“Parks and Recreation” debuted April 9, 2009, just three months after Barack Obama’s inauguration. A perfect alignment, one might think, considering how much the NBC sitcom embodied the 44’s “Yes we can” spirit. However, the tone of its much-neglected, much-derided first season was more akin to the Bush era: cynical, polarizing, and slightly clueless.
Subsequently, its opening six episodes have largely been consigned to history: the general advice to newcomers is skip them entirely and start with the sunnier second season. But while the show undoubtedly benefited from its course correction, its initial glimpse into the fictional Pawnee’s madcap P&r department isn’t the disaster often purported.
Much of the criticism inevitably focused on its similarities to “The Office.” The show was conceived as a spin-off from the corporate satire after all, and shares a creator (Greg Daniels), cast member (Rashida Jones), and mockumentary format. Its premiere was even...

Actress Pamela Reed has had a successful acting career since she debuted on-screen in 1976. Over the years, she had starred in a range of roles, attesting to the actress’ versatility. Although not a leading lady in film and television, Reed has carved a niche as a character actor. Reed, who’s from Tacoma, Washington, was born on April 2, 1949. Reed achieved international recognition in film after starring alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger in the action comedy Kindergarten Cop (1990). She followed it up with other notable roles in Bean (1997), Proof of Life (2000), Savannah Sunrise (2016), and The Burial (2023).

This is a contract case, but in a unprecedented move O’Keefe decides to hire Willie E. Gary (Jamie Foxx) a flashy black personal injury lawyer. Jurnee Smollett lets her résumé speak for itself in "The Burial." In this exclusive look at the new movie, which hit theaters on Oct. 6, the "Lovecraft Country" actor stars as Mame Downes, a new power defense attorney who comes to town to go up against smooth-talking lawyer Willie E. Gary (played by Jamie Foxx). And by the sound of her track record, she's nothing to play with.
Hearing of her college degree from Howard University, Foxx's Willie, impressed, quips, "Oh, that mean she just ain't a woman, she a Black woman."
The clip then cuts to Smollett's Mame as she struts through an airport with luggage in hand and a pair of black shades covering her stone-cold look. She means business. Meanwhile, junior counselor Hal (Mamoudou Athie) continues to run off her accomplishments: "Graduated top of her class from Harvard Law School, Jesus Christ." Now, currently the youngest partner ever at her law firm,...

There’s a story of thrillingly righteous indignation sitting at the core of Maggie Betts’s The Burial. This flashy legal melodrama is fitfully stirring but too flabby to deliver the walloping blow that it needs. The high points are delivered primarily by Jamie Foxx and Tommy Lee Jones, who make a good effort to fill in the gaps left by the spotty screenplay.
Based on a New Yorker article by A Civil Action author Jonathan Harr, the film works as hard to get its audience interested in contract law as Foxx’s high-octane personal injury lawyer, Willie Gary, does when whipping up a jury’s emotions about arcane legal matters. The case in question pits Mississippi funeral home director Jeremiah O’Keefe (Jones) against the Loewen Group, a funeral home and cemetery company, after the conglomerate stalled on an agreement to buy some of the man’s locations, possibly to run him out of business.

There’s been a shocking amount of horror movies released in August and September. Now that it’s October, it’s going to seem far more appropriate, with the month starting off with a doozie. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
Way back in 1973, William Peter Blatty‘s 1971 novel, “The Exorcist,” was adapted into a movie by the late William Friedkin, becoming a huge theatrical phenomenon that is still thought of as one of the scariest horror movies ever made. It introduced many Americans to the idea of possession and exorcism, making household names of Linda Blair and Ellen Burstyn, both who received Oscar nominations. The movie received 10 bids total, winning for Blatty’s screenplay and the sound.
Fifty years later and filmmaker David Gordon Green has followed his mostly successful “Halloween” sequel trilogy with “The Exorcist: Believer,” the first of three movies in the works. The...

The Burial tells the story of funeral home owner and former politician Jerry O’Keefe (Tommy Lee Jones) and his case against the Loewen Group, spearheaded by flashy personal injury lawyer Willie E. Gary (Jamie Foxx). The film, based on a real case in Hinds County, Mississippi, in 1995, is the sophomore narrative feature from Maggie Betts, with a screenplay by Doug Wright and Betts.
O’Keefe is the father of 13 children with 22 grandchildren and a mountain of debt he’s been hiding from everyone, including his wife (Pamela Reed). And at his age, his focus is on securing his legacy to make sure his large family is taken care of after he’s gone. Though he owns multiple funeral homes, debt has forced him to sell. His attorney and friend Mike Allred (Alan Ruck) sets up a meeting with Raymond Loewen (Bill Camp), the billionaire owner of the Loewen Group, who...

The Burial is a not-so-great title; it sounds like a horror film. I hope it doesn’t keep people away from this highly entertaining, crowd-pleasing movie that otherwise is an example of what good old fashioned Hollywood filmmaking can still be all about in the right hands. It feels bigger than life, but it is based on some pretty big lives indeed.
This lively courtroom true story has taken awhile to get to its closeup. Inspired by a November 1999 New Yorker article by Jonathan Harr, The Burial, which provides choice lead roles for Oscar winners Tommy Lee Jones and Jamie Foxx, has taken a long circuitous route to production. Directors like Jonathan Demme and Ron Howard were in and out along the way until it finally wound up in the hands of Maggie Betts, best known for 2017’s wildly different religious drama Novitiate.

The SAG-AFTRA Foundation announced today that it has raised more than $7.8 million dollars in contributions for its Covid-19 Relief Fund for SAG-AFTRA artists in dire need.
On March 16, the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, along with the SAG-AFTRA Motion Picture Players’ Welfare Fund, launched a Covid-19 Relief Fund for SAG-AFTRA members. Since activating the Fund, the Foundation has already given over $5.1 million in emergency financial assistance to more than 5,484 SAG-AFTRA artists and their families with hundreds of applications still in process and thousands of performers still in need.
For over 35 years, the SAG-AFTRA Foundation has been a vital resource for SAG-AFTRA performers seeking emergency financial assistance. But due to what has amounted to a near industry-wide shutdown, thousands of performers have been unable to work, and many second and third survival jobs have also been eliminated during the crisis.

Tom Hanks, one of the first celebrities to contract the coronavirus, is urging his fellow actors to contribute to the SAG-AFTRA Foundation’s Covid-19 Relief Fund, which said Monday it has raised more than $7.8 million in contributions to aid SAG-AFTRA members in dire financial need.
“The devastating effects of Covid-19 are in our own backyard, and we’re doing what we can for our colleagues and collaborators who need help,” said Hanks, a member of the foundation’s Actors’ Council who along with his wife, Rita Wilson, have played major roles in the fundraising efforts. Like Hanks, Wilson tested positive for the virus in March while he was filming Elvis, the Elvis Presley biopic, in Australia.

This week on NCIS: Los Angeles, as Callen and Sam raced to Egypt to get a bead on kidnapped colleague Fatima Namazi, they required an assist from Vostanik Sabatino. For loyal viewers of the CBS procedural, the moment was loaded with highly entertaining meaning, given the team’s previous interactions with the CIA officer (played by ER alum Erik Palladino).
The previous episode similarly brought back Bar Paly as the always enigmatic Anna Kolcheck — another reliable player that is intermittently called off of NCIS: La‘s deep, well-established bench.

TV shows have been taking on politics for decades. Long before “The Handmaid’s Tale” and “House of Cards” hit the small screen, viewers got inside looks at presidential campaigns, White House senior staffers, and the world of counterterrorism. Take a look back at the greatest political TV shows of all time.
Yes, Minister (1980-82)
We start our list on the other side of the pond. This classic British show starred Paul Eddington as the minister of the (fictional) Department of Administrative Affairs, with Nigel Harthorne and Derek Fowlds as his two secretaries. The show inspired numerous spinoffs and was a favorite of Iron Lady Margaret Thatcher.
Tanner ’88 (1988)
This early political mockumentary miniseries from Garry Trudeau (“Doonesbury”) provided a behind-the-scenes look at the fictional campaign of former Michigan representative Jack Tanner as he sought to secure the Democratic Party’s nomination for President. What does the American dream mean to you? Hardworking folk just want the job and the house and the family as promised in the ‘old’ Contract With America that began to slip out of reach in the 1970s. To examine the social absurdities at the tacky end of the consumer divide, Bo Goldman and Jonathan Demme’s marvelous film follows Melvin Dummar, a luckless a guy who became an involuntary media sensation. You just want to hug plucky Paul Le Mat and adorable Mary Steenburgen, even though there’s not a thing to be done for them: going to ‘Easy Street’ isn’t so easy, not even after being named in a billionaire’s Last Will and Testament.

It’s not always a compliment to note that a movie feels like the right fit for Sundance. Festival faves often deflate when they reach the real world, unable to survive without the eager enthusiasm of film fans. The Sundance premiere “The Long Dumb Road” is undeniably cut from familiar cloth. But it’s got enough charm to keep it buoyant long after Robert Redford waves the last blogger goodbye.
As with all road movies, its success rides on the company we’re required to keep. Happily, our two leads are unflaggingly delightful companions.
The trip begins when naïve teen Nat leaves home for his first year of college. He’s driving from Austin to Los Angeles when his car breaks down, putting him in a panic. "You're one of the realest people I think I've ever met." The Film Arcade has revealed the first official trailer for indie comedy The Long Dumb Road, which premiered as the Closing Night film at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. The film stars Tony Revolori (from The Grand Budapest Hotel) as a boy leaving home to drive cross country towards college. He decides to give a ride to a stranger he randomly meets along the way. The two both find themselves at personal crossroads and decide to embark on an unplanned road trip across the American Southwest, ending up in all kinds of trouble. Comedian Jason Mantzoukas co-stars as Richard in this, along with Taissa Farmiga, Ron Livingston, Grace Gummer, Casey Wilson, Pamela Reed, Ciara Bravo, and Cynthy Wu. It's a fun road trip film, as mildly amusing as it looks here. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster...

Welcome to the Jason Mantzoukas show. The Long Dumb Road, directed by Hannah Fidell, leans full-tilt into the anarchic charm of the long-time cult comedian to decidedly mixed results. Though it’s hard to blame the actor. Co-starring Tony Revolori (The Grand Budapest Hotel), the film concerns two strangers brought together on the… road. One is Nat (Revolori), an art school-bound teen lacking in experience; the other a recently-fired, middle-aged wanderer named Richard (Mantzoukas). On the way to Los Angeles, the duo become fast friends before it all starts to get complicated. Running 90 minutes and featuring some lovely southwestern scenery (courtesy of Andrew Droz Palermo), the film moves along at a nice clip until it begins to run out of steam.
Revolori’s doing fine work here, but the bulk of the weight lies on Mantzoukas. As written by Fidell and Carson D. Mell, the script demands a lot from the actor.

The irrepressible Robin Williams is Joey, a trash-talking Cadillac salesman with three women on the line, who becomes an involuntary hero when Tim Robbins smashes his motorcycle into the car showroom and threatens to kill everybody.
