Galeca: The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics unveiled nominations for their 2nd annual Dorian Theater Awards on Monday, March 13. Galeca’s 39-member theater wing decided this season’s crop of nominees, which honor the best of Broadway and Off-Broadway.
The nominations list is dominated by the current revival of “Merrily We Roll Along” and new play “Stereophonic.” Both productions netted six nominations a piece. In the case of “Merrily,” that tally includes bids for its Tony-nominated trio of stars: Jonathan Groff, Lindsay Mendez, and Daniel Radcliffe. “Stereophonic” managed one better with four members of its cast nominated in the same featured performance category: Will Brill, Eli Gelb, Tom Pecinka, and Sarah Pidgeon. The individual acting races at the Dorian Awards are gender neutral.
The Best Broadway Musical category features Tony Award nominees “Hell’s Kitchen,” “Illinoise,” “The Outsiders,” and “Suffs,” along with the closed David Byrne tuner “Here Lies Love” and soon-to-be closing “Lempicka.

David Adjmi’s Stereophonic was named Best Play of the year by the New York Drama Critics’ Circle today, with the Best Musical Award going to the Off Broadway production of Dead Outlaw from the team behind The Band’s Visit.
Stereophonic, currently on Broadway, has received 13 Tony Award nominations, and includes songs written by Will Butler from the indie rock band Arcade Fire. The play tells the story of a fractious 1970s Fleetwood Mac-like rock band recording what will be a massive Rumours-like hit record.
Dead Outlaw, with music and lyrics by David Yazbek and Erik Della Penna and a book by Itamar Moses, is inspired by the life of Elmer McCurdy. The musical, which premiered this year at the Minetta Lane Theatre, was originally conceived by Yazbek and tells the story of an outlaw from the early 20th Century whose corpse became a traveling sideshow exhibit for decades.

With 36 productions eligible for this year’s Tony Awards, there were plenty of names missing when nominations were announced by Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Renée Elise Goldsberry on Tuesday morning. Among the most surprising 2024 Tony nominations snubs was “Patriots.” Peter Morgan‘s history play about Russia earned three Olivier Award nominations last year, including Best New Play, Actor (Tom Hollander) and Featured Actor (Will Keen). In New York, it only scored one for Michael Stuhlbarg, who took over the role played by Hollander in the UK; Keen, who reprises his role as Vladimir Putin, did not score a nomination in a category stuffed with “Stereophonic” performers.
The revival of “The Who’s Tommy” also significantly underperformed. Gold Derby users predicted it would land three nominations for Best Musical Revival, Best Actor for Ali Louis Bourzgui and Best Choreographer for Lorin Latarro, but it only earned one bid in the top revival category.

Ossie Davis’ play Purlie Victorious premiered on Broadway as a drama in 1961 when the vestiges of America’s Jim Crow caste system were still alive and well in the South. Even with 60-plus years of distance, it’s hard to believe how resonant the play is today with the hilarious Broadway revival that premiered last week at the Music Box Theatre.
Leslie Odom Jr. stars in the title role as a smooth-talking Georgia preacher trying to get a $500 inheritance left by his Aunt Henrietta from Ol’ Cap’n (Jay O. Sanders). Purlie comes up with a crackpot scheme to hire Lutiebelle Gussie Mae Jenkins (Kara Young) to pose as Henrietta’s daughter, Cousin Bee, to get the money from Ol’ Cap’n. Purlie wants the funds to buy Big Bethel church, where his dad once preached. High jinx ensue – but amid all the slapstick comedy, a much more profound story...

“Segregation is a ridiculous institution and it makes decent people do ridiculous things,” playwright, actor-director, and activist Ossie Davis told the New York Times on September 24, 1961, four days before his play Purlie Victorious: A Non-Confederate Romp Through the Cotton Patch opened on Broadway, co-starring himself and his wife, Ruby Dee. “Maybe if they can be made to laugh at it they can see how absurd it is.”
Especially on a Great White Way where actors played predominantly to white audiences that had seen few comedies by Black playwrights, let alone satires on segregation, Purlie Victorious must have been a jolting event. Though the play, which ran for nearly eight months on Broadway, begat a film adaptation in 1963 (Gone Are the Days!) and the successful musical Purlie in 1970, Davis’s comedy about an aggrieved “self-made minister” righteously “disembezzling” a racist plantation owner has largely faded from popular memory.

Writer-director Azazel Jacobs has made a couple of indie pictures I really loved. French Exit gave Michelle Pfeiffer one of her meatiest roles in years and she ran with it in a delicious Paris-set tale. He also provided Debra Winger and Tracy Letts with terrific roles in the sophisticated The Lovers. And now Jacobs shows once again he knows how to attract top actors with well-written characters in the intimate drama His Three Daughters, which stars Carrie Coon, Elizabeth Olsen and Natasha Lyonne.
The trio play sisters gathering in the New York City apartment where their father (Jay O. Sanders) is down the hall (unseen for most of the film) and near death. Jacobs purposely wants the confined atmosphere to let the dialogue rise to the top. They have arrived to spend his final days with him, but also to renew their own dysfunctional dynamic. Three sisters convene to say goodbye to their dying father in a detailed and intimate yet uneven drama
For better and for worse, the pandemic begat a certain micro-genre of intimate drama, one defined by its smallness – tight cast, single location, no extras, minimal costumes. His Three Daughters, the latest from the film-maker Azazel Jacobs, feels like a Covid movie. The action is confined to one Manhattan apartment, to which three sisters, played by Carrie Coon, Natasha Lyonne and Elizabeth Olsen, return to settle the affairs of their dying father (Jay O Sanders) and say goodbye. The sisters almost entirely pick at the film’s knot of grief, resentment, relief and tricky love; their relationships are, for reasons that trickle out over several days, fraught and frosty. The ensemble players include two hospice nurses, one sister’s hookup and a neighbor.
Not that this is a bad thing; death, especially...

This is a relationship film of mother to son/social worker to surrogate son, all through Evelyn, in another stellar performance by Julianne Moore. Her actual son is Ziggy (Finn Wolfhard) a somewhat lost soul who spends his hours live streaming his original music to a growing international fan base. Her surrogate son is Kyle (Billy Brick), a 17-year-old who has checked into the domestic abuse halfway house with his mother, where Evelyn is director. As Evelyn drifts from Ziggy, she latches too close onto Kyle, and the result becomes a messy relationship for each boy. Meanwhile, of course, all the other relationships in their lives swirl around them.

So, I’m thinking that there may be a bit of a hidden strategy concerning a couple of this week’s big movie releases. Nothing nefarious mind you, perhaps more of a coincidence. Basically, we’ve got two tales of conflict between a parent and a son. Yes, the other film is the somber, emotional drama The Son. This other work, on the “flip side” also has lots of verbal clashes, but it’s peppered with lots of humor, often at the expense of the divisive duo. Plus it takes a few well-deserved shots, more like “burns’ at our social media-obsessed society. This is a touch ironic since it’s written and directed by the actor who was Oscar-nominated for his performance in an epic docudrama set on the fringes of the worldwide web. Now we’ve given a heads-up to the script’s snarky tone by the title. Can...

This review originally January 20, 2022, in conjunction with the film’s world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival.
Jesse Eisenberg is no stranger to embodying a certain kind of awkwardness and unsociability in front of a camera, and he sticks to what he knows with his feature directorial debut, “When You Finish Saving the World.” The indie drama from A24, which premiered on the opening night of the virtual 2022 Sundance Film Festival on Thursday, is a veritable symphony in awkward conversations; if you’re not cringing half the time, you’re not paying attention.
And like several of the other actors who’ve used Sundance in recent years as a launching pad for their first features as directors — among them Paul Dano (“Wildlife”), Viggo Mortensen (“Falling”), Robin Wright (“Land”), Rebecca Hall (“Passing”), Emerald Fennell (“Promising Young Woman”) and Bo Burnham (“Eighth Grade”) — Eisenberg emerges as a restrained filmmaker who has a...

Jesse Eisenberg is exactly how you might expect. He’s anxious, speaking quickly with his hands, a slight tremble in his voice from a clear nervousness. In fact, he’s similar to many of the characters he has played over the last 15 years. Eisenberg has repeatedly stated his difficulty in the public eye, his aversion to being famous, which becomes more obvious within minutes of sitting across from him.
His directorial debut, When You Finish Saving the World, portrays an isolated family, a theme he continues writing about through short stories, New Yorker articles, and screenplays. The trailer for “When You Finish Saving the World,” the new A24 film written and directed by Jesse Eisenberg, has arrived.
“The Social Network” star’s directorial debut revolves around the rocky relationship between Ziggy (Finn Wolfhard of “Stranger Things” fame), a teenager looking to launch his music career on the internet, and his mother Evelyn (Julianne Moore). The film premiered at Sundance earlier this year and is due to hit theaters on Jan. 20, 2023.
At the top of the video, Ziggy asks for a ride to school, saying he’ll be ready in five seconds. An impatient Evelyn counts to five before walking out the door. Beyond the typical trials and tribulations of parenting, Evelyn fails to understand her son’s budding music career online, where he has a decent-sized following.

Though he's perhaps best known for his turn as Mark Zuckerberg in the 2010 drama "The Social Network," Jesse Eisenberg is an even more astute writer than he is an actor. His debut feature film, "When You Finish Saving The World," is forthcoming from everyone's favorite studio and we finally have the very first trailer for the project.
In the footage for the comedy, we meet Evelyn (played by Julianne Moore) and her eccentric son, Ziggy (Finn Wolfhard), who couldn't be more at odds in their day-to-day lives. "Ziggy, are you happy?" A24 has revealed an official trailer for Jesse Eisenberg's feature directorial debut called When You Finish Saving The World, which first premiered 2022 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. It is being released by A24 in theaters in exactly a year from its initial premiere, in January 2023 starting out in art house cinemas. Evelyn and her oblivious son Ziggy seek out replacements for each other as Evelyn desperately tries to parent an unassuming teenager at her shelter, while Ziggy fumbles through his pursuit of a brilliant young woman at school. Starring Academy-Award winner Julianne Moore and Finn Wolfhard, with Billy Bryk, Alisha Boe, Jack Justice, Jay O. Sanders, Eleonore Hendricks, and Catherine Haun. Featuring original music by Emile Mosseri, Finn Wolfhard, and Jesse Eisenberg. I first saw this at Sundance (read our review) and it's good, but not a knock out. There is some smart commentary...

Alejandro González Iñárritu’s first film set and shot in his native Mexico since he turned heads more than two decades ago with Amores Perros is as long and windy as its title. “It’s pretentious and pointlessly oneiric,” scoffs a fellow Mexican who has found success in crass commercialism rather than art and truth, dismissing the semi-autobiographical protagonist’s work. Iñárritu seems to be cheekily preempting his critics. However accurate you find that assessment, the epic existential comedy, Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths, is also a work of exacting craftsmanship, shifting with beguiling fluidity between dream and reality with ravishing visuals, shot on 65mm by the great cinematographer Darius Khondji.

"Time passes and suddenly you realize, 'this is it.'" Vertical Entertainment has revealed an official trailer for an indie film titled The Road to Galena, which will be out to watch starting this July. The film is another of these "what if you had everything, but you still felt something was missing?" kind of existential dramas. Power lawyer Cole Baird has all the trappings of success, but behind the façade, he’s crippled by a career he never wanted and a dream left behind. He now has a choice to make: continue a life of emptiness or follow the path to happiness back to his small, rural hometown. "A touching story of one man's quiet desperation giving way to fulfillment; a story that motivates us to travel our own roads toward a more meaningful life." The film stars Ben Winchell as Cole, Will Brittain, Jay O. Sanders, Jill Hennessy,...

Calling Dr. Mark Greene. Please report to the Broadway stage.
ER star Anthony Edwards made his Broadway musical debut Friday night as “Dr. Walker” in the Tony-nominated Girl From The North Country. With several members of the company out of the show because of Covid-19 infections, Edwards stepped in at the last moment (and after only an hour of rehearsal time) to ensure that the show would go on.
He starred opposite his wife, Mare Winningham, who was recently nominated for a Tony Award for her role.
Lead producer of Girl From The North Country Tristan Baker made a pre-show announcement to express his gratitude to the production’s swings and understudies, and let the house know they were in for an extra special show. Two weeks after the closing of her play “Clyde’s,” Lynn Nottage has opened a new jukebox musical about a star who needs no introduction. Penned by the two-time Pulitzer Prize-winner, “Mj The Musical” features three dozen of Michael Jackson’s songs in a dramatization of the rehearsals for his blockbuster “Dangerous” world tour in 1992. The show also features flashbacks to Jackson’s beginnings in The Jackson 5 and his formative years.
“Mj” stars Broadway newcomer Myles Frost as the late sensation, while Walter Russell III and Christian Wilson alternate the role of Little Michael and Tavon Olds-Sample tackles the years in between. Christopher Wheeldon directs and choreographs the production, which also credits Rich + Tone Talauega with those singular Michael Jackson moves.

A refigured and condensed version of his own audio drama of the same name, When You Finish Saving the World is a slight directorial debut from Jesse Eisenberg featuring sturdy performances working a script that gets a bit lost. Examining a family whose dysfunction can be best described as a detached aloofness when finding common ground for their individual interests and desires, this drama mostly unfolds by contrasting the isolated lives of mother Evelyn (Julianne Moore) and son Ziggy (Finn Wolfhard). Despite perceptive passages and formal confidence telling the small-scale nature of this story, Eisenberg can’t stick the landing, boxing his characters into a cloying, frustrating, and unconvincing conclusion.
With verbose energy and a confident passion for his DIY music ambitions, Ziggy spends his time crafting “classic folk rock with alternative influences” from his bedroom studio, live-streaming to some 20,000 followers. While it’s the only barometer for his self-worth,...

To see 17-year-old Ziggy Katz (Finn Wolfhard) on the street, you’d think he was a decent kid. He says no to drugs, he livestreams milquetoast folk songs that rhyme “foggy” and “doggy,” and he’s even comfortable sporting a pink knitted hat because gender stereotypes are so last generation. Alas, Ziggy has the rotten luck to be trapped in Jesse Eisenberg’s bleak debut “When You Finish Saving the World” where he’s surrounded by sin-counting idealists in a liberal midwestern bubble who consider the fame-seeking teen to be as unenlightened as the hairspray heads who once swaggered down the Sunset Strip — a claustrophobic mockery of do-gooderism that expands upon and simplifies Eisenberg’s 2020 time-bending audio drama of the same name.
In this unnamed Indiana town, Ziggy’s crush Lila (Alisha Boe), a poet who writes ballads against the colonialist occupation of the Marshall Islands, dismisses him as a moron.

Although Jesse Eisenberg is well known to movie audiences due to starring in films like Zombieland and his Oscar-nominated role in The Social Network, he is becoming a force elsewhere in the arts with a series of plays, short stories, and New Yorker pieces all now leading to a smart, funny, knowing and entirely accomplished first feature as writer and director. When You Finish Saving the World, making its world premiere tonight at the (virtual) Sundance Film Festival, puts a different spin on familial relationships as it travels on two tracks centering on an activist-workaholic-socially concerned mother whose disappointment with her teenage son’s more frivolous pursuits leads her in surprising directions, just as that boy tries against all odds to pursue a bright and desirable girl at school who is deeply involved in political causes. It is a very funny conundrum for both mother and son as they venture...

The sextet of queens of Six and each of the three Lehman Brothers – or rather the performers in the Broadway roles – may compete in the Tony Awards’ lead acting categories this year, Tony administrators announced today.
The decision to consider the individual members of those ensemble casts was among the first set of eligibility rulings made for the 2021-2022 season. The Tony Awards Administration Committee met yesterday in the first of the several eligibility meetings the group will have before the end of the season next spring.
This round of decisions mostly addresses acting category decisions, determining whether various cast members of often large ensembles fall into the lead slots.
A decision was also made on Trouble in Mind, the Alice Childress play originally staged Off Broadway in 1955 that had never been produced on Broadway until this season. As it did several seasons ago with Mart Crowley’s 1968 play The Boys in the Band,...

Back in March 2020, the Bob Dylan songbook musical “Girl From the North Country” opened on Broadway on March 5, just one week before theaters shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic. Now more than 19 months later, the show returned to the Belasco Theatre and reopened on Oct. 13.
Even though the musical officially opened last year, it did not run long enough for many of the approximately 800 Tony Awards voters to attend and was therefore deemed ineligible for consideration at this past ceremony. Since it has returned to Broadway, though, “North Country” will compete at the 2022 ceremony, over two years after its original opening date.
Three-time Tony nominee Conor McPherson wrote the libretto and directed this original musical, which uses more than 20 songs from Nobel-laureate Dylan’s catalogue to tell a Depression-era story of a family-run boarding house on the brink of foreclosure, which is set in Duluth, Minnesota, the city of Dylan’s birth.

Hadestown and Girl From The North Country announced their Broadway returns today, with the Tony Award-winning musical Hadestown set to become the first production to resume performances on Broadway when its curtain rises on Thursday, Sept. 2.
Girl From The North Country, the musical that features songs from Bob Dylan’s catalogue, will resume performances on Wednesday, Oct. 13.
The Hadestown re-launch will mark the first Broadway production to begin performances since the March 12, 2020, pandemic shutdown. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo had previously said that Broadway would be permitted to open at full capacity on Sept. 14, but Hadestown producers said today that the early opening was worked out in coordination with the Jujamcyn Theaters, owner of the Hadestown’s Walter Kerr Theatre, the Governor’s office and in cooperation with The Broadway League.
A spokesperson for Hadestown said the early relaunch is due to the timing of the Hadestown touring production schedule:...

When Conor McPherson was writing his Bob Dylan jukebox musical, Girl From the North Country, he didn’t want to include your usual Dylan fare — he wanted to plumb the deep cuts.
The Irish playwright owned about five Dylan albums when he was approached with the idea of writing a musical featuring the legend’s music. As he told Rolling Stone in 2017, he was sent Dylan’s complete catalog so he could upload it on his iPod, shuffle the tracks, and hear all the classics and the lesser-known treasures.

The jukebox musical — or “catalog musical,” as some on Broadway prefer to call it — has been running rampant for more than a decade now, leaving both triumphs and travesties in its wake. But even after we’ve seen the lives of Cher, the Temptations, Carole King, and the Four Seasons transformed into musicals — or the songs of Johnny Cash, the Go-Go’s, and Alanis Morissette used as scores for fictional stories — nothing quite prepares you for Girl From the North Country. Not the first, but certainly the best, musical featuring...

In case you hadn’t noticed over the last five or six decades, Bob Dylan can’t be contained, not by any particular genre, persona, creed or even voice, and the same can mostly be said for Girl From The North Country, the musical, written and directed by Conor McPherson, that transports the hits and deep-cuts of a peerless songbook to a Depression-era, crossroads-of-humanity boarding house. Opening tonight in a Broadway production that both focuses and somewhat constricts the musical that seemed more physically expansive, more tonally dreamlike, in its 2018 Off Broadway incarnation, Girl From The North Country nonetheless remains a revelation in its uncanny interpretations of even the most familiar Dylan songs.
When Girl was staged at the Public Theater downtown, the production – same director, same creative team, mostly the same cast – was both mournful and celebratory at once, a downbeat tale of folks at their wits’ end but...
