Herbig-Matten recently rose to international fame with her starring role in Maxton Hall, Prime Video’s series adaptation of the hit novel from Mona Kasten, which in May “achieved the largest first-week global viewership for an International Original in Prime Video history,” per the streamer, and was quickly renewed for a second season.

In the show from Germany’s UFA Fiction, which occupied the #1 spot of the Prime Video charts in more than 120 countries and territories, the actress plays Ruby, who unwittingly witnesses an explosive secret at her private school Maxton Hall. The arrogant millionaire heir James Beaufort (Damian Hardung) then has to deal with the quick-witted scholarship student, for better or worse. Berlin Film Festival Off to a Political Start as Three Protests Precede Opening Ceremony
Image
After kicking off with a feisty press conference, the Berlin Film Festival got even more political as three groups of protesters descended on Potsdamer Platz before the start of opening night festivities.

The first saw around 50 members of the film industry walk the red carpet holding hands. The demonstrators then turned on their phone flashlights and chanted “defend democracy!” while the same phrase was displayed on the Palast’s big screen. The red carpet’s music was turned off for the occasion, and the demonstrators wore pins stating “movies unite, hate divides.” Berlinale organizers had planned this demonstration to highlight their decision to disinvite members of the far-right political party AfD.

Among the talent was Jonathan Berlin, Meret Becker, Luisa Gaffron, Pegah Ferydoni, Roshanak Khodabakhsh Anne Leppin, Jannis Niewöhner, Murali Perumal, Katja Riemann, Lavinia Wilson and Jessica Schwarz.

Jessica Schwarz and Luna Wedler in Biohackers (2020)
Biohackers Review: Twisty German Sci-Fi With A Medical Bent
Jessica Schwarz and Luna Wedler in Biohackers (2020)
The characters of Biohackers are faced with such mystery in situations that are larger than anything they could’ve imagined, that they play God in their own journey of synthetic science. Big stuff.

This six-part German Netflix series is everything but what you would expect of a European sci-fi thriller. Created by Christian Ditter, instead of moving from planet to planet in an unbelievable this-will-never-happen flurry, Biohackers is a fast-paced thriller that touches on lust and young relationships, as well as heartbreak and loss, and it’s the better for it.

The show keeps the topic of modern science at its core, in a way attractive enough to keep even those disinterested with topics of biology engaged. By casting talented, young and diverse actors in the lead roles, Ditter creates a symphony of humour, gripping drama and romance.

Scene one of the first episode opens with a young seem-to-be couple on a train.

Series review: Biohackers - Series / Reviews - Germany
Image
Despite a good premise, the series fails to provide a coherent narrative and may leave viewers puzzled. Some might hope that Biohackers, the new TV series released on Netflix on 20 August, could be another unmissable German production building on the success of Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese’s Dark. Unfortunately, the six-part show, co-directed by Christian Ditter and Tim Trachte and written by Ditter himself with Nikolaus Schulz-Dornburg, Tanja Bubbel and Johanna Thalmann, offers an interesting premise but is far from fulfilling expectations. This sci-fi thriller revolves around a girl called Mia Akerlund (Luna Wedler) who enrols in Freiburg University’s prestigious medical school in order to get close to professor and visionary scientist Tanja Lorenz (Jessica Schwarz). Mia suspects that Lorenz was involved in the tragic death of her family years ago, and throws herself into a dangerous world where human...

Watch: Creepy New Trailer For Netflix’s Sci-Fi Show Biohackers
Image
One aspect of Netflix that often goes unsung is the way it brings foreign TV shows to the US. This has resulted in some particularly cool television from Europe jumping the pond, including chillers like Marianne, Curon and Dark. Now, a new show looks set to join their ranks: Biohackers, a German production that explores the murky waters of biohacking, aka genetic experimentation.

Set in Freiberg, Germany, we follow medical student Mia Akerlund (Luna Wedler) as she immerses herself deep into the world of experimental genetic experiments. As she does, she investigates her brother’s mysterious death, which seems to be linked to the work of a top lecturer at the university. What follows looks like a pretty cool thriller, as Akerlund begins with custom-designed glow-in-the-dark mice and ends with hints of much more sinister DNA tinkering in later episodes.

Netflix describes it as so:

“From Thc chips to genetic enhancements,...

Graf Attack!: or The Possibility Space (The Cinema of Dominik Graf)
Rotterdam this year has offered one certifiable giant discovery in international cinema: German filmmaker Dominik Graf, revealed in a simultaneously introductory and interventionist retrospective programmed by Christoph Huber and Olaf Möller. An incredibly prolific filmmaker beginning in the late 1970s, Graf has interwoven his cinema into the fabric of the German television industry, producing a body of work ranging from television episodes, made-for-tv films, essay movies, documentaries, and a handful of films intended for the cinema.

Yet despite Graf's prodigious output of nearly sixty works, its primarily creation for national television has meant that it has been essentially unavailable to English-speaking audiences prior to Rotterdam's 17 film retrospective. The first film of his I saw was Komm mir nicht nach (Don't Follow Me Around) in the middle of the Dreileben trilogy in 2010, notably another for-television project, but one which had festival and theatrical ambitions beyond German living rooms, perhaps due...

New Films Added to Tiff 2011 Line-up Including 'Damsels in Distress,' 'Violet & Daisy,' 'Intruders' and 'Machine Gun Preacher'
Rebecca Hall in The Awakening I may sound like a spoiled brat when I say this, but the fact neither Carnage or Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy were part of this morning's Toronto Film Festival announcement sort of bums me out. However, there are other films that were added that do make my ears perk up, none more so than the addition of Whit Stillman's Damsels in Distress as well as a couple of films I didn't expect and some I had never heard of.

To begin, the closing night film which I guess will serves as something of a Tinker, Tailor replacement, David Hare's (screenwriter of The Hours and The Reader) Page Eight starring Bill Nighy, Rachel Weisz, Michael Gambon, Ralph Fiennes and Judy Davis. The film tells the story of Johnny Worricker (Nighy), an MI5 agent who has learned to keep his observational skills perpetually operational. However,...

The Door DVD Review
Based on the bestselling novel Die Damalstuer by Akif Pirincci (Germany’s equivalent of Stephen King) The Door follows successful artist David Andernach (Mads Mikkelsen) who seemingly has the perfect life; he has a beautiful wife and child and lives in a large home in an affluent suburb. However one day when he’s meant to be looking after his daughter Leonie (Veleria Eisenbart) whilst his wife Maja (Jessica Schwarz) is working; he decides to pay a visit to his neighbour and mistress Gia (Heike Makatsch) instead of taking his daughter out into the forest to catch butterflies. When he returns he finds that Leonie is nowhere to be seen and soon discovers that she has drowned in their pool.

Cut to five years later and we see David as a broken man who’s desperate for forgiveness from Maja, who he is now divorced from, and unable to paint.

‘The Door’ does deliver some genuinely heart-stopping moments.
The Door / Die Tür

Director: Anno Saul

Written by Anno Saul

2009, Germany

Glowering Danish sex god Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royale) comes face to face with himself in director Anno Saul’s German fantasy thriller, The Door. It’s one of many head-scratching moments in a film that flirts with different genres and ideas, from time-travel, horror and homicidal doppelgangers to old-fashioned redemptive drama. Narrative coherence isn’t its strong point, but The Door does deliver some genuinely heart-stopping moments.

Artist David Andernach (Mikkelsen), leaves his young daughter Leonie (Valeria Eisenbart) alone in the garden of their suburban house so he can visit his mistress. His afternoon delight turns into a nightmare, when he returns to find the girl drowned in the swimming pool. Five years pass, and a clumsily scripted scene reveals that David is now divorced from his wife Maja (Jessica Schwarz) and in a suicidal state. Then a...
