Latido Films Brings to the Market Two Awaited Spanish Thrillers, ’El Sustituto,’ & ’La Mirada de Lucía’(Exclusive)
Image
Lending some bigger movie heft to the Malaga market, Latido Films is bringing onto the international sales scene two thrillers – though very different propositions – from Academy Award winning producer Tornasol Media (“The Secret in Their Eyes”).

“Thrillers have high export potential, but they’re a highly competitive market and since Spanish movies can’t compete with U.S. films’ star power, they have to offer something else,” said Latido Films head Antonio Saura.

Both in production, what Imanol Uribe’s “La Mirada de Lucía” and Oscar Aibar’s “El sustituto” offer is high quality entertainment grounded in different but powerful social realities.

The directors go about addressing that reality in highly different ways, however.

Winner of San Sebastian’s Golden Shell with “Running Out of Time” and “Bwana,” a feat only achieved by five other directors, the first Francis Ford Coppola, Imanol Uribe’s “La mirada de Lucía,” written by...

Blu-ray Review: Beautiful, Mesmerizing World of ‘Blancanieves’
Chicago – There’s something even more bittersweet and poignant about the beautiful, mesmerizing “Blancanieves,” new to Blu-ray and DVD, when one thinks that it was one of the last movies that Roger Ebert fell in love with. The legendary critic adored this film so much that he programmed it for the Overlooked Film Festival, which unspooled shortly after his death. Seeing the film now and the way it deals with loss while also paying homage to the history of cinema, it seems almost like a tribute to the man who engendered a love of film for so many people. Although the connection to Ebert is only the final beautiful twist to a major piece of work, one of the more engaging and well-made films of 2013. This film is a special one. Don’t miss it.

Rating: 4.5/5.0

I’ll admit that I didn’t see “Blancanieves” in theaters and kind of avoided it.

Why, give her the silent treatment of course. To put everyone on an equal footing, however, director Pablo Berger, whose “Torremolinos 73” deals with an encyclopedia salesman and his wife who make an adult movie, gives everyone the silent treatment. Perhaps this is because “Blancanieves” is a silent film, paying homage to the 1920s silent pics in Europe, [ Read More ]

Cohen Media's Blancanieves Directed by Pablo Berger Opens March 29
Not only is this great film Blancanieves, written and directed by Pablo Berger (Torremolinos), international sales agent 6 Sales' Marina Fuentes♀, opening theatrically in the U.S. on March 29 thanks to Cohen Media, it is the film we the jury at the 2013 Palm Springs International Film Festival awarded the Cine Latino Award And it has swept the Goyas (the Academy Award equivalent) in Spain. This film which I previously blogged about, is the film which took so long to make that The Artist, took its place in our own Academy Awards last year. Had this one only come first ... this is the real winner. It is a fairytale and much more; it depicts Spain and Seville in the time of fascism and leaves a tear upon the place.

**Winner of the Special Jury Prize at the 2012 San Sebastian Film Festival**

**Winner of Best Actress in a Narrative Feature at the 2012 San Sebastian Film Festival**

**Official Selection of the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival**

**Official Selection of the 2012 Warsaw International Film Festival**

Blancanieves, a re-working of the Brothers Grimm classic fairy tale "Snow White," is a breathtakingly beautiful film and a uniquely spirited homage to the black-and-white Golden Age of Europe's silent cinema. Set in a romanticized 1920s Seville, Berger's Snow White is Carmen (Macarena García), the daughter of a famous bull fighter, who lives under the tyrannical rule of her monstrous, evil stepmother, Encarna (Maribel Verdú). She escapes and joins a troupe of bullfighting dwarves, where her beauty and natural talent in the ring attract notices from the press. But soon the news reaches Encarna, who at last she knows where to find Carmen, and she prepares for the final showdown.

Written and Directed by: Pablo Berger

Starring: Maribel Verdú, Daniel Giménez Cacho, Ángela Molina, Pere Ponce, and introducing, Macarena García
