But he saved the biggest tribute for his costar of 40 years, Vanna White, who Sajak called his “professional other half,” and “a very special woman.”
“Every time we taped a show, I met three new people from all parts of this wonderful country, and the world, who were kind and considerate, who rooted for each other, who took great pride in talking about their family, their hometown, their friends, their schools, their jobs, even their pets,” Sajak said. “In the end, they were the real stars of the show. I genuinely like these people, and I’ll miss the chance to meet more of them.

British television is brutal. The job security of actors, even in leading roles, is perilous. From the urtext, Spooks, where everyone from Keeley Hawes to Matthew Macfadyen cut their teeth, through to ITV’s returning Monday night drama, Unforgotten, writers have always been willing to throw their characters under the bus (sometimes literally). The challenge, then, is reacclimating audiences, once the dust settles, to a very different version of the same old show.
Back for its fifth season, Unforgotten is still reeling from the death of Nicola Walker’s Cassie Stuart. Di Sunny Khan (Sanjeev Bhaskar) is grieving, while incoming Dci Jessie James (Sinéad Keenan) is met by a rather cold shoulder. She doesn’t help herself: at home, her family life is falling apart, and the new gig couldn’t come at a worse time. Both she and Sunny are thinking of chucking it all in: Sunny is interrupted...

Stars In Their Eyes returned to ITV tonight (Saturday January 10) after a nine-year absence from our screens - but was it any good?
The format has remained largely the same, with members of the public announcing which singer they will be impersonating before disappearing into a cloud of smoke and emerging transformed into that singer.
However, the revamped Stars In Their Eyes saw a more comedic tone employed by new host Harry Hill, who follows in the footsteps of previous hosts Leslie Crowther, Matthew Kelly and Cat Deeley.
The new version of the show sparked a great deal of discussion on Twitter, with the majority of commenters expressing their disappointment:

However, the revamped Stars In Their Eyes saw a more comedic tone employed by new host Harry Hill, who follows in the footsteps of previous hosts Leslie Crowther, Matthew Kelly and Cat Deeley.
The new version of the show sparked a great deal of discussion on Twitter, with the majority of commenters expressing their disappointment:

It started at the end of the summer, and now we're just days (you could even count in hours if you're really keen) away from Christmas Day. And like the arrival of Santa down the chimney, we couldn't be much more excited about the Strictly Come Dancing 2014 finale.
Caroline Flack, Simon Webbe, Frankie Bridge and Mark Wright are this year's Final 4 preparing to duke it out on the dancefloor and shake their tailfeathers until they won't shake no more for our votes.

Only one person can win and although Caroline and Frankie are the clear bookies' favourites, they are by no means home and dry. It will probably come down to those dreaded showdances, which can make or break a celebrities whole Strictly journey.

Tim here. We’ve all had a few days for the recent trailer for Disney’s upcoming pillaging of former glories live-action Sleeping Beauty riff Maleficent to sink in (full disclosure: all I get is a big rotten whiff of Snow White and the Huntsman with a bigger role for its face-saving Prima Donna as the villain). So I’d like to take a moment to rewind 55 years back to the first Maleficent, for no better – and certainly, no worse – reason than that she’s one of the very best villains not only in the Disney canon, but in cinema as a whole. And while it’s never the wrong time to pay attention to one of the finest pieces of draftsmanship in the whole of American character animation, it’s nice to have an excuse.
The question, “Why is Maleficent so damn awesome?” has many answers, but here’s the easy one: black.

The Phantom of the Opera (2004, directed by Joel Schumacher) is a lavish depiction of its world, examining the nature of facade – the un-reality of the stage, the masked Phantom of the title, and the duality of “costume” within costume (the majority of clothes on screen are designed as costumes for use in performances in the narrative). Costume designer Alexandra Byrne makes use of symbolic colour palettes and silhouettes to bring this heightened world to life.
We are first taken into the world of the Opera Populaire, 1870, with the dress rehearsal of “Hannibal”. It is interesting to note that not all are wearing full “costume” – corsets and petticoats draw attention to the central performance element. While in rehearsals at the Brooklyn Academy of Music for Rufus Wainwright's "Prima Donna," Jess Brown was preparing to audition for the role of Elaine Robinson in a production of "The Graduate" at the Ivoryton Playhouse in Ivoryton, Conn. After seeing the casting notice for the show in Back Stage, Brown began her research on the character, the daughter of the infamous Mrs. Robinson. "After reading the play in its entirety, I decided to do something rather questionable -- I watched the movie," she says. "Although this is known to be a major faux pas among actors, I felt justified in my actions because the play was primarily based on the original film, starring Dustin Hoffman and Katharine Ross. Knowing this, I felt that to be cast, I would need to exemplify certain qualities of the original Elaine while still making it my own."On arriving at the audition,...

Very few Broadway news stories excited me as much this week as Woody Allen’s announcement that he was turning one of his best films, Bullets Over Broadway, into a Main Stem musical. Yet, I did celebrate with the rest of Linda Lavin’s fans when the producers of The Lyons – in which she gave an award-worthy performance off-Broadway last fall — announced that the show was also coming to the Great White Way. Plus, as a huge devotee of the movie Once, I was thrilled for EW to get another sneak peak at the making of next month’s Broadway adaptation.

Mark Ronson is the latest in a growing line of musicians to wander over to the high culture side of the playing field. The DJ/producer, known for his work with Amy Winehouse, Lily Allen and Ghostface Killah, is collaborating with Andrew Wyatt of Miike Snow (who, by the way, did this great thing recently) and fashion designer Gareth Pugh on a dance piece for the Royal Ballet in London, the BBC reports.
The piece, which is currently untitled, will include nine songs from Ronson and co., and "focus on the Jungian theme of anima/animus and the theory of collective masculine and feminine unconscious," making it as vague as possible for us to visualize. But based on our limited understanding of anima/animus -- which refer to the suppressed inner woman in males and inner men in females -- we're hoping this involves some gender role reversals.

Nearly five years after a dropped deal with the Metropolitan Opera and three years after it premiered at the Palace Theatre in Manchester, England, Rufus Wainwright's first opera, "Prima Donna," landed at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York for its U.S. premiere Sunday afternoon. Angelica Houston, Lou Reed and Laurie Anderson could be spotted in the audience, alongside Wainwright himself, who looked sharp in a bedazzled toreador outfit.
The opera, written in French with English subtitles (and co-written by Bernadette Colomine), follows an acclaimed, but forgotten soprano, Regine Saint Laurent, who is preparing a return to the stage in the role she was known for, "Alienor d'Aquitaine." Regine is panic-stricken about reprising Alienor, convinced her voice is forever gone. In her somewhat deranged state, she latches on to a young journalist who is all too ready to lavish attention on her.

Once upon a time not long ago, in a living room not so far away, was a television set that opened up a magical, comical, crazy world filled with fuzzy, funny make-believe characters too great to simply be called puppets. No, these were The Muppets, and we loved them completely. Great thanks goes out to Jason Segel for making his dream of a Muppets return come true this Wednesday, but most importantly, boundless thanks should be given to Jim Henson himself, creator of The Muppets, on the holiday of gratitude. We Are Movie Geeks would like to extend our own thanks, and in doing so, presents out Top Ten Muppets Hall of Fame.

Michael Scott is gone from "The Office," and that's a bummer. But this might help brighten your day: Subtle Sexuality is back.
The show's latest webisode features the reunion of Kelly (Mindy Kaling) and Erin's (Ellie Kemper) pop group, who have put out a new single called "The Girl Next Door." Like their previous song "Male Prima Donna," it features a goofy video with contributions from Ry Howard (B.J. Novak) -- and it's quite catchy, in a feeling-blue, staring-out-your-rain-soaked-window kind of way.
The video is accompanied by a "Behind the Music"-style segment about Subtle Sexuality's ups and downs since "Male Prima Donna," from the highs of a pre-hockey game national anthem gig to the lows of being booed out of a karaoke bar. There have also been some personnel changes, although that's news to Andy (Ed Helms).
Both videos are below. "The Office" begins its post-Steve Carell life at 9 p.

Happy Birthday to Patti LuPone, who turns 62 today, and John Cameron Mitchell, who's 48.
Rufus Wainwright will perform a free show with the NYC Opera on June 28th at 7 Pm Est at New York’s World Financial Center Winter Garden Theater. He'll premiere excerpts from his upcoming original opera Prima Donna, as well as performing some of his favorite arias. A couple of days ago we mentioned the new Trailblazer Campaign from James Duke Mason, and below you can see Chad Allen's contribution.
New On DVD: The big release this week is The King's Speech, which won four Oscars, including one for out producer Iain Canning. Also out is the Jack Black flop Gulliver's Travels, and birthday boy John Cameron Mitchell's Rabbit Hole, which finally gave Nicole Kidman a meaty role again. There's good news and bad news for Happy Endings. The bad news is that the ratings for the second week were ... down.

Blessed with great fortune and beset by tragedy throughout her life, two-time Academy Award-winner Elizabeth Taylor, who passed away today at the age of 79, has more than earned her place among cinema's lasting legends.

New York — Rufus Wainwright was in a celebratory mood at Carnegie Hall on Monday night. Just hours after the New York City Opera said it would host the first American production of Wainwright's debut opera, "Prima Donna," sometime in 2012, the singer/songwriter also told the audience about his engagement to partner of five years Jörn Weisbrodt.
"I proposed over an Indian meal," Wainwright told VanityFair.com earlier. "I was very nonchalant, like, 'Maybe we should get married. Will you marry me?' "
Wainwright, who was later joined onstage by sister Martha Wainwright and her year-old son, Arcangelo, gave an intimate performance of his sixth studio album, All Days Are Nights: Songs for Lulu, which was inspired in part by his mother, the late Kate McGarrigle.

Since April, “the greatest songwriter on the planet”—according to Elton John, anyway—has been traveling the globe in support of his sixth studio album, All Days Are Nights: Songs for Lulu (Decca/Universal Music Group). It’s a stripped–down affair, with nothing but a piano accompanying Rufus Wainwright’s operatic voice—and we do mean operatic. The 12–track collection includes “Les Feux d’artifice t’appellent," the final aria from Wainwright’s opera, Prima Donna. The current tour is similarly stripped–down: the first half of each show is presented as a continuous song cycle set to video art by Douglas Gordon. “It’s an opportunity to have this slight intimacy with me, which I know everyone wants,” Wainwright says with a laugh. On August 28, the Canadian singer/songwriter performs in Southampton at “The Last Song of Summer,” the Watermill Center’s third annual benefit concert to support...

As a promotional effort for her upcoming summer release "Bionic", Christina Aguilera has mapped a massive tour across North America. She will kick off the gig on July 15 and will take "The X Factor" winner Leona Lewis as her supporting act.
Tickets for the traveling show will go on sale beginning May 21. Concertgoers who purchase tickets before June 4 will receive a download code for a digital copy of the album on June 7, one day prior to its official release.
