Colin Firth will headline Lockerbie, a Sky drama about the real-life tragedy. Here are some details about the production…
Rightly or wrongly, the British television industry often uses true life tragedies as the basis for drama. As proven with Gwyneth Hughes’ brilliant Mr Bates And The Post Office, such dramas, when done right, can provoke discussion on a national scale.
The latest true-life tragedy to make its way to the screen is Lockerbie, which will chronicle the aftermath of the horrific events of the 21st December 1988, when a bomb caused Pam Am Flight 103 to crash over the Scottish town, killing 270 people.
Scottish playwright David Harrower, whose film Una, based on his play Blackbird, is well worth seeking out, will act as lead writer, with Maryam Hamidi writing an episode. They adapted their scripts from the book The Lockerbie Bombing: A Father’s Search For Justice, which Swire co-wrote with Peter Biddulph.

Line of Duty producer World Productions is making the six-part series in association with MGM Television and Night Train Media. It was developed by MGM and Night Train alongside filmmaker Adam Morane-Griffiths, who initially brought the project to the partners alongside Sara Curran back in 2020.

Since he was nominated for both an Oscar and a BAFTA (which he later won) for his scene-stealing supporting performance in The Banshees of Inisherin, there’s been much talk about Barry Keoghan’s inspiring rise to fame.
As will likely be etched into Irish folklore as his Hollywood trajectory continues its sharp ascent, the Dubliner — born in one of the city’s most disadvantaged neighborhoods — would spend seven years in foster homes as a child. It was only around 2008, aged 16, when Keoghan’s love of movies was piqued by an ad in a shop window looking for actors for a new crime drama that was being shot locally. Three years later, he landed a role in Irish TV series Love/Hate (which would become a breeding ground for young Irish talent), followed by 2014’s indie hit ‘72, before breaking out internationally in 2017 with both Dunkirk and The Killing of a Sacred Deer.

Here’s a first look at Jonathan Rhys Meyers as The Clash’s Joe Strummer in director Derrick Borte’s London Town.
In 1970s London, a 14 year old boy is introduced to The Clash by his estranged mother and it changes his life forever.
Strummer died suddenly at age 50 on December 22, 2002 in his home at Broomfield in Somerset, England, from an undiagnosed congenital heart defect. Rolling Stone voted London Calling, the Clash’s classic 1980 album (released in 1979 in the UK) as the best album of the Eighties. Their 1982 song Should I Stay Or Should I Go was their biggest Us hit.

Not to be confused with Asif Kapadia’s acclaimed documentary about the late singer that released earlier this year, Screen Daily has revealed that a second Amy Winehouse biopic has entered pre-production. Irish filmmaker Kirsten Sheridan (Dollhouse, August Rush) will write and direct the biographical feature, which has its crosshairs placed on The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo starlet Noomi Rapace to assume the title role.
Understood to be in the very early stages, source close to the project claim that Rapace is “in talks” to star as the record-breaking songstress, who tragically passed away from alcohol poisoning in July 2011. She was 27. No word yet on an official title for the new drama, though we imagine it won’t stray too far from the instantly recognizable – and therefore easily marketable – name of the late soul singer.

It's been four years since Amy Winehouse tragically passed away, all too young, at the age of twenty-seven, but 2015 has been something of a celebration of her life. Earlier this year, Asif Kapadia released his documentary "Amy" which spun the tale of singer's life with carefully constructed archival footage, and now, Winehouse is getting the big screen biopic treatment. Read More: Review: Asif Kapadia's Powerful Amy Winehouse Documentary 'Amy' Screen Daily reports that Noomi Rapace ("Prometheus," "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo") is in talks to player the artist in the untitled picture. Kirsten Sheridan ("August Rush") has written the script and will direct the picture that will tell the tale about the singer's life. The all important music rights are currently being negotiated, but as we've learned from other biopics that have spent years in development, it's not always an easy process to sort out, especially when estate's get.

One of the top 25 grossing documentaries of all-time, we called Asif Kapadia‘s Amy “a devastating, infuriating and sometimes breathtaking watch,” one that “finds some startling truths lurking behind all the music, tabloids and nonsense” when it comes to the late singer’s downfall and tragic death. On the heels of the successful film’s digital release, word has now arrived her life will once again be seen on screen, this time in biopic form.
According to ScreenDaily, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and Prometheus star Noomi Rapace is currently in talks to take the role of Amy Winehouse in a forthcoming biopic. Jim Sheridan‘s daughter Kirsten Sheridan (August Rush) has completed a script which she’ll direct and plans are underway to license the late singer’s music. Derick Borte is busy directing the film now in London, working from a script by Kirsten Sheridan, Sonya Gildea and Matthew Brown. It’ll follow the story of a 14-year-old (Huttlestone) in 1970s London whose life is changed forever when his estranged mother (McElhone) introduces him to the music of the Clash.Whether this one will have an easier ride than Rude Boy is not yet clear, though Screen International reports that the film has secured the rights to a number of their hits, so the music should be authentic at least. What makes some film soundtracks transcend from mere background music to helping a director tell a story and help invoke an emotional response? Is it a clever mix of well chosen tunes that capture the zeitgeist or an eclectic mix of older material that either captures a time and place or sets a tone of nostalgia? The answer varies depending on the feature film. 2012 was a fantastic year for original motion picture movie scores but not so good for soundtracks. Still, Simon and I have managed to pull a list of what we feel were the very best.

I don’t’ share the popular opinion that 2012 has been a terrible year in film. It hasn’t been as strong as previous years but 2012 gave us such gems as Holy Motors, The Master, Berberian Sound Studio, Tabu, Skyfall and Moonrise Kingdom, to name a few. As with every year, I thought it appropriate to highlight some of the year’s most memorable individual moments, scenes, and sequences, from movies that may or may not have made our individual year-end lists. Which is no small feat considering just how insane the release calendar has become.
We are keeping out credit sequences since we feel it is an art form in itself.
Honourable Mentions:
The Deep Blue Sea – The underground flashback.
Oslo, August 31st – The cafe scene.
Miss Bala – The extended take during the shoot out .
Universal Solider 4 – The opening shotgun sequence.
Universal Solider 4 – The fight in the sport retail store.
