Charlize Theron is back in action at Netflix with the long-awaited graphic novel adaptation sequel “The Old Guard 2.” And this time? She’s joined by “Kill Bill” action star alum Uma Thurman.

“The Old Guard 2,” which will be released five years after the first film, has been in the throes of production delays at the streamer. Lead star Theron, who also produces the feature, told Variety in 2024 that it was due to the “changeover” at Netflix that in part led to the film’s post-production being shut down; the feature wrapped filming in 2022.

Now, “The Old Guard” is new again.

Victoria Mahoney directs from a script by Greg Rucka and Sarah L. Walker. The film is based on the 2017 graphic novel from Rucka, which is illustrated by Leandro Fernandez. Gina Prince-Bythewood previously helmed the first installment that became a hit on the platform.

Director Victoria Mahoney’s sequel feature is set to begin streaming July 2. Matthew "Kaz" Firpo and Ryan Firpo's script Ruin was awarded the No. 1 spot on The Black List, which is Hollywood’s annual tribute to the year’s collection of top screenplays which have not yet been produced. At that time, over seven years ago, the Dceu’s Wonder Woman, Gal Gadot, was already in talks to star in the historical drama. Today, it’s been confirmed that Gadot will indeed team up with Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’s Matthias Schoenaerts in the story written by Kaz and Ryan Firpo, both of whom penned the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s lackluster Eternals (2021).

Buzzi was best known for her work on the 1968-73 sketch comedy series Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In, including her signature character Gladys Ormphby. Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot uniting with the director of Disney’s live-action Mulan, working from a script by the writers of Marvel’s Eternals. It might sound as though we’re in for something glossy and multiplex ready, but the forthcoming Ruin will almost certainly be the complete opposite.

Written by Matthew and Ryan Firpo and first appearing on the 2017 Blacklist of unproduced screenplays, Ruin is set in the aftermath of Word War II. Germany, like large sections of Europe, lies in tatters. Against a backdrop of shattered buildings, hunger and unrest, a former Nazi soldier embarks on a mission to wipe out his own SS death squad team. He’s joined by an unlikely ally: a Jewish concentration camp survivor named Elsa.

The 40-year-old actress will star in the upcoming World War II movie Ruin opposite Matthias Schoenaerts.

The Hollywood Reporter notes that the movie “is set in the rubble of Germany following World War II, with a newly released camp prisoner (Gadot) forming an alliance with a German soldier (Schoenaerts) as they both seek revenge on a Nazi Schutzstaffel unit.”

Ruin will be directed by Niki Caro, who most recently directed the Mulan live-action remake and Jennifer Lopez in The Mother.

Filming will begin in early 2026.

It brings Caro back to WWII following her work on The Zookeeper’s Wife, a Holocaust drama for Focus Features, starring Jessica Chastain.

Based on previous photos and videos, this seems to be part of an outer space battle with Supergirl attacking a tank, fighting its inhabitants as it blasts through the cosmos, and then taking flight while tackling one of her foes.

Nearly three years since it commenced shooting and almost five years since the original film first hit Netflix, the streamer’s hit action franchise “The Old Guard” is finally readying to release its sequel. The streamer today announced that “The Old Guard 2,” the second film in the Charlize Theron-starring comic book adaptation series, will start streaming globally on Wednesday, July 2, 2025.

The film, directed by Victoria Mahoney (who takes over from original director Gina Prince-Bythewood) comes with a script by Greg Rucka (who wrote the original comic book miniseries the films are based on) and Sarah L. Walker.
