Victor J. Kemper, the former president of the American Society of Cinematographers whose career spanned four decades and included films as diverse as Dog Day Afternoon and Pee Wee’s Big Adventure, has died according to the ASC. He was 96.
Kemper made films with many of the greats of ’70s cinema, including John Cassavetes, Arthur Hiller, Michael Ritchie, Peter Yates, Sidney Lumet, George Roy Hill, Robert Wise, Carl Reiner, Richard Attenborough and Norman Jewison.
His very first film was Cassavetes’ Husbands, and it was an education in itself.
“We shot more than a million-and-a-half feet of film during 10 weeks in New York and 12 weeks in London,” Kemper recalled. “That’s the way Cassavetes worked.”
He went on to make Mikey & Nicky with the director.
Subsequent work included The Candidate, And Justice for All, Audrey Rose, Slap Shot, Oh God!, The Gambler, The Jerk, The Four Seasons, Coma, Mr. Mom, Pee Wee’s Big Adventure,...

The phrase “they don’t make them like they used to” is thrown around a lot in the context of nostalgia, but in the case of the first teaser for Magic, it’s quite accurate. Imagine sitting around the TV with your family and seeing this commercial pop up on screen back in the 1970s. The simple but terrifying ad didn’t give away much about the actual plot, but it did instill a lot of traumatic nightmares for any young viewers that happened to catch it. The TV spot was so effective that it’s arguably scarier than the actual film; it wasn’t the straightforward horror story the teaser indicated but much more a psychological thriller. Released 45 years ago on November 8, 1978, Magic is an underappreciated classic and one of horror’s most unnerving love stories.

This lesser-known suspense thriller is an excellent adaptation of a novel by Graham Greene, and a fine showcase for actor Anthony Hopkins and the upcoming Kristin Scott Thomas, with an able assist from Derek Jacobi. A Paris lawyer is sentenced to die as a random hostage of the German occupiers, but swaps with another prisoner with a desperate, questionable death-cell contract. Three years later, he must pretend not to be himself when he returns to the house he traded for his life, to face a woman who has sworn to kill the man who allowed her brother to die. Fans of Hannibal Lecter will be impressed by Hopkins’ deep, absorbing performance — the show’s moral tension and strange twists of fate are quite moving.

Brit film producer Jonathan Sothcott and his London based production house Hereford Films are set to release their first nerve-jangling horror feature Aura this August. The “Blumhouse style” Us-set science horror explores the curious world of Kirlian energy/photography within the context of a supernatural, possession movie. It’s an innovative and frightening looking spin on a classic horror concept, that blends the best of many sub-genres.
“Aura tells the story of Mitch Walker and his wife Diane who inherist his uncle’s house. Inside they discover an old camera designed for Kirlian Photography – the practice of capturing the subject’s ‘Aura’. Mitch’s sister Karen suffered a serious trauma at the house during her childhood after being tied up by their uncle and has been institutionalized ever since. As Mitch pieces the facts together with the help of local clairvoyant, Ada, he realizes that their uncle was in fact...

Horror-by-numbers tale about grieving parents who unwittingly unleash the undead and wish they hadn’t
Standard issue back-from-the-dead scares ahoy in this grieving parents chiller, which gestures toward the likes of Don’t Look Now and Audrey Rose but falls far short of either. Sarah Wayne Callies is an American mother in Mumbai who visits a remote temple to contact her deceased son, and unwittingly opens the door to the undead. Creepy screamy faces and accompanying loud noises are employed to jumpy effect, but a few shivers aside, this remains ghost-train fare – mostly mechanical and largely unsurprising.

The horror genre has harboured countless paranormal thrillers about troubled teens/ children (and their rotten antics) over the years. Some made an impact while others swiftly faded from memory due to being mostly hackneyed or cumbersome. From obvious classics like The Shining, The Exorcist and Carrie to lesser thrillers, Audrey Rose, The Exorcism of

Move that Thanksgiving feast to the couch, because you have a lot of Netflix-watching to do before December 1, when these movies will disappear from the streaming service. Welcome back to The Stack. It's me, Dave Canfield, throwing some Halloween coverage at ya. This year has seen some amazing releases. In addition to what is mentioned in the headline, I recommend the Universal Classic Monsters 30 Film DVD Box Set. For you art-house horror nuts, Jim Jarmusch's Only Lovers Left Alive is worth your time and attention. Twilight Time blew me away with their triple threat Blu-ray debuts of The Blob (1988), The Believers, and Audrey Rose. Grindhouse FIlms knocks it out of the park with their stunning Cannibal Holocaust 2 Blu-ray and soundtrack CD set. Lastly, Aubrey Plaza brings that zombie-like stare in a bit of typecasting to Life After Beth. You can watch the video below!...

Last year, James put together a comprehensive guide, of every piece of Halloween programming and horror movie that would air during the month of October. When I asked him if we were doing the same again this year, he acted like I was an idiot. Why wouldn’t we? With that knowledge in my head, I decided we would expand a little bit this year, and throw together a comprehensive DVD & Blu-ray buyer’s guide for the months of September and October. There are some really great horror releases between now and the end of October. Some studios wasted their opportunity to rope in the rabid genre fans. Fox, for example, except for a new Wrong Turn film, and a few catalog releases making their Blu-ray debuts(Exorcist sequels), has a calendar filled with nonsensical re-releases of titles that are already widely available, and at cheap prices.

Picking up where the big studios have been leaving off, home video label Twilight Time has for the last few years been releasing some pretty damn awesome horror flicks on Blu-ray, including the original Fright Night and Tom Savini's remake of Night of the Living Dead.
Joining them next is the 1988 version of The Blob, headed our way just in time for Halloween! As the company just revealed, October 14th will mark the Blu-ray release of The Blob.
Joining it on Blu will be a handful of other horror films, including Audrey Rose (1977), The Believers (1987), Man Hunt (1941), Under Fire (1983), and The Vanishing (1993).
Typical for Twilight Time, all of the releases will be limited with The Blob being cut off at 5,000 copies and the others limited to only 3,000.
Directed by Chuck Russell, The Blob is one of the better horror remakes we've yet seen, centering on a strange pink life...

The reps over at Twilight Time have given Shock the heads-up that it has a handful of new titles making their way to Blu-ray this October. Twilight Time is one of those specialty Blu-ray outfits that occasionally release very limited runs of some of your favorite titles (like, Fright Night for instance).
Coming October 14th, you can expect: Audrey Rose, The Believers, The Blob and The Vanishing ('93).

The Possession poster "Pray for Her," reads the headline in The Possession poster. But why should anyone bother praying for "her"? Because the young girl in question has been possessed by a spirit — a dibbuk — that may eventually destroy her soul. Apparently a mix of The Exorcist, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Audrey Rose, Poltergeist, and The Host, The Possession is purportedly based on a true story about a young girl who becomes obsessed with an antique wooden box. Lionsgate will release the horror drama on August 31 in the United States. Natasha Calis plays the girl; Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Kyra Sedgwick are her parents. Nightwatch‘s Ole Bornedal directed from a screenplay by Juliet Snowden and Stiles White. Spider-Man‘s Sam Raimi is one of the film’s producers. The Possessed‘s poster was found at Fearnet.com.

Syfy officially renewed Haven for a 13-episode third season last October and production started last month. While the previous seasons had a summer release, Syfy has pushed back the season 3 premiere to September.
According to Haven co-star Eric Balfour, the third season will premiere in the Us on September 21st at 9pm. While we don’t have specific details on upcoming storylines, it was previously revealed that the new season will pick up right where season 2 left off:

Chicago – For every nice girl on the prairie, there needed to be an evil opposite who wasn’t so nice. Nellie Oleson was that nasty girl on the NBC-tv legend “Little House on the Prairie, and Alison Arngrim portrayed her. She has parlayed that long ago child actor part into a stand-up routine and new memoir about her experiences.
From 1974-1981, Alison Arngrim was the girl TV audiences loved to hate. After years of shunning her former nasty image, Arngrim’s new book is called “Confessions of a Prairie Bitch: How I Survived Nellie Oleson and Learned to Love Being Hated.” The memoir is a mix of light hearted humor about her former TV persona and personal tragedy about desperate real-life family secrets.

Remember books? You know those collections of paper that had writing on them? Think analog websites. Well, back in the olden days, they could be as scary as movies.
I grew up a bookworm courtesy of my parents. They read constantly, and made sure I had a library card as soon as I could read. (Libraries = analog ISPs.) I devoured horror paperbacks, and in one notable reading marathon, read Audrey Rose, beginning to end, in one 24 hour sitting. I even spent the summer I turned 12 working at Aunt Bonnie’s Used Books in Helena, Mt. No salary; I was paid in all the paperbacks I could lug home, which meant my collection of horror movie novelizations grew into the hundreds. (I sold them all in college for money and have spent the last decade buying them all again.)
Now it’s the future, and more and more people turn to the Internet for reading material.
