'Based on a True Story' Canceled at Peacock After 2 Seasons
Image
We have some sad news today for fans of Peacock's Based on a True Story, as the streaming platform has given the ax to the dark comedy thriller after just two seasons. Starring The Big Bang Theory's Kaley Cuoco, the series featured her and Chris Messina as married couple Ava and Nathan Bartlett, who, after suffering a series of unfortunate life events, team up with a serial killer (Tom Bateman) to start a true-crime podcast.

Deadline reports that Based on a True Story won't be returning for a third season. The eight-episode first season premiered in 2023, and was followed a year and a half later with another eight episodes in November 2024. At the time of its premiere, creator Craig Rosenberg told various outlets – including Peacock – that his goal was to create a show which examined America's obsession with turning serial killers into celebrities.

Kaley Cuoco's Dark Comedy Series With 79% Rt Score's Future Revealed 5 Months After Season 2
Image
All good stories must come to an end. Peacock has trimmed its original programming, canceling Based on a True Story after two seasons.

Per Deadline, despite earning largely positive reviews from critics, Based on a True Story will not return for a third season on Peacock. Created by Craig Rosenberg, the dark comedy thriller series is a satire of the true crime genre with elements loosely inspired by true events. Both seasons follow married couple Ava and Nathan Bartlett, played by Cuoco and Chris Messina respectively, as they capitalize on America's growing obsession with true crime by launching a podcast with serial killer Matt Pierce (Tom Bateman). The second, and now final, season of eight episodes was released in its entirety on Peacock back in November 2024.

Peacock just made a surprising cancellation and we're not thrilled about it
Image
Just when we thought our watchlist was safe, Peacock has gone and done the unthinkable. In a move that’s left many stunned and more than a little frustrated, the streamer has pulled the plug on one of its most beloved series without so much as a warning. Fans were eagerly awaiting news of a renewal, but what they got instead was a sudden cancellation that no one saw coming. It's just not fair, and the disappointment is undeniable.

On April 15, the streaming service announced that it would not be going forward with a third installment of the dark comedy series Based on a True Story. In other words, fans who were eagerly anticipating the next chapter will now be left with unanswered questions and an unfinished story. This cancellation comes almost five months after the second season dropped. Variety was first to report the news.

The Fate of Peacock’s ‘Based on a True Story’ Has Been Decided
Image
Peacock has officially reached the bookend for its series, Based on a True Story, as Variety reports the streamer has slapped the title with a cancellation. The second season came out all the way back in November, so fans have been waiting months for the final verdict, but it’s not the one they were hoping for. The news is a bit shocking as both seasons of the Kaley Cuoco and Chris Messina-led dark comedy drama performed well with audiences and critics alike, earning positive Rotten Tomatoes ratings. Showing potential for growth, the second season even added 7 points to its score on the online platform, moving from a Season 1 76% critics’ approval rating to Season 2’s 83%. Still, for one reason or another, NBCUniversal’s streamer decided to close the book and move on from Based on a True Story.

The comedies “Based on a True Story” and “Mr. Throwback” have been canceled at Peacock, Variety has learned exclusively. “Based on a True Story” had debuted its second season in November 2024, while “Mr. Throwback” aired its one and only season at the NBCUniversal streamer in August 2024.

Peacock does not release regular viewership information, so gauging the exact audience of either show is difficult, but both received solid reviews upon their release.

“Based on a True” story starred Kaley Cuoco and Chris Messina as a financially struggling couple who decide to start a true crime podcast to investigate whether or not their plumber is in fact a serial killer. The cast also included Tom Bateman, Liana Liberato, and Priscilla Quintana. The show originally premiered in 2023.

Based On A True Story Season 3: Will It Happen? Everything We Know
Image
Peacock's irreverent black comedy Based on a True Story returned for its second season in late 2024, but will the series score a season 3 renewal? Created for the small screen by Craig Rosenberg, the show concerns a true crime-obsessed real estate agent Ava (Kaley Cuoco) who discovers the identity of the notorious serial killer, the "Westside Ripper", and blackmails the slayer into participating in a podcast about her investigation. Cleverly spoofing the rise in true crime content in recent years, Based on a True Story finds a way to make a dark concept uproariously tongue-in-cheek.

Season 2 of Based on a True Story upped the ante after the shocking conclusion of season 1, and catches up with Nathan (Chris Messina) and Ava several months into parenthood. Overwhelmed with their new lives, Ava begins to suspect that the supposedly reformed Matt (Tom Batemen) is actually behind a series of new murders. All this continues...

Based on a True Story Season 2 TV Review: Kaley Cuoco and Chris Messina are back for more murderous shenanigans
Image
Plot: Season two finds new parents Ava and Nathan Bartlett three months into parenthood. Focused on taking care of her family, Ava is determined to resist her true crime obsession and return to work as a real estate agent while Nathan trains private tennis clients. But a series of new murders pulls her back in – is Matt behind the slayings? Is Tory, now entangled in a relationship with Matt, in danger? For a while, life is good — Ava’s TikTok habit and her new friend Drew provide a welcome distraction, and Nathan’s all in on reigniting his tennis career as well as his friendship with Matt — until danger comes knocking, literally.

Review: When the first season of Based on a True Story dropped last year on Peacock, I was not impressed with the story of a couple who started their own true-crime podcast with input from a real serial killer.

Everything to Remember from ‘Based on a True Story’ Season 1
Image
After Season 1’s abrupt cliffhanger, there was no doubt that Peacock’s “Based on a True Story” was angling for a second season, and it’s the increasingly rare show to turn one around in roughly a year once that light turned green.

The first season of Craig Rosenberg’s dark comedy introduced Ava (Kaley Cuoco) and Nathan (Chris Messina), a married couple living in Los Angeles who accidentally cross paths with active serial killer Matt (Tom Bateman) and decide to start a true crime podcast with him. As the specter of the West Side Ripper grows, so too does the podcast’s notoriety, and Matt sinks his claws into the lives of two people in way over their heads and dancing with the devil.

Also they all did drugs and made out with each other. But that was just a dream sequence.

With Season 2 dropping on November 21, here’s...

New Parents Kaley Cuoco, Chris Messina Are Still True-Crime Obsessives in ‘Based on a True Story’ Season 2 Trailer
Image
Kaley Cuoco, Chris Messina, Tom Bateman and Liana Liberato are back with more murder and mayhem in Based on a True Story season two. And this time, there’s a new pint-sized accessory in tow.

Based on a True Story is based on (or partly inspired by) a true story. The series, which satirizes true-crime tropes, introduced Cuoco and Messina as Ava and Nathan, a down-on-their-luck couple who crossed paths with an infamous serial killer, “The Westside Ripper,” in Los Angeles. Ava, a pregnant true-crime obsessive, suggested making a podcast with the killer as a way out of their marital rut.

Now, after the events of season one, season two opens with Ava and Nathan as new parents who attempt to now get out of the true-crime game — but, as the trailer shows, those aspirations are fleeting. The season opens on Ava and Nathan struggling to balance parenthood with waking away from their obsession.

‘Based on a True Story’ Season 2 trailer: The Westside Ripper is back… but is it Matt?
Image
Being a parent is killer — and in more ways than one for the Bartletts on “Based on a True Story.”

On Thursday, Peacock dropped the trailer for Season 2 of the comedic thriller, which finds Ava (Kaley Cuoco) and Nathan (Chris Messina) three months into parenthood and seemingly taking a hiatus from their podcast. Tory (Liana Liberato), Ava’s sister, gets engaged to Matt (Tom Bateman), who is apparently “healing” from his murdering ways. Or is he? The Westside Ripper is killing again, but Matt insists it’s not him.

“That’s what I want to know,” he says.

Kaley Cuoco Might Finally Have Her Real Big Bang Theory Replacement With Returning Murder Mystery Show
Image
A returning murder mystery show seems to have the potential to become the perfect Big Bang Theory replacement for Kaley Cuoco. In a career spanning over 30 years, Kaley Cuoco has starred in a diverse set of movies and TV shows. From portraying Harley Quinn in the DC TV show to portraying the relatively smaller role of Sasha in Prison Break, the actress has displayed remarkable versatility throughout her career. However, despite having so many roles in her acting portfolio, she is best known for playing Penny in The Big Bang Theory.

The Big Bang Theory ended its long run in 2019 after 12 seasons. Since then, Kaley Cuoco has stayed fairly active as an actor and has starred in several movies and shows, like Curd Your Enthusiasm, The Man From Toronto, and Role Play. However, none of these have given her the long-running highs of success that she achieved with The Big Bang Theory.

For Ava that means ditching her true crime obsession to focus on her career as a real estate agent, and for Nathan that means coaching private tennis clinic. Ava even finds a new friend in Drew (Melissa Fumero).

But it isn’t long before they’re pulled back into the world of mystery when a string of new murders emerge. Soon, Ava begins to wonder if Nathan’s friend Matt (Tom Bateman) is behind the killings and if her younger sister Tory (Liana Liberato), who is now dating Matt, is now in danger.

Acting isn’t the lone skill that Kaley Cuoco bears under her belt, as apart from excelling at the small screen for the past two decades, Cuoco is also a pretty skilled athlete. From being a proficient equestrian to almost choosing tennis as a career path over her Hollywood fame, the actress never had to count on one thing to be successful as a teen.

Sherri Chung (‘Based on a True Story’ composer) on creating music that ‘lies within the nuance’ [Exclusive Video Interview]

“It’s the first comedic thriller I’ve ever done. A lot of the projects that I’ve done in the past have been very black and white; they’re heroic, they’re drama, they’re rom-com, and you always know who the antagonist is and you know who you’re supposed to be rooting for,” declares “Based on a True Story” composer Sherri Chung. For our recent webchat she adds, “This was a story where we don’t know if should we be rooting for this guy, is this guy as bad as he said, as bad as we think he is, is he as good as we think he is?
