Spy Kids: Armageddon director Robert Rodriguez explained the reason behind franchise vets Alexa PenaVega and Daryl Sabara’s absence in the Netflix sequel.

The first three installments of the Spy Kids franchise were led by PenaVega and Sabara as they portrayed the respective roles of siblings Carmen Cortez and Juni Cortez, who became spies after rescuing their parents (Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino) in the original 2001 movie. Spy Kids: Armageddon marks the first time that the Cortez siblings didn’t appear in a Spy Kids movie, following their supporting roles in 2011’s Spy Kids: All the Time in the World. In an interview with Yahoo Entertainment, Rodriguez shared why he decided to exclude Carmen and Juni from Armageddon, revealing that he "wanted to reestablish a new family," in order to give the franchise a "fresh start."
