From Sony Pictures Classics, Oscar-nominated Linklater’s newest film chronicles Hart’s (Ethan Hawke) final days, who was part of the songwriting team Rodgers and Hart, on the opening night of “Oklahoma!” in 1943.

The news comes in a week when Linklater’s Nouvelle Vague is making its world premiere at Cannes.

The movie stars Ethan Hawke as Hart, as well as Margaret Qualley, Bobby Cannavale and Andrew Scott in the final days of the legendary musical scribe. The movie is set primarily in Sardi’s Restaurant on March 31, 1943, the opening night of Oklahoma!, Rodgers’ first collaboration with Oscar Hammerstein II as Hart’s replacement.

The film, which premiered at the Berlin Film Festival, stars Linklater’s longtime collaborator Ethan Hawke in the actor-director duo’s ninth film together. It follows the final days of Lorenz Hart, the first collaborator with famed songwriter Richard Rodgers before his more famous partnership with Oscar Hammerstein. Jeremy Renner has shared that one “tiny but monumental slip of the mind” caused his snow plough accident, in which he suffered multiple life-changing injuries.

In an extract from his forthcoming memoir published in The Times of London newspaper, the Hawkeye actor detailed how he was working with his nephew Alex to clear the snow from outside his Lake Tahoe home on New Year’s Day 2023. Renner had been driving in the cab of his large snowcat when he realised his nephew was in danger of being crushed by the vehicle.

Renner writes:

“Before exiting the driver’s cab! — Apply parking brake,” the manual says. But I didn’t engage the parking brake, or disengage the steel tracks. In that moment — an innocent, critical, life-changing moment — that tiny but monumental slip of the mind would change the course of my life for ever.

Exclusive: Bobby Cannavale (Unstoppable) and comedian Fortune Feimster (Fubar) are the newest additions to the cast of Amazon MGM’s untitled new comedy starring Will Ferrell.

Character details are under wraps. We were first to report on the project, hailing from writer-director Nicholas Stoller, who’s reunited with Ferrell following their work on the Amazon MGM wedding comedy You’re Cordially Invited.

In the new film, Zac Efron co-stars as a young convict fresh out of prison who takes a reality TV courtroom hostage, blaming the megalomaniac TV judge (Ferrell) for a past ruling that he feels ruined his life. Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Michael Peña, Jimmy Tatro, Billy Eichner, and Regina Hall will also feature in the ensemble, as previously announced.

Producers on the project include Stoller for his Stoller Global Solutions, as well as Ferrell, Jessica Elbaum, and Alex Brown for Gloria Sanchez Productions.

On the occasion of the release of the most recent season of Black Mirror, we decided to look back at the show to see what our favorite episodes are. Highest 2 Lowest will bring Denzel Washington to Cannes for the first time since 1993.

Thierry Frémaux and company have announced the 78th Cannes Film Festival lineup, with many familiar faces returning to the Main Competition. Former Palme d'Or victors Julia Ducournau and the Dardenne brothers are back in the race, while Golden Bear champion Carla Simón will present her first feature since Alcarràs took Berlin by storm. Speaking of the German fest, Richard Linklater just directed Andrew Scott to an award there and will now bow his Nouvelle Vague at the Croisette. Juliette Binoche will preside over the jury to decide these filmmakers' fates, but we're still awaiting updates regarding the other jurors.

Oscar nominee Josh Brolin (No Country for Old Men) is in talks to star in Whalefall, a new film from 20th Century and Imagine Entertainment. Per Deadline, Austin Abrams (Wolfs)is set to co-star in the film that is described as “The Martianmeets 127 Hours.”

Whalefall is based on the Daniel Kraus novel of the same name and is set to be directed by Brian Duffield (Cocaine Bear)who will co-write the script with Kraus. The movie will center around a scuba diver who is searching for the remains of his deceased father. The diver gets swallowed up by an 80-foot, 60-ton sperm whale and has just one hour to escape before he runs out of oxygen. After he gives up on life, the young man finds himself surprised to find he has a reason to live in “the most dangerous and unlikely of places.”

Exclusive: As the drama biz convenes in Lille for Series Mania, Marco Bassetti, CEO of Europe-based indie production and distribution heavyweight Banijay Entertainment, tells Deadline about his billion-dollar ambition in scripted.

“I think that we are going to reach close to €1Bn [$1.1Bn] of business in scripted next year,” Bassetti says in an exclusive interview. “From where we started to where we are today, we are the biggest European producer in scripted. We are happy about what we have done.”

The Banijay boss is referencing a European Audiovisual Observatory report that ranks Banijay as the top independent producer in Europe terms of number of titles with 53 for 2023 (the latest measurement period), and in terms of the number of countries productions are originated in, 11.

Bassetti says there is still space to grow that drama footprint. “If you look at where we stand with our unscripted business, we are pretty big in many countries.

At a time when California is looking up its tax credits to $750M annually, there’s some serious competition from across the pond, and that’s Ireland.

The Taoiseach of Ireland/Prime Minister of Ireland Michael Martin was here in Austin, TX on Monday along with Cinetic CEO John Sloss, The Astronaut filmmaker Jess Varley, and Irish producer Tristan Orpen Lynch to share the great experience of not only shooting in the country of leas and cliffs, but also the extremely competitive tax credit.

Sloss recently produced the Richard Linklater Berlin premiere, Blue Moon, over in Ireland, in addition to Varley with her SXSW world premiere The Astroanaut, and Lynch with his drama series Mix Tape.

Currently the Irish tax incentive for the screen industries, Section 481, provides a tax credit of up to 32% on eligible Irish expenditures based on 80% of a pic’s budget. That will soon rise to 40% for productions under 20 million Euros.
