Those who fought in World War II are considered the Greatest Generation. And executive producers Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg and Gary Goetzman paid homage to these young men who risked life and limb during the global conflict in their award-winning 2001 HBO series “Band of Brothers” and 2010’s “The Pacific.” And now they’ve taken to the not-so-friendly skies in their latest World War II series, Apple TV +’s “Masters of the Air.”
Created by John Shiban and John Orloff, “Masters of the Air” is based on the 2007 book: “Masters of the Air: America’s Bomber Boys Who Fought the War Against Nazi Germany,” the series starring Austin Butler focuses on the 8th Air Force’s 100th Bomb Group stationed in England. It was known as the “Bloody Hundredth” because of the high causalty rate.

Anne With An E is a beloved television series based on Lucy Maud Montgomery‘s classic novel, Anne of Green Gables. The show follows the imaginative and spirited Anne Shirley as she navigates life in the idyllic town of Avonlea. Along with its captivating storytelling and stunning visuals, the Anne with E lessons resonates with viewers of all ages. This Netflix original is not a mere tale of an orphan’s journey in the 1900s. Instead, it is the story of persistence and the importance of a positive outlook. The series tackles complex social issues, such as racism, gender inequality, and bullying. It...

Do you know when the first movie premiere in Hollywood history was held?
On Oct. 18. 1922 Sid Grauman opened his movie palace the Egyptian Theatre on Hollywood Blvd. with superstar Douglas Fairbank’s latest swashbuckler “Robin Hood.” The red carpet was rolled out for Fairbanks, his wife Mary Pickford and their good friend (and partner in United Artists) Charlie Chaplin. It cost 5 to attend the premiere. And the movie, which was the top box office draw, played there exclusively for several months. The Egyptian cost 800,000 to build and took 18 months to complete for Grauman and real estate developer Charles E. Toberman. It is currently being renovated by Netflix in cooperation with the American Cinematheque.
“Robin Hood,” directed by Allan Dwan, was one of the most expensive movies of the silent era, costing just under 1 million. The castle was the biggest set ever made for a silent movie. Some scenes feature over 1,200 extras.

The death of actress-activist Marsha Hunt this week is a historical watershed and a personal loss. Marsha was one of the last living actors who began her movie career during the Great Depression in 1935. She became part of a now vanished Hollywood, initially at Paramount then at MGM, that bound contracted talent to studios with artists having little to no say over their choice of roles and careers. Nevertheless, she thrived in the studio system by becoming somewhat less than a genuine movie star and more of a consummate professional actress.
Marsha’s career was derailed by the Blacklist, a perfidious period of American history that has been endlessly chronicled and misunderstood. Never a Communist or radical, she was a forthright liberal who refused to accept her voice being marginalized by the endemic sexism and politics of the period. Marsha was the final survivor of the Committee of the First Amendment,...

For its final season, Stranger Things has gone super-sized. Its episodes are longer, its storylines are multiple, its locations are further flung, and its cast has expanded beyond all reasonable measure. Even allowing for the usual body count replacement rate to fill in the gaps left by last season’s victims of the Upside Down, there are a lot of new faces.
To orient us through the new crowd, here’s an introduction to high school students Eddie, Chrissy, Jason, Argyle, Patrick, Angela, Vickie and their counsellor Ms Kelly; military types Dmitri and Lt. Oscar certainly loves mothers. All five of this year’s Best Actress nominees — Jessica Chastain (“The Eyes of Tammy Faye”), Olivia Colman (“The Lost Daughter”), Penelope Cruz (“Parallel Mothers”), Nicole Kidman (“Being the Ricardos”) and Kirsten Stewart (“Spencer”) — play mothers. Ditto four out of five supporting nominees: Jessie Buckley (“The Lost Daughter”), Judi Dench (“Belfast”), Kirsten Dunst (“The Power of the Dog”) and Aunjanue Ellis (“King Richard”); the fifth contender is Ariana DeBose (“West Side Story”).
Actresses love getting maternal sinking their teeth-and sometimes claws-into mother roles whether they be good, bad, ugly or downright evil. Here’s a look at some early memorable mother performances that made Oscars history.
The mother of all mothers was Ruth Chatterton. Though she is not as well-remembered as other actresses from the Golden Age of Hollywood, she was extremely popular in the late 1920s and early ‘30s. Though no nominations were officially announced for the second annual Oscars,...

What makes film noir so fascinating? There are a lot of components that come into play with noir films, but cynicism, suspenseful music, a mysterious plot, figures lurking in the shadows, femme fatales, and fedora-wearing detectives are some of the staples of the classics.
Film noir, or “dark cinema,” was first coined by a French film critic in 1946 to describe the downtrodden themes in American movies. Although the term wasn’t widely adopted by American directors until years later, the ’40s and ’50s are regarded as a classic era that produced pioneering noirs such as “The Maltese Falcon” and “Double Indemnity.”

While by no means a tell-all, Miss Americana, Taylor Swift's new Netflix documentary, opens up on topics the musician has long kept private, from her relationship with Joe Alwyn to her eating disorder. It's a political project as well, showcasing her growing commitment to speaking out against injustice. But as a long-time Swiftie who's excited about her political awakening, one moment in the documentary worried me: Taylor's confession about her aging stardom, particularly her acceptance that she probably doesn't have much time left as an artist. She seemingly nails down this message with "Only the Young," her new anthem about the power of the youth to enact change - to "run."
"Women in entertainment are discarded in an elephant graveyard by the time they're 35."
"We do exist in this society where women in entertainment are discarded in an elephant graveyard by the time they're 35," Taylor candidly narrated. She explained...

Netflix's Anne With an E has run out of kindred spirits. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the drama will conclude with season three. On Nov. 24, the season three finale aired on Canada's CBC, which gets the airing rights before the rest of the world; in all other markets, it's available as a Netflix exclusive. The third and final season will debut on Netflix early in 2020. It's the latest in a long line of shows that, infamously, are cancelled by Netflix after completing a three-season run.

“Anne of Green Gables” returns for its final installment of the planned trilogy with “Fire and Dew,” in which Canada’s famed literary orphan starts taking the first steps into adulthood. Having fully embedded herself with the Cuthberts at Green Gables, Anne Shirley (Ella Ballentine) leaves home to seek out better opportunities and higher learning in Charlottetown.
The adaptation of Lucy Maud Montgomery’s novel “Anne of Green Gables” was split into three chunks, which means the first movie was buoyed by Anne’s discovery of a new life filled with wonders, while the second followed her hilarious scrapes as she truly became part of the Avonlea community. Thus, the final movie carries the burden of concluding the story. That is reflected in how the energy feels dialed down, but it is also about Anne being more of an adult, and thus the fun of her mishaps and outlandish imagination are missing.

Anne Shirley and her beloved Green Gables are being introduced to a new generation thanks to Netflix's period drama Anne With an E. As any fan of the book series knows, Prince Edward Island is the home of Green Gables and Anne's many childhood adventures. The stunning island was also where author Lucy Maud Montgomery wrote the novels, which were first published in 1908. Gorgeous though it may be, Canada's Prince Edward Island is relatively small, and, according to thelocationguide.com, it doesn't offer a great deal of tax incentives for filmmakers. As a result, filming there full-time would be pricey for an ongoing series - and that's exactly why the series is primarily shot in a different, and much more affordable, Canadian city.

With Thanksgiving comes the return of Canada’s most famous literary orphan to PBS with the second “Anne of Gables” installment. “The Good Stars,” the second film in a trilogy, continues the adventures of poor orphan girl Anne Shirley (Ella Ballentine), who’s finally found a home with elderly couple Matthew (Martin Sheen) and Marilla Cuthbert (Sara Botsford) at Green Gables. When last we saw Anne, she had settled into her new home and made a bosom friend out of Diana (Julia Lalonde). Taking on the adolescent phase of Lucy Maud Montgomery’s Edwardian novel series, “The Good Stars” parallels the growing pains that Anne herself is going through as she becomes a teenager.

Mother-daughter relationships have always been the stuff of great drama. And the Oscars are no exception. Three decades ago the “Moonstruck” acting duo Olympia Dukakis and Cher both won gold for playing a strong-willed New York Italian mother and her feisty daughter. Six years later, as a mute Scottish teacher and her de facto interpreter in New Zealand, Holly Hunter and Anna Paquin repeated that twofer triumph with Jane Campion’s “The Piano.”
Onscreen mother-daughter conflict has resulted in other dual Academy Award nominations: selfless Barbara Stanwyck tricked Anne Shirley into marrying rich in tearjerker “Stella Dallas” (1937); Meryl Streep’s big mouth inspired a rebellious Julia Roberts in “August: Osage County” (2013); Piper Laurie was literally crucified by Sissy Spacek in “Carrie” (1976). At the start of this decade, Mo’Nique won an Oscar portraying the sexually abusive parent of fellow “Precious” nominee Gabourey Sidibe. Back in 1984, both Shirley MacLaine and...

In the overcrowded TV landscape, it’s easy to fall behind on even favorite shows. This past spring has been particularly overcrowded with must-see series jockeying for awards attention.
But now that the official season has come to a close, that gives some breathing room to check out other series that premiered over the past season. For one reason or another, these shows may have been overlooked or maybe started off on the wrong foot and lost viewers’ attention. It happens. Even TV critics haven’t gotten around to watching some of the best shows due to time constraints and Peak TV.

“Stranger Things” and “Anne with an E” wouldn’t appear to have much in common. But both Netflix series boast iconic and impactful opening sequences created by the same design studio.
Imaginary Forces creative director Alan Williams, whose company earned lauds for its minimalist title design for “Stranger Things,” reached out to Netflix again when he learned that the streaming service was adapting the novel into a series, “Anne with an E.” Like many, Williams grew up captivated by Anne Shirley, the heroine from author Lucy Maud Montgomery’s book “Anne of Green Gables. The lonely orphan had an indomitable spirit, wild imagination, and affinity for the natural world that she brought with her to Green Gables, where she finally found a home.

Megan Follows’s breakthrough role was Anne Shirley in Anne of Green Gables, which was a Canadian TV show based on the book of the same name so successful that it was translated into a number of languages for a number of other countries. The fact that she reprised the role for two sequels just cemented her role as the character. However, it is interesting to note that she has had numerous roles in movies, TV shows, and theater productions since that time, meaning that her acting career has consisted of much more than just one TV show. Here are five

Once Netflix decided to change the title of its “Anne of Green Gables” reboot from plain old “Anne” (ugh!) to “Anne with an E,” it proved itself to be a true “kindred spirit” to the poor literary orphan girl.
The beloved character from Lucy Maud Montgomery’s Canadian children’s novel “Anne of Green Gables,” on which the series is based, insists upon that particular spelling of her name because of its elegance. That insistence is also indicative of Anne Shirley’s boisterous personality, which demands that she be heard, that people pay attention, that she is special. Fortunately, Netflix listened and along with settling on a fitting title, the streaming service has also crafted a unique adaptation that is simultaneously faithful to the source material in appearance and story, while expanding the story to comment upon the ills of 1900s rural Canadian society. Showrunner/writer Moira Walley-Beckett (“Breaking Bad,...

While I've heard the name Anne Of Green Gables before, somewhere, I must confess I've never read the novel. The story recounts how Anne... Read More...

Anne Shirley’s fake freckles have got to go.
Of all the faults in PBS’ “Anne of Green Gables,” these are the most glaring and, well, in your face. The spots stand out in stark contrast to actress Ella Ballentine’s clear complexion, and in each scene the viewer is often caught up marveling at the freckles’ uniformity instead of paying attention to the dialogue or action.

It’s a testament to Ballentine’s talents then that she is able to overcome those distractions and present a very charming, sprightly and chatty Anne Shirley, the literary orphan made famous in Lucy Maud Montgomery’s children’s novels. This ability is in keeping with the heroine herself, who is always melodramatically lamenting her red hair and plain looks but just can’t stop herself from...

“Isn’t it nice to think that tomorrow is a new day with no mistakes in it yet?” — Anne Shirley, “Anne of Green Gables”
Let’s hope Netflix keeps it that way. Upon learning the news that the streaming service is rebooting the beloved Canadian children’s book series from the 1890s into another TV show, fans simultaneously cheered and feared. Both Lucy Maud Montgomery’s “Anne” novels and the 1980s miniseries adaptations are some of the most beloved Canadian exports ever (sorry not sorry, Justin Bieber).
