The Unproduced ‘Far Side’ Movie Sounds Like It Would Have Been a Disaster
Image
Gary Larson’s The Far Side may not seem like the best candidate for a feature film adaptation, considering that it contains no real narrative to speak of. But back in the late ‘80s, the iconic daily single-panel comic very nearly made the jump to the big screen, thanks to Alan Rudolph, the acclaimed director of offbeat films like Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle and Mortal Thoughts.

Not too much is known about the unproduced movie, although we did get a taste of what it might have looked like, thanks to actor Dirk Blocker. In 2021, the Brooklyn Nine-Nine star shared photos from a Far Side screen test he participated in, recalling that, while the project didn’t “go anywhere,” the actors “laughed a lot and got to meet the amazing Gary Larson.”

In addition to these vaguely cursed photos, Rudolph revealed to The A.V. Club that his plan was...

Sharksploitation Review
Image
Who doesn't love a good shark movie? Ever since the release of Steven Spielberg's 1975 classic, Jaws, audiences have been fascinated with shark movies. It's a subgenre that has been around for nearly 100 years (since 1936's White Death), but it was Jaws that allowed the shark movies to really take off and garner fans.

Since then, we have seen a variety of fantastic, compelling, bonkers, fun, and utterly ridiculous shark movies that all gain an incredible amount of success, despite their quality. From Deep Blue Sea and Sharktopus to The Reef and The Shallows, all the way to the Sharknado movies and even Jaws rip-offs like Piranha 3D, there is no denying that shark movies are a ton of fun, and no matter how weird or bonkers the premise, audiences are always drawn back for more.

Shudder's latest original documentary, Sharksploitation explores that very history of shark movies and our fascination with the subgenre,...

Doc ‘Sharksploitation’ Delves into the Sub-Genre Spawned by Steven Spielberg’s ‘Jaws’ (Exclusive)
Image
Ever since Steven Spielberg’s career-launching blockbuster “Jaws” broke out in 1975, the world’s obsession with sharks has not slackened. Evidence of this is the glut of films – and TV series – about the much-maligned and misunderstood predator.

“The movie ‘Jaws’ had a massive impact on me becoming a filmmaker, and it began my lifelong fascination with sharks,” said director-producer Stephen Scarlata whose documentary “Sharksploitation” participates in the Frontières co-production market, organized by the Fantasia International Film Festival in tandem with Cannes’ Marché du Film.

Scarlata (“Jodorowsky’s Dune”) and his team recently secured an all-important interview with marine and environmental conservation advocate Wendy Benchley, who was married to late “Jaws” author Peter Benchley.

Benchley is known to have expressed his deep regret about the characterization of the shark in his bestselling novel that Spielberg adapted. “There is no such thing as a rogue shark which develops a taste for human flesh.

‘Beyond the Gates’ DVD Review
Stars: Graham Skipper, Chase Williamson, Brea Grant, Barbara Crampton, Matt Mercer, Justin Welborn, Jesse Merlin, Henry LeBlanc, Sara Malakul Lane, Caryn Richman | Written by Jackson Stewart, Stephen Scarlata | Directed by Jackson Stewart

Remember Atmosfear? The old Vcr-based board game? Growing up I never had that game, however burgeoning Trekker that I was (BBC 2/Channel 4 at 6pm had a Huge influence on me as a teen), I did have the Star Trek: The Next Generation video board game… Well what if those Vcr games, and games like them, were really gateways to another dimension. That’s the basic premise of Beyond the Gates.

Following the mysterious disappearance of their father, two estranged brothers – Gordon (Skipper) and John (Wiliamson) reunite to liquidate his business, a video store which (besides looking like a film-fans idea of heaven) specializes in horror films. As they dig through the stock, they unearth an old Vcr...

Listen to Daily Dead’s Patrick Bromley Discuss Beyond The Gates on the Splathouse Podcast
Diehard Daily Dead readers know that Patrick Bromley (also the host of the F This Movie! podcast) is a big fan of Jackson Stewart’s Beyond the Gates (for proof, look no further than his love letter to the movie), so it is rather fitting that Patrick was recently a special guest on the Splathouse podcast to discuss the VHS board game horror movie, and you can listen to the new episode right here, right now.

Patrick’s Favorites of 2016
Make no mistake about it: this was a great year for horror fans. It was so good, in fact, that making a list of “favorites” is almost impossible because there’s just too much I want to talk about. The independent horror scene continues to crank out new classics and minor gems, but even studio horror was good this year: The Conjuring 2, Don’t Breathe, Ouija: Origin of Evil, Lights Out (not my bag, but a lot of people really enjoyed it), The Boy (not a lot of people’s bag, but I really enjoyed it), The Purge: Election Year, and so on. Even better? Pretty much every one of them was successful at the box office. As more and more horror moves are released with the limited release / VOD model, it’s nice to know that good movies still play to big audiences at the multiplex.

And what about horror on TV?...

The Healing Power of Beyond The Gates
As years go, 2016 has been a rough one. The movie that’s helping me get through it more than any other right now is Beyond the Gates.

[Warning: This article contains minor spoilers for those who haven’t seen Beyond the Gates.]

This is the year that has claimed a number of brilliant and legendary artists. The year of more devastating terror attacks, of police shootings, and of Brexit. Like it or not, this is also the year that saw the election of a new president who has already been a more polarizing figure than any in recent memory. Reports of hate crimes are on the rise. America is irrevocably divided. This year has sucked, is what I’m saying. But Beyond the Gates gives me hope. Beyond the Gates is the movie the country needs right now.

The debut feature from co-writer/director Jackson Stewart, which hit VOD and limited theatrical release on December 9th, tells the story of two distant brothers (Graham Skipper...

Beyond The Gates Review
Who says you need to adapt? As some filmmakers look towards newfangled technology for 21st century chills (Friend Request/Unfriended/The Den), writer/director Jackson Stewart scares up some vintage nostalgia with his debut feature, Beyond The Gates. Screw Facebook and Skype. Remember the good old days when people sat around in social groups, and spooked themselves silly with products you’d only find in dumpsters nowadays?

For you younger readers, VHS cassettes used to play movies on film before digital radio waves made physical copies obsolete – but Stewart’s concept dates even myself (not in my 30s yet, so I was part of the DVD uprising). Apparently games used to exist in VHS form, and you could play along with the characters on screen (like Final Destination 3 tried to do with their “Select A Fate” DVD). Well, what if those games became reality, and immersion meant realistic consequences?...

Fun Trailer for a Throwback Horror Film About a Creepy VHS Board Game Beyond The Gates
You've got to watch this trailer for a fun looking throwback horror thriller called Beyond the Gates. I wasn't really sure what to make of this film when I first started watching the trailer, and then it got to a point where the main characters start playing a VHS-type board game in which they have to play to save their missing father's soul. That's the concept that grabbed my attention, and I love the whole VHS throwback vibe of it. It looks like it will be an entertaining flick! You can read Ben's review of it here. This is the synopsis:

The movie stars Graham Skipper (Almost Human) and Chase Williamson (John Dies at the End) as "two estranged brothers who reunite to sift through the contents of their missing dad’s VHS rental store. Among the inventory, they discover an interactive Vcr board game, which their father viewed just before he vanished.

Scott’s Los Angeles Film Festival Dispatch, Part One
Independent cinema is the clear focus at La Film Fest. This doesn’t mean they’re completely clear of the sort of pre-packaged, studio-lite fare that tends to climb awards-season ladders into our multiplexes – this year’s festival featured films starring Chris Messina, Idris Elba, Alfred Molina, Gemma Arterton, Gael Garcia Bernal, Gillian Jacobs, and Topher Grace, plus The Conjuring 2, an outright studio film. And even those films without such attachments are not entirely free from the influence, following familiar beats and a sort of glossy presentation in an attempt to “fit in” with the big boys. The extent to which these films could truly be called “independent” is thus debatable, and lends a sort of discomfort to aligning them with truly adventurous voices. That disparity is most evident in four thrillers that played at the festival, which range from practically begging to be let in to actively refusing any sense of acceptance.

Laff 2016 Review: Beyond The Gates is a Horror Adventure with a Lot of Heart
As far as directorial debuts go, Jackson Stewart has a lot to be proud of with his first feature film, Beyond the Gates, which recently premiered at the 2016 Los Angeles Film Festival. Featuring performances from a strongly charismatic cast, a really inventive story concept, fantastic practical effects, and a whole lot of heart that shines through from start to finish, Beyond the Gates feels precisely like a movie I would have rented with friends on a Friday night growing up, and I adored the hell out of it.

Beyond the Gates follows two brothers, Gordon (Graham Skipper) and John (Chase Williamson), who have returned home after their father’s disappearance in order to close up his home video store and deal with the rest of his affairs. While going through their dad’s office, the pair stumbles across an old Vcr horror game called “Beyond the Gates”, which sparks a...

Laff 2016 Interview: Jackson Stewart and Barbara Crampton Take Us Beyond The Gates

Also written by Stephen Scarlata (Jodorowsky’s Dune, Final Girl), Beyond the Gates stars Graham Skipper, Chase Williamson, Brea Grant, Justin Welborn, and Matt Mercer, and follows two estranged brothers (Skipper, Williamson) who return home to deal with their father’s video store business after he’s gone missing, only to uncover a mysterious Vcr game that may be directly linked to his disappearance.

Congrats on the film, guys, I had a lot of fun with it. Jackson, can you talk about where this idea came from and the process of working on the script with Stephen?

Frightfest 2015: ‘Final Girl’ Review
Stars: Abigail Breslin, Wes Bentley, Alexander Ludwig, Logan Huffman, Cameron Bright | Written by Adam Prince, Stephen Scarlata, Alejandro Seri, Johnny Silver | Directed by Tyler Shields

Each and every year a Frightfest there always seems to be an overriding theme that ties a lot of the films screeening there – be they in the main or discovery screens. This year the theme, at least from the films I’ve seen so far, would seem to be strong women. Be it the strong women that take charge of proceedings in films like The Sand, Stung and Night of the Living Deb or the strong “final girls” in films like Last Girl Standing and this, Final Girl.

Directed by professional photographer Tyler Shields, Final Girl tells the story of Veronica who, after her parents are murdered as a young girl, is groomed by a mysterious mentor to become a lethal assassin, her sights...

Abigail Breslin Takes Bloody Revenge in Final Girl [Trailer]
Tyler Shields’ Final Girl is more than a straight forward revenge tale. Star Abigail Breslin plays a girl who has been trained for a very specific purpose. Take revenge on a sadistic group of one-percenters who play a wicked game of kill-the-blond.

With an eerie, evocative feel to it, Shields says, “the idea behind Final Girl was no CGI, no fake effects. I wanted it to be as real as it could be. The fights are real, the cold was real, and therefore, the performances are real.

Final Girl is co-written by Stephen Scarlata, Alejandro Seri, and Johnny Silver with a screenplay from Adam Prince.

Synopsis:

A group of deranged teenage boys dress up in black-tie and ceremoniously lure girls into the woods to hunt and kill them for sport. But their lates [Continued ...]...

Abigail Breslin Turns the Tables in Final Girl
Abigail Breslin is sure turning into a genre actress lately. It seems like after Zombieland, I’ve seen her in more & more genre films like Haunter, The Call and Maggie. She is also going to appear on Fox’s upcoming genre television show, “Scream Queens”.

Final Girl is a film that I believe I saw a promo trailer earlier this year or maybe even last year and thought it looked interesting. The story also comes from Stephen Scarlata, who was one of the producers of the wonderful documentary, Jodorowsky’s Dune. He is also one of the co-writers of the upcoming VHS Horror Board Game film, Beyond the Gates.

Jodorowsky’S Dune (2012): Alejandro Jodorowsky Movie Clip
Jodorowsky’s Dune Clip. Frank Pavich‘s Jodorowsky’s Dune (2012) movie clip stars Alejandro Jodorowsky. Jodorowsky’s Dune‘s plot synopsis: “The documentary covers cult film director Alejandro Jodorowsky and his 1974 attempt to create a big-screen adaptation of Frank Herbert’s seminal science fiction novel, Dune. While the ambitious production collapsed after two years, Jodorowsky’s team of then relatively unknown concept artists continued exploring the themes and styles started on the project and ended up changing modern science fiction forever: H.R. Giger went on to Ridley Scott’s masterpiece Alien, Dan O’Bannon wrote Alien and Total Recall, Jean “Moebius” Giraud created artwork and futuristic worlds for The Empire Strikes Back, Tron, and The Fifth Element and Chris Foss would go on to work on Alien and Superman.”

This is pretty intriguing. I had no idea another Dune film had come so far along into production and was then canned.
