12 Actors Who Reprised Their Roles In Different Projects
Image
Check out the box office results from 2024, and you'll have to scroll down a while to find a film that isn't part of the barrage of Hollywood sequels, remakes, adaptations, and spinoffs. In fact, you have to go all the way down to the 21st-most-successful film of 2024 to find a wholly-original property. That movie was John Krasinski's "If," and chances are that one'll probably get a sequel too.

It's no surprise that people like things they're already familiar with. As University of Surrey lecturer Erica Hepper, Ph.D., told The Huffington Post, "Nostalgia is the warm, fuzzy emotion that we feel when we think about fond memories from our past." People want to watch characters they already know because it feels good to see someone you're familiar with, and the industry seems to be leaning into this more than ever.

As a result, many actors have been tapped to...

The Beauty is based on a comic book series and FX has ordered an 11-episode first season.

Image
Spy Kids star Carla Gugino looks back on one major problem she had with her role in the film franchise. She played the kids' mother, Ingrid Cortez, alongside Antonio Banderas as their father.

Gugino told People that she felt too young to be the mother of two preteen children when filming Robert Rodriguez's Spy Kids movie, which was released back in 2001. "I was 27 when I did that role, so I was way too young to play the part, because I was supposed to have been a spy for 10 years, and then I had two kids, who were like 9 and 11," she said.

She was given some wise advice by Antonio Banderas, with the seasoned action star telling her not to worry about her concerns too much. "Robert looked at me and was like, 'You do your job and no one will notice.'" Banderas' words of wisdom worked, and the...

Tom Hanks’ Divisive Christmas Adventure Finds Renewed Streaming Success In Time For 20th Anniversary
Image
Tom Hanks' divisive Christmas adventure film finds renewed streaming success just in time for its 20th anniversary. Though his most frequent collaborator is Steven Spielberg, Hanks is also well known for his various collaborations with director Robert Zemeckis, starting with 1994's Forrest Gump, for which he won his second Academy Award for Best Actor. In 2000, Hanks reunited with Zemeckis for Cast Away and earned another Oscar nomination for Best Actor.

Some of Hanks' latest movies have also been directed by Zemeckis, including 2022's live-action Pinnochio, in which he played Geppetto, and 2024's Here, in which the actor was digitally de-aged. In addition to his onscreen roles that have made him one of the most recognizable movie stars, Hanks has also lent his voice to a few animated characters throughout his career, most famously Woody in the Toy Story movies. 15 Iconic Elves in Christmas Movies, Ranked
Image
Santa's elves have become as integral to Christmas as the big man is. Much like St. Nick, the elves seem to have entered into the Yuletide mythos from a variety of places, including Norse Mythology, the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm, and mid-19th century literature. It was the introduction of electronic media, however, that further popularized elves, indelibly linking them to Santa Claus and Christmastime.

Over the decades, there have been dozens of movies and TV specials starring or featuring Santa Claus. Nearly all of them have included Santa's helpers, magical beings with a knack for toy making and abundant Christmas spirit. Typically, elves are little more than supporting characters. Yet sometimes, some of these enchanted helpers step into the spotlight. Over the years, some elves in popular movies have become about as iconic as Santa himself.

10 Most Hardcore Quotes From Kid's Movies (That Feel Really Out Of Place)
Image
Movies aimed at children are typically more lighthearted affairs, but that doesn't stop the occasional screenwriter from injecting some surprisingly chilling dialogue into an otherwise family-friendly story. Even the best movies made for kids are less intense by their very nature, with rating guidelines and cultural sensibilities usually demanding a more relaxed tone. While children's films can delve into more serious topics like heartbreak and death, it's certainly rare for their dialogue to be exactly hardcore.

It's a rare few kid's movies that break this trend, doling out some hard-hitting quotes that stand with the best movie lines in history. Sometimes, these witticisms make sense in an overall more mature family picture skating by on a PG or PG-13 rating, but in other instances, they feel jarringly out-of-place in an otherwise fun or downright vapid piece of children's entertainment. Sounding even more hardcore when taken out of context, it's hard...

Robin Williams was one of the greatest comedic actors of all time, with a hilarious filmography to match. Jumanji, Mrs. Doubtfire, Patch Adams, and Good Morning, Vietnam are just a few of this legend's iconic projects. 2009's World's Greatest Dad followed Williams as single father and high school teacher Lance Clayton. When his son tragically passes away, Clayton invents a story and embellishes the circumstances around the death, creating a web of lies that soon spins out of control. The twisted tale of familial love was uncharted territory for the typically wholesome Williams, but it paid off with critics and audiences.

In an interview with IndieWire, the director recalled his casting of Powell saying, "I remember distinctly how surprised I was [by Powell] because wed cast a bunch of people from L.A. And then to fill out the other roles [on Spy Kids 3-D], we cast local actors who dont get as much experience as the ones who are working in L.A. So youre just trying to find someone locally that wont get nervous, thatll give a performance that kind of measures up to the other actors. Polar Express 2 Can Already Be Much Better Than The 2004 Christmas Film In 1 Big Way
Image
The Polar Express 2 can be better than the first movie in terms of animation, as technology has evolved since 2004. The motion-capture animation in the first movie was groundbreaking at the time but has since aged quickly and drawn criticism. The sequel has the advantage of improved animation technology, which can make for a more visually appealing and immersive experience.

Robert Zemeckis’ Christmas movie The Polar Express is now getting a sequel, and there’s one big way in which The Polar Express 2 can be a lot better than the first movie. Throughout his career as a filmmaker, Robert Zemeckis has explored a variety of genres, and in 2004, he brought a family-friendly Christmas movie with The Polar Express. Based on the 1985 children’s book of the same name by Chris Van Allsburg, The Polar Express is an animated fantasy movie starring Tom Hanks, Daryl Sabara, and Nona Gaye.

The Polar Express follows a young boy who,...

How Carla Gugino Landed Her 'Spy Kids' Role
Image
Since the early 2000s, Spy Kids and its subsequent sequels have been a memorable part for many people's childhoods, bringing us an action-packed and exciting story about two kids in a spy family. The first movie debuted in 2001, with Alexa PenaVega, Daryl Sabara, Carla Gugino, and Antonio Banderas leading the charge as the Cortez family. While the quad still makes an impact today, Gugino didn't think she would get the role of Ingrid, primarily because she thought she was too young to play the mother. That all changed after an unexpected message and a meeting with writer/director Robert Rodriguez. But there's a little more to her story.

All 7 Characters Tom Hanks Plays In The Polar Express
Image
Tom Hanks plays seven roles in The Polar Express, including the main character Hero Boy and the punctual Conductor. Hanks provided motion capture and facial expressions for Hero Boy, while the voice was provided by Spy Kid's Daryl Sabara. The movie reveals that Hanks' Hobo is actually a ghost and only Hero Boy can see him. The Hobo helps Chris at various points in the story.

Tom Hanks played seven roles in Christmas favorite The Polar Express, some of which are easier to spot than others. Based on the children's picture book by Chris Van Allsburg (Jumanji), The Polar Express became famous/infamous for its extensive use of motion capture. Director Robert Zemeckis was a proponent of this technique, as it freed him to place the camera wherever he wished. Despite this, the film was heavily criticized for its uncanny valley visuals, with many critics being particularly unnerved by the...

Josh Hutcherson Secretly Starred In $314 Million Hit Christmas Movie From 19 Years Ago (& Shared The Role With Tom Hanks)
Image
Josh Hutcherson acted alongside Tom Hanks in The Polar Express, providing motion capture for the character of Hero Boy. The Polar Express is recognized as the first all-digital capture film. Hutcherson was not the voice of Hero Boy, as Tom Hanks and Daryl Sabara provided the voices for the adult and young versions of the character, respectively.

One of Josh Hutcherson's first jobs in Hollywood was in a $314 million Christmas movie 19 years ago that also starred Tom Hanks. Before he became a huge movie star, Hutcherson was a young actor in the early 2000s looking for his break, and it happened to come alongside one of the most famous actors in the world. Since that time, Josh Hutcherson has done plenty besides starring in the Hunger Games franchise. He starred in Journey to the Center of the Earth and, most recently, starred in the popular Five Nights at Freddy's movie adaptation.

Spy Kids' Cortez Family Tree Explained
Image
The Spy Kids franchise is centered on the Cortez family, with multiple generations of spies taking on the family legacy of espionage. Juni Cortez, the youngest member of the family, goes from a weak kid to a world-saving protector throughout the Spy Kids movies. Carmen Cortez, the responsible sibling, starts off watching over by her brother, Juni, but ends up being rescued by him in later films.

The Spy Kids franchise follows several generations of one family, and the movies may raise questions about how the characters are connected to one another. Set in a world full of espionage, Spy Kids sees siblings Juni and Carmen taking on their family legacy of being spies. Despite their destiny being hidden from them for most of their childhood, Juni and Carmen eventually take on the career path that their entire extended family — parents, aunts and uncles, and grandparents — has taken part in throughout their lives.

Spy Kids Cast: Where They Are Today
Image
Before The Avengers assembled, before the Justice League entered the silver screen, and before superheroes took over the media today, there was a team that fought evil. Born to be heroes, the brother and sister duo fought multiple attacks on Earth and defended the world against unknown villains. That team was the Spy Kids. Every Millennial and cusp Gen Z-er either loved them or would have loved to be them. Most of the time, it was both. With the franchise consisting of a trilogy, sequels in 2011 and 2023, and an animated show titled Spy Kids: Mission Critical, the world that filmmaker Robert Rodriguez created is big.

With the original trilogy, Rodriguez gathered a star-studded cast that had a lot of experience under their belts to create the fun staple of the early 2000s. So, what has the cast been up to since their days of spying? From kid stars to seasoned pros,...

Robert Rodriguez Would Make Another ‘Desperado’ Sequel, but He’s Worried About Glorifying Gun Violence
Antonio Banderas, Alan Cumming, Carla Gugino, Daryl Sabara, and Alexa PenaVega in Spy Kids (2001)
The “Spy Kids” are back, and director Robert Rodriguez is once again spearheading the franchise through a soft reboot — this time for Netflix.

The clever, kids-have-to-be-spys-after-their-spy-parents-are-captured conceit returns in “Spy Kids: Armageddon” (now streaming), the fifth film in the franchise and one yet again written and directed by series creator Rodriguez. This time it’s a new family, led by Gina Rodriguez and Zachary Levi, who are battling an evil game designer (Billy Magnussen). Thankfully, their kids (Connor Esterson and Everly Carganilla) spring into action. It’s got a ton of humor, a ton of heart, some classically “Spy Kids”-y action and some brand-new gadgets. What more could you want?

TheWrap spoke to Rodriguez, whose first “Spy Kids” movie premiered in 2001, about returning to the franchise, what other of his movies he would want to revisit and whether there’ll be another “Alita: Battle Angel” movie.

When did you...

Image
Tony and Patty Torrez-Tango, the new spies in Spy Kids: Armageddon, are 9 and 8 years old respectively, making them younger than Juni and Carmen from the original movies. The newest installment in the Spy Kids franchise maintains the original trilogy's flavor while introducing new characters and a fresh storyline, filled with goofy action and comedy.

Spy Kids: Why Robert Rodriguez's Family Film Became So Popular
Image
Spy Kids is a 2001 family movie directed by Robert Rodriguez. It focuses on young siblings Juni (Daryl Sabara) and Carmen Cortez (Alexa PenaVega), whose parents, Ingrid and Gregorio (played by Carla Gugino and Antonio Banderas), are retired spies. After their parents are kidnapped, Juni and Carmen learn the truth about their family and decide they must become spies like their parents to save them.

At the time, Rodriguez was known for making more adult-centered action films and seemed an odd choice for a family movie. However, he brought his unique perspective to the movie, which was a massive success and made nearly five times its small, $35 million budget at the box office. It also received positive critical reviews, and led to three sequel movies, with a reboot currently in the works. Here’s why the fun family movie became so popular with audiences.

Spy Kids: Armageddon marks the first time that the Cortez siblings didn’t appear in a Spy Kids movie, following their supporting roles in 2011’s Spy Kids: All the Time in the World.
