Ethan Hawke and Margaret Qualley in Blue Moon (2025)
Richard Linklater’s Blue Moon Secures October Release Amid Cannes Spotlight
Ethan Hawke and Margaret Qualley in Blue Moon (2025)
Sony Pictures Classics has scheduled Blue Moon, Richard Linklater’s latest film, for release on October 17 in New York and Los Angeles, with a broader rollout planned for October 24. The biographical drama centers on lyricist Lorenz Hart, one half of the iconic Rodgers and Hart songwriting duo, during a pivotal evening in 1943.

Set almost entirely at Sardi’s Restaurant, the film unfolds on the night Oklahoma! premiered on Broadway—Rodgers’ first collaboration with Oscar Hammerstein II after parting ways with Hart. Ethan Hawke plays Hart, who reflects on his legacy and confronts the emotional toll of professional displacement. The cast includes Margaret Qualley, Bobby Cannavale, and Andrew Scott.

The story takes place over a single night, capturing the personal and artistic reckoning of a man witnessing the reshaping of American musical theater without his involvement. Hawke and Linklater, long-time collaborators, team up for the ninth time on this project. Their...

When every block in New York tells a story of her own bad behaviour, the only solution is to take a job in London, where she plans to live a life of solitude like a Bronte sister. The film is being described as the most dangerous case yet. After this mystery gets solved, Johnson is not looking to return to the genre immediately. He has shared recently that his next project after Knives Out 3 won’t be a murder mystery.

A new set of interesting cast members joins Craig’s Benoit Blanc in the upcoming threequel. The big names hint that this film, too, will have a long list of suspects like Knives Out and Glass Onion. The cast includes Mila Kunis, Josh Brolin, Glenn Close, Andrew Scott, Jeremy Renner, Cailee Spaeny, Josh O’Connor, Kerry Washington, Daryl McCormack, and Thomas Haden Church.

The Correct Order To Watch Jean-Claude Van Damme's Universal Soldier Movies
Image
Throughout humanity's long, sad, and seemingly endless history of making war, there has existed a naggingly evergreen question about making the perfect soldier. In a pre-technological age, this question was largely psychological, yet the advent of advanced tech started to open up more possibilities, as well as lead to more dead-ends. To wit: while fully replacing human soldiers with robots would initially seem ingenious, it could also lead to things like malfunctions and the absence of human reasoning and ingenuity. Yet a robot, loaded with a pre-made algorithm, doesn't need to be retrained, and isn't susceptible to the many vulnerabilities a human being is. Surely, there must be a way to combine the two.

Roland Emmerich's 1992 sci-fi action film "Universal Soldier" took this recurring military frustration and turned it into thoughtful genre entertainment. Although Emmerich and his writers (with his old filmmaking partner Dean Devlin chief among them) knew...

Jeremy Renner Says Filming 'Knives Out 3' Was "Like a Marvel Movie"
Image
Hawkeye actor Jeremy Renner is switching out his bow and arrow for a little cloak and dagger, as he is starring in Netflix's Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, the third Benoit Blanc whodunnit from Rian Johnson. There are very few details about the central case that Daniel Craig's renowned detective will be investigating, leaving audiences to search for clues and breadcrumbs of information — but it's all very hush-hush, even for the cast, as Renner recently compared the project to being "like a Marvel movie" due to its secrecy.

During an appearance on Josh Horowitz's Happy Sad Confused podcast, Renner was quizzed about whether he would be starring as himself in the third Knives Out mystery after he technically made an appearance in Glass Onion (by way of a fictional bottle of hot sauce named "Renning hot" that had his face plastered on the label...

"It's Like a Marvel Movie": Jeremy Renner Dishes on 'Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery'
Image
Jeremy Renner may be best known for playing Hawkeye in the MCU, but don’t be surprised if his next iconic role is… Jeremy Renner? The actor recently stopped by Happy Sad Confused to promote his memoir My Next Breath, but naturally the conversation turned to his upcoming role in Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, the third film in Rian Johnson’s hit whodunnit series. And yes — after Glass Onion made “Jeremy Renner’s hot sauce” canon in the Knives Out universe, Renner still finds himself hilariously navigating that meta mess.

“So we had a great conversation about a year ago… I was joking with you about your hot sauce cameo,” host Josh Horowitz recalled. “And I said the one downside, Jeremy, thinking I’m so smart — one downside, obviously, is you can’t be in a Knives Out movie because it’s canon. Jeremy Renner is in that universe.

Megan Thee Stallion & Other A-Listers Break ‘No Phones’ Rule At Met Gala To Take A Selfie
Image
At the 2025 Met Gala on Monday, rapper Megan Thee Stallion took the ultimate risk and snuck her phone into the high-profile event.

The Met Gala famously has a strict no-phone policy, with Vogue explaining the goal to keep the event “largely under wraps.”

However, Megan Thee Stallion disregarded the rule and posted a video of her, rap queen Doechii, and WNBA star Angel Reese feasting on fancy appetizers, including truffle lobster rolls, caviar and vegan lox.

She laughed, “We’re not supposed to have our phones, but we’re doing it.”

While there is no information regarding any potential punishment or consequences for using phones at the gala, Megan Thee Stallion was not the only celebrity who ignored the rule.

Sydney Sweeney, Halle Bailey and Lisa all posed for a selfie together. Angela Bassett and Tara Shahidi also shared a photo of the evening, as well as Questlove, Kim Kardashian and Jaden Smith.

“Took me by surprise”: Andrew Scott Had No Idea He’d Outshine the Entire ‘Sherlock’ Cast in Just Two Scenes
Image
Hot priest? True Sherlockians know Andrew Scott as something far more sinister—a consulting criminal with a flair for theatrics, moral bankruptcy, and an unsettling fixation on the world’s only consulting detective. Long before his Emmy nod for the slippery antihero Ripley, Scott perfected the art of chaos back in 2010 as the consulting criminal who gave Cumberbatch’s Holmes a run for his intellect—and sanity.

With a smirk and a whisper, he turned Moriarty into a masterclass in villainy. It was Scott’s big boom on the map, and he’s only climbed higher since—now headlining prestige TV, award-worthy films, and electric stage turns.

From mind games in London to moral gray zones in Italy, he’s still three steps ahead. The game, as ever, is on.

Rian Johnson: I Want Netflix to Put ‘Knives Out 3’ in ‘as Many Theaters for as Long as Possible’
Image
Rian Johnson is determined to have Netflix “wake up” to the current rise in in-person movie-going. Johnson, whose third “Knives Out” film “Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery” will be released this fall, told Business Insider that amid the theatrical successes of “Sinners” and “A Minecraft Movie,” Netflix should have no qualms releasing “Knives Out” on the big screen.

“I think theatrical is not going anywhere,” Johnson said. “We’ve seen, if you put a movie people want to see in the theaters, they are going to show up for it, and that experience of being in a full house and having that experience is so important. It’s something that I love and I want more of in the world.”

He added of “Wake Up Dead Man,” “I want this in as many theaters for as long as possible. We’re going to push for everything we...

Image
With Paul Mescal officially set to star in a 2027 production of A Whistle in the Dark,a co-production between London’s National Theatre and Dublin’s Abbey Theatre, industry chatter suggests the Abbey is now eyeing two more major Irish stars: Saoirse Ronan and Andrew Scott. According to the Irish Mail, the Abbey hopes to secure Ronan and Scott for future productions. Neither actor is confirmed, but sources say theatre leadership is eager to build on the momentum of the Mescal announcement by securing additional A-list talent. Ronan, who was raised in Co. Carlow, has limited professional stage experience despite her decorated film career. She made her theatre debut in The Crucible on Broadway in 2016–17 and later played Lady Macbeth in a West End production...

Rian Johnson Calls for Full Theatrical Rollout of Wake Up Dead Man
Rian Johnson
Director Rian Johnson has made clear his preference for a wide theatrical release of Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, the third film in his popular whodunit series. His comments come as Netflix leadership signals a shift away from traditional moviegoing models.

Johnson, speaking to Business Insider, addressed the distribution plans for the upcoming release. “I want this in as many theaters for as long as possible,” he said. “We’re going to push for everything we can get in terms of theatrical because I want as many people as possible to see it in that form.”

The remarks were prompted by comments from Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos, who described the movie theater model as outdated for much of the audience. During an appearance at the TIME100 Summit, Sarandos said, “I believe it is an outmoded idea, for most people — not for everybody.” He acknowledged the appeal of...

Rian Johnson Wants 'Wake Up, Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery' in as Many Theaters "as Possible" Despite Netflix CEO Comments
Image
Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos recently drew the ire of the internet with his comments last week at the Times100 summit, where he called the theater system "an outdated concept" and claimed his streamer was actually "saving" the industry by delivering big-budget affairs directly to homes. One person who wildly disagrees, however, is one of the biggest-name creators in the platform's employ — Rian Johnson. The director signed up to deliver two sequels to his wildly successful Knives Out after reaching a $400 million deal with the service back in 2021, but the downside was made clear in 2022, when Glass Onion only got a limited one-week release before being locked to the platform. With his third and potentially final installment, Wake Up Dead Man, set to premiere this year, he's now speaking out about his desire for a much wider and longer run in theaters from Netflix.

Johnson recently sat down with Business Insider...

Rian Johnson Says ‘I Don’t’ Agree With Netflix CEO Over Movie Theater Model Being ‘Outdated’: I Want ‘Knives Out 3’ in ‘Many Theaters For as Long as Possible’
Image
Rian Johnson recently told Business Insider while promoting “Poker Face” Season 2 that he wants the next “Knives Out” movie, “Wake Up Dead Man,” to be released in as many movie theaters as possible. Whether Netflix delivers on this wish later this year remains to be seen. Johnson’s interview came in the wake of Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos stirring up controversy online by calling the movie theater model “outdated.”

“Obviously I don’t [agree],” Johnson said when asked to respond to Sarandos’ comment. “I love movies. I love going to see movies. But also, I have a feeling talking to Ted, it would be a different thing than one quote taken and kind of tossed at me in this context. So, I don’t want to phrase this as I’m having a proxy discussion with Ted right here.”

“I think theatrical is not going anywhere,” the filmmaker added, pointing to...

‘Knives Out’ Director Rian Johnson Teases the Franchise's Future After ‘Wake Up Dead Man’ [Exclusive]
Image
Back in 2019, Knives Out was a welcome addition to the murder-mystery genre. The pairing of a detective with a peculiar personality and a cast of deliciously evil suspects made for a highly entertaining whodunit, and Netflix was quick to pick up on it and order two sequels. Now that Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery is close to premiering, though, fans can't help but wonder: Is this the last we'll see of Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig)? During a new interview with Collider for the second season of his whodunnit series Poker Face, director and screenwriter Rian Johnson talked about the future of the franchise.

Johnson told Collider's Christina Radish that the excitement to keep going is still there. However, he also revealed that there are other projects he wants to work on. The filmmaker also teased that, much like Glass Onion was wildly different from the first movie,...

Jeremy Renner Details “Tiny But Monumental Slip Of Mind” That Caused Life-Changing Snow Plough Accident
Image
Jeremy Renner has shared that one “tiny but monumental slip of the mind” caused his snow plough accident, in which he suffered multiple life-changing injuries.

In an extract from his forthcoming memoir published in The Times of London newspaper, the Hawkeye actor detailed how he was working with his nephew Alex to clear the snow from outside his Lake Tahoe home on New Year’s Day 2023. Renner had been driving in the cab of his large snowcat when he realised his nephew was in danger of being crushed by the vehicle.

Renner writes:

“Before exiting the driver’s cab! — Apply parking brake,” the manual says. But I didn’t engage the parking brake, or disengage the steel tracks. In that moment — an innocent, critical, life-changing moment — that tiny but monumental slip of the mind would change the course of my life for ever.

“My feet lost their grip on the moving tracks,...

The Top 10 Best Black Mirror Episodes of All Time
Image
On the occasion of the release of the most recent season of Black Mirror, we decided to look back at the show to see what our favorite episodes are. From its origins on British cable to its days as an international phenomenon on Netflix, Black Mirror has had plenty of great episodes that make it challenging to narrow down our ten favorites.

Admittedly, this list might ruffle a few feathers. Some very popular episodes, like season three’s Shut Up and Dance, just missed the cut for us, while others, like The Entire History of You, we think are rather overrated.

So what do we think are the top 10 episodes of Black Mirror?

Image
by Cláudio Alves

Highest 2 Lowest will bring Denzel Washington to Cannes for the first time since 1993.

Thierry Frémaux and company have announced the 78th Cannes Film Festival lineup, with many familiar faces returning to the Main Competition. Former Palme d'Or victors Julia Ducournau and the Dardenne brothers are back in the race, while Golden Bear champion Carla Simón will present her first feature since Alcarràs took Berlin by storm. Speaking of the German fest, Richard Linklater just directed Andrew Scott to an award there and will now bow his Nouvelle Vague at the Croisette. Juliette Binoche will preside over the jury to decide these filmmakers' fates, but we're still awaiting updates regarding the other jurors.

Our own Elisa Giudici will be on the ground covering the fest for The Film Experience as she's been doing for the past few years. I'll try to offer another edition of Cannes at Home for those battling cinephile Fomo.

Richard Linklater’s Nouvelle Vague and Blue Moon Set Fall Releases
Image
After releasing two films last year with Hit Man and the rather-overlooked God Save Texas: Hometown Prison, the ever-prolific Richard Linklater returns in 2025 with two more features. Earlier this year he premiered Blue Moon at Berlinale. Now Sony Pictures Classics, in the official CinemaCon program guide, has confirmed a fall release window for the drama.

Described as “a funny Valentine to old Broadway,” here’s the synopsis: “On the evening of March 31, 1943, legendary lyricist Lorenz Hart confronts his shattered self-confidence in Sardi’s bar as his former collaborator Richard Rodgers celebrates the opening night of his ground-breaking hit musical Oklahoma!“

Meanwhile, Linklater looks to have locked his next feature Nouvelle Vague, his tribute to the French New Wave and chronicle of the making of Breathless, directed in the style of Jean-Luc Godard’s landmark debut. While it’s still seeking U.S. distribution, French distributor Arp Sélection has confirmed an...

Sarah Snook Goes Fantastically Wilde In ‘The Picture Of Dorian Gray’ – Broadway Review
Image
The Picture of Dorian Gray

Opening night: March 27, 2025

Venue: Broadway’s Music Box Theatre

Written by: Oscar Wilde

Adapted and Directed by: Kip Williams

Performer: Sarah Snook

Camera Operators: clew, Luka Kain, Natalie Rich, Benjamin Sheen, Dara Woo

Running time: 2 hrs (no intermission)

Deadline’s takeaway: If only Oscar Wilde were alive to offer up a pithy description of Broadway’s playful The Picture of Dorian Gray starring the remarkable Succession actor Sarah Snook, because this is a production that most of us will need more than a few words to convey all of its exuberant theatrical dazzle.

Equal parts acting masterclass, tech wizardry, illusion and clockwork stage management, all costumed and set designed with the wit and color schemes of the most vivid Cindy Sherman photographs, Dorian Gray marks audacious Broadway debuts by both Snook and director-adaptor Kip Williams.

So what if the use of video cameras on stage is already bordering on cliché,...

Cameron Diaz Proves She's Still a Major Star as Her Latest Movie Joins a Prestigious List
Image
Netflix is one of the largest streaming services, and, aside from having other licensed titles on its platform, it has also created a name as a studio. Its titles often feature high-profile actors, and despite some of them not often enchanting both the critics and the audience, the streamer has had an amazing few months.

One of the titles that received major success recently is Cameron Diaz's Back in Action. The action comedy, which stars Diaz and Jamie Foxx as retired spies, also comes with a tongue-in-cheek reference to the actress' long break from acting. Per Tudum, the break didn't stop her from continuing to be one of the biggest action stars, as Back in Action joined Netflix's prestigious Most Popular Movies list.

Diaz's last film was 2014's Annie, and then she took a break to focus on her personal life. Her co-star, Foxx, persuaded her to come back to acting,...

The Twilight Zone is one of the most brilliant and trippy series ever made. Created by Rod Serling, the CBS series is a virtual and psychologically thrilling trip into the unknown. The Twilight Zone premiered over six decades ago, and it still holds up very well as far as the stories and the visual experience go. Ireland’s Film & TV Production Tax Credits: A Big Pot Of Gold For Indies – SXSW
Image
At a time when California is looking up its tax credits to $750M annually, there’s some serious competition from across the pond, and that’s Ireland.

The Taoiseach of Ireland/Prime Minister of Ireland Michael Martin was here in Austin, TX on Monday along with Cinetic CEO John Sloss, The Astronaut filmmaker Jess Varley, and Irish producer Tristan Orpen Lynch to share the great experience of not only shooting in the country of leas and cliffs, but also the extremely competitive tax credit.

Sloss recently produced the Richard Linklater Berlin premiere, Blue Moon, over in Ireland, in addition to Varley with her SXSW world premiere The Astroanaut, and Lynch with his drama series Mix Tape.

Currently the Irish tax incentive for the screen industries, Section 481, provides a tax credit of up to 32% on eligible Irish expenditures based on 80% of a pic’s budget. That will soon rise to 40% for productions under 20 million Euros.

Hollywood’s Top 25 Power Stylists 2025: The Red Carpet Visionaries Behind Zoe Saldaña, Glen Powell, Charli Xcx, Cynthia Erivo and Troye Sivan
Image
Red carpet styling can’t make a bad movie good, but it can make a good one hard to ignore. An attention-grabbing look can center a project in an elevated conversation that can drive box office, awards and, yes, clothing sales.

That’s because of stylists. Out of the hundreds of red carpet tastemakers working in Hollywood, the ones on this list — coincidentally THR’s 15th since debuting the franchise in 2011 — are selected based on several factors. Because this is The Hollywood Reporter, the star power of the clients the stylists work with, the aesthetics they present on the red carpet, and the influence they wield — note Law Roach and Zendaya getting the internet to obsess over every Challengers fit — are paramount. And let’s be honest: Saint Laurent received more attention from Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldaña on the red carpet than from actually producing Emilia Pérez, the film they were in.
