Doctor Who has a habit of taking a throwaway line and making it into a big deal.
In 60th anniversary special “Wild Blue Yonder”, Russell T. Davies wrote what seemed like a passing joke about Isaac Newton mishearing the word ″gravity″ as “mavity” before committing to the bit and changing the word in the timeline from that point onwards, making the gag not so inconsequential after all.
Mavity isn’t alone in the show’s history. Throwaway lines have been seized upon and expanded over the years, some by the show’s fandom, but also by its writers. What started as world-building, texture or a dramatic beat has become the foundation for a whole new level of storytelling.

When audiences see Wicked on the big screen, director Jon M. Chu promises to expect live vocals.
In a preview with Vanity Fair, the director shared that both Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo insisted on singing live during the production. Grande stars as Glinda, opposite Erivo’s Elphaba in the film.
“These are live vocals,” Chu said. “When we were shooting it, those girls were like, ‘Fuck the pre-records. We’re going live.’ ”
Despite feeling skeptical and questioning the decision (“There’s going to be a lot of wind in your air pipes. Is that okay?” he recalled asking), Chu said the stars “didn’t miss a beat” and said, “Yeah. That’s what we do.”
While performing “Defying Gravity,” Erivo “had a harness pulling and pushing and yanking and tugging on every nook and cranny that there is,” Grande described. Meanwhile, Erivo said of Grande: “I’m literally never...

The Broadway musical Wicked will be getting its cinematic adaptation this year. The musical has been divided into two parts, with Part One set to be released on November 27, 2024. It stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo in the lead roles, playing Galinda Upland and Elphaba Thropp respectively. The story acts as a prequel to The Wizard of Oz.
Director Jon M. Chu mentioned that the actresses got along really well on set. He said that he chose to not depend on excessive CGI and wanted actual sets. Chu also said that the two were extremely committed to their roles, with the actresses going as far as delivering live vocals while filming instead of the usual practice of lip-syncing to pre-recorded songs.

Through 96 years of auspicious Oscar ceremonies, the event has often witnessed one major contender becoming the punching bag for critical backlash on social media. In 2017, that dubious honor fell to La La Land, after the shocking moment where presenters Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty mixed up the musical with Moonlight, and announced it as Best Picture winner.

Eventually, La La Land not only lost the Oscar for Best Picture but also witnessed a segment of moviegoers shifting from swooning over the film to loathing it. But one person who was unfazed by the Oscars’ mix-up and public comments, was legendary filmmaker Christopher Nolan. Making an exception of watching Damien Chazelle’s Best Picture nominee, three or four times in cinemas, Nolan expressed his love for the film.

The new year is here. Valentine’s Day is coming up, and Netflix has unveiled new details about their upcoming romantic comedy, Players, which also includes some first-look pictures. The cast of the new comedy features an ensemble that includes Gina Rodriguez, Damon Wayans Jr., Joel Courtney, Augustus Prew, Liza Koshy, Ego Nwodim, Marin Hinkle and Tom Ellis. The movie follows in the tradition of films like Wedding Crashers, where a group of friends have perfected the process of meeting strangers for one-night stands and the complications that can arise from that.
The official synopsis from Netflix reads,
“New York sportswriter Mack (Gina Rodriguez) has spent years devising successful hook-up “plays” with best friend Adam (Damon Wayans Jr.) and their crew. While it has led to countless one-night stands over the years, following their playbook comes with a strict set of ground rules — chief among them: you can’t build a relationship from a play.

Ben Platt has apparently decided he’s no longer going to speak about his mega-producer father Marc Platt — and the internet is so not here for it.
During the press tour for his new film “Theater Camp,” which Platt cowrote with Molly Gordon (who herself is born to director Bryan Gordon and writer-director Jessie Nelson), a reporter for Rolling Stone asked him about being featured on New York Magazine’s infamous nepo baby cover from December.
“You were on the cover of New York Magazine’s Nepo Baby Issue. I’m curious what was your response to that? And what do you make of that whole discourse?” journalist Ej Dickson asked.
“We’re going to skip right over that if we can,” Platt responded.
“No comment?” Dickson responds.
The feature then indicated that Platt’s publicist intervened, saying, “If we could just focus on ‘Theater Camp,’ that would be great.

Ben Platt is done talking about nepo babies.
The “Theater Camp” actor shut down the question over his nepotism star status as the son of Hollywood and Broadway mega-producer Marc Platt during a Rolling Stone interview.
When asked about Platt’s inclusion in the infamous 2022 New York Magazine “Nepo Baby” cover issue, Platt replied, “We’re going to skip right over that if we can.” His publicist later intervened (as included in the Rolling Stone piece), “If we could just focus on ‘Theater Camp,’ that would be great. Thank you.”
The Rolling Stone reporter alleged that the interview was cut short not long after, with the publicist prompting for only one more question at the halfway mark of “what was supposed to be a 45-minute interview.”
IndieWire has reached out to Platt’s representatives for comment.

In many ways, Ben Platt is one of the most successful theater kids of our time, third only to Lin-Manuel Miranda and Taylor Swift (proof of this ignominious past can be found here and here). The prodigiously talented tenor grew up with fellow L.A.-based theater kid Molly Gordon and Bff Beanie Feldstein, attending a performing arts school and appearing in the ultimate theater kid role as Winthrop in a Hollywood Bowl production of The Music Man starring Kristin Chenoweth.

“Wicked,” the movie based on the hit Broadway musical, which is set to star Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, will be split into two parts. The first will be released Christmas 2024 and the second in 2025.
The film’s director Jon M. Chu announced the news on Twitter on Tuesday, saying it would be “impossible to wrestle” the story of “Wicked” into a single movie.
“As we tried to cut songs or trim characters, those decisions began to feel like fatal compromises to the source material that has entertained us all for so many years,” Chu wrote. “With more space, we can tell the story of ‘Wicked’ as it was meant to be told while bringing even more depth and surprise to the journeys of these beloved characters.”
Erivo is playing Elphaba in the film, while Grande will play Glinda in the story of what happened before Dorothy dropped in on the land of Oz.

“Wicked” will mark Chu’s follow-up to his “In the Heights” musical adaptation, which opened to rave reviews in theaters and on HBO Max last summer. Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo are set to star in the lead roles of Glinda and Elphaba, respectively.
