A blind radical fundamentalist Islamic cleric from Egypt, he was arrested, tried and convicted of plotting to blow up several landmarks in New York City, including the World Trade Center and the United Nations Building, in 1995. Sentenced to life in prison with no possibility of parole, he died of diabetes and coronary artery disease in a federal prison in North Carolina in 2017.
