It’s been 30 years since Chris Farley’s Tommy Callahan first told David Spade’s Richard Hayden character to “shut up” in 1995’s Tommy Boy. The comedy featuring the SNL alums has become a cult classic over the years, but never received a sequel.
During an appearance on Theo Von’s This Past Weekend Podcast, Spade explained why he passed on the opportunity to do a sequel. "I was pitched a Tommy Boy 2, which was... our kids are together," the actor said. "And I'm like, 'I just can’t find a scenario with no Farley,'" he said, referring to his co-star who died at the age of 33 in December 1997.
Spade explained that the pitch focused on the character's children. "[It was supposed to be about] our kids, and it was about them, and then I was going to come help them on the road or something," he shared. But Spade passed on the movie, because...

David Spade recently announced that he turned down the sequel to his cult comedy from 1995, Tommy Boy. Created through a collaboration of Saturday Night Live actors, it became a pivotal point in the careers of both David Spade and Chris Farley. The story revolves around the late auto parts factory owner's unqualified son, who must fight his money-grabbing family to save the company. Tommy Boy celebrated its 30th anniversary in March 2025. Director Peter Segal has emphasized Chris Farley's importance to the franchise, which explains why Spade won't be in a sequel.
Spade expressed his hesitancy to accept the offer in an episode of Theo Von's podcast, where he explained he turned down the offer for a sequel. David Spade and Chris Farley were SNL co-stars for years before their collaboration on Tommy Boy, during which time the pair developed a close friendship. Spade has spoken fondly of his co-star,...

As much as David Spade probably needs a break from Dana Carvey interrupting him on the Fly on the Wall podcast, he knows the idea of a Tommy Boy sequel without Chris Farley is immensely dumb.
“I was pitched a Tommy Boy 2, which was our kids are together,” Spade told Theo Von this week on the comedian’s This Past Weekend podcast. “I was pitched it two years ago. And I’m like, I just can’t find a scenario with no Farley.”
Von, the comic with the Joe Dirt haircut, tried to imagine how producers could get around the problem. Would they recreate Farley with CGI? Hire one of Farley’s brothers?
The focus would have been on the original characters’ kids, Spade explained. “And then I was going to come help them on the road or something. But listen, the magic in the bottle was Chris. I had a good part.

Released in 1995, Tommy Boy has gone on to become a comedy movie staple and cult classic. Starring Saturday Night Live castmates and close friends David Spade and Chris Farley, the film played off of their undeniable chemistry and likely wouldn't work if one person were taken out of the equation. This could be why a sequel never came to fruition, given the passing of Farley in 1997 from a drug overdose at the age of 33. Still, that didn't stop Spade from receiving a pitch for a sequel, and he's now revealing his response to a potential Tommy Boy follow-up.
During an appearance on Theo Von's podcast, This Past Weekend, Spade reveals that he was pitched an idea for Tommy Boy 2, and it's something he turned down without hesitation because he can't imagine a sequel without Farley. Let’s be honest, friends—comedy doesn’t get much better than Leslie Nielsen with a badge and a straight face. The Naked Gun franchise isn’t just funny; it’s the kind of funny that has you pausing the movie because you’re laughing too hard to catch the next joke.
Nielsen’s portrayal of Lieutenant Frank Drebin redefined parody cinema forever, creating a blueprint for absurdist humor that countless films have tried (and mostly failed) to replicate.

These movies strike that perfect balance where the jokes come so fast you’ll miss half of them on your first viewing. That’s right—these films aren’t just good for a laugh; they’re comedic institutions that reward repeat viewings with hidden gags you somehow missed the first dozen times.

Photo Credit: Paramount Pictures In a movie career cut far too short, Chris Farley will probably best be remembered for his comedic tour de force performance in Tommy Boy. The film, which paired him with fellow Saturday Night Live star David Spade, celebrates its 30th anniversary today, and it now relishes its status as a cult film that has only grown over time. Before the film was released, we spoke with Farley about the project, and he told us why the combination of co-star Spade and director Peter Segal made Tommy Boy the most fun he’d ever had making a movie. Paramount is currently celebrating the 30th anniversary release of Tommy Boy, and for good reason. It's a comedy classic that has held up over the years (despite Roger Ebert's crushing review), its iconic star Chris Farley is getting a big biopic from Josh Gad, and it has a new 4K Uhd release that's visually stunning and full of great special features. Its director, Peter Segal, took some time to travel down memory lane with MovieWeb and look back at the film. He even shared more about a specific behind-the-scenes moment that, in his commentary track for Tommy Boy, he said was "too R-rated" to discuss.
The moment in question was one of several takes during the endlessly quotable "housekeeping" scene, when David Spade pretends to work for the motel the characters are staying at. "You know, we always tried different jokes. And when Chris was answering the door for David's 'Housekeeping,...

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the 1995 comedy classic "Tommy Boy," and while a handful of moments in it don't hold up to modern comedy sensibilities, the film is still largely a hilarious and surprisingly heartfelt story about a lovable loser tasked with saving his family's small-town auto parts company. Though Chris Farley had appeared in a handful of movies already, "Tommy Boy" was the first starring role for the "Saturday Night Live" superstar on the big screen, and despite the intense pressure of their schedules, he and fellow "SNL" star David Spade carry the film on their shoulders as their characters trade insults and ultimately go from annoyed acquaintances to genuine friends over the course of the story.
Since "Tommy Boy" was his first big movie, Farley wasn't prepared for the level of mental stamina required to lead a feature film.

Drew Barrymore is taking her Instagram followers on a trip down memory lane to celebrate the 21st anniversary of her beloved rom-com 50 First Dates. On Instagram, Barrymore shared a sweet throwback from the film, featuring co-star Adam Sandler. The 2004 movie, directed by Peter Segal, follows Barrymore's Lucy Whitmore, a woman with short-term memory loss. Sandler's Henry Roth had the romantic (and unique) task of making her fall in love with him again and again... and again. Barrymore's Instagram post, captioned "Throwing it back" with a tag for Sandler, features the pair in costume from the iconic scene where Henry serenades Lucy with "Forgetful Lucy."

50 First Dates landed in theaters on February 13, 2004, and was a box office success, grossing nearly $200 million worldwide. While it didn't exactly impress critics (the film holds a 45% rating on Rotten Tomatoes), the chemistry between Sandler and Barrymore was undeniable.

Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore's second rom-com together is climbing the streaming chart, as 50 First Dates sits at number five on the Prime Video chart. It's a great Valentine's Day date night movie and has plenty of charm and emotion. The movie follows a vet in Hawaii named Henry (Sandler) who falls for Lucy (Barrymore) with short-term memory loss. Basically, she forgets everything that happened the day before when she wakes up.
Her father and brother, played by Blake Clarke and a hilarious Sean Astin, are very protective of Lucy. Since she's "stuck" in the day she lost her memory in an accident, they attempt to play along with the idea that she wasn't in an accident. But love blooms between Henry and Lucy, despite his having to woo her constantly.
The film opened 21 years ago, on Feb. 13, 2004, just in time for Valentine's Day, and became an instant crowd-pleaser...

Stephen King is an opinionated fellow. Stroll through the fiction aisles of your local bookstore and examine the covers of newish novels, and you probably won't have to search long to find one bearing praise from Stephen King -- which is touching because, in this age of distracted everything, it's nice to see one of the world's most prominent authors exhorting people to lose themselves in a book.
King isn't always a ray of sunshine though. He's infamous for his dislike of Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining" film adaptation, and hasn't held back on other cinematic interpretations of his novels. And when Entertainment Weekly started giving King column space in its printed pages back in the mid 2000s to rant and rave about all things pop culture, he was unsparing with his hatred for the latest music by Jewel, Beyoncé, and Celine Dion while also unloading both barrels on prestige...

Jack Nicholson was already a major star before he played the Joker in 1989's "Batman." But his unprecedented deal with Warner Bros. for that particular blockbuster netted the actor more than $50 million and made him one of the wealthiest performers in Hollywood — not to mention one of the most influential. After somehow wangling a portion of the profits from both the box office and merchandising revenues from "Batman," Nicholson set a new precedent for big-name performers moving forward. The actor also basically ensured that "Batman" never actually turned a profit for Warners even though it became a box office smash.
When "Batman" debuted in the summer of 89, it arrived amid a public frenzy dubbed "Bat-mania" by the media. Audiences were clamoring for director Tim Burton's take on the Caped Crusader, which promised to restore the "Batman" property to its dark roots and deliver a serious take on a...

Ryan Reynolds thinks one of Eddie Murphy's comedic performances was overlooked by the Academy. During a recent appearance on Variety's Awards Circuit podcast, the Deadpool & Wolverine actor shared that Murphy not receiving an Oscar nod for his multi-character work on The Nutty Professor is one of the "greatest, most, greatest injustices." When asked what he considered the greatest Oscars snub of all time, Reynolds shared:
"One of the greatest, most, greatest injustices is that Eddie Murphy doesn't have an Oscar for 'The Nutty Professor.'"
The Murphy-led comedy is a remake of the 1963 movie of the same name that starred Jerry Lewis. Directed by Tom Shadyac, the 1996 version sees Murphy tackle seven different roles, including Professor Sherman Klump and his charming but devious alter ego Buddy Love. Drew Barrymore has revealed the surprisingly dramatic original ending to one of her and Adam Sandlers most beloved movies. Barrymore and Sandler first demonstrated their intoxicating chemistry in 2004s romantic comedy 50 First Dates, and to celebrate the movies 20th anniversary, Barrymore revealed on The Drew Barrymore Show how the story almost ended on a very downbeat note.
In a surprising series of revelations, Barrymore revealed that the rom-com classic was initially titled 50 First Kisses and describes the project as a drama set in Seattle. But the most surprising reveal is the original ending, which would not have given Barrymores Lucy Whitmore, who suffers from short-term memory loss after an accident, and Sandlers Henry Roth the happily ever after that audiences wanted.
Something that always sticks in my mind is the original ending of 50 First Kisses, as it was called at the time. Yeah, it was a drama set in Seattle.

Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler’s “50 First Dates” is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, and the former dropped a surprise revelation on her eponymous daytime talk show by sharing the original ending to the 2004 romantic-comedy classic. The film was not supposed to end in with a definitive happily ever after for main characters Henry (Sandler) and Lucy (Barrymore).
“Something that always sticks in my mind is the original ending of ’50 First Kisses,’ as it was called at the time,” Barrymore said. “Yeah, it was a drama set in Seattle. The original ending was her saying, ‘You should go and live your life, because this is no life here. And he goes away, as he does, and he comes back and he walks into the restaurant and he just sits down and says, ‘Hi, I’m Henry.’ And the film ends.”
Barrymore’s co-host Ross Matthews reacted to the revelation by saying: “Honestly,...

Dave Bautista's career has seen highs with roles like Drax in MCU, but the sequel to "My Spy" is a misfire due to lack of acting challenges. "My Spy: The Eternal City" failed to capture the magic of its predecessor, leading to low ratings and disappointing reviews for Bautista. Bautista's recent success in dramatic roles shows his potential, but "The Eternal City" falls short and lacks top-tier filmmaking to push him to greatness.

He may not be fighting in the ring anymore, but Dave Bautista still has some moves in his back pocket.
The WWE alum confirmed that he snuck his signature Bautista Bomb into a fight scene in his new action comedy sequel My Spy: The Eternal City, which is now available to stream on Prime Video.
“I just wanted to put it in,” Bautista told ComicBook.com. “We were working on that fight scene and I was like, ‘Oh man this would be fun.’ And now, it’s kind of become my obsession. I’m trying to squeeze it into every film just because. It’s one of those Easter eggs. I think if I can get it into every film, I will. It’s just a nod to my career. A nod to the fans.”

Anna Faris Would Return to the ‘Scary Movie’ Franchise Under Two Conditions: ‘Money’ and Regina Hall

Anna Faris would reprise her role as Cindy Campbell in the “Scary Movie” franchise, so long as a few conditions are met.
In an interview with People, Farris was asked what it would take for her to return to the franchise for a new installment, to which she emphatically replied, “Well, money!”
She went on to say that she’d “love to reprise her role” if she could star alongside her former “Scary Movie” co-star, Regina Hall, who played Brenda in the horror parody film series.
“I would love to work with Regina again. I just love her so much,” Faris said. “We would make each other giggle all day long. Regina Hall would be my answer. And money. But mostly all Regina!”

Plot: When Sophie’s high school choir is selected for an Italian tour culminating in a performance for the Pope in Vatican City, JJ sees this as an opportunity to bond with his new stepdaughter, so he volunteers to help chaperone the group through the Venetian canals, across Florence’s renowned bridges and into Rome’s most historic sites. Instead he finds that he and Sophie have become unwitting pawns in a terrorist plot that could end the world as we know it.
Review: My Spy originally debuted at the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic after being pulled from release in August 2019. With mediocre reviews, the Dave Bautista-led action-comedy was solid family entertainment when audiences sorely needed new things to watch. Four years later, Dave Bautista and Chloe Coleman have reunited for a sequel that is bigger and better than the original but still nowhere near as good as it should be.

The James Bond jetpack sequence in “Thunderball” (1965) was a cheesy-awesome thing that was like, “Whoa! The future will be jetpacks!” “My Spy the Eternal City” opens like a Bond film, or maybe a movie whose goal is to make the “Kingsman” series look weighty. Dave Bautista’s JJ, a former Special Forces soldier turned CIA operative, is on a private plane, where he’s playing bodyguard to a teen idol named Ryan (Bill Barratt). Out of the blue, he’s attacked by the flight attendant. As they go at each other with sharp objects, a helmeted figure zips through the sky in a jetpack, placing a bomb on one of the plane’s windows and blowing a hole in its side; everyone comes tumbling out, and a plunging-to-the-earth scuffle ensues.
The hook? The jetpack flier is Sophie (Chloe Coleman), a 14-year-old spy. While falling through the air and rescuing JJ,...

My Spy: The Eternal City gets edgier and naughty in a serviceable sequel with a legitimate whopper reveal. The original cast returns on an Italian mission that pits Dave Bautista and Chloe Coleman against a mysterious nuclear terrorist. But the dynamic duo faces an equally formidable opponent, adolescence, which threatens their cherished bond. Teenage girls go boy crazy, demand their space, and don't want to be lectured by lame parents. Being an elite spy just isn't as cool when hormones are raging for a dreamy classmate with an impressive high falsetto.
Five years later, JJ (Bautista) has embraced living with Sophie (Coleman) and Kate (Parisa Fitz-Henley) in domestic bliss. He's happy as a CIA desk analyst, much to the consternation of his tech support partner, Bobbi (Kristen Schaal), and their boss, David Kim (Ken Jeong). He wants his best operative kicking butt in the field, not baking sugar-free scones. Bobbi...

Decorated filmmaker Pete Segal is no stranger to comedies or sequels, but My Spy The Eternal City is far from his best of either. Writers Jon Hoeber and Erich Hoeber (alongside Segal) uphold the calcified pillars of Hollywood sequels, but their continuation hardly presents like an upgrade. What was once an undercover romantic comedy about a peewee spy in training and her hulking protector is now a generic espionage comedy filled with exhausting stereotypes. The cast welcomes tantalizing additions, the film relocates overseas, and theres a stronger sense of danger which would mean something with tighter execution. Yet My Spy The Eternal City deceptively lacks ambition despite European cityscapes and recognizable celebrity faces, failing to reassure that Prime Videos My Spy has franchise legs.

If most sequels tend to feel like hastily rewritten versions of the original, why can’t the same rules apply to reviews of said sequels? In preparation for viewing and critiquing Peter Segal’s “My Spy the Eternal City,” this critic returned to her own review of the first film, the spring 2020 streaming hit “My Spy.” Within that review: a number of ideas, thoughts, and opinions that could easily transfer over to this first sequel, with minimal edits.
For instance, in “My Spy,” star Dave “Bautista and a genuinely cute kid co-star can’t enliven this predictable and humorless entry into a micro-genre long due for a refresher.” Still true. Co-star Chloe Coleman and “Bautista are wonderful together — appealing, warm, and well-matched — but ‘My Spy’ just can’t capitalize on that chemistry.” We did ask for it. The plot? The “only clear plot points being the ones already done to...

Peter Segal’s completely disposable 2020 action comedy My Spy was an entry into the microgenre featuring a strongman action star playing bodyguard to an irascible child. The film’s sequel, My Spy the Eternal City, embraces the equally hoary clichés of comedies revolving around stepparents, with Dave Bautista’s C.I.A. operative JJ adjusting to domesticity with the now-teenaged Sophie (Chloe Coleman) and her mother, Kate (Parisa Fitz-Henley), while struggling to relate to the girl as a parent and not merely a protector.
Naturally, JJ’s attempt to live a simpler life doesn’t last long, and when he elects to be a chaperone for Sophie’s choir on a trip to Italy, he finds himself embroiled in a convoluted scheme involving a terrorist plot after one of Sophie’s classmates, Collin (Taeho K)—who just so happens to be the son of JJ’s C.I.A. boss,...

The follow-up to 2020’s action comedy, My Spy, My Spy: The Eternal City, reunites Dave Bautista and Chloe Coleman in a feel-good family adventure set in some of Europe’s most storied destinations.
When Sophie’s (Coleman) high school choir is selected for an Italian tour culminating in a performance for the Pope in Vatican City, JJ (Bautista) sees this as an opportunity to bond with his new stepdaughter, so he volunteers to help chaperone the group through the Venetian canals, across Florence’s renowned bridges and into Rome’s most historic sites. Instead, he finds that he and Sophie have become unwitting pawns in a terrorist plot that could end the world as we know it.
Directed by Pete Segal and featuring returning stars Ken Jeong and Kristen Schaal, who are joined by Anna Faris, Craig Robinson and Flula Borg, My Spy: The Eternal City will premiere globally on Amazon Prime on July 18th.

Dave Bautista and Chloe Coleman are back in My Spy: The Eternal City, and here’s the trailer for the film.
My Spy was a fun family comedy that landed on Amazon Prime in 2020 after being delayed by the events of that year. It also made the cover of one of our junior magazines too. It was the third most watched streaming film of the year after Hamilton on Disney+ and Borat Subsequent Moviefilm on Prime Video.
Following in the footsteps of similar ‘tough guy action star does a family comedy’ – a surprisingly crowded subgenre with the likes of Vin Diesel in The Pacifier, Jackie Chan in The Spy Next Door and Hulk Hogan in Mr Nanny – My Spy followed Dave Bautista as CIA operative JJ, who is assigned to keep watch on a family and is soon discovered by their precocious nine year old daughter, Sophie, played by Chloe Coleman.
