Freddy Quinn was born on 27 September 1931 in Lower Austria and grew up in Vienna. His popularity as singer and actor in the German speaking region soared in the late 1950s and 1960s, when he adopted the persona of the rootless wanderer who goes to sea but longs for a home, family and friends. His first hit was "Heimweh", the German version of Dean Martin's "Memories Are Made Of This". Due to his musical success, he appeared on several movies such as Freddy, die Gitarre und das Meer (1959).

Has sung in 12 different languages, including German, English, French, Dutch, and Finnish.

His father (Johann Quinn) was an Irish-born salesman, his mother (Edith Henriette Nidl) was an Austrian journalist.

After growing up in Vienna and his parents&#39; divorce, his father took
him to the US, but Freddy soon returned to Europe.

Sold over 8 million copies of his first hit record &quot;Heimweh&quot;
(Homesickness). which ranked #1 in the German charts for five months
(1956).

Performed onstage in roles ranging from &quot;Prince Orlofsky&quot; in &#39;The Bat&#39; to the titular King (of Siam) in &#39;The King and I&#39;.

Had ten number 1 hits in the West German single charts between 1956 and 1966.

He is one of the best selling West German artists of the 1950s and 1960s. In total, he has sold over 60 million records.
