movies are a giant machine that generates empathy, what does it look like on the big screen and how do you encourage it in emerging writers and filmmakers? What implications would this have for the filmmaking industry amid a sea change in production deals and distribution? How does it affect the critical writing about films? What influences will it have for society as a whole? And is it tilting at windmills or who has done it successfully?
Chaz Ebert from The Roger Ebert Center and RogerEbert.com joins Jeff Skoll of Participant Media, a leader in telling important stories that matter; Ann Thompson of Indiewire, Thompson on Hollywood; John Sloss of Cinetic Media and Cameron Bailey, Artistic Director of the Toronto International Film Festival in a discussion moderated by Nate Kohn, Vice President of the Peabody Awards, and Festival Director of Ebertfest.

Ioncinema.com’s In the Pipeline is a monthly in-depth conversation about the decision making and creative process surrounding American independent film productions. It features first-time filmmakers who are moments from yelling “cut” or somewhere in post-production bliss. This month, we feature: Lance Edmands. Originally published January 24th, 2011; Factory 25 releases Bluebird in theatres Friday, February 27th.
If you live there, you know Maine is much more than just lobsters and lighthouses. Filmmaker, Lance Edmands, is going to introduce the rest of us to the local side of his home state in his feature film debut, Bluebird. Set in a small Maine town, it’s about a school bus driver who accidentally locks a young boy in a school bus on a cold winter night. The boy is taken to the hospital the next day. The story follows the aftermath of this tragedy and how it affects and changes the families involved.

Eric Lavallee: Name me three of your favorite “2014 discoveries” …
Antonio Campos: Black Mirror (TV series). People Who Eat Darkness (Book). Nilsson Schmilsson by Harry Nilsson (album).
Lavallee: Christopher Abbott plays the titular James White (he has also contributed to two other films in your canon). What facets/traits was Josh Mond looking for in his lead?
Campos: A better looking version of himself.
Lavallee: The Borderline Films crew have a knack for unearthing talent (we’ve seen the likes of Rosemarie DeWitt, Ezra Miller, Zoe Lister Jones, Elizabeth Olsen, David Call, Emory Cohen, Michael Stuhlbarg) make debuts parading through your films. Could you discuss the casting process and ultimately, are the roles assigned by a jury vote of three?
Campos: We trust our casting directors when they say someone is great. When it comes to actually auditioning, we’ve learned so much over the years from Susan Shopmaker on...

Not all of the films at the Sundance Film Festival can be winners. God’s Pocket, the feature film directorial debut of Mad Men‘s John Slattery, is a mildly competent film that outside of a few visual gags and famous actors, doesn’t manage to do anything of note or really impresses at any turn.
God’s Pocket is a movie about a blue-collar town filled with crazy characters whose lives can’t help but intersect after Leon Scarpato (Caleb Landry Jones) is killed in a construction “accident.” Mickey (Phillip Seymour Hoffman) just wants to bury his son, but financial troubles and his wife’s (Christina Hendricks) insistence that the death wasn’t an accident force him to address much of his circumstance and deal with his crumbling life. In addition to this, he has to deal with a friend (John Turturro) who has...
