In the 1960s, Gilbert Ralston began work in television and film writing, including the screenplay for Willard (1971). This was based on the book 'Ratman's Notebooks' written by Stephen Gilbert. Gilbert Ralston spent his final years in a South Carolina nursing home, where he died in 1999.

    There are numerous articles erroneously identifying Gilbert Ralston and Stephen Gilbert as one person. Coincidentally, both men were born in 1912 just six months apart. Willard (1971) and Ben (1972) screenwriter Gilbert Ralston died in 1999. Northern Ireland-based novelist Stephen Gilbert (Ratman's Notebooks) died in 2010.
