Photo: ‘Samurai Rabbit: The Usagi Chronicles’ Background Before I tackle this show itself, I feel it necessary to give some background on it: The show is based on the comic book series ‘Usagi Yojimbo’ written and illustrated by American-Japanese artist Stan Sakai. Set in a world of anthropomorphic animals in Japan’s Edo period, the comic stars a rabbit samurai named Miyamoto Usagi. The comic’s gone on to receive quite a lot of acclaim over the years since its inception, and curiously enough, the character of Miyamoto Usagi has appeared numerous times in the ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ franchise. Considering the comic’s great success, it was only natural that it would eventually receive a television adaptation. Following an announcement that Gaumont Animation optioned ‘Usagi Yojimbo’ as a TV series, it was revealed that Netflix would release the show onto their platform as an original series, under the title...

Netflix has ordered “Samurai Rabbit: The Usagi Chronicles,” a new CGI animated kids’ series based on the award-winning “Usagi Yojimbo” comic books by Stan Sakai.
Produced by Gaumont, “Samurai Rabbit” marks the first animated TV adaptation inspired by Sakai’s comics. The show will follow a brand new character, teenage Rabbit Samurai Yuichi, a descendent of Miyamoto Usagi, the protagonist of the “Usagi Yojimbo” comic books.
Per Netflix, “The series takes place in the far future, set in a world that mixes modern high-tech images with classic Japanese references. It follows the teenage Rabbit Samurai Yuichi, descendent of the great warrior Miyamoto Usagi, on his epic quest to become a true samurai. But he isn’t alone! Netflix is teaming with Gaumont on a CGI animated series titled “Samurai Rabbit: The Usagi Chronicles,” which is based on the 35-year-old comic book series by Stan Sakai.

For long-time comic readers, Summer also means Annuals. Clearly, they are no longer confined to only summer. The Star Wars Adventures Annual is full of all-ages adventures and is published by Idw. I love this idea and as a mature reader (i.e. older) I can both appreciate them… and then enjoy passing them along to younger readers. (I should use the hashtag #LetTheBrainwashingBegin).
Stan Sakai provides such a delightful cover that you might want to keep it in your collection. Oh, and look out for that other Star Wars character everyone loves to hate (I think he’s number 2 after Jar-Jar), Jaxxon the big green bunny.
It seems like yesterday to me when Marvel’s original Star Wars wrapped up, and the next story arc featured Han and Chewie on a Magnificent Seven-esque quest with various characters, including Jaxxon. He didn’t seem so bad back then,...

Welcome to another installment of Weekly Picks where I take a look at the comics I am most excited about for this upcoming New Comic Book Day. Keep in mind I have yet to read these books so this is based solely on expectations. Sometimes expectations can get the best of us so I try to even it out by also pointing out what could also go wrong.
American Carnage #8 Writer: Bryan Edward Hill | Artist: Leandro Fernandez | Publisher: Vertigo Comics
Solicitation: Bullets fly and blood flows when Richard’s plan to exfiltrate one of Jennifer’s childhood friends from the white nationalist narcotics business goes awry. Meanwhile, Sheila’s new FBI overlord makes his move as DC Vertigo’s acclaimed Los Angeles crime saga continues in this stunning issue.
Why I am Excited: If I was to pick the best comic of 2019 so far American Carnage would probably be the book I would choose.

As Corpse Club listeners know, we're big fans of all things Alien here on Daily Dead, and like a lot of fans, we're fascinated by the production behind one of the more divisive entries in the franchise, Alien 3. Titan Comics and Statix Press are excited to announce that creator Pau’s Prix Du Fibd Angoulême award-nominated comic – Atlas & Axis - is being translated for a whole new Us audience, next January.
In the fantastical world of Pangea, all the animals talk and walk on two paws. Warriors Atlas and Axis are mutts of very different pedigrees: Atlas is intelligent and rational, a calculating hero, while Axis is more likely to take a wild swing when his blood runs hot. When our roaming adventurers return home to find Viking raiders – brutes from the North who pillage and kill all who fall under their claws – have destroyed their village, they set off on a perilous quest across land and sea to save what remains of their friends and family!
Says Usagi Yojimbo creator, Stan Sakai:
I have been a fan of Pau’s Atlas & Axis for years, collecting the French editions.

Recently I had the opportunity to visit the Nickelodeon Animation Studio and their new Entertainment Lab in Burbank, CA. I chatted with Chris Young, Senior Vice President for the Entertainment Lab; Chris Savino, creator of The Loud House; and Farnaz Esnaashari-Charmatz, creator of Shimmer and Shine. I played around in their newly developed immersive and interactive Vr experience; sat in on a recording session for Shimmer and Shine; stopped in to say hi to Ciro Nieli, executive producer for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and see his cool office; and viewed all kinds of creativity in progress during the studio tour.
And let me tell you: the experience was awesome.
As in, so awesome, I’m wondering how Alternate Me could get a job there. Because let’s be honest – there are office jobs that look like The Office, and then there are workplaces like Nickelodeon, which has slime stairs, a SpongeBob wall,...

Top 10 Christmas List
As we begin the holiday season, my good friend Michael Connally asked me to put together a top 10-wish list for Christmas.
Cook’s “Top 10 for the Holiday’s” List:
10. Ronin Warriors – DVD Price - $20
I have never followed anime much, but at one point I thoroughly enjoyed Ronin Warriors. It was first introduced in 1988. Its plot centers around the demon lord of the Netherworld who is bent on conquering the mortal world. Standing against him and his four Dark Warlords are the five Ronin Warriors, each in possession of mystical armor and weapons. They are assisted by a young student-teacher, and a mysterious warrior-monk known only as The Ancient (Wikipedia). I found the storyline to be quite entertaining with each warrior’s powers balancing one another, as do their individual personalities. The tale also provides interesting inspiration from Japanese folklore / culture.
